To celebrate Community Planning Month, Miramar is partnering with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
at Memorial Miramar as the title sponsor to host the “LEGO Build the Change” event. The event will
feature a design competition entitled “Changing Face of America – Miramar 2040: Build Your Dream
Community.” Additional sponsors include South Florida Pediatrics, Miramar Park of Commerce, Waste
PRO, Miami Children’s Hospital, Chick-Fil-A, United Health Care, Sam’s Club, Publix, Costco, BJs, Wal-
Mart, Blue Bell Creameries, First Investors and the Miramar Cultural Arts Center. Snacks and beverages
will be provided for the children during the entire event. For the evening portion of the event (4:00 p.m.
to 7:00 p.m.), Chick-Fil-A will provide meals for all attendees.
This competition is designed to give the children an opportunity to build the change they want to see for
Miramar. It can be houses in their neighborhood, shopping centers, office buildings, hospitals/medical
centers, parks, schools or just a fantasy creation. Approximately one ton of mixed LEGO ® bricks and
pieces will be available for the children to shape their thoughts, feelings and ideas on how Miramar can
become a more sustainable city for the future.
Please arrange for your school bus to arrive at Vizcaya Park no later than 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
Each class should be accompanied by the appropriate number of teachers/chaperones. Although, the
children will be having lunch at school, prior to or after attending the event, snacks and beverages will
be provided.
For their participation, each student will receive a LEGO® T-shirt and a LEGO® diploma after building
their project. From 4:00 - 7:00 pm, that same afternoon (Oct. 10 th ) at Vizcaya Park, parents are invited to
view their child’s creation and have dinner compliments of Chick-Fil-A. The three best projects will be
recognized at the City Commission Meeting on Wednesday October 17, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Project Description
Imagine that you are given the opportunity to build your Dream Community. As a Mayor; a City Planner;
an Architect; an Engineer; a Developer; a Business Owner and/or a concerned resident, what will your
Dream Community look like?
� Where will you live, work, learn and play?
� Will there be single-family or multi-family residences?
� Where are the schools, hospitals, fire stations, police stations, City Hall, places of worship and
parks located?
� How will you access food? Where are the farms, community gardens, grocery stores, restaurants?
� How will you travel? Will you walk, bike, use public transit or boat?
� What opportunities are there for you to meet your neighbors?
� Is your community inclusive?
� Is your community suitable for people of all ages?
� Is your community handicap accessible?
� Is your community sustainable and livable?
Share with us your vision for your Dream Community and join us in our quest to build it using Lego
bricks.
Eligibility
This competition is open to fifth grade students from all City of Miramar Elementary Schools. Each
school will develop their own selection criteria for participating students. Each school will be allowed to
bring 1 group of up to 25 students. Each school participating in the CHAMPs program is allowed to bring
an additional group of 25 students.
Requirements and Participation
In order to participate, each team is required to submit a completed City of Miramar Release, Waiver
and Indemnification Agreement for each team member. These forms should be sent to

Selection Criteria
� A panel will be appointed by the Community Development Department to judge the submissions of
the Dream
Communities.
� The panel’s decision will be final and no correspondences or inquiries relating to the decision of the
panel will be entertained.
