Security Council and statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,<br />

materials from Korea, whether in Korean or in English, are all from<br />

South Korea. However, since the main sources on armistice violations<br />

from the South Korean Ministry of Defence published in 1989, 1993,<br />

1997, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2006 record both parties’ views, such a<br />

situation is not regarded as a weakness.<br />

In addition, other books in Korean and articles in Korean journals<br />

that include both parties’ opinions have been used, but this study<br />

could not have been completed without extensive use of materials in<br />

Swedish issued by the Swedish NNSC delegation from 1953-2008.<br />

Despite attempts to acquire materials from the Czech and Polish<br />

embassies in Stockholm and searches through the Internet, the author<br />

has failed to find information published by the two countries. However,<br />

since materials published by the Swedish and Swiss NNSC delegations<br />

contain data on all member countries and assessments refer to the<br />

whole Commission, such a situation is not regarded as a problem.<br />

Data on armistice violations are supplemented mainly by publications<br />

by South Koreans who have served in the MAC, reports by the<br />

Swedish NNSC delegation and publications by the Swiss NNSC<br />

delegation, most of which are in German. In this way, a representative<br />

sample of views on armistice violations as well as the development of<br />

inter-Korean relations that affect the Commissions’ work are presented.<br />

The reports by the Swedish delegation, a Swedish study from<br />

1985 and studies from 1993, 1997 and 2003 in which Swiss officers<br />

who have served in Korea have published both the history of the<br />

NNSC and their own experiences are indispensable sources on the<br />

Commission’s work. A few officers from both countries have written<br />
