January 20 At the 260th MAC meeting, the North claimed that due to the<br />

“American imperialists” there was no re-unification. The South<br />

responds that the UN troops guarantee peace.<br />

North Korea warns the UNC not to commit provocative acts.<br />

January 21 North Korean assassination attempt on President Park Chung<br />

Hee fails.<br />

January 23 The American intelligence ship “USS Pueblo” is seized by<br />

North Korea off Wônsan.<br />

January 24 At the 261st MAC meeting, the UNC expresses concern<br />

regarding the assassination attempt on President Park Chung<br />

Hee and charges North Korea with having illegally seized the<br />

Pueblo. The North denies the assassination charges and<br />

accuses the US of an aggressive act by infiltrating an armed spy<br />

ship.<br />

In the US, four meetings on how to handle the crisis are held.<br />

January 26 The NNSC holds a meeting on the Pueblo. The NNSC serves as<br />

a liaison organ during the crisis.<br />

President Park Chung Hee orders the First Army into full<br />

combat status.<br />

January 27 The NNSC declares that North Korea is willing to negotiate<br />

over the Pueblo if the Americans stop shaking their fists.<br />

January 29 Swedish and Swiss NNSC members tell the UNC/MAC Senior<br />

Member that the time was ripe for negotiations. The South<br />

declares it is willing to negotiate.<br />

January 31 North Korea announces that the Pueblo issue could be resolved
