Dg’s Message
DG Tom Little and Lions Lady Marjorie.
Our District Convention is well and truly over. I believe it
was an excellent convention with good business, good
speakers and lots of fun and fellowship.
The Finley Lions are to be congratulated on their
dedication and the hard work they did as a club to ensure
that the convention was a great success. Our keynote
speakers were great. Father Chris Riley, an inspirational
speaker a wonderful person and a tireless worker with the
young people in the communities of our cities and
regional areas of our troubled country.
John Olson a man with a big heart and more importantly
big feet and strong legs, for him to be able to achieve his
dreams in trekking across our country with Lions and
charity in mind should be an inspiration for all Lions to
follow your dreams and achieve the impossible.
PDG Bob Radford a good speaker with unbelievable
dedication to lions in his role of membership co-ordinator.
PDG Carlene King OAM who’s inspirational speech
regarding the role of women not only in our communities
but also in our Lions Clubs was exceptional and created
great interest and discussion, and as Governor I thought
that it was just wonderful.
The Remembrance Ceremony was well conducted with
dignity and respect. The Saturday night function was
great; Lions Lady Marjorie and I along with our guests
had a wonderful night and I am sure that all those that
attended did the same.
DG’s Message cont.
Our business sessions created some debate and I thank
those delegates who were involved in our notices of
motions, and I am extremely pleased that we are going
to take our Junior Public speaking program to the MD
Convention in Canberra for consideration by the delegates
at that convention; hopefully it will become part of the
MD programs.
Congratulations to DGE Lynn Fredericks, 1st VDGE Peter
Niall and 2nd VDE Stephen Kazenwadel. I am sure that
you will have a great time in the next twelve months.
Both Marjorie and myself have a had a wonderful time
enjoying the friendship and hospitality that has been
extended to us as we continue to visit our District clubs,
to see the work and the contributions that all our Lions
clubs do in their communities both large and small is
really good and very much appreciated by this Governor.
At the time of writing this report we have visited some 54
clubs plus our three Leos clubs, so as you would
understand I am looking forward to the Christmas break.
As the year comes to a close, I would like to encourage
all clubs to think about our International President’s
Reading Action Program and promote Lions in our
District by contacting your local schools with the view of
donating books or a commuter to the young people within
those schools, engaging in this easy to do community
project is very important to our International President
and myself as the Governor of our District.
At this stage our district membership stands at 1375
members, we have inducted 49 new members but
unfortunately we have dropped 56 members, those 56
members are lost not only to our Lions clubs but also to
our communities. Therefore would encourage all clubs to
hold a membership drive, and remember don’t keep Lions
a secret talk to anybody and everybody about our Lions
organisation.
As Christmas is near Marjorie and I would like to wish all
the members of our district a Merry Christmas and a safe
and happy new year.
Victorian Lions Foundation Inc.
At the September Special General Meeting of the Victorian
Lions Foundation, several important matters were cleared
up.
A complete two year audit of the books were presented
along with the Financial Statements. No inherent risks
were evident and the loss on investments was due to the
general worldwide investment downturn.
Monies held in trust for Lions Village Licola are now being
held in a rolling term deposit, giving Licola a regular
income and this decision is acceptable to both the Licola
Board and the V.L.F.
The VLF Statement of Rules and Purposes has been
updated and presented to the District conventions.
All investments are currently being re-assessed with a
view to some changes being made in order to maintain a
strong financial base for the future.
From January to October this year we are proud to have
distributed a total of $184,500 to four of our projects.
Benalla Lions Club September Meeting
Past District Governor Les Harrison attended the meeting.
The very interesting guest speaker was Jason Mullins
from North East Water. Jason discussed the important
function of the Benalla Water Treatment Plant, including
the locations of the catchment areas and the
maintenance of water storage.
Water from the treatment plant is then transferred
through a 12 kilometre pipeline to Benalla by a gravity fed
system.
This provides services to about 4,900 houses, schools, a
hospital, an ice works, an abattoir and other businesses.
The Plant supplies 1,100-1,600 megalitres to Benalla
annually. President Peter Poels presented Jason with a
Certificate of Appreciation.
The Lions Club was then very pleased to induct four new
members to the club. Les Harrison welcomed Trevor
East Loddon 30 th Anniversary & Annual Changeover
Last month saw the club celebrating 30 years of Lions in
the East Loddon Community - quite an achievement for
the club, and we still have three original charter
members. A great night was had reminiscing over 30
years of photos and memories. Many past members
joined us for a night of celebration, it was a great chance
for people to catch up.
During the night Lions Barry, Frank T and Ron were
awarded their 30 year Monarchs and Jim was awarded his
20 year Monarch, which caused some confusion since
he’s been in Lions for nearly 25 years. Zone Chairman
Norm Walkington presented these awards along with
years of service awards to all club members. Each
member was also given a book containing 30 years of
history of the club.
PDG Allan Millar installed the new office bearers - in
record breaking time. Frank Tappe gave him a time limit
of three minutes and Allan said he had time left at the
end. Congratulations to our new President, Lion Frank
Tappe, all the best for the coming Lions Year. Lion Ash
Potter and partner Erica Duffy presented our three
remaining charter members with an Honour Board to be
displayed in the Lions Den. This will display the names of
the Presidents, Treasurers and Secretaries for the last 30
years.
A first for the club this year we presented the Inaugural
Citizenship Award. This was presented to Noel Hercus for
his service in the Community. Noel said he knew
something was up when he saw his family and friends
there but had no idea it would be an award. Noel is a
keen supporter of the Mitiamo Football Club and is always
on hand to help out anyone in need. John Forbes spoke
very highly of Noel and everything he has done for him
personally. Congratulations Noel!
Lions Frank Tappe and Barry Schramm were also
presented with the Chris August award for their service to
Lions and their community over the last 30 years.
$46,037.00 for Childhood Cancer Research
The amazing amount of $46,037.00 is the total raised
by the Nathalia & District Lions Club “ Posties from Perth”
Challenge.
In a special presentation afternoon in Nathalia on the
11th November, the cheque was presented to Australian
Lions Childhood Cancer Research trustees John Thorpe
and Ross Wood. This amount is the funds single largest
donation received to date and will be used at the Royal
Children’s Hospital Melbourne to employ a tumor
researcher.
John Wood went on to explain to those attending that
The Childhood cancer Research fund has a motto: “Every
child deserves a chance at Healthy Life” and the funds
raised by the Nathalia and District Lions Club is a step
towards fulfilling that motto.
Trustee Ross Wood then went on to present some very
special awards to all riders and backup crew involved in
the challenge. Lions John and Sue Loader and Lion
Stuart Barnes received the prestigious “Neil Williams –
Black Opal Award” – The highest award given by the
foundation.
A more amusing award ceremony was then conducted by
Stuart Barnes when he presented some of the other
riders and back up crew with “special awards which
matched the “antics” that were carried out on the ride.
Nathalia & District Lions Club would like to thank
everyone who contributed to this project. The “Posties
from Perth” trip was an adventure that we will all
remember for a long time and it is wonderful to see all
the hard work that was undertaken to achieve the dream
of riding from Perth to Nathalia be rewarded by raising
such an outstanding result.
Unique Bannerette
Collection at Corowa
Very few Lions Clubs in Australia would possess a
bannerette display as unique as the 47 that are on show
at the Lions Club Rooms at Corowa.
They each belong to Past District Governors commencing
in 1959-60 with PDG Ray Ware MBE through until the
current 201V6 District was created in 1978-79.
From that year with PDG Derrick Langshaw through to
2011-12 with DG Tom Little there are all the personal
bannerettes of the 35 years that 201V6 has been in
existence.
It is intriguing to view the historic display and the Lions
Club of Corowa is to be commended on the continuing
project.
Well done Corowa!
members of the Lions Club of Corowa and the recently
the previous years those who were there had a great
night. Patrons supported the Lions and Leos with sales for
2012 Exchangees with Chairman Stephen Kazenwadel,
PDG Charlie Leaney and DG Tom Little.
Way back on October 14th the District held it’s annual
seminar for outgoing Youth Exchangees at Rochester.
The initial line up was seven youth, with six going to
Europe and one to Japan (five female, two male).
The venue was the Rochester Hospital, with the catering
and other arrangements in the hands of Rochester Lions.
Thank you to President Hedley and Rochester Lions for
the excellent day.
Many thanks to PDG Charlie Leaney for his
comprehensive presentation and to his two assistants,
Lion Jan, with her table of Australiana items and former
Exchangee, Jason Smeaton, who probably thought he
was only doing a ten minute presentation, but ended up
staying all day.
Since October one girl has withdrawn. Aside from that all
the other Exchangees flew out of Australia on Saturday
1st December and safely arrived at their destinations.
Leos Challenge
Sunday, 28th October, saw Tungamah and Corowa Leos
meet together for the first ten pin bowling challenge at
Wangaratta. With Lion Pat Thomas driving the Tungamah
bus, the two clubs met up at the bowl and the battle was
soon on in earnest. Despite some brilliant bowling early
by the Corowa Leos, the Tungamah mob soon got back
onto level terms and were able to draw away over the
concluding frames to take out the first challenge.
Following the great day at the bowl, the two clubs then
moved down the main street for pizza, and some
fellowship, which was well enjoyed by all. No doubt,
Corowa were the best at pizza eating, and with a vow to
take the perpetual trophy next year. Many thanks to the
adults who came along to lend their support and to
Corrinie who has been a driving force behind the new
Travelling Travel Gavel
DG Tom Little presenting the Travel Gavel to Lavington
President Dave McCormack.
The Travelling Travel Gavel Project has now been running
for over three years. It was devised by Kerang Lions Club
mainly because we seemed to “win” it most of the time as
we travelled the most kms with the greatest % of club
members. It sat gathering dust in our Lions Den till the
next convention so we thought it would be good if it
visited other clubs with an associated Gavel tax of $1 per
km that would go towards V6 Foundation. We thought it
would give clubs a good reason to visit their neighbouring
clubs as well.
In the first year the gavel went to 12 clubs, five in the
2nd and six in the 3rd and about $2000 has been raised
for V6F. The conventioneers have voted for the Project to
go on for another 3 years so our wish is for our clubs to
embrace the Project even more. Lavington Lions have
won it this time and have already passed it on to
Myrtleford Lions and we have received a cheque from
them already.
At the time of printing we haven’t heard from Myrtleford
yet but hope they have moved it on and have sent their
cheque to Kerang. Please keep the Gavel moving and
send your gavel tax cheque to Kerang asap so we can
keep track of where it is. Please send photos of your
visitations to Carol for publishing in the V6 Roar. PDG
Charles Leaney has promised to keep an eye on things for
me and we have challenged the east part of the V6
District to get more Gavel tax than the west part. It is up
to all clubs to embrace the Project better and have some
fun as well. I hope I can give glowing reports in the
coming months!
Yours in Lionism,
Wangratta Visit to South Vermont Lions Club
In early November, three Lions and one Lions Lady
travelled to Mitcham to attend a meeting of the South
Vermont Lions Club.
The Lions Club of South Vermont is a small club
within the City of Whitehorse with around 20 members.
The club was formed and chartered in 1985. Among the
Club’s activities are their annual Giant plant sale and
Vermont Secondary College Leo Club. The Club is also
involved with Licola and Youth of the Year and has
recently become involved with the Cerebral Palsy
Education Centre
During the meeting the Club inducted it’s very first female
(and youngest) member.
The induction was carried
out by Council Chairman,
Lion Lou Onley, a Past
President of the Lions Club
of Wangaratta.
One interesting feature of
the meeting was that the
Vermont South President Peter Carden and Wangaratta
secretary Lion Steve Kazenwadel.
Lions Stand at the Elmore Field Days
Lions District 201V6 again had a promotional information
stand at the recent Elmore Field Days. We were very
grateful to have nurses from the Rochester Hospital assist
with Blood Pressure testing throughout the days with
approximately 350 tests being carried out over the three
days. As with other years some above average readings
were recorded especially with the younger ones. Staff
from the Rochester Hospital are following up those with
higher readings with a report coming back to the Rochy
club when finalized.
A free $50-00 petrol raffle was held each day where those
that had their blood pressure taken received an entry into
the competition. The ticket gave them the opportunity to
say if they were interested in finding out more about
Lions. Over 30 ticked this box and have been followed up
through local Lions Clubs in their areas.
Tea and coffee was also available with a slice of Lions
Christmas Cake. The display was manned throughout the
Field Days by Lions from Moama, Echuca, Lockington,
Tongala, Stanhope and Rochester Clubs. Thanks to these
clubs for their assistance over the three days.
“A LITTLE LION WORKING FOR LIONS”
Club Pres Peter Carden, new Lion Georgina Kazenwadel
and Council Chairman Lou Onley.
meeting agenda, minutes, correspondence list and
treasurers report were projected on a screen at
appropriate times during the meeting.
A guest speaker from “Fonebank” spoke on the
fundraising possibilities of selling them superseded mobile
phones for recycling onto third world countries(in much
the same way as recycle for sight).
The Club donated $1000 to LCIF for the Hurricane Sandy
appeal.
It’s Now or Never; Les’ Ride
I guess there is one thing you should learn early in life,
and that is to say nothing unless you say something. I
was guilty a couple of years ago of making a big
statement about a long bike ride to raise some money for
Prostate Cancer Awareness and the Children’s Cancer
Research Foundation.
At my age of almost 63, the longer you put it off, the
harder it is, and this year, I decided to do the ride via the
Great Victoria Bike Ride. Only 591 kilometres, but another
thing I learnt was to check the route. Couldn’t have been
much hillier from Lakes Entrance to Phillip Island. With
great help from District Clubs, there was no turning back,
as I headed to Lakes Entrance with tent, bike and not
much else. I was among friends straight away, as the
Lions at Lakes Entrance were running the BBQ. (What
else?)
Lakes Entrance from Bruthen on the Saturday was only
45 km, and I left a bit later. Didn’t want to get there first
and help unload the luggage from the six semi trailers. No
danger of that, hills and more hills, but met up with Leos
along the way, especially PDG Don Blennerhassett and
Helen at Metung. The end of each day, was all the same,
get to camp, find your luggage and put up you tent. Then
tea and a drink, and then off to sleep. The days generally
ranged between 80 and 95 kilometres, with the second
last day being 114 kilometres. It was the hardest physical
and mental thing I have ever done.
There were 4000 riders on the trip, and I met some great
people. Ages ranged from five years old on the back of
her dad’s tandem, to 83 years of age. Surprising the
number of Lions on the ride. Monday was ridden in
searing heat over 84 kilometres from Briagolong to
Rosedale, and I felt no guilt about a couple of beers that
night!!! Tuesday was a shocker up the mountains, and
much of my morning was spent assisting riders with
hypothermia!!! Wasn’t a great day! There were several
riders taken to hospital!!!
Most days, I was on the road by 7 a.m. which is way too
early, but it does beat the heat. Thursday, we set off in
misty rain.
The Friday night, we had an enormous storm during the
night at Mirboo North and all my stuff got wet except one
set of lycra, which enabled me to tackle the 114
kilometres to San Remo. This was a beautiful ride, despite
much of it being into a strong wind.
The last day was only 40 km and it was freezing with
wind, rain, hail and an occasional burst of sunshine, but it
was great to cross the finish line.
I am confident that at the end of the financial reckoning,
there will be over $4000 to hand over for the two
foundations. Thanks to all those clubs and individuals for
supporting me. It wasn’t easy, but it will be worthwhile.
Thanks to Lions Charlie and Roberta for their wonderful
support. Two important things I learnt- when you have
something important to say, keep quiet about it, and if
you do say it, check the route. Don’t know I’d do it again,
but at least, I kept my promise to do something.
PDG Les Harrison
Tungamah Ten Thousand
The face of Lions was evident on 4th November as the
Tungamah Lions and Leos presented the 16th Tungamah
Ten Thousand, attracting many visitors into the town.
With the back drop of Lion Peter Chisnall’s Hotel, the
events covered a ten kilometre fun run, a five kilometre
fun/run, and short distances for juniors. The whole day
puts back into the town a lot of support and positive help.
Joshua Sait was the winner of the prestigious Crawford
Family sash for the men, while Stephanie Elliott took out
the honours and the sash for the women’s. After all the
running events were done and dusted, the cycling events
started with a flying lap of the criterion circuit, with PDG
Les Harrison taking to the course first. High quality fields
then took the centre stage, and for two thrilling hours,
three monumental races were then held. The A Grade
was a particularly high standard with local fireman, Simon
Crawford surging across the line in first position. Plenty of
other activities kept the young and old interested, with
day concluding with the “Black Stump Challenge”, in
memory of the late Lion, Ann Einsporn. This is a unique
event, with disabled cyclists, racing cyclists, footballers
and netballers making up the field. This year, Simon
Crawford took out the event from Les Harrison, while
Leos Tom and Carly Beattie were close to line honours.
The whole day is a great advertisement of Lions and
Leos, and we would also like to thank a couple of intrepid
Katamatite Lions who helped out as well, as well as the
Tungamah Bowls Club.
The Lions clubs of Strathmerton and Numurkah recently
combined to organise an information night on Depression
and Suicide. The night came about following a recent
motor bike ride from Melbourne to Alice Springs
organised by the Black- Dog Institute. A member from
the Strathmerton club Lion Archie Howden took part in
the ride, on his return Lion Archie suggested to the
Strathmerton Club that he would like to have an
information forum in the local area. Following some
discussion the Strathmerton Club decided to approach the
Lions club of Numurkah to see if they would be interested
in holding such an event.
The Numurkah club was very interested and so the
planning began. The guest speaker on the night was Rick
Raftis who is a member of the Black-Dog Institute. Rick
spoke on Depression, Bi-polar disease and Suicide. Rick
spoke openly about his own problems with depression
and his power- point presentation was very well received
by those in attendance. At the conclusion of Rick's
presentation the floor was opened for questions and or
comments regarding these topics, the opportunity to
speak was well utilised by the audience. Following
feedback from some of those who attended a follow-up
night is being planned for late in February 2013.
A head count during the night indicated approximately
eighty five people attended and the organising committee
agreed that if they had helped just one person then the
Lions 201V6 Roar Newsletter November December 2012
Marion Gillman
Marion was born in the Corowa
Hospital on 10th March 1938. Little
did Marion know at the time, but the
Corowa Hospital would play a
significant role in her life.
Albert (a farmer near Wangaratta)
and Jesse Parish were her parents
and Marion was one of seven
children.
Marion, otherwise affectionately
known as “Todd” trained as a nurse
in the Wangaratta Base Hospital and the St George
Hospital in Melbourne. She would often joke that she was
“double certificated” – meaning she had obtained the
nursing certificates of nursing and midwifery.
It was about this time that “Sister Parish’ met the
handsome bachelor electrician Lionel Gillman from just
outside of Rutherglen. To everyone’s delight they hit it off
and decided to get married on the 22nd February 1964.
Marion and Lionel settled down in Corowa. Lionel opened
2 electrical shops one in Corowa and one in Rutherglen
and had a thriving electrical contracting business. Marion
went to work at the Corowa Hospital and was the Matron
in Charge of the then 95 bed hospital for a period of time.
Marion eventually became the Nursing Unit Manager of
the new Carroll Wing of the Corowa Hospital. Marion had
a great group of loyal mates who worked with her in
Carroll Wing.
It is often said that “behind every great man is a great
woman” – and that great woman was Marion. Lionel’s
strong involvement in Lions would not have been possible
without the strong support and encouragement of Marion.
In fact Marion also served in “Lions Ladies” – also serving
her community as President of the Corowa Lions Ladies
Club on several occasions. Apart for a few years in the
early days of Lionel’s career in Lions most of that time he
had by his side as staunch and valuable ally, Lions Lady
and wife Marion.
Together Marion and Lionel represent the values that we
all aspire to as Lions and they have on so many
occasions, inspired us all.
Marion and Lionel have on their journey through Lions
made many life-long friends that even today will not pass
through Corowa without stopping by. Such is the
fondness that is held for them both in this great
organisation.
I’m sure that Lionel would be the first to admit that
without Marion much of his work in Lions would not have
17
been possible and this is the reason we recognise Marion
“Todd” Gillman’s contribution to Lions International and
the Lions Ladies Auxiliary, not to mention the many
countless hours of service to the community of Corowa.
Marion is survived by her loving husband Lionel Gillman
and her two boys Kent and Peter who were very close to
their mum - as most boys are and they will miss her
deeply. As will her grandchildren and her extended family.
Lionel is well known locally. He is a strong and resilient
man who will honour Marion’s memory well. Lionel has
made the comment; “ I am very privileged indeed to be
part of the Lions family.”
Marion was born in the Corowa Hospital
She worked in the Corowa Hospital
Her children were born in the Corowa Hospital
And finally she passed away in the Corowa Hospital
Let’s remember the happy times we spent with “Todd”….
Cord Blood, Childhood Cancer
Research and Spinal Cord
Fellowship Continued
Research. Eight men and two women undertook the 3500
km trip in just 10 days travelling on their vintage Honda
CT110 Postie Bikes. The group made pit stops at towns
along the way to raise funds and awareness for their
chosen cause A.L.C.C.R.F.
Sue Loader who is Secretary of the Nathalia Lions Club
and also a member of the group said they chose to
support Children’s Cancer research because the research
started with children.
A.L.C.C.R.F. Trustee John Thorpe made mention even
with the latest research we are still losing three children a
day and this is three too many.
The Group had hoped to raise in excess of $30,000.00 for
this project but when the final presentation was made to
Trustee John Thorpe it was over $46,000.00 and to say
they were gob smacked is an understatement. John said
that was the biggest single donation given to the trustees
and every cent would be spent on research whereas
some others it disappears into the big funds first and very
little gets to where it is supposed to.
Lyn and myself along with others from V6 district were
present at the luncheon and presentation day put on by
the Nathalia Lions Club. It was a most enjoyable day and
we congratulate the Riders, backup crew and the Club for
this magnificent effort. It really makes your heart swell
with pride when you see a small Club like Nathalia raise
such a magnificent sum of money
A.L.C.C.R.F. Lions Rose Fundraiser with Treloar's
Roses was a great success. As you are all aware this
year’s roses sold quickly, so please place any orders
outstanding or new orders NOW so you don’t miss out
next year.
Community Welfare Group – display stands at the
Finley Convention. I am sure this display was well worth a
visit with each Chairman receiving many questions.
Spinal Cord Blood Fellowship Project
The latest update on this project – all is going well. They
are seeking more money to fund more new projects so
any Club that has some spare funds to give away I am
sure this is a great opportunity to lend your support.
With Christmas on us I wish to take this opportunity to
wish everyone a very Merry Christmas along with a Happy
and Prosperous New Year.
Yours in Lionism,
