Due to more stringent requirements for<br />

wastewater discharge, the disposal cost<br />

of municipal and industrial wastewater<br />

is increasing. In addition, in some areas,<br />

the use of groundwater is being limited to<br />

prevent dehydration of the soil, which could<br />

have a destructive influence on nature’s<br />

flora and fauna. With these factors in<br />

mind, the need for a closed water cycle is<br />

increasing rapidly. For efficient wastewater<br />

treatment, Pentair X-<strong>Flow</strong> has developed<br />

the Airlift Membrane BioReactor (MBR).<br />

This energy-efficient treatment concept<br />

has <strong>Compact</strong> <strong>33V</strong> - 5.2 mm ultrafiltration<br />

(UF) membrane modules at its center with<br />

a robust and reliable enforced tubular<br />

membrane inside. The 3 m long 8” modules<br />

allow a bioreactor to run up to 15 g/l MLSS<br />

biomass with a limited space requirement<br />

while offering a clean and safe environment.<br />

These features make Pentair’s Airlift MBR<br />

technology an ideal small footprint solution<br />

for municipal and industrial applications.<br />

airliFT Mbr PrinciPle<br />

The Airlift MBR system consists of a<br />

loop with membranes positioned outside<br />

the bioreactor tank rather than having<br />

the membranes in the bioreactor or a<br />

separate part of the bioreactor as in<br />

submerged concepts. The membrane<br />

modules are arranged vertically and are<br />

aerated continuously at the bottom. The<br />

turbulence created by the air injection<br />

enables high flux rates at a very low Trans<br />

Membrane Pressure (TMP) and a low energy<br />

consumption of 0.3 kWh/m³.<br />

The continuous aeration is the main driving<br />

force for the circulation of the activated<br />

sludge, while the feed pump is only<br />

used to overcome the hydraulic losses.<br />

A combination of forward flushing and<br />

periodic backflushing and/or relaxation<br />

intervals is used to control the cake layer<br />

formation inside the membrane tubes<br />

and to extend the intervals between<br />

maintenance cleanings. The continuous<br />

aeration also takes care of the fouling<br />

control inside the individual membrane<br />

tubes.<br />

The Pentair Airlift MBR is a compact-built<br />

purification system combining the biological<br />

degradation step with a membrane<br />

separation step. This combination offers<br />

several significant advantages over a<br />

conventional activated sludge system,<br />

including higher biomass concentration and<br />

less sludge carryover. The higher biomass<br />

concentration results in a more compact<br />

system design which is an advantage for<br />

both highly populated and remote areas.<br />

The decrease in sludge carry-over in the<br />

effluent reduces the need of post-treatment<br />

of the effluent protecting ecologically<br />

sensitive areas. Another advantage of<br />

the side stream set-up is that existing<br />

wastewater treatment plants can be easily<br />

expanded. By adding the membrane units<br />

to the existing plant, its capacity can be<br />

advanced significantly, without increasing<br />

footprint or civil works.<br />

Capacity: 14,000 m 3 /d<br />

The need for reusing wastewater, both<br />

industrial and municipal, requires topquality<br />

membranes which provide direct<br />

re-useable water. The membranes<br />

applied in these applications filter down to<br />

ultrafiltration level and can be compared<br />

to the ones utilized in direct potable water<br />

plants. Energy consumption is at the same<br />

level of submerged membranes or even<br />

less, due to the efficient use of process<br />

conditions for flux enhancement.<br />

Another advantage of the AirliftTM MBR<br />

technology is that the membrane modules<br />

are placed outside the bioreactor in a clean<br />

and dry system setup. The wastewater<br />

itself is inside the membranes rather<br />

than outside, thus reducing the problem<br />

of maintaining elements submerged<br />

in activated sludge. Accordingly, the<br />

membranes are easily accessible and<br />

cleaned without having to touch or smell<br />

the sludge.<br />
