How to set up your
GMC Online account
Introduction
GMC Online is a secure part of our website
that allows you to manage your registration
with us.
Over 100,000 doctors already use GMC
Online. We want every doctor to have an
account before revalidation begins at the end
of 2012.
This leaflet explains how you can set up your
account. If you need any help, please call us
on 0161 923 6277 (+44 161 923 6277 from
outside the UK).

What is GMC Online and why do I need
an account?
You can find GMC Online through the home page of our website –
www.gmc-uk.org.
With a GMC Online account, you can:
n pay your registration and annual retention fees
n update your contact and address details
n apply for registration with a licence to practise, entry to the Specialist
Register or the GP Register, or to take the Professional and Linguistic
Assessment Board (PLAB) test
n apply to relinquish or restore your licence to practise
n view and print a Certificate of Proof of Entry on the Register
n complete the annual national trainees’ survey.
Importantly, you can also use your GMC Online account to confirm the
organisation that will provide you with a regular appraisal and help you with
revalidation. This organisation is called your ‘designated body’.

Step 6 – Confirm some extra details
At this point, we may ask you to give us some more information about
yourself. If we don’t need to, you’ll be automatically taken to Step 7 (please
see next page).
n If you pay your annual retention fee by Direct Debit, we’ll ask you to
confirm your sort code and the last four digits of the bank account
number we collect your payment from. We only need this information
for security purposes, to make sure you are who you say you are.
n If we’ve sent you an activation code, we’ll ask you to enter it at this

FAQs
What happens if I forget my password?
If you’re an existing user, don’t worry – just click ‘Forgotten Password?’ on
the GMC Online ‘Login’ page.
You’ll be asked to enter your GMC reference number and the email address
that we have on your record. We’ll send you a new password to your email
account, and you’ll be able to use this to log in straight away.
Why have I received an activation code?
When you set up your GMC Online account, we’ll ask you to confirm some
information about yourself, such as your date of birth and email address.
If we don’t already hold this information about you, we’ll send you an
activation code. You’ll need to enter this code when you set up your account.
This will allow us to make sure you are who you say you are.
I have entered my details but the system won’t allow me to set up my
account. Why is this?
The information you enter about yourself must match our records. This is
because we need to know you are who you say you are. If the system won’t
allow you to set up your account, it may be because the information we hold
about you is different to the information you have entered. If this happens,
please call us on 0161 923 6277. We will ask you some questions to confirm
your identity and we will update our records so that you can set up your
account online.
