KIA ORA, WELCOME
TO CHRISTCHURCH & CANTERBURY
Christchurch and Canterbury has an Ocean to Alps backdrop —
spectacular Pacific coastline, snow-capped mountains to the west and the
hidden bays of an ancient volcanic peninsula to the south.
There are few places in the world where, within two hours of an
international airport, you can ski at a world-class alpine resort, golf, bungy
jump, go rafting, mountain biking, wind surfing, whale watching and soak
in natural thermal pools.
GATEWAY TO THE SOUTH ISLAND
The nine surrounding districts within the Canterbury region present
remarkable diversity of landscapes and activities. The choices are
endless, from iceberg cruising in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park to
swimming with the world’s rarest dolphins in Akaroa Harbour, and all
within just a few hours’ drive.

RECOVERY UPDATE
Christchurch City has begun to rebuild after an earthquake in February
2011. While some parts of the city remain cordoned off, most visitor
services are open. If you have visited Christchurch before, your experience
will be different but you will realize that our city still has a lot to offer,
despite the damage caused by the earthquake.
Many visitor services - including bus services, the International Airport,
accommodation, visitor attractions and visitor information services are
open. Christchurch remains the gateway to the amazing experiences that
are on offer in the Canterbury region and the wider South Island.

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 IN
CHRISTCHURCH:
Rugby is at home right here in
Christchurch and we’re gearing up
to host an Official Rugby World
Cup 2011 Fanzone and REAL
New Zealand Festival programme
in Hagley Park, in the heart of
Christchurch. Christchurch and
Canterbury was to host seven
matches in RWC 2011, including
two quarter-finals. Due to damage to
at the stadium from the earthquake
of 22 February, the City is no longer
able to host the matches, but we
will still be centre stage through the
tournament with a Fanzone and
Festival programme befitting of
New Zealand’s most Rugby mad
region. Quite simply, we love
our rugby in Christchurch and
Canterbury and the interest in
the tournament for the people
of Christchurch and Canterbury
remains high. Over the period of
the Tournament a Rugby World
Cup 2011 festival will take place in
Christchurch’s Hagley Park. It will be
a place for people to come together
to enjoy the entertainment and
hospitality, be part of the stories of
rugby and the Canterbury region and
even watch the matches on the big
screens in the Fanzone.
14 WWW.CHRISTCHURCHNZ.COM
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Whether you are a die-hard rugby fan or looking for something a little
different, Christchurch is putting on a great show during RWC 2011.
Aside from the screening of all matches in the tournament on the Fan
Zone big screens, there will be a host of festival and entertainment events
in the City to make your visit to Christchurch truly memorable. There
will also be lots of activities within the City at Christchurch Art Gallery,
Canterbury Museum, the Botanic Gardens and other city attractions —
make no mistake, Christchurch would love to see you!

Rugby World Cup 2011
Fanzone and Festival Area
GAME-ON IN THE FAN ZONE
Thousands of residents and visitors will converge on North Hagley Park, in
the heart of Christchurch, during RWC 2011. It will be the centre of the
off-field action during the Tournament, featuring a mini rugby ground, big
screens for viewing the games, stands for the fans and the ‘Ruck’ dome
venue.
There will be something for everyone in the Fanzone, from die-hard
Rugby fans to those who just want to sample the festive atmosphere the
huge event will bring to our city. Music, entertainment, dancing, Rippa
Rugby and a Rugby nostalgia exhibition are just some of the activities. The
team behind Christchurch’s theatre group, The Outwits, are also planning
a special theatre piece called “The Complete History of World Rugby
Abridged”, which will keep Fanzone crowds entertained.
16 WWW.CHRISTCHURCHNZ.COM
THE RUCK
As well as offering information about the Tournament and an i-SITE
Visitor Centre, the Ruck dome venue will be used to tell the story of
Rugby in Canterbury — the historic home of New Zealand Rugby. From
the foundation of New Zealand’s first ever Rugby club, to the hugely
successful Crusaders Super Rugby franchise, Rugby is at home right here
in Christchurch.

NOSTALGIA ZONES
The nostalgia zones, in ‘the Ruck’
provide a unique look at how
New Zealanders have enjoyed
Rugby through the decades.
Students from Christchurch
Polytechnic Institute of
Technology’s (CPIT) Certificate in
Interior Décor course, working with
the Christchurch City Council, have
made seven installations which
show how New Zealanders have
enjoyed Rugby in their homes over
the past century. Each depicts a
different period in time, which will
draw huge interest from the visitors
and fans who will visit the Fanzone
during RWC 2011. As well as the
furniture, fittings, ornaments, style
and decor of each decade, an
international match will be playing
on the television of that decade,
with a newspaper from the decade
to read and interviews with players,
officials and family members of
players taking place in the nostalgia
lounges. This will be part of telling
the story of Rugby in Canterbury —
from the foundation of
New Zealand’s first ever Rugby
club, to the hugely successful
Crusaders Super Rugby franchise.

ADRENALIN FOREST Test your limits, Conquer your fear
Adrenalin Forest is a series of rope
bridges, Tarzan swings and flying
foxes from platforms constructed in
the tree canopy.
The platforms range from 3 to 20

There are 6 different courses on site,
with increasing levels of challenge
and height.
All participants receive a detailed
safety briefing before entering the
course, and are securely attached to
a safety wire at all times.
Adrenalin Forest is suitable for a
range of ages and fitness levels.
15-20 minutes drive from the town
centre (Spencer Park).

CANTERBURY
DISTRICTS
The province of Canterbury is a kaleidoscope of cloud piercing
alps, surging rivers, ice age glaciers, lush green hills, sculpted
coastlines, turquoise lakes and great sun-drenched plains. Just
over 300kms long and 100kms wide and bordered by the Pacific
Ocean to the east and the spectacular snow covered Southern
Alps to the west, Canterbury offers more scenic variety and myriad
attractions in close proximity to one another, and within easy reach
from an international airport, than anywhere else in the world.
