What is a LAZY EYE?
In humans, the visual system develops rapidly from
birth till the age of about 6 years. A clear central
retinal image is important during this period to
ensure proper development of the visual acuity.
If an eye is deprived of a central or a clear retinal
image during this critical period, the development
of the visual acuity will be arrested and amblyopia
or lazy eye will result. What is even more
interesting is that, in cases where the amblyopia
or lazy eye is left untreated, there will be a further
deterioration of the acuity already developed.
Hence it is important to treat amblyopia or the
factors which caused it at as early an age as
possible. Children should therefore be routinely
screened for visual problems, preferably at least
once before the age of 4 and again at age 7 by
optometrists who are professionally trained for the
task.
There are 3 main conditions that can cause
amblyopia and these conditions can occur
independently of each other or in combination:
1) Refractive error – the eye may be very longsighted
or short-sighted or has high astigmatism.
These refractive errors cause blurred vision
which impedes the normal development of the
visual system in children. Refractive amblyopia
will then occur.
2) Squint (Crossed Eye) – children with squints
may have one eye turning inwards, outwards,
downwards or upwards while the other eye is
looking straight ahead. This misalignment of
the eyes causes the brain to receive 2 different

separate images into one single image, it will
ignore the image seen by the crossed eye. The
eye that is not used will develop strabismic
amblyopia.
3) Cloudiness in the normally clear tissues of the
eye – eye diseases such as cataract or corneal
scars will prevent a clear image from being
focused on the retina. Stimulus deprivation
amblyopia will result if it happens in a child
whose visual acuity is still developing.
Treatment of amblyopia in children is by
establishment of a clear central image on the retina
at all times. The aim of treatment is to gain the
maximum visual acuity possible in the affected eye.
Any refractive error must first be fully corrected using
spectacles or contact lenses. An added advantage
of first prescribing corrective lenses is that, some
squints, which are caused by the presence of
refractive error might also be reduced in size by the
use of the spectacles or contact lenses. The child
should be coaxed to wear the prescription during
all waking hours.
Although a number of methods may be employed
by the optometrist in treating an amblyopia child,
the most popular is by patching of the eye which
has better vision, so that the child would use the
weaker eye.
The patching must be performed daily and the child
should undertake definitive visual tasks during the
period of occlusion for the therapy to be effective.
Children should be encouraged to read, trace,
up in the east of China, housing more than 100

Exhibition Centre
Taipingyang Underwater Exhibition Centre is
situated in the heart of Beijing and right below
where Beijing Central Television Tower is. With
RMB2 billion invested, the center is, too, both
educational and entertaining. Taipingyang
Underwater World Exhibition Centre is under the
supervision of the China Society of Ocean Ography
(CSO) and Beijing Science Education Base of CSO.
This Underwater world boasts of a large collection
of over 20,000 oceanic fishes and marine life living
together in harmony in its natural man-made ocean
surroundings.
Shanghai Blue Sea Broadway
Shanghai Blue Sea Braodway is situated inside
Shanghai, Hongkou District in Heping Park, with
an area of 8,500 square meters and built with an
investment of RMB30 millions. It is the only venue
in Shanghai where dolphins & seals perform
together. The Blue Sea Broadway building exterior
design is white with decorative sea corals to match.
The performing arena consists of 2,500 seats and
here is where the oceanic stars perform, giving
memorable presentations with audiences’

need to monitor the child closely for any
improvement in visual acuity and then make
adjustments to the refractive correction and
patching duration.
Surgery might sometimes be required to remove
any opacities of the ocular media such as
cataracts before vision training exercises
commences. Surgery might also be indicated for
a child whose squint does not respond positively
to correction of the refractive error.
Success in the treatment of amblyopia is
dependent on the severity of the visual loss, the
refractive error the amblyopic eye, the age of the
child when treatment is started, the duration of
any squint present and the cooperation extended
from the child and his parents.
Amblyopic children recover most quickly if
treatment is initiated before the age of 5. Recovery
is slower between the ages of 5 to 7, and after age
8, treatment becomes tedious.
If left untreated, amblyopia becomes a serious
vision handicap that will affect a child’s education
and mental development. The visual loss which
becomes permanent if it is not treated early
enough would directly limit a person’s vocational
and recreational choice in adulthood.
