One of the most frequently asked questions
about Mauritius is ‘What is the weather
going to be like during my holiday?’ While
we cannot answer that question with total
accuracy (unfortunately the weather is
beyond our control!), we can help you plan
your stay to coincide with the type of weather
you enjoy, based on past weather patterns.
Luckily, Mauritius is a year-round holiday
destination and, by staying on the holiday
friendly west coast, you will maximise your
chances of the best weather on the island.
Air Mauritius flies twice weekly from
Perth to Mauritius. Domestic connections
from major cities are available with Virgin
Australia (interline) and Qantas.
Schedules allow for stays of 3, 6 ,9 ,10
and 13 nights. Flying time from Perth is
approximately 8 hours. Connections to
Africa, Seychelles and other Indian Ocean
Islands, and to Europe are also available.
Take a look at the weather charts produced
by Mauritius Meteorological Services (on
the right and online) and you will see
exactly why “West is Best” - less rain and
days with rain, breezes that are balmy rather
than windy, and more sunshine!
Mauritius sits just above the Tropic of
Capricorn, which means it does not suffer
from extreme temperatures. Like all sub
tropical islands around the world, there is a
chance of a cyclone in the hotter and more
popular months from December to March.
IN MaurItIus:
West Is Best - It’s a fact!
The east and south
coasts tend to suffer
most from the annual
south-east trade winds,
especially from April to
October. The east coast
can be cooler during
these months due to the
strong winds and higher
rainfall, and because of
this, is less inviting for
water activities.
With the central plateau and mountain ranges offering
protection from the winds, the north and west coasts
provide year round, holiday friendly weather, calmer,
warmer lagoons and spectacular sunsets. And they
are closer to major attractions and cities.
Mauritius has a diverse culture developed
and influenced over centuries by foreign
settlement. Although discovered by the
Arabs and Portuguese, it was the Dutch
who first settled in 1598, naming the island
after Prince Maurice of Nassau.
The introduction of sugar cane and deer
was offset by the demise of the ebony
forests and the extinction of the famous
dodo bird. The Dutch departed in 1710 and
the French settled soon after, renaming the
island Ile de France.
The British arrived in 1810 and named the
island Mauritius. The abolition of slavery
in 1835 led to the indenturing of Indian
and Chinese labourers, whose religions,
cultures and rights were respected.
In 1952 Beachcomber started tourism in
Mauritius with the building of Le Chaland
(later rebuilt as the Shandrani Resort & Spa).
In 1968 Mauritius gained independence
and in 1992 was proclaimed a republic.
Beachcomber established promotional
offices around the world, with the Australian
office opening in 1995 and is now the
premier luxury operator to Mauritius.
Beachcomber Hotels is consistently
acknowledged as the most successful
hotel group in Mauritius and each year
reinvests millions to renovate, rebuild and
modernise resorts, ensuring the finest
Mauritian holidays for our guests.
Reinvestments over the past few years include
soft furnishing upgrades at all hotels, additional
restaurants built at Dinarobin, Shandrani
and Le Canonnier and major upgrades and
renovations at Royal Palm and Dinarobin.
Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa has been
completely rebuilt to be an amazing 5 star
resort featuring six superb restaurants, a Spa
by Clarins and luxurious Beachfront Suites,
each with their own private pool.
2012 sees a major refurbishment of the
Deluxe Rooms at the fully inclusive
Shandrani Resort & Spa.
Outside of Mauritius, renovations at Sainte
Anne Resort & Spa in the Seychelles have
been completed and building works continue
on the Royal Palm Marrakech, Morocco.
We eagerly await the 2013 opening of this
addition to the Beachcomber Hotel portfolio.
It is a fact that in Mauritius
the west coast has:
• the best holiday friendly weather
• more attractions
• more sightseeing opportunities
• more shopping areas
• and of course, spectacular sunsets.
Beachcomber hotels was the
first group in Mauritius to move to
sustainable tourism and development,
saving energy, reducing greenhouse
gas emissions, helping the environment
and aiding local communities.
BeachcomBer’s commitment to the
environment includes:
• Investing in waste water treatment plants
• Desalination plants supply all water to Trou aux
Biches, Paradis, Dinarobin and Sainte Anne resorts
• Six Beachcomber Hotels have speed variators
which regulate the distribution of water, reducing
the energy required to run air-conditioning
• Beachcomber Hotels’ is investing in solar energy,
phasing out traditional boilers
• Cogeneration and Trigeneration plants at Shandrani,
Trou aux Biches, Paradis and Dinarobin mean fuel is
used efficiently and is 100% green when used with
solar energy
• In the last 10 years the hotels have donated
over Rs200 million (approx AU$10 million) to the
Mauritius Foundation of Hope and Development
which supports micro-enterprises, literacy, and the
fight against social problems like drugs, alcohol
abuse, AIDS and domestic violence.
Walk With the Lions/casela
The signature activity at Casela is the amazing
Walk With The Lions. On the Walk there are
plenty of photo opportunities as guests get to
interact with lions, including the famous ‘white
lion’. Guests can walk with lions or white lions or
do an interaction with lions and cheetahs. Casela
is also home to more than 140 species of exotic,
rare and endangered birds, and a mini-zoo with
tigers, cheetahs, tortoises, monkeys, lemurs and a
lake with flamingos. For the adventurous there are
exciting activities including zip-lines, buggies, quad
bikes and the latest two wheeled toy, the Segway.
catamaran cruises
Extremely popular in Mauritius are the fun-filled
catamaran cruises, which operate daily. A day
trip outside the reef will take you to the stunning
Ilot Gabriel and the outer islets in the north.
On the cruise along the west coast it is possible
you will come across one of the friendly and
entertaining pods of Spinner or Bottlenose
dolphins. The cruise from Shandrani sails inside
the reef to Ile aux Cerfs, a beautiful lagoon with
plenty of water activities. Cruises include a BBQ
lunch and drinks and most allow time for some
snorkelling in the pristine waters.
A complete holiday destination offers more than just a beach. You may want to discover culture and history,
meet the local people, haggle for a bargain in markets, enjoy sightseeing tours or just hire a car and do your own thing!
In Mauritius the attractions are many and varied, and the choice is all yours.
Pamplemousses Gardens
The exotic Pamplemousses Garden was constructed
in 1770 and is one of the world’s oldest botanical
gardens. It is home to many indigenous and unusual
species of plants including the giant Victoria Regia
waterlilies and the Talipot palm which flowers after
60 years, then dies. After the gardens, take a tour to
nearby L’Aventure du Sucre, a former sugar mill, now
an interactive exhibition that showcases the history
of Mauritius and the importance of sugar in the
development of the island.
Grand Baie
The island’s tourism hub, Grand Baie is home to a
variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, supermarkets
and boutiques. Well known international fashion
labels can be found at attractive prices, and the local
markets welcome a good haggler! Allow time to
hire a motor scooter, take a catamaran cruise to Ilot
Gabriel, do an Undersea Walk or ride a sub-scooter,
go big game fishing or para-sailing. Tempt your taste
buds with the colourful roadside vendors’ delectable
Mauritian snacks like dholl puri, roti, samosas, chilli
bites and fresh fruits.
Port Louis
A visit to the capital city of Port Louis is a must.
Barter in the lively markets, explore museums,
mosques and temples, or stroll along Le Caudan
Waterfront, with its boutiques, cinemas, casino and
local craft market. The palm-lined Place d’Armes
offers great photo opportunities and for views of
the city and harbour, drive to the viewpoint at Fort
Adelaide. Champ de Mars, the world’s second oldest
horse racing track, is located in Port Louis and runs
meetings from April to December. With prior notice,
Beachcomber can organise individual and group
attendance at the races in a VIP box.
“Make sure you get to experience this rare opportunity to walk with lions by
reserving your place on the walk when you book your Beachcomber holiday”
chamarel Region
Central to Chamarel is the stunning Rhumerie du
Chamarel, a working distillery that produces the
finest of Mauritian ‘rhums’. Discover the art of rum
making from its beginnings as sugar cane, right
through to bottling. And the best part? Sampling
the award winning produce! Chamarel is also
home to a geological phenomenon known as the
‘Coloured Earths’, the result of centuries of erosion
of compacted volcanic ash. In addition Chamarel
has the island’s most spectacular waterfall and is
renowned for its coffee bean production.

The original and best Mauritius holiday experience - pioneers of tourism since 1952!
In Mauritius, choosing the right resort plays a major role in your overall holiday enjoyment. The quality of hotels, what is
included, the size of the rooms and the service all vary greatly. Here are some things to consider when choosing your resort.
Location, Location, Location!
As pioneers of Mauritian tourism, Beachcomber had first choice of resort locations. They selected the most idyllic sites,
on the best beaches which are mainly along the island’s protected west coast.
At some Mauritian hotels you must cross a road to get the beach, or beaches are overcrowded as they are too small for
the size of the resort.
Accommodation - It’s only a room... until you have to stay in it!
Accommodation is more than just a room and is a vitally important part of a beach holiday. We want you to enjoy time in the
room as much as on the beach. Beachcomber places great emphasis on accommodation with modern facilities and high
levels of comfort.
Some hotels provide basic rooms with limited facilities. As yet there are no official star ratings in Mauritius so many
hotels are very generous with how they rate themselves. Be sure to stay at a quality, reputable resort.
dining and cuisine - do I Get A choice?
Dining is an integral part of any holiday, especially in Mauritius, where most resorts include breakfast and dinner as part of the
package. Because you don’t want to be stuck eating the same food every day, Beachcomber’s guests are given numerous
dining styles from which to choose. These include themed and international buffets, set menus, and à la carte cuisine. All
buffets feature live cooking stations where chefs cook and serve the freshest ingredients in an array of dishes. All speciality
restaurants offer guests numerous à la carte choices at no extra charge and most also offer a Menu of the Day with a choice
of entrees, mains and desserts, also at no extra cost. This ensures the value of having meals included. Beachcomber Hotels
operates more than thirty exceptional restaurants, earning them the island’s highest culinary reputation.
Some Mauritian hotels have only one restaurant serving the same buffet each night. Others may offer a choice of
restaurants, but then charge you full price to dine à la carte, even though you have paid for dinner each night.
Sports & entertainment - can I have fun or will it be too expensive?
Having fun can be costly. Check what sports and facilities are included in the price at your resort. All Beachcomber resorts
offer the same standards of free water and land sports. We even include FREE water-skiing and nightly entertainment.
Some Mauritian hotels have very limited sports and entertainment included and charge additional for activities,
adding to the cost of your holiday. Others offer sports that are off-site rather than based at the hotel.
can I Include drinks? Yes You can!
For our guests wanting all meals, snacks and drinks included, Beachcomber offers upgrades to optional All Inclusive
packages at Le Mauricia, Le Canonnier and Le Victoria. The Shandrani Resort & Spa differs in that it is the only 5 star fully
inclusive resort in Mauritius. Included for all guests is à la carte dining, French Champagne, a wide range of imported wines
and spirits, cocktails and so much more. At Paradis and Trou aux Biches resorts, guests can upgrade to Full Board Plus to
include a 2 course lunch and a beverage with lunch and dinner. Dinarobin guests occupying Club Suites have VIP access to
the exclusive “The Club” with its selected drinks, cocktails, canapés, sandwiches and pastries.
Some hotels may offer “all inclusive” but only provide the basics of the cheapest house wines and beers, and an
extremely limited menu.
truly Mauritian - an authentic cultural experience!
All Beachcomber resorts are Mauritian owned and run, ensuring an authentic Mauritian holiday. Staff, many of whom have
been with the company for years, are continually trained to the highest standards and strive for promotions at “their” hotel.
Some Mauritian hotels are foreign owned, with some set up as ‘Clubs’ to cater for the needs of their own nationalities.
Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa HHHHH+
A luxury resort featuring pool suites and pool villas on the best beach on the north west coast
Pure luxury! The spectacular Trou aux
Biches Resort & Spa boasts beachfront
suites with pools, garden suites in
crescents surrounding six pools,
amazing two and three bedroom pool
villas and 6 sumptuous restaurants,
set in a tropical garden paradise and
fronted by a pure white sandy beach.
Just over an hour from the airport, 10
minutes from Grand Baie, and 20 minutes
from Port Louis, Trou aux Biches has been
a favourite on the international travel scene
for decades.
Architects have built Trou aux Biches
skilfully, retaining the Village charm and
atmosphere of the original resort, using
the established award winning gardens and
pools as the centrepiece.
34
Seven large pools are scattered throughout
the magnificent gardens and much of the
accommodation is centred around these.
The most sought after suites are those that
have a private pool and are dotted along the
beachfront, just a few metres from the water.
The six restaurants at Trou aux Biches are
located on the beach front or adjacent to the
beach front pools. At three of the restaurants
chefs serve the best of international cuisine.
The specialty restaurants present delicacies
from India, Thailand and Italy.
Trou aux Biches’ spa echoes the resort’s
authentic charm. It’s individual thatched
pavilions, tucked away amidst palm trees
and exotic plants, provide an instant sense of
elegance and tropical sophistication. A large
reflecting pool forms the centre of the spa.
As with all Beachcomber hotels, sport
abounds! There is a huge selection of water
sports, including free water-skiing, while
on shore the six floodlit tennis courts and a
state of the art gym are also available free.
children aged from 3 to 12 years, and
The ‘barefoot romance’ of Trou aux Biches has captivated the
imagination of brides and grooms from all over the world. The
While there may be two main wedding locations at Trou aux
Biches, guests are free to choose other intimate wedding
locations in the resort as the service is very much à la carte,
due to Beachcomber’s policy of guaranteeing only one
Trou aux Biches’ wedding co-ordinators are among the most
Reunion Island
Reunion Island
The exotic island of Reunion, a
French territory in the azure waters
of the Indian Ocean, is an island of
major contrasts. One of the world’s
unique, adventurous and most
intriguing islands, Reunion, located
near Mauritius, features an active
volcano on its south east coast,
beaches along the west coast,
amazing mountains with the highest
peak reaching 3,069 metres and a
fascinating culture.
Reunion offers an extremely diverse holiday
experience with something for everyone.
Relax on one of the many beaches, indulge
in the amazing cuisine and culture of the
French and Creole locals, hire a car and
explore the inland mountains or enjoy the
shopping and spectacular sightseeing.
For adventure and adrenaline junkies, the
activities are endless. Try hiking through
Reunion’s unique ‘cirques’, rock climbing in
the mountains or canyoning down one of the
island’s waterfalls. In Reunion you can, scuba
dive, surf the marine rich waters, fly a microlight,
paraglide, sky dive or take a trek to
the crater of the island’s active volcano. The
ultimate thrill and ‘must do’ is the helicopter
flight through the awesome ‘cirques’ - a
towering ring of extinct volcanoes.
the cirques
Being volcanic, the geography of Reunion is
unique. The island’s famous natural formations
are its three cirques - amphitheatre-like
valleys. Formed inside Piton des Neiges
(meaning ‘Snow Peak’), the volcano that gave
birth to Reunion, the cirques of Salazie, Cilaos,
and Mafate are all different.
Cilaos is a natural wonder and the drive is
memorable with hundreds of twists and turns
and numerous tunnels. Cilaos attractions
include local vineyards, lentil production,
embroidery work and the unique thermal
baths. Rock climbing and trekking are popular.
Mafate
Mafate is totally surrounded by mountains
and only accessible by foot or helicopter. The
unspoiled wilderness of this cirque is a favourite
destination for hikers. A number of mountain
‘gites’ (small cabins) are available for overnight
stays. For spectacular views of Cirque de
Mafate, go to the 2,200 metre high Maido Peak.
Salazie
Salazie is the largest and greenest cirque with
its long, deep canyon, lined with magnificent
waterfalls, steep cliffs and plunging valleys.
One of the most breathtaking waterfalls is Le
Voile de la Mariée (Bridal Falls). Nearby is the
beautiful village of Hell-Bourg.
Volcano - Piton de la Fournaise
Situated in the southeast corner of Reunion and
reaching 2,631m high, is Piton de la Fournaise
(Furnace Peak), one of the world’s most active
volcanoes. Tourists can walk to the top of the
mountain or take a shorter trek to the baby
crater, Leo Formica.
Amazing Africa
Africa is without doubt one of the
most awe-inspiring and exhilarating
destinations you will ever visit. This
vast continent is as famous for its
cities and landmarks as it is for its
animals and people.
In Africa you will experience the hustle and
bustle of life in amazing cities like Cape
Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Mombasa.
In contrast there is the quiet, unassuming
lifestyle of countless villages scattered along
beach fronts, dotted in deserts and nestled in
magnificent mountains.
And then there is the amazing spectacle
that is Africa’s wildlife. You will come face
to face with the “Big 5”, lion, leopard, rhino,
elephant and buffalo. You will see endless
herds of wildebeest and zebra in the famous
migrations. You will sit side by side and
wonder at the gentleness of the massive
silverback gorillas or the elegant flamingos.
And there will be time to stop and ponder
those animals, large and small, scarce and
common, and how they all fit into the grand
scheme that is Africa
Finally, you will meet the people of Africa.
Warm and inviting, with infectious smiles,
humble but proud. People who know what it
is like to both suffer and conquer. Africa will
warm your heart and have you yearning to
return. And it is most likely that you will.
We are proud to offer the best of Africa.
Beachcomber can take you from the sites
of Cape Town, to the majesty of Victoria
Falls, through the world’s biggest inland
delta in Botswana, up to the vast plains of
the Serengeti and Masai Mara, and into the
deepest jungles of Uganda and Rwanda.
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp
GoRILLA SAFARIS “A once in a lifetime, unforgettable experience”
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park,
a UNESCO World Heritage site, is
home to six habituated mountain
gorilla troops, four of which are
generally accessible on gorilla
treks. These four troops total +/-60
gorillas, and are made up of one
or more silverbacks, black backs,
females, juveniles and infants.
Each trek last between 3 and 8 hours,
depending on how long it takes to find the
gorillas, and once found, you will have a
maximum of an hour of interaction with
them. Your experienced guides will often
contain members of the teams initially
involved in the delicate process of getting
the gorillas used to humans. It is a once in
a lifetime, unforgettable experience to be so
close to these gentle giants, experiencing an
hour of their community lifestyle.
Bwindi is also home to 120 varieties of
mammal, 10 primates including the rare
L’Hoest’ and blue monkey, black and white
colobus monkeys, chimpanzee and baboon.
In addition there are over 300 bird species,
many of which are both rare and amazingly
coloured. Apart from the gorilla trek, there
are other forest walks that can be taken to
discover some of these amazing creatures.
As the gorilla trek involves mountain walking
a reasonable standard of fitness is required.
Treks are limited in numbers of participants,
all of whom must be 15 years or over.
the GReAt MIGRAtIon
Safaris in tanzania and Kenya
The migration of wildebeest, zebra
and other grazing herbivores, along
with their accompanying predators,
across the plains of Tanzania and
Kenya remains one of the world’s
awe-inspiring spectacles.
The Migration is rarely ever the same in terms
of precise timing or direction. It is influenced
by the signs delivered by Mother Nature: the
rains and the availability of fresh grass.
Generally, from January to March the
wildebeest give birth in the grasslands of
south-eastern Tanzania. As the grasses
dwindle, the herds move to the north-west.
Many of Africa’s impressive predators,
including lion, leopard, hyena and wild
dog, abound as they stalk the weak and the
young that straggle too far from the herds.
The herds are so vast that it takes from
around April until July to complete the
crossing of the Grumeti River. New
predators, in the form of crocodiles, are
another hazard to be faced.
At some time approaching August and
through September the animals move to the
Kenyan border, leaving the Serengeti and
entering the Masai Mara where the crossing
of the Mara River creates one of nature’s
amazing spectacles as the crocodiles feast
on the young, injured or weak animals.
Around October it is time to start the
return journey to the south-east with the
herds heading towards the Ngorongoro
Conservation Area where, in January, the
entire process begins again.
game-viewing in Africa. There are great
herds of buffalo, elephant and giraffe, along
