A Celebration of Learning
W
elcome to the 2006-2007 “Celebration of Learning.”
Although Augustana has over the years hosted a number of
events focused on student research and performances, this
conference started in its present form in 1997 with joint funding from
the Aid Association for Lutherans and the Augustana Arts and
Humanities Curriculum Fund. Now an Augustana tradition, for the last
five years the Celebration has been assisted by generous funding from the
Augustana Research Foundation.
The Celebration is the result of hundreds of hours of collaborative work
between students and faculty members. This year over 110 students are
scheduled to participate. The Celebration brings together students from
all over campus and allows them to share their ideas with a public
audience. Today’s papers, presentations, and performances represent
some of the best work that Augustana students can do. This
collaborative work is important in helping students develop into more
independent thinkers. Studies of student/faculty collaboration show that
such experience is one of the most powerful ways to promote learning
and confidence in learning. Students who have had such opportunities as
undergraduates are better prepared to meet the challenge of graduate and
professional schools, as well as enter into various professions.
The Celebration occurs because of the hard work of many individuals.
Thank you to all the people who have contributed their time and energy
to this endeavor. We think you’ll enjoy this year’s Celebration and the
many ideas and perspectives that will be shared during it.
