First Linernotes from the "Le Monde Musical de <strong>Baden</strong> <strong>Powell</strong>" (80.235 S) , 1964 

Brazilian music is, as its country which is 16 times as big as France, diverse, varied, surprising, 

subtle and simple all at the same time. This music only asks, as Brazil, for regognition and love. 

With this album, which is the first he releases in Europe, the guitarist & composer BP presents us 

a complete palette <strong>of</strong> his musical world. From African rythms to his personal perceiving <strong>of</strong> 

classical european composers, and through delicate reminiscence <strong>of</strong> melodies from the 

Antilles, to negro american jazz accents: BP reminds all these influences on his guitar. 

He's 27 years old. Born in Rio. He played since 8 y.o. After having studied in Rio academy, 

where he improved his style and learned composition, he started like many other, in clubs 

with little rythmic entities. He eventually showed up in several Tv & radio broadcasts, and his 

compositions became very popular. He teamed with Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Roberto 

Menescal for work and tours in several big cities in Brazil. He recorded with Herbie Mann and 

Jimmy Pratt just before his departure to the US. After some concerts in the Village Vanguard, 

his friend and poet Vinicius de Moraes made him come to Paris in the late <strong>of</strong> 63. He gave 

recitals and tv shows: Living room, musicorama etc... Asked for his guitaristic influences he 

answers: Segovia, Van Eps, Django are people that are part <strong>of</strong> the musical world i love. With 

this record you'll be able to discover samples from this musical universe. 

Here are the themes: DEVE SER AMOR: was recorded using play back device. <strong>Baden</strong> first 

recorded the rythmic part with the bass & drums. Afterwards he recorded the melody. <strong>The</strong> 

same process was involved with BACHIANA. 

CHORO PARA METRONOME is quite a challenge. <strong>The</strong> choro which was originally an 

improvisation over folkoric patterns, turns here into a guitar piece. <strong>The</strong> metronome replaces 

the whole rythm section. Fitting perfectly with this souless rythm, BP shows here its astounding 

technique. 

<strong>The</strong> Albinoni ADAGIO and the Bach PRELUDE so seduced the guitarist, that he did want to 

give a respectful homage to these composers by playing these two pieces. 

BERIMBAU is the name <strong>of</strong> a musical instrument looking like an arc, which is used in the 

Capoeira. This is a dance which partly look like wrestle, and is done by Nordeste youth, 

especially in the Bahia area. It is undoubtly <strong>of</strong> African inspiration. 

SAMBA EM PRELUDIO is made <strong>of</strong> two distincts melodies. <strong>Baden</strong> plays the first which is in turn 

played by the orchestra. <strong>The</strong>n the guitar plays the second theme, and then the two parts are 

played together, and taken by cello and Francoise Waleh's voice. CHANSON D'HIVER is the 

first song that <strong>Baden</strong> wrote when he came to Paris in December 63. 

SAMBA TRISTE opens on a very dark climate and dramatic first part, then the repetitive rythm 

takes over and leads to the conclusive chords. BERCEUSE A JUSSARA is a delicate 

composition, dedicated to his little niece "Sobrinha" Jussara. EURIDICE is a Vinicius de Moraes 

composition, which illustrates the Orphee myth. BACHIANA is a piece written with, once 

again, Johann S. Bach in mind. GAROTA is a new composition from Tom Jobim and Vinicius. 

<strong>Baden</strong> takes it as a basis for a free improvisation, with a complete command on the

On Sep. 27, 1970 finally <strong>Baden</strong> <strong>Powell</strong> came to Japan. In the past, there were a 

couple <strong>of</strong> rumor which he would come to Japan, but never happened before, so his 

visiting Japan made many people be very interested in. He attended second New 

Port Jazz Festival In Japan, and he was much better than other veteran Jazz 

musicians like Monk, Carmen Mcrae. Many people could not hide their exciting 

feeling, because finally we could listen his live performance which was called 

Legend <strong>of</strong> Bossa Nova Guitar Poet. Specially, it seems the best from midnight to 

5:00am on Oct.3, Sat. his guitar sound was very fluent and fantasy like aid from 

heaven for me who was drinking very bad test <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee and had sleepy eyes at the 

dawn. 

<strong>Baden</strong> <strong>Powell</strong> was born on Aug.6 1937 at the small village in Rio de Janeiro states. His 

family moved to downtown in Rio de Janeiro, after he was born. His talent <strong>of</strong> music 

was bloomed from when he was young because his father was violinist. And also 

because he grown up in the center <strong>of</strong> music city. He started to play the guitar when 

he was 3-4 year old, and trained with the his father's music score <strong>of</strong> violin. And when 

he was 8 year old, he took pr<strong>of</strong>essional class <strong>of</strong> guitar. He passed tough course which 

has 4 hours lesson a day, so that he mastered playing guitar in very short time.

<strong>Baden</strong> <strong>Powell</strong> – Barclay (J) HIT 1836 – 1971 (recorded 1970) 

He played guitar in the small festival when he was 8 year old, and he started to play 

guitar in the club when he was 15 year old. And he was getting popular after he 

played with female star singer Dolores Duran. He played as sideman for Sylvia Telles 

in 1960, and the road for star was opened for him. Also play with Antonio Carlos 

Jobim, Joao Gilberto and others in club at Copacabana made him be more 

popular. And also meeting with Vinicius de Moraes who is the author <strong>of</strong> Manha De 

Carnaval, pianist, guitarist and song writer made him more grow and be more 

famous. It means that Vinicius loved his guitar and he wrote poem for his songs, and 

gave him many advice. Those above experience or relationship with above people 

made his status as No.1 Bossa Nova Guitarist all over the world.

<strong>Baden</strong> recorded those 2 songs when he was in Japan. 

Of course this is his first recording in Japan. I hope the Japanese audience love those 

songs, because this songs were selected and arranged for Japanese audience. 

Side A is Manha De Carnaval which was written by Vinicius De Moraes [sic!] as 

above. Back musicians are Toshiaki Yokota (Flute) who is much popular than Sadao 

Watanabe now, Terakawa (bass) and Chito Kawauchi (drums) 

On Side B, <strong>Baden</strong> play guitar with scat sometimes, and it's very beautiful and
