known as the door to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The best time to be
there is on Sunday to enjoy two marvelous sites: the colorful agricultural
fair, where people from all over the valley gather to do business, and the
Sunday mass, which is still done in Quechua according to the laws of
colonial tradition.
In Písac, the Incas raised one of the their main dwellings of the valley,
composed of a intihuatana, multiple walls that create a stronghold and
religious temple, all of which were delicately carved in stone.
Close to there is Calca, a small village dominated by the imposing presence
of the snow-capped peaks Pitusiray and Sawarasy, sacred mountains to
the Incas, which together with Salkantay formed an important part of the
Andean magic-religious thought. The most important market in the region
is found in Calca due to its strategic location, close to the tropical valleys of
Lares. Also of interest are the church, built on top of Incan foundations, the
Huchuy Qosqo archeological complexes, and the Machacancha hot springs.
If you keep following the Urubamba River on its right hand side, you will
arrive at Yucay, a tiny town of Incan origin, where the palace remains of Sayri
Túpac, one of the Incan rebels of Vilcabamba, as well as a splendid colonial
church will capture the eye.
The next city after leaving Yucay is Urubamba, situated in the center of
the valley and given the name “the pearl of the Vilcanota” because of the
impressive beauty of its countryside, spreading outward from the foot of
