to themselves and grow easily; they are dominant elements
in the construction of identity, consolidation of the stigma
and socialization processes exclusive for children and youth
in the lower income neighborhoods.
Artists like Byron Mejía had worked on the construction
of an identity around violence and stigmatization. In his
photographs, videos and objects, Mejía makes a reference
to the ludic dimension of violence, and, at the same time, he
dialogs with the idea of a body as a toy and docile machine. In
the same direction, Miguel Romero in the series of drawings
called Manchados razón de ser examines the relation between
piracy and stigma. It’s a series of drawings of ink on paper
and other framed in CD boxes resembling representations
of the streets like that of the so called informal economy.
If there’s something that defines these pieces is the ironic
game that brings closer gang members with the immorality
of the capital cultural industry that tries to prevail over piracy.
Manchados razón de ser draws a condensed drama which
seems naive due to its caricaturist side the artist uses for his
drawings.
