Window Into the Ocean<br />

Following an $8.3 million renovation and the addition of <strong>La</strong>tin America's largest<br />

shark tank, the Mazatlán Aquarium just off the Avenida <strong>del</strong> Mar provides stunlling<br />

views ofmarine life. The 422,675-gallon, semi-circular ocean tank and its underwater<br />

viewing tunnels puts sea lo,'ers up close with dozens of sharks, while other tanks<br />

hold more than 50 species of sea life, including lemon sharks, giant groupers, Oli,'e<br />

Ridley sea turtles, manta rays, sea lions, butterfiy fish and yellowtail.<br />

Above ground, the Mazatlán Aquarium boasts a "Forest City" featuring playgrounds,<br />

an outdoor theater, planetarium, botanical garden and a small lake for<br />

rowing.<br />

Bird and sea lions shows are also popular.<br />

Old Mazatlán and Nearby Towlls<br />

Visitors who want to <strong>del</strong>ve into the area's history,<br />

should head to Old Mazatlán's<br />

'H9 national historic sites, including the stately 135-year-old Ángela Peralta<br />

Theater and the thriving Pino Suárez open-air market, in operation since 1899.<br />

For a real sense of the community, travelers stroll the Malecón and the Plaza<br />

Machado, sampling ubiquitous shrimp dishes at sidewalk cafés, sauntering through<br />

art galleries and museums; watching stunning sunsets and closing out their day<br />

at a jazz café.<br />

In the quiet foothills ofthe<br />

nearby Sierra Madre stand picLuresque colonial to,,"ns<br />

such as Copala, Concordia, Cosalá and the historic mining camp of Rosario. In the<br />

mountain village of <strong>La</strong> Noria, explorers may visit the 135-year-old <strong>La</strong> Vinata de<br />

los Osuna, a blue agave distillery and plantation, and learn how tequila gets to the<br />

bottle. Museums, archeological site¡; and churches in these outlying communities<br />

date to the 1500s and afford visitors an alterna te to beachside activities.<br />
