February of 1989, on board Aerovías DAP’s DHC-6 Twin Otter,
took place our first ever flight to the White Continent, led by
company pilots Sergio Cortez and Luis Utman.
This flight was carried out due to a medical emergency;
however, from this point a new route was to be established. A
route which today means maintaining a true air bridge between
the city of Punta Arenas, and King George Island, Antarctica.
Today, by the hand of our fleet of BAe airplanes, specially
conditioned for these missions, Antarctic Airways carries out
the larger part of air operations to Antarctica in the world,
developing unprecedented tourist programs, as well as providing
logistic support for scientific missions from all over the world.
With a new image that makes a stand for the company’s roots
in Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, DAP aims at
being at the vanguard, while staying true to its history.
el punto de partida para volar a Antártica;
asimismo, volando en una de nuestras naves
cuadrirreactor BAe 146-200, especialmente
AIR BRIDGE – FROM CHILE’S SOUTHERNMOST POINT TO THE WHITE CONTINENT
Without a doubt, Chile has growingly become
a destination of great interest for travelers
from all around the globe. The particular
shape of its territory give it one of the richest
variety of climates and landscapes, allowing
visitors to stand at the driest desert in the
world, before natural lakes surrounded by
intense greens, on plains adorned with trees
bent due to the strong winds, and on the
endless Antarctic ice, all inside one country.
Chilean Antarctic Province, located at the
shores of the famous Beagle Canal, and on
the mysterious Navarino Island.
However, now counting more than 25 years,
on a 12th of February of 1989, the company
pioneered on a new front, by carrying out its
first Punta Arenas – Antarctica flight, making
the first step towards building a route of
increasing relevance.
The consolidation of logistic networks uniting
the different corners of this long and narrow
land have contributed to the integration of
this variety, making it possible for the traveler
to experiment an important part of Chile’s
different beauties in one trip.
In the southernmost latitudes, DAP has
maintained a legacy of connection. Daily,
and for over three decades, travelers fly
for the most diverse of reasons to and from
the main points of Magallanes. From Punta
Arenas, a Cessna 402/404 flies over the
Magellan Strait to connect the Regional
Capital with the city of Porvenir, capital of
the Tierra del Fuego Province, and a DHC-6
Twin Otter reaches Puerto Williams daily
and throughout the year, the capital of the
Punta Arenas is, geographically, one of the
closest cities to the White Continent. And
today it makes a stand for this with its capacity
to work as Air Bridge to the frozen lands:
each year, Antarctic missions from all over
the world use Punta Arenas as their starting
point when flying to Antarctica. In the same
way, hundreds of travelers have the chance
to experiment the silent and pure beauty of
King George Island, by taking off from the
“Strait’s Pearl” on one of our BAe 146-200
units, specially conditioned to operate on
rough landing strips.
The consolidation of the Punta Arenas
– Antarctica and Punta Arenas – Puerto
Williams routes has allowed new logistic
possibilities for different types of tour
expeditions. As such, on reunions held
by IAATO (International Association of
Antarctica Tour Operators) in 2013 the
decision was made to study Puerto Williams
as complementary port to the Argentinean city
of Ushuaia in receiving Antarctic expedition
cruises, as well as operating from this point
to the White Continent.
This has meant that, today, firms dedicated
to Antarctic cruise expeditions may trust
the experience and safety with which DAP
carries out passenger transportation between
Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams –using
their BAe fleet, with capacity for up to
90 passengers– to make their traveler
exchange operations, making the decision
to kick off part of their Antarctic operations
directly from the beautiful Puerto Williams.
The advantages this brings are countless,
highlighting the change to have a quicker
total travel in regards to the alternatives, as
well as passing by sites of exotic attractive,
such as Navarino Island.
CUEVA DEL MILODÓN:
LA CAVERNA QUE FUE GUARIDA
DE LA MEGA FAUNA
El monumento nacional
Cueva del Milodón,
a 25 kilómetros de
Puerto Natales,
MYLODON’S CAVE:
THE CAVE THAT WAS ONCE HOME
TO MEGA FAUNA
National monument
Mylodon’s Cave is
located 25km from
Puerto Natales, and
each year gathers a
growing number of
visitors.
An impressive sight for those who visit for
the first time. Still in the 21st century, one
may look into this rocky cavern and imagine
that eleven thousand years ago this was
the home of the extinguished mega fauna
that roamed Patagonia when man was first
stepping foot on these lands.
Today, this site called Mylodon’s Cave in
honor of this giant creature of the family of
the present time ground sloth that existed in
these areas, located roughly 25 kilometers
from Puerto Natales, is a true icon of tourism
in the area, establishing itself as one of
the main points of visit in the last decade.
Ten years ago, CONAF (National Forest
Corporation) figures showed 50 thousand
tourists a year in this site, while last year
closed with an impressive 85 thousand.
The Mylodon’s Cave area was appointed
as national monument by petition of the
National Monuments Council, gaining such
denomination in January of 1968.
It stands out for the protection of mammal
species such as the culpeo zorro (Andean
Fox), cougar, wild cat and skunk. It is also
possible to see birds such as the carancho,
eagle and condor. Lenga Beech and ñirre
complement the flora of this place.
Visitors may access interpretative trail “Cueva
Grande” (Large Cave) or an excursion trail that
connects practically all tourist attractions in
the area (Medium Cave – Small Cave –Devil’s
Chair). On these places lived eleven thousand
years ago the Patagonian Panther (Onca
Mesembrina), American horse (Hippidion)
and the Mylodon, fauna that may have had
contact with the first men stepping foot on
Patagonia.
Foto: CONAF
On 2013, new archaeological excavations
carried out by investigators from the Centro
de Estudios del Hombre Austral (Center
for Studies of Southernmost Man) of the
Patagonia Institute, University of Magallanes,
led by Fabiana Martin, made it possible to
find jaw pieces of a young sabre-toothed cat,
as well as remains of a dwarf horse’s leg.
These findings revitalized the interest of
investigators, marking the archaeological
importance of the Mylodon’s Cave area.
Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
El Turismo Antártico en Alza:
Crecimiento de 9% hubo en temporada pasada
Cada vez resulta más
atractivo el turismo
aero-crucero, el que
permite que los turistas
lleguen a Punta Arenas
y desde allí suban al
avión que los trasladará
hasta la isla Rey Jorge,
desde donde abordan
el barco para continuar
su viaje.
Hace dos décadas en el verano antártico
no había más de 20 barcos que realizaban
turismo en torno al Continente Blanco. Esa
9% growth registered last season
Air-cruise tours are
growing each year, as
they allow travelers to
arrive in Punta Arenas
and from there, board
an airplane which takes
them directly to King
George Island, from
where they continue the
journey.
Two decades ago, no more than 20 ships
carried tourists to the White Continent during
the summer. This figure is contrasting against
those registered last summer, when 87 ships
operated in the Antarctic area, especially in
the Antarctic Peninsula.
In the last summer season, 37.405 visitors
came to Antarctica, and with that a rise of
9% was experienced comparing to the 2012-
2013 season, when 34.316 tourists visited.
Most are attracted by the experience of
stepping foot on the cleanest, most solitary
grounds of the planet. Standing before a
landscape that is so different to anywhere in
the other continents. Where low temperatures
abound, and the ice and snow take over the
magnificent stage.
Visiting the South Shetland Islands, and
watching the natural colonies of penguins,
the leopard seals or sea lions, is one of the
attractions both for tourists and scientists,
with the diversity of birds and fauna, as well
as the landscape adorned by icebergs and
the beautiful shore.
According to data by the International
Association of Antarctica Tour Operators
(IAATO), travelers from China have visited
In the 2013-2014 season the rise in public
was experienced in all sectors of Antarctic
tourism, although the largest growth is
registered in operations that combine aircraft
and cruise ships (5%). This mode of travel
is carried out from Punta Arenas, where
travelers are taken by Antarctic Airways
plane to the Teniente Marsh airstrip at the
Frei Montalva Chilean Base, to hop aboard
their cruise.
Andrés Pivcevic, CEO at DAP, highlights the
rise this combination has enjoyed in the last
summers. “For this season, we are planning
to make approximately 60 flights, counting
from November 2014 to March 2015”, he
explains. He admits this represents a growth
of around 5% with respect to last season.
“Each year, the air-cruise mode is growing
in interest with Tour-Operators”, he follows.
This mode, according to the executive, will
most likely keep growing, as it allows the
tourist an arrival to Antarctica in less time.
This way, sailing through the Drake sea can
be avoided, being a two and a half day travel,
while tour-operators can keep costs down
and save time that would be spent taking
their ship from Antarctica to the cities of
Ushuaia or Punta Arenas for the exchange
of passengers.
Robert Fitz Roy junto a Charles Darwin o
mismos derroteros, ingresando a rincones

carnívoras a grandes coigües, canelos y
cipreses. En medio de todo este marco de
la naturaleza, una fauna extraordinaria, que
nos muestra desde pequeños crustáceos
hasta gigantescas ballenas jorobadas;
posibilidad.
FITZ ROY EXPEDITION CRUISES:
Fjords, canals and the hundreds of islands
that conform the Patagonian archipelago
hold the story of great sailors, adventurers
and historical facts that have become myths
of navigation. The Magellan Strait was for
many centuries the obligatory gateway for
discoverers, hydrographers, pirates and
corsairs, and constituted with Cape Horn
the mandatory route to connect Pacific and
Atlantic Oceans.
The hardship of its geography and the great
variety of landscapes, flora and fauna,
make these sites an embracing destination,
bringing those with the chance to sail these
waters closer to feeling the same sensations
TRUE EXPEDITIONS, MORE THAN TOURISM,
A TRUE EXPERIENCE.
and live the same experiences of the men
who discovered its mysteries through the
centuries, using navigation means that today
seem very primitive, nonetheless drafting the
cartography that is still in use today.
To relive the great feats of Ferdinand Magellan
in some geographical milestones; the epic
journeys of Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa;
the hydrographical travels of Robert Fitz
Roy with Charles Darwin, or simply to blend
oneself with the surroundings that were so
familiar to old canoeists and people like
the Yámana or Kawésqar, who populated
these places and opened the “Pasos de
Indio” (Indian gateways) that is possible to
observe from many corners.
Today, it is possible to experience all this with
the comfort of the present time, following the
same paths, entering the same shortcuts that
step outside traditional navigation routes,
Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
objective, which is to arrive in comfort and
with great service where others may not.
The trip’s concept is that the day’s program
is structured upon the mood, weather and
interest of its passengers, in a way that they
feel they are living a true expedition.
Tours and programs offered by Expedición
Fitz Roy cover the most attractive and
impressive parts of the archipelago and
interior seas of Tierra del Fuego and its
surrounding islands. Enjoying the sight of
amazing mountain chains such as Cordillera
Darwin, with hills as tall or even more than
Torres del Paine, with gigantic bodies of ice
such as Gran Campo Nevado on Muñoz
Gamero Peninsula, or the ice of islands
such as Santa Inés or Tierra del Fuego, are
some of the goals of our expedition cruises.
To allow the visitor to feel the sensation of
smallness, solitude and silence that these
far away places produce, so different to what
we are used to in everyday life.
The name Expedición Fitz Roy is a clue, as
it allows to think of this sailor’s extraordinary
feats, whom with great sacrifice but equally
great skill and boldness, sailed these waters,
uncharted at the time, taking notice of each
and every geographical milestone, drafting
maps and gathering scientific information.
Those travels are what inspire our programs
and routes in these expeditions, and on each
trip one may see hints of his presence, on
the name of islands, canals, fjords and hills
given by him, that are to this day the reference
in navigation charts and maps. The sailor of
today may feel part of these journeys, and
get to know the places that Charles Darwin
knew at the time and that served as base
to some of his theories.
Do not miss the chance to go back in time
and relive those moments, Expedición Fitz
Roy’s FORREST gives you that possibility.
and disembarking in paradisiacal locations,
surrounded by an amazing landscape and the
variety of flora that conforms the Patagonian
jungle: from tiny lichens, musk and carnivore
plants to great coigües, cinnamon trees
and cypresses. Amidst this nature painting,
extraordinary fauna is to be found, from
small crustaceans to gigantic humpback
whales; from small birds of the forest to
the impressive Andean Condor or the giant
petrel of the sea.
Expedición Fitz Roy offers that exactly,
the EXPERIENCE of reaching places that
perhaps no man has stepped on in centuries,
virgin and clean, impressive and imposing,
wild but attractive and holding inside many
great stories.
The FORREST is a ship adapted and
equipped with all necessary to fulfill this
DESDE PESCADOS, ALGAS Y CARNES:
COMIDA SALVAJE
PATAGÓNICA
Cada vez los turistas
buscan comer más
sano e incorporan en
sus peticiones platos
preparados a partir del
aprovechamiento de
algas. Otros buscan
probar guanacos y
Adventure at the End of the World
29

explica.
Piensa que las personas están ávidas de
probar productos nuevos o tradicionales con
preparaciones que sean distintas, innovando
en la forma de prepararlos.
Sin duda que para los visitantes del
extranjero, platos que incorporan centolla
y cordero, o calafate y ruibarbo, siguen
siendo un privilegio culinario característico
de estas tierras australes, sin embargo,
podrán encontrar hoy en la Patagonia toda
una nueva variedad de ingredientes de
esta tierra que sorprenderá sus paladares.
FROM FISH, SEAWEEDS AND MEATS:
PATAGONIA’S WILD FOOD
More and more,
tourists look to
eat healthier food
that incorporates
seaweeds into their
plate. Others want
to try guanaco, and
traditionalists stick
to their preference of
lamb and king crab.
To offer natural products that smell of sea and
pampa has been the objective in developing
a Patagonian gastronomy that captivates
travelers and is attracting more and more
national and foreign guests. Magallanes’
cuisine doesn’t have to promote itself only
with king crab or lamb, but it can also show
other native products such as guanaco, or
caiquén meat, fish, seafood and seaweeds.
But this kind of gastronomy has not sold
on its own. It has required a strong work of
preparations and innovations developed in
the search of experimenting with new flavors
that still keep that special mark in the “wild”
food of Patagonia.
Some of the main players in this several year
process have been touristic entrepreneur
and gastronomy investigator Lilian Riquelme
and her husband, chef Luis González, both
with over 20 years residing in Magallanes.
Innovating with regional cuisine was their
gamble.
Through the years, different restaurants
have been incorporating plates that include
non-traditional local products, and this has
meant that people from Magallanes look more
willing to try new flavors, compared to those
from other parts of the country.
Chef Luis González has spent many hours
experimenting with plates in which the
highlight is not limited to king crab or lamb.
“Patagonian cuisine is based on different
products today, but lamb and king crab
remain the top leaders or icons for the
rest of the country. We have also brought
forward plates that use guanaco meat and
local seaweeds, so we may offer a diversity
of cold or hot dishes”, he explains.
He believes people are willing to try new
products, or traditional dishes with a twist,
innovating in the way they are prepared.
Without a doubt, for foreign travelers, plates
that use king crab and land, or calafate
or ruibarbo are still a culinary privilege
characteristic of these southernmost lands,
however, today they are able to find a new
variety of ingredients in Patagonia that will
surprise their taste.
ANTÁRTICA: HELADA INMENSIDAD
Dos fotógrafos, dos puntos de vista diferentes,
Harambour y Diego Dicarlo a una misión
muy especial: volar con Antarctic Airways a
Isla Rey Jorge, y capturar la magnificencia
de su entorno natural.
El experimento resultó especialmente
interesante, puesto que Andrés viajó a fines
de diciembre de 2013, encontrándose con
un día relativamente luminoso, con una
gran cantidad de nieve recién caída. Diego,
en cambio, voló a comienzos de febrero
de 2014, en un día cubierto y helado. No
The experiment turned out specially
interesting, as Andrés traveled at the end
of December 2013, finding a relatively shiny
summer day and a great amount of snow
that had recently fallen. Diego, on the other
hand, flew beginning February 2014 on a
cold, dark day. Nevertheless, he was able
to visit Ardley Island with a group of tourists
and capture the beauty of the true kings of
these lands: the penguins.
The result: Antarctica, under two very
different points of view.
Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
MAGALLANES
No necesariamente, aunque
memorias y familias, amigos y alegrías, y aun
MAGALLANES
What is it that makes one feel link to a certain
land? To identify oneself with it, to put down
emotional roots in it. This doesn’t seem to
happen at any place, no matter if it fulfills
an imaginary list of characteristics deemed
perfect. Perhaps it is about the remembrance,
the memories, the images we keep as a
child and the smells that bring us back to our
early years? Not necessarily, though without
a doubt these constitute an important stone
in this private monument built in honor of the
homeland. Many have come from close and
from far to Magallanes, carrying their own
experiences and foreign customs, with
memories and families, friendships and
joys of their own, and even so, they fall
in love with these difficult lands.
I think “difficult” is somewhere in the mix
when explaining our roots. Magallanes is
the romantic land, the land of adventure,
land of difficult, solitary nature. Magallanes
is the tree that barely grows, shaped by
the wind. Magallanes is the unbelievable
cold. Magallanes is the summer day that
never seems to end, and the endless winter
nights that propose long reunions around
the fireplace. Magallanes is the trembling
weather; that aloof sun, and those emperor
clouds. Magallanes is the great moon, so
large that it feels heavy, wanting to lean
back on the Strait’s waters. But Magallanes
is also those treacherous waters, that have
fooled many others like the moon.
Magallanes is the end of the world. It’s a
snowy village immersed in the scent of
firewood, it is a mountain jaw, and the wild
beauty of the jungle. It is also the cosmopolite,
touristic, diverse city that knows about the
modern way, takes what it needs from it,
and throws away the excess.
Magallanes is the harsh reality of its cold
wind, which shapes the flora as well as man
and his work. It is crude reality that fights
the permanent simulations that dwell in the
leisure of warmer climates. it is reality that
calls and joins people, it is a window into
different forms of social and natural evolution.
Magallanes, with its sudden breath of freezing
fresh air, is a window. Magallanes, Is truly
my favorite window.
It doesn’t matter how far I walk, swim or fly
away from it, the glow of Magallanes and
its people will always stay with me. As well
as the memory of its wind, and its calm and
shiny summer dawns. And it will be, forever,
that piece of earth I will yearn to see, at
least once more.
100 AÑOS DE AVIACIÓN CIVIL EN MAGALLANES
El 23 de agosto de
2014 se cumplió el
centenario del primer
vuelo civil sobre
Punta Arenas.
has passed since
the first civilian
flight over
Punta Arenas.
of 1914 by ship, receiving his airplane on
August 16th, just days before leaving his
mark on the history of aviation.
On the 23th he actually achieved two flights,
where he showed off his skills as an acrobatic
pilot, doing a “loop” with a wind of 30km/h.
On the second flight, with a registered with
of 70 km/h word of mouth is the engine oil
100 YEARS
A century has past, marked by the effort of
pioneers, who with courage and perseverance
have been able to build a solid air activity in
Magallanes, that stands out in the country.
DAP joined this history 34 years ago,
forming part of the last third of this century
of Magallanic aviation, and in such time it
has stood as a strong regional airline with
expansion to other destinations, both national
and international.
As recognition to its trajectory, on 2011, Mr.
Andrés Pivcevic Rajcevic, CEO of DAP was
awarded the “Cross of Aeronautical Merit”
by the General Direction of Civilian Aviation
of Chile, which acknowledges the work of
pilots and proffesionals whom from their
diverse areas have followed the spirit and
will of those who started it all.
Identidad Magallánica (Magallanic Heritage
and Identity) celebrated a 100 years since
August 23rd of 1914, the day in which pilot
Luis Omar Page overflew the city of Punta
Arenas.
THE HISTORICAL
EPISODE
It all started when a Bathat Sánchez
monoplane, sporting an engine that barely
made 60 horsepower flew over the hats of
Punta Arenas a hundred years ago. A plane
built with materials today destined for mere
replica airplanes, and in times when registers
by historian Mateo Martinic showed the
existence of just three automobiles in the
whole of Punta Arenas.
The feat was achieved by Luis Omar Page,
pilot born in Talca, Chile, retired by the time
from military duties, and with a certain fame
of being fond of stuns and acrobatics. He
arrived at Punta Arenas the 24th of July
INSULA
IN ALBIS
Una experiencia
audiovisual
en Antártica.
En febrero de 2014 el dúo electrónico
magallánico LLUVIA ÁCIDA realizó el
segundo concierto de su carrera en la
Antártica, presentando su obra “INSULA IN
explicaron.
paisajes imponentes, fauna nativa, hombres
Presentation at Eduardo Frei Montalva Base, Antarctica.
durante casi una década en variadas obras”,
explicaron. Es que además de los discos
“INSULA IN ALBIS” y “ANTARTIKOS”, LLUVIA
y redes sociales.
Adventure at the End of the World

Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
On February 2014 electronic duo from
Magallanes LLUVIA ÁCIDA performed for
the second time in their career on Antarctic
grounds, presenting their work “INSULA IN
ALBIS” at Eduardo Frei Montalva Chilean
Base. There, before Chilean residents and
those invited from Chinese, Russian and
Uruguayan bases, they played their music to
images that show different aspects of natural
and human life in King George Island, of the
South Shetland Archipelago. Héctor Aguilar
and Rafael Cheuquelaf arrived at the base
after a two hour flight from Punta Arenas,
thanks to the support of Antarctic Airways,
which also helped them when giving their
first concert at the same location on March
2007, when they presented their work
“ANTARTIKOS” (2005).
INSULA IN ALBIS
An audiovisual
experience in
Antarctica.
The return of the duo to King George Island
had the purpose of showing the work they
developed there earlier, which isn’t typical
from artists that have had the opportunity
to perform in Antarctica, as they explained.
The making of “INSULA IN ALBIS” counted
with support from Chilean Antarctic Institute
(INACH), entity which coordinated travel
and stay of the musicians at scientific
base “Profesor Julio Escudero”, when they
visited in March 2013. There, they made
audio recordings with ambient, contact and
electromagnetic induction microphones,
registering sounds of nature, machines
and telecommunications. These sound
samples where then used to create 12
tunes, composing a 47 minute long record.
This music then serves as the soundtrack
to a 50 minute long movie, which shows
the impressive landscapes, native life, men
working and communicating on radio, the
effort of men present in this territory, the
amazing infrastructure of Chinese “Great
Wall” Base, the mysticism of Russian
“Bellingshausen” and the warmth of “Artigas”
Uruguayan base.
According to LLUVIA ÁCIDA, “the subject
of this work is the cooperation between
men of different cultures, which is a true
Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
example in a world divided by conflicts of
diverse nature”. Beyond records such as
“INSULA IN ALBIS” and “ANTARTIKOS”,
LLUVIA ÁCIDA collaborated in 2012 with
INACH in the edition and musicalization of
a documentary called “El Continente de la
Luz: Primeras Expediciones Chilenas en la
Antártica (1947-1949)” (The Continent of
Light: First Chilean Expeditions in Antarctica),
developed with historical recorded material
that was restored by the National Cinema
Library.
Nicolás Pivcevic, New Business Manager at
DAP, pointed out that “it brings satisfaction
to our company to be able to contribute not
only by generating a connection between
Antarctica and continental Chile from the
point of view of transportation, but also by
supporting scientific and cultural development
in the territory, and in this particular case,
with an audiovisual work that represents life
in the White Continent in an artistic way”.
And precisely in such a way of thinking,
this second concert had the purpose of
affirming the Antarctic identity of Magallanes
through Art.
Images of the event were edited into a new
video, made freely available online and on
social media. The record and movie may
be downloaded free of charge from website
denominada The Botany of the Antarctic
Voyage. En la segunda parte de esta obra,
titulada Flora Novae Zealandiae (1853), se
describen 1767 plantas y se aventura la
primera explicación de la cual se tuviera
registro acerca del porqué de las similitudes
florísticas entre continentes australes tan
distantes en la actualidad.
Hooker vio en estos patrones disjuntos
evidencias de un origen común en una
masa ancestral de tierra. En ese entonces
su controvertido postulado encontró varios
detractores, incluso Darwin, quien sostenía
que esta distribución disjunta de organismos
emparentados en Sudamérica, Tasmania,
Australia y Nueva Zelandia obedecía a
patrones de migración a larga distancia a
partir del hemisferio norte.
del hemisferio sur. Nothofagus (Familia
THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE CHILEAN FOREST
He was only 22 years old and the youngest
the last large naval exploration efforts (sailing
from Tasmania in September of 1839). He
could hardly have guessed at how those
four years of sailing would affect his life
whose destinations included Antarctica,
Tierra del Fuego, Australia, Tasmania, and
New Zealand, where he conducted extensive
botanical collections, a tremendous body
of work was produced as part of the thenbustling
British scientific industry in the
middle of the 19th century.
Some of the results of this journey were
published in a work of six volumes called
The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage. In
the second part of this work, entitled Flora
Novae Zealandiae (1853), he described
1767 plants and put forth the first recorded
explanation of the floristic similarities among
continents of the southern hemisphere that
are now so far apart.
Hooker saw evidence in these disjointed
patterns of a common origin, in an ancestral
land mass. In those times his controversial
theories ran up against a number of
detractors, including Darwin, who maintained
that this discontinuous distribution of related
organisms in South America, Tasmania,
Australia, and New Zealand belonged to
long-distance migratory patterns that began
in the Northern Hemisphere.
Nothofagus: key or unsolved puzzle?
Nothofagus, a group of 36 species of tree
and bushes, has been considered one of
the key genera of angiosperms to shed
some light on the evolutionary and migratory
patterns of the Southern Hemisphere biota.
Nothofagus (Family Nothofagaceae) actually
has ten species in Chile, which dominate the
wooded landscapes of the austral region of
South America, commonly known as oak,
coihue, lenga, ñirre, raulí, ruil, and hualo.
Nothofagaceae would have arrived or
diversified on the Antarctic Peninsula during
the Lower Campanian (about 80 million
years ago) with other components of the
current Sub Antarctic forests, together with
remnants of the extinct Cretaceous flora.
All of this has brought about the need to
look closely into the origin and distribution
of Nothofagus. There are a great number
of phylogeneticists who support the theory
of long-distance transoceanic dispersion,
which after 160 years still challenges those
who consider this genus to be the symbol
of the patterns of distribution inherited from
the breakup of Gondwana.
The high degree of exclusivity of Antarctic
flora during the Cretaceous offers no support
(at least during the Lower Campanian-
Maastrichtian interval, approximately 80 to 68
million years ago) to the existence of terrestrial
bridges between these land masses. The
land bridges between Patagonia and the
Antarctic Peninsula are considered critical
for the dispersal of plants and terrestrial
animals, a condition now closely related
with a drastic drop in the sea levels, the
atmospheric CO 2
concentration and the fall
in the global temperature. These climatic
conditions, together with the mountainous
terrain resulting from orographic precipitation,
high CO2 levels and proximity to the volcanic
arc, moderation of extreme temperatures and
rainfall distributed throughout the year, have
brought about ideal conditions for the rapid
establishment and growth of a particular
type of forest.
The assemblage originated in the Antarctic
Peninsula could be considered the
predecessor of the modern Patagonian
forests. New arguments have recently
expanded the debate over the origins and
the persistence of this southern temperate
biota, indeed the Valdivian forest and the
mixed-forest eco-region on the west coast
of southernmost South America, primarily
in Chile and western Argentina.
A recent campaign was conducted by a group
of researchers from the INACH Paleobiology
Laboratory for Patagonia and Antarctica, the
University of Heidelberg, the Universidad de
Chile and the Chilean Museum of Natural
History, working from the Las Chinas valley to
the northern sector of the Chilean province of
Última Esperanza. The discoveries included
the first finding of dinosaur fossils in the
Magallanes region, and underlying these
was a layer with a large number of fossil
plant imprints with at least ten angiosperm
morphs and two different types of Nothofagus.
As a result, the ancestral origins of the
Southern South America forests have a
new date: the end of the Maastrichtian (66
million years ago) giving direct evidence that
during at least the last million years of the
age of dinosaurs there were Nothofagus and
several accompanying elements, crossing the
bridge among both continents. The dispersal
capacity of the Nothofagus’ fruits is extremely
restricted and its germination viability is
short in time, as well as its seeds cannot
disperse even across short saltwater barriers.
Thus, leaves provide good evidence for the
existence of a land corridor to Antarctica.
This corridor would also be supported by
the finding of an alleged hadrosaur tooth
in Antarctica.
More than 160 years and the publication of
a thousand or so scientific papers on the
subject, the thesis first proposed by Joseph
Dalton Hooker remains very much alive.
Adventure at the End of the World

Aventura al fin del mundo 2014 - 2015
Antes de llegar a Punta Arenas:
EL RICO PASADO HISTÓRICO DE
RÍO SECO
Su antiguo frigorífico y
los restos de su muelle
son los íconos de un
pasado próspero en
que se desarrollaron
masivas exportaciones
iban a Puerto Natales.
American Export Syndicate Ltda. Los equipos
fueron importados desde Inglaterra, al igual
que los primeros funcionarios que trabajaron
en este frigorífico.
Llegaron a trabajar más de 300 personas
siendo de los más importantes de la
Patagonia, con un promedio de faenamiento
anual que superaba los 230 mil animales.
Hasta el muelle llegaban los barcos,
conocidos también como “caponeros”, los
que llevaban la carne de exportación, las
menudencias, grasas y cueros, al mercado
europeo, especialmente a Inglaterra.
a Punta Arenas.
a Punta Arenas. Sólo habían unas cuantas
casas.
Just before arriving at Punta Arenas:
THE RICH HISTORICAL PAST OF RÍO SECO
Its old industrial
refrigerator and
the remains of its
dock are signs of
a prosperous past
of massive meat
exports.
When nearing Punta Arenas by route 9
Norte, and before km 14 a little town called
Río Seco stands out. More than one visitor
has wrongly heard that this is Punta Arenas.
However this small town that stands out for
its diversity country houses holds a historical
past that was forged in the beginnings of
the 20 th century.
In the past, Río Seco was a place to rest,
for those traveling from Punta Arenas to the
Argentinean Patagonia, or those heading to
Puerto Natales.
Ernestina Velásquez Berríos, widower since
1968, mother of eight and grandmother
of over thirty children is one of the most
senior residents of Río Seco. She vividly
remembers the refrigerator’s apogee because
her husband, Remigio Levinieri used to
work there.
Famous cutter Yelcho stopped at this very
dock when it was returning from Antarctica led
by Luis Pardo. This took place on September
3 rd of 1916 and the goal was to let Punta
Arenas know that the expedition to rescue
the 22 survivors of Ernest Shackleton’s
“Endurance” shipwreck was a success.
An area that holds a great part of such
historical past is that located in what is
called “the old road”, which for many years
was made of gravel and was recently paved.
There one may see the old building where
the first industrial refrigerator of Magallanes
was in use, today converted into a half-used
warehouse, and crossing the street from
here, the old dock of Río Seco.
The refrigerator, which operated from 1905
to 1964 was built and used by the South
American Export Syndicate Ltda. The
equipment was imported from England, the
same origin of the refrigerator’s first workers.
More than 300 people were employed here,
making it the most important in Patagonia,
with a yearly average of more than 230.000
slaughtered animals.
Up to the old dock arrived the ships, then
referred to as “caponeros”, which took the
meat for export, as well as grease and
leathers to the European market, specially
England.
“The caponero ships dropped anchors and
the meat was taken on boats that waited at
the dock, and these sailed to the ship, which
waited near the dock to load the meat. The
slaughtered lamb was frozen and wrapped”,
she remembers.
“Those were good times, because twice a
week the refrigerator used to sell meat to the
locals and the prices were very beneficial.
Río Seco’s biggest peak was linked to the
work of the refrigerator. After its closure,
things have gone down”, Ernestina admits.
THE DOCK THAT
RECEIVED YELCHO
But also, Río Seco’s dock was strategic at
the time. It’s hard to believe today that those
pieces wood and pilings hold the secret to
a past of intense ship activity, where many
of them stopped to load products or gather
supplies before continuing their journey to
Punta Arenas.
Mrs. Ernestina remembers she came to
live in Río Seco just married on the 2 nd of
August of 1944, when the town was just a
small gathering near the shore. The same
path vehicles that take the “old road” travel
these days.
“There were many milk producers and farms
here. Many drove carriages to sell milk in
Punta Arenas. Just a few houses stood here,
not like today. Every fifteen days, everyone
attended the social dance held at the local
house”, she adds.
However, she feels Río Seco deserves a
better future and should count with more
support. For many years they have fought to
have a local firemen company so they don’t
have to wait for help from Punta Arenas in
case of an emergency. In spite of all that, she
is happy to live in Río Seco, and remember
the “golden years” of this small town, 14
kilometers from downtown Punta Arenas.
#PUQ
nosotros conectando #PUQ, #WPR y #WPU,
con vuelos a #TNM durante la temporada
antártica. =)
#PUQ
the Regional Capital city of Punta Arenas.
However, to be more specific, it’s actually the
designation for Punta Arenas’ International
Airport Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo
in IATA code (International Air Transport
Association), the airport that corresponds
to the Strait’s Pearl.
It surely seems social media is here to stay.
And with the ever-growing link between
users from the main social networks, the
“hashtag” has come up as a very effective
way to index conversations, be it with the
point of helping to search for topics, or as
a way to put a signature of identity to our
messages.
Well, this has meant that after a while the
enigmatic “PUQ” has turned itself into a
recurrent brand among Twitter users from
Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region,
through the use of the #PUQ as a badge
those who tweet from and to Magallanes
use with pride.
Travelers usually wonder “Why PUQ?” and
now “foreign” Internet users do the same.
As is expected, these letters reference
It’s quite the novelty that in the whole of Chile,
Magallanes seems to be the only territory
with its own widely used hashtag, but even
more so that it’s related to an aeronautical
reference. The thing is, without a doubt hats
are not the only this used to flying in this
land of intense winds: Magallanes is the
largest region in the country, but with the
lowest population density.
Under these conditions, the airplane has
become the preferred means to join the main
points of the Region in a safe and efficient
manner, as well as joining Magallanes with
the rest of the country. And those who fly
with DAP daily connecting #PUQ, #WPR
and #WPU, and to #TNM during Antarctic
season know this very well. =)
ANTÁRTICA FULL DAY
On our aircraft you will fly over the Magellan Strait, Tierra del Fuego
Island, Darwin Mountain Range, the mythical Cape Horn and the
raft Drake Passage, finally arriving at King George Island, gateway
are located. Here you can also find the Chilean village “Villa Las
Estrellas”, place where several Chilean families live all year round.
