6| Año 2011, núm. 9Viento y trapoWADA publishes list of prohibited substances for 2012You can get WADA List App for free in iTunesMontreal, Canada –Following approval bythe World Anti-DopingAgency’s (WADA) ExecutiveCommittee on September17, the 2012 The list ofprohibited substances andmethods is now available.Noteworthy changes to theList, which will come intoforce on January 1, 2012,include:Formoterol added as anexception to beta-2 agonistsOne of the most significantchanges is the removal offormoterol from Section 3‘Beta-2 Agonists’ of the List when taken byinhalation at therapeutic dosages.Taking into account recent research resultsand requests by members of the sportscommunity, inhaled formoterol at therapeuticdoses is no longer prohibited.The List prohibits the administration of allbeta-2 agonists except salbutamol (maximum1600 micrograms over 24 hours), salmeterolwhen taken by inhalation, and nowformoterol (maximum 36 micrograms takenover 24 hours).The issue of beta-2 agonists will continueto be a focus of WADA’s research activity inorder to ensure that the administration oflarge doses or by systemic routes of thesesubstances is prevented and prohibited, butthat the appropriate care and treatment ofasthmatic athletes is facilitated.Alcohol and beta-blockersAt the request of the Federation Internationaledes Quilleurs (FIQ), alcohol is no longerincluded on the List as a prohibited incompetitionsubstance for ninepin and tenpinbowling.After a review by WADA and followingdiscussions with stakeholders, bobsleighand skeleton, curling, modern pentathlon,motorcycling, sailing and wrestling havealso been removed from the list of sportsincluded in the List in which beta-blockersare prohibited.Nicotine placed on monitoring programIn order to detect potential patterns of abuse,nicotine has been placed on WADA’s 2012Monitoring Program.It is NOT WADA’s intention to target smokers,rather to monitor the effects nicotine can haveon performance when taken in oral tobaccoproducts such as snus.Nicotine is one of several stimulants addedto the Monitoring Program, along with thenarcotics hydrocone and tramadol. Out-ofcompetitionuse of glucocorticosteroids hasalso been included.Under Article 4.5 of the World Anti-DopingCode, WADA is mandated to establish amonitoring program regarding substancesthat are not on the List, but which the Agencywishes to monitor in order to detect potentialpatterns of misuse.Mobile-friendly formatsIn an effort to provide stakeholders withtools to support anti-doping activities,and following the successful iPhone Appintroduced in 2011, the 2012 Prohibited Listis available on iPhones, and for the first timeon other mobile devices.In addition to the English, French and Spanishversions of the List, it is also now possibleto add additional languages.
