Bienvenidos a Maracaibo!
Maracaibo no escapa a la particular
historia de los pueblos latinoamericanos,
muchos de los cuales fueron
refundamos en más de una ocasión.
No cabe dudas que desde aquel 1529,
esta tierra tiene definida su idiosincrasia,
de la que músicos y poetas se
han dignado en llamarla: “Maracaibo
Mía”, “Tierra del Sol Amada”, “Maracaibo
en la noche relampaguea”, un
sinfín de expresiones que resumen
su valor histórico-cultural.
No es para menos tanta inspiración
de un pueblo que cuenta con
un recurso humano excepcional,
una geografía de mosaico, en la que
encontramos el Lago de Maracaibo,
conectado al Golfo de Venezuela, el
más grande de América del Sur y
uno de los más antiguos lagos en la
tierra.
Además de la expresión cultural que
nos identifica, la Gaita Zuliana, tenemos
el sello de la religiosidad popular
que ubica a su patrona, la Virgen de
Chiquinquirá, en un sitial de honor.

Welcome to Maracaibo!
Maracaibo is no exception to the
particular history of Latin American
people and towns, many of which
were re-founded on more than one
occasion.
There is no doubt that since 1529,
this land has defined its characteristics
where musicians and poets have
deigned to call her by different names:
“Maracaibo Mía”, “Tierra del
Sol Amada”, “Maracaibo en la Noche
Relampaguea”, many expressions
that summarize its historical and cultural
values.
Undoubtedly this inspiration is for
people with an exceptional human
resource with a varied geography
where we find the Maracaibo Lake
connected to the Gulf of Venezuela,
the largest in South America and one
of the oldest lakes on earth.

Besides a cultural musical expression
that identifies us, the “Gaita zuliana”,
we have the influence of a popular
religious belief that places the Virgen

MARACAIBO Y SU HISTORIA
HISTORY OF MARACAIBO
Las características geográficas
e históricas de Maracaibo
la hacen una ciudad particular
A través del lago recibimos la influencia
andaluza de los conquistadores, de
quienes heredamos la particular forma
de hablar : rápida, fuerte y con el
“vos” para referirse a “tú” o “usted”,
en la cotidianidad. ¿Vos qué queréis?,
interrogará un auténtico “maracucho”,
gentilicio adoptado por los nacidos en
esta tierra.
Maracaibo es la capital del estado Zulia,
principal productor petrolero, agropecuario
y ganadero del país. Está organizada
territorialmente en 18 parroquias:
Bolívar, Santa Lucía, Olegario Villalobos,
Coquivacoa, Juana de Ávila, Idelfonso
Vásquez, Chiquinquirá, Cacique Mara,
Cecilio Acosta, Manuel Dagnino, Cristo
de Aranza, Luis Hurtado Higuera, Francisco
Eugenio Bustamante, Raúl Leoni,
Carracciolo Parra Pérez, Venancio Pulgar,
Antonio Borjas Romero y San Isidro.
La cultura juega un papel fundamental
en la ciudad, donde sus habitantes se
han caracterizado por la creación de su
propio género musical, “La gaita”, la cual
es tradicional en las fiestas navideñas, y
marcan el inicio de la feria en honor a
la patrona del Zulia, la Virgen de Chiquinquirá
en el mes de noviembre; y de
otros ritmos con calidad de exportación.
Además de venerar a La Chinita
como cariñosamente llaman los lugareños
a la Virgen, también se venera a San
Benito con sus tambores y armonías
que dejan sentir las distintas influencias
culturales en nuestro territorio.
El clima de la ciudad es su principal
característica. Su temperatura media
es de 27,5 centígrados, pudiendo llegar
hasta los 45ºC entre los meses de mayo
y septiembre por lo que es conocida
como la “Tierra del Sol Amada”. En la
noche, la ciudad nos regala una brisa
fresca que viene del lago y es la delicia
para propios y visitantes.

Maracaibo is a particular city
because of geographical and
historical features.
We inherited the particular way of speaking
from the Andalusian influence of our
conquerors.
The capital of Zulia state, is the major
oil,agriculture and livestock producer.It is
geographically divided into 18 parishes:
Bolívar, Santa Lucia, Olegario Villalobos,
Coquivacoa , Juana de Ávila, Ildefonso
Vásquez , Chiquinquirá , Cacique Mara ,
Cecilio Acosta, Manuel Dagnino , Cristo de

The city has its own musical genre, the
gaita, which is played during the Christmas
holyday season and begins in November
with the feast in honor of the patron
saint of Zulia, the Virgin of Chiquinquirá.
There are other rhythms with export quality
. In addition to worshiping La Chinita
as locals affectionately call the Virgin, also
venerated San Benito with their drums
and harmonies.It shows different cultural
influences in our territory.
The climate of Maracaibo is its main feature..

BANDERA DE MARACAIBO
/ FLAG OF MARACAIBO
El 8 de septiembre de 1991 se adoptó
el Estandarte de San Sebastián,
patrono de la ciudad, como Bandera
Oficial del municipio Maracaibo,
constituida por los colores blanco,
simbolizando la pureza del santo patrono;
el azul, la nobleza del Lago de
Maracaibo y el rojo, la sangre derramada
por el mártir al morir luchando
por sus ideales; en franjas unidas
y horizontales en el orden expresado
de superior a inferior y en su parte
izquierda superior de la franja blanca
tiene, a todo color, el Escudo de Armas
de la ciudad.
ESCUDO DE ARMAS
/ COAT OF ARMS
El Escudo de Armas de la ciudad de
Maracaibo, fue otorgado por el Rey
de España Felipe IV. Se puede observar
el texto “Muy noble y leal”
en las bandas que posee el escudo;
además está conformado por dos
columnas y un navío en el medio,
como símbolo de la barra del lago
de Maracaibo. Las fechas desplegada
en las bandas – 1634 en la derecha y
1965 a la izquierda, indican el año de
la concesión del escudo autorizado
por el Rey Felipe IV y el año de su
readaptación por parte del Concejo
Municipal del Distrito Maracaibo, hoy

FLAG OF MARACAIBO
On September 8, 1991, the Banner of
San Sebastian, patron of the city, was
adopted as the Official Flag of Maracaibo,

for their ideals; in horizontal bands from
top to bottom,its upper left corner of

The Coat of Arms of the city of Maracaibo
was granted by King Philip IV of
Spain. You can read “Very Noble and Loyal”
on the bands,there are two columns
and a ship in the middle, as a symbol of
the there Chanel Lake Maracaibo. The
dates displayed in the bands,1634 and
1965 on the right to the left indicate
the year of the concession authorized
by King Philip IV and the year of their
rehabilitation by the City Council of the
Maracaibo District,today known as Municipality
of Maracaibo

La tradición cuenta que una lavandera
halló en el Lago una tablita que destinó
a cubrir una tinaja. Al observar algunos
trazos en la madera, la colgó en la
pared. Unos golpes provenientes de la
tabla llamaron su atención para observar
que la imagen, que correspondía a
una virgen y estaba iluminada con resplandor.
Desde entonces y en la medida
que crecía el fervor de los Zulianos,
se hicieron necesarias varias ampliaciones
que elevaron la iglesia de San Juan
de Dios a iglesia parroquial hasta que
en 1855 invirtió su nombre original y
pasó a llamarse Nuestra Señora de
Chiquinquirá y San Juan de Dios.

de la artesanía son muy variables y es
recomendable llevar efectivo.

MARACAIBO MISTERIOSA
MYSTERIOUS MARACAIBO
Para los zulianos son muy importantes
las historias de fantasmas y
apariciones. Estas historias son contadas
por los abuelos a sus nietos,
y transmitidas de generación en generación.
Forman parte de la cultura
del marabino y que está dispuesto a
contar esas historias a los más valientes
visitantes.
EL FANTASMA DE LA CASA DE LA CAPITULACION
/ CAPITULATION HOUSE GHOST
Era la residencia del juez de Maracaibo,
su familia, y la niñera Josefa, se
dice que el yerno tenía una historia
de amor con Josefa, que despertó los
celos de su esposa. Un día Josefa fue
encontrada muerta en el patio trasero
con 7 heridas de arma blanca en
el pecho, toda la familia huyó y nunca
se le volvió a ver. Se dice que el fantasma
de Josefa Caballero camina por
las noches en la casa capitular, donde
se escuchan sus gritos y lamentos.
Muchos afirman haber visto manchas
de sangre de Josefa en una de las paredes
de la casa.
Se cuenta que uno de los más famosos
cantantes de tangos, Carlos
Gardel se hospedó una noche en
este hotel en 1935, actualmente se
encuentra en ruinas, pero muchos
afirman que escuchan por las noches
el sonido de los tangos y que algunas
veces han visto la elegante figura de
Gardel asomada en la ventana.
For the locals there are very important

It was the residence of the Judge of Maracaibo
and Josefa the nanny. It is said
that his son had a love affair with Josefa.It

One day Josefa was found dead in the
backyard with 7 stab wounds in the
chest
The entire family ran away and no one
saw them again. It is said that the ghost
of Josefa Caballero walks in the house
at night where her screams and cries
are heard. Many claim to have seen
Josefa`s bloodstain on one of the walls
of the house.
EL FANTASMA DEL HOTEL GRANADA
/ HOTEL GRANADA’S GHOST
It is said that one of the most famous
singers of tangos, Carlos Gardel stayed
for one night at this hotel in 1935 which
it is now in ruins, but many people claim
they hear at night the sound of tangos
and they have sometimes seen Gardel’s
elegant figure leaning on the window.

Septiembre de 1.529,por Ambrosio
Alfinger y la llamo Villa de Maracaibo,
fue refundada en 1.569
por el Cap. Alonso Pacheco y en
1.574 se refunda nuevamente con
el nombre de Nueva Zamora de
La Laguna de Maracaibo en honor
al Gobernador Mazariegos, nativo
de la Ciudad de Zamora, España

El Museo Arquidiocesano Obispo
Lasso ubicado en la Calle Carabobo
esquina Obispo Lasso, fue
fundado el 24 de Octubre de

de 1.991. Dentro de su amplia
colección sacra se encuentra la
silla en la que se sentó el Papa
San Juan Pablo II cuando visito
Venezuela en el año 1.985,la primera
corona que se realizo para
la imagen de La Chinita y la replica
del antiguo Altar Mayor de La
Catedral de Maracaibo

Museum, located on Carabobo
Street at the Obispo Lasso corner,
was founded on October 23, 1990
and inaugurated on June 24, 1991.
Part of its vast sacred collection
contains the chair where Pope
Saint John Paul II sat when he visited
Venezuela in 1985, the first
crown made for the image of Our
Lady of Chiquinquirá (“La Chinita”)
and the replica of the main altar of
Maracaibo’s Cathedral.
