FARHANA
K h a n - M a t t h i e s
Rabindranath Tagore :
Indian Poet & winner of Noble Prize for Literature 1941
“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,
Where knowledge is free,
Where the world has not been broken by narrow domestic walls,
Where the words come out from the depth of truth,
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection,
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
into the dreary desert sand of dead habit,
Where the mind is led forward into ever-widening thought and action,
Into that heaven of freedom, let my country awake.”
también de los gozos y esperanzas de la humanidad; la exuberancia de la vida animal y vegetal de nuestra selva amazónica;
No pinta directamente escenas horribles
Facets of the artist
Caleidoscopio Creativo Creative Kaleidoscope
Caleidoscopio Creativo
Creative Kaleidoscope
En palabras de la artista : In the words of the artist :
The Creative mind is a vast Kaleidoscope
of multi-faceted mutations.
Each twist & turn of the imagination brings a colourful
burst of sparkling insights.
Prismatic patterns constantly evolve, overflow,
& seek ways of expression.
Only a small fraction of inspiration is ultimately captured.
Painted on canvas. Written on paper. Photographed
on film.
Carved in stone. Or played on an instrument.
Most ideas are nebulous & momentary;
A complex spiritual Sacred Hunger can be aroused
in search of a truth from the primordial Stream
of Consciousness.
This flows deep within our common psyche.
Like a changing, bubbling water table evolved over time,
the stream is enriched by the Human Condition.
Experience of Love, Hate, Joy, Pain, Ambition, Fear.
The certain knowledge that in time one must die.
This Sacred Hunger is a key to the imagination which
can be polished by stimulating the senses
of sight, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting.
The ultimate expression of creativity is the imagination
itself.
No material form of art can ever compete with
it or replace it.
It is possible to become an artist in the mind by opening
one’s individual perception to the Creative Kaleidoscope.
It takes courage to face & accept an inner truth where there
is no hiding place, but it is an essential part of living life
as a piece of art which improves moment by moment
and in time becomes a gift for all those near & far.
“Tenemos mucho más en común de lo que admitimos;
Somos
capaces de profesar gran sensibilidad, honor, coraje,
bondad, amistad y amor.
Luego regresó a Londres
entre Londres y New York.
Introduction: Farhana Khan Matthies
Farhana has dual nationality, British & Pakistani.
Her parents were diplomats & from an early age she began
to travel the world. She has lived in Asia, Europe, North
America & Latin America, amongst different ethnic peoples
& religions. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Protestants, Catholics,
Jews & Muslims. This experience makes her feel at home everywhere
& it has greatly influenced her work.
“We have far more in common than we acknowledge;
most importantly we love & hate alike & we cannot live
without hope. We are capable of deep sentimentality,
honour, courage, kindness, friendship & love. But like molten
lava within a volcano, we have a potential for aggression &
violence, specially if we face social injustice & hopelessness.
There are no chosen people, rich or poor, and any
violence, great or small, is a crime against humanity.”
Farhana knew from a early age that she would be a painter.
After finishing high school in Rome, she joined the
Karachi Arts Council & had her first solo exhibition at the age
of nineteen.
She then returned to London to study further at the Croyden
College of Art.
After graduating, she ran her own product design company
for a decade, based between London & New York.
In 1987 she met her husband, Stephan, in Berlin; the same
year she returned to painting exclusively.
In 1989 the Berlin wall came down, a profound experience
for those who were there.
Farhana believes that: “Being an artist brings social
responsibilities.
Social & economic crises take our attention away from
the most important issue facing us, protection of this beautiful
planet, conservation of its flora & fauna for future generations”.
In 2008 Stephan & Farhana moved from Berlin to Quito:
“We think Ecuador is a fascinating country, with inspirational
landscape, an interesting diverse culture & warm people
who welcome the stranger as one of their own”.
Pandora, oil on canvas & gold leaf – 150 cm x 150 cm – 2010
A beautiful daughter of the Greek gods, was sent to earth bearing a gift, a jeweled box, and told not to open it under any circumstance.
But her curiosity could not be contained & she opened the box. What she let escape was ‘ evil ’, which spread out into the world &
contaminated the goodness which was there before. Luckily, hidden deep in the box was ‘hope’.
–no soy científica.
Evolution versus Revolution
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
In 1953 the double helix of the DNA was discovered,
and half a century later, in 2001, the human genome was
completed. Scientists attached the four proteins, Adenine,
Cytosine, Guanine & Thymine to three primary colours,
red, yellow, blue & black. Using this ingenious method &
special software, they were able to decipher the chemical
balance of the proteins in each gene, making the
human map a colourful spectrum of genetic information. The
naked eye can distinguish between sixty colors. I use these to
question where the new genetic science is taking humanity & I
find the question inspirational. This work is primarily art; I am
no scientist.
Science tells us it took six million years of natural selection
to evolve
from our genetic cousin, the ape & called it evolution.
Within my lifetime & the next few hundred years the
species as we know it will experience a revolution. Natural
selection will be replaced by design, causing the human
species to branch into many subspecies. Changes in
the brain using nano technology to enhance intelligence
& creativity, plus changes in the physical features to make
one taller, stronger, bigger & therefore better, will form the
base of this revolution.
Cloning & mutation will become part of life in the fight for
domination.
We will be able to choose what our children look like &
how they behave; the temptation will be just too great.
Science as a part of human curiosity is unstoppable. It is
part of our great success but may also become part of our
ultimate failure.
The Greek myth of Pandora underlined that knowledge
& discovery can be both Good & Evil. It is repeated in
the Biblical story of the banishment of Adam & Eve. Human
search for knowledge has a dangerous element; every
advance we make comes at a price.
But now that Pandora’s box is open, we cannot reverse
& retreat.
Science cannot be subjugated, but understanding it helps
to guide its direction or we must take the inevitable consequences
of our folly.
Ultimate Temptation, 150 cm x 150 cm, oil on canvas - 2001 Medusa’s Eyes, oil on canvas, 150 cm x 150 cm - 2007
Adán y Eva se comieron la manzana del conocimiento y fueron expulsados del paraíso y de una vida;
Adam & Eve ate the apple of knowledge & were banished from Heaven & a privileged life. The first 21 days
of an embryo’s development are the most precious as the cluster cells can specialize to become any organ
in the body. The temptation to use them for cultivating & replacing body parts may culminate in eventually
manufacturing artificial life forms which could resemble the myth of Frankenstein.
Scientists say what we can measure, we can eventually change. Evolution happened at a very slow
pace; Revolution is taking place at a speed beyond comprehension. Plants & animals are already being
redesigned. The role of each human gene is being scrutinized for possible improvements & these may
happen in our life time. But where will it stop?
As humans we have an acute fear of the unknown & dying . It is an attractive thought to believe that if
we must go, identical replicas could replace us. Since sheep & cows can already be replicated,
cloning humans is inevitable in the future. But each experiment comes with an ‘X’-factor, the possibility that
the clone could miss its objective & give us an unpleasant surprise .
about to abuse this blessing by designing super humans who can play “God”?

Forty percent of the genetic information is concentrated in the brain & is the most complicated & sophisticated
part of the genetic map. As the function of the brain’s different genes is understood, nano chips can be introduced
into the blood stream and trained, to have a specific effect & redesign the genetic function of a particular
gene. Malfunctions can be corrected, but also character traits can be induced to change a personality.
Genetic Scientists are taking a huge gamble hoping that the benefits of
this great experiment outweigh the dangers of possible unexpected side
effects. This strand of science is irreversible & will eventually effect every
cell of animal & plant life. Science is also taking a chance that all research &
development will have an honest purpose for the betterment of mankind
& not for its self-destruction for profit’s sake.
Jungle Tapestries
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
“On our first walk through the rainforest near Archidona,
the density of natural chaos fired my imagination & inspired
the series Jungle Tapestries.
We struggled in rubber boots through muddy tracks,
slipping & sliding over misty hills with our local guide,
Octavio. He pointed up towards the geometric canopy &
down along the narrow paths at details big & small. All was
silent, only broken by the chirping of birds too small to be
seen, hidden by the confusion of chiaroscuro. Luminous
butterflies fluttered by, settling on flowers & our T-shirts,
seeking salt from our sweating skin. The air was heavy,
humid, hot, sticky; the light breeze ruffled the upper canopy
wetting us below.
Colours from fresh lime-greens to crumpled browns,
fluttered, fell, disintegrating to enrich the forest floor. Spiky,
thorny tree trunks discouraged us strangers from resting
against their unwelcoming skin. Tiny frogs snuggled &
peeped from inside the ponds of rainwater caught within
the bromeliads. Ants, from red to black, busied themselves
with harvesting leaves to carry back to their earthy
palaces. Watchful lizards, fearless, still, rolled their eyes at the
clicking sound of Stephan’s camera. Flowers, fruits, seeds,
leaves fermenting, scented the air with a giddy perfume.
Dappled sparkling light wove its way through the collage
of entangled, hanging
liana and spangled us with diamonds. Rainwater drip, drip,
dripped crystal droplets from the sky to satisfy the bitter,
black, thirsty earth.
I sang under my breath & painted wild movements to
express the feeling of pleasure & joy.
The rainforest is the most concentrated example of life’s
cycle from birth to death & back to life, an intricate
eco-system. The air we breath, the water we drink, the fruits
we eat, the plants & animals we enjoy; the rainforest is their
original birth place. We have yet to learn all its subtle secrets
before it may all be lost & sacrificed at the altar of short-term
thinking.
Shroud at half-mast – sketch for Installation, 5 mts x 2 mts, mixed media - 2010
Manto a Media Asta y Daños Colaterales
asta.
metales demolidos, ventanas desbaratadas, edificios desintegrados
Shroud at Half Mast & Collateral Damage
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
“In my lifetime there has been more violence perpetrated
between nations & within borders to prove that
we learnt little from the 20th century; but with a difference.
Less respect is paid to the civilians who are caught
between warring factions in-spite of the rules that have been
laid down by the United Nations to prevent what we call
“Collateral Damage”, a euphemism to disguise the killing
& murder of innocent people.
The installation “Shroud at Half-Mast” is my homage to
these nameless, faceless, men, women & children.
In many cultures when a child is born it is washed
& wrapped in a white cloth.
A woman is married in a white gown to express innocence
& purity.
The dead are buried in a white shroud as a sign of peace
& tranquility.
When we want to cry “cease fire”, we hang out a white flag.
When a respected person dies, we lower out national flags
to half-mast.
As a symbolic gesture we should replace our national flags
for one day of the year with a white flag at half-mast, as an
expression of solidarity with the world where wars remain
common & peace remains a distant dream.
When the smoke & dust clears after a bomb explodes in
a city street,
in a kindergarten , in a music school, in a market place, in a
postman’s bag, we get a flash of an image on our TV screens.
Mangled metal, shattered windows, disintegrated buildings
& sounds of sirens.
But the details of human life which has been extinguished is
buried out of sight.
The bodies are quickly removed and what remains are the
small objects that define who they were. These five drawings
are reminders that each victim was a part of a causal
chain, a member of a family, a mother, a father, a daughter
or a son. They will never be forgotten by those who loved
them”.
Sinestesia
Synasthesia
“Nuestros sentidos no están bien definidos cuando
nacemos.
muchas ventajas y algunas desventajas.
y movimiento”.
Songlines I, 150 cm x 130 cm, oil on canvas - 2010
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
“When we are born our senses are not well defined. Seeing,
hearing, tasting feeling & smelling do not belong in their
own area in the brain but fuse & function in a close relationship
integrated by instinct.
As we mature, each sense finds it own place in the brain &
begins to function independently.
In some people this separation does not occur & the
senses remain interdependent. This phenomena is called
synaesthesia; due to this, stimulation in one sense triggers
stimulation in another.
I have acute synaesthesia, I am flooded with colour.
My perception of language, written & heard, music,
feelings, thoughts, places & people arouse a colour spectrum
in my awareness. The colours remain long after the
stimulation itself disappears. This has many advantages &
some disadvantages. There are things I cannot learn, like
languages.
An intense conversation with a friend cannot be recalled
afterwards.
I am allergic to noises, sound of traffic, alarms, disco beats.
There have been other artists, writers, poets & composers
known to have had synaesthesia; it seems to enhance one’s
creative abilities.
Today universities have departments studying the phenomenon.
I grew up struggling against it when I could not explain it
to others.
For many years I have tried to express the sensation of
synaesthesia through my work; today I cannot imagine
living or painting without it.
The paintings in this series capture some of the stream-like
beauty of it.
Most of my pictures are executed against the background of
classical music which fills my imagination with colour &
movement.”
plim, plom;
encontramos”.
A Burnt-out Dream
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
„In the middle of the Archidona forest, near the bank
of a river, a house burnt down one November night
by accident & no one was hurt.
The fire was a fierce inferno out of Dante’s purgatory.
When it was all over, the house had been reduced
to chaos.
The walls had collapsed & crumbled.
The grey tin roof had split, twisted & curled.
The wooden beams were blackened & charcoaled.
Glass had melted, welded & formed new shapes.
Nails & hinges had popped out far & wide.
Ceramics had splintered into facets of colorful sculptures.
Books had fragmented, words had become whispers.
Wires & cables had woven new patterns.
Scattered in between were household objects barely
recognizable.
Today the forest is reclaiming its rights.
The ruin is being taken over by plants, butterflies,
crickets & bees.
Snakes curl up, sleeping under warm rusting metal.
The rain drips through cracks & holes, splish, splosh, splish
splosh, forming pools, reflecting the blue sky & the grey
white clouds.
Buzzards & birds glide & circle high above.
The sun appears & disappears, lighting the ruin
in sharp contrasts of contradictions.
Filling it with a poignant beauty of what had once been
a man’s dream.
Fuerzas de la Naturaleza
Forces of Nature
Tenemos mareas altas y mareas bajas.
Cuando la tierra tiembla, se estremece, se quema, se inunda;
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
“The inner human world closely resembles the outer
natural world.
We are part of the whole cycle of cosmic forces.
We have high tides & low tides.
We are volatile like volcanoes, exploding without any
warning.
We rise & are elated by the golden energy of the sun.
We celebrate when the moon is new & when it is full.
We dance to the rhythms of the breeze & sing to the stars
in the midnight sky.
We aspire to reach for mountain tops & do the impossible.
We meditate the tranquility of the lakes & their hidden
secrets.
We love like the thunder of the storm.
We shed tears like the drops of rain.
The beauty that surrounds us permeates into the depth
of our souls & inspires us to be creative.
Write poetry. Paint pictures. Carve stones
and play music to celebrate our joy for life.
When the earth quakes, trembles, burns, floods,
When the wind twists & turns, blindly crushing what lies
in its path,
we kneel to our gods and know that we are small
against the forces of nature ”.
20th Century Legacy
En palabras de la artista : / In the words of the artist :
It was hard to believe that we were nearing the end of the
20th Century and yet Man’s inhumanity to Man continued
unchanged. This collection of 22 handmade posters are
facets of a single issue of basic human rights I have called
20th Century Legacy. Each poster is in the shape of giant
postage stamps. Stamps since their invention have carried
messages across the world and I have used this format to ask
questions that effect our lives. Reality is changing so fast,
it is hard to stop and try to ascertain whether the change
is for the long term good of mankind. There is a price tag
attached to our electronic, computerized, cybernetic
lifestyle. It seems practical to want to asses its real cost. We
cannot turn the clock back but we can readjust its speed and
direction. It is everyman’s right to live with hope, in freedom,
with justice, without fear. This is not a luxury but a
necessity.
The question remains: is the world round or is it flat?
Globalization, information
highways, satellite communication, around-the-clocktrading,
insists that the world is round. But considering
the human situation, environment degradation, ecological
disasters, modern day slavery and all the wars, we wish
the world were flat so that we would not have to face all
these nightmares. Science tells us reality is a causal chain.
Therefore, one man’s freedom is linked to the next man’s.
With every door we lock, with every wall we build, with
every frontier we wrap in barbed wire, we shut ourselves in,
just as much as we shut the world out, in danger of becoming
prisoners in our own skin.
So what are we hoping to give to the future generations.
A better world or an apocalypse? A question each of us
needs to ask.
The British philosopher Isaac Berlin said at the end of his
life in 1999:
“You cannot change human nature, but it is part of human
nature to keep on trying.”
