The ancient Maya had a fascination with cycles and time, among their
infinite accomplishments, they invented a calendar of remarkable accuracy
and complexity, the Mayan calendar is actually a set of three interlocking
calendars and almanacs; the Tzolkin or divine calendar, the Haab or solar
calendar, and the Long Count.
The Haab is a 365 day solar calendar divided in 19 months; 18 Winals or 20-
day periods and the Uayeb which is a 5-day month. The Haab is
represented in 19 Mayan glyphs located on the outer ring of the calendar.
Each glyph represents a personality associated with the month.

Los Mayas tenían una fascinación por los ciclos y el tiempo, dentro de su
infinidad de logros inventaron una calendario de gran complejidad, el
Calendario Maya es en realidad una serie de tres calendarios que se
ensamblan entre sí; el Tzolkin o calendario divino, el Haab ó calendario
solar, y el de cuenta larga.
El Haab es un calendario de 365 días divididos en 19 meses; 18 winals ó
periodos de 20 días, y el desafortunado Uayeb ó mes de 5 días. El Haab está
representado a través de 19 glifos localizados en el círculo exterior del
calendario Maya. Cada glifo representa la personalidad asociada con el
mes de nacimiento.

Stela 11 was found in the most ancient Mayan site named
Kaminaljuyú, meaning hill of the dead, it depicts one of the oldest
deities in Mayan history, a figure referred to as the Principal Bird
Deity, also known as “Vucub-Caquix” or Seven Macaw, the piece
depicts a bird demon who appears at a dark moment in the creation
of the world. The Principal Bird Deity arrogantly claims the sun and
the moon for himself in the twilight world between the former
creation and the present one. He holds a special jewel in his
feathers which has been associated with a serpent, and he is
regarded as resplendent an evil. Seven Macaw is distinguished
among other deities for his figure, the serpent wing and head, he is
seen as a supernatural from the underworld, an overseer of
significant events in both our world and the underworld. Seven
Macaw brings darkness to the world of flowers, he is danger in a
world that would be more beautiful without him, he represents
chaos and wilderness. He is also related as father of Zipacna, an
underworld demon deity and Cabrakan, the earthquake God.
Estela 11 se encuentra en el sitio Maya más antiguo de todos llamado
Kaminaljuyú, que significa la colina del muerto, representa una de las
deidades más antiguas de la historia Maya, una figura a la que se
refiere como el Ave Principal Descendente, Vucub-Caquix ó Siete
Guacamayo, la pieza representa un demonio ave que aparece en un
momento oscuro de la creación del mundo. La historia cuenta que el
Ave Principal Descendente arrogantemente reclama al sol y a la luna
para él mismo durante la convergencia de la creación del viejo mundo
y del presente. Entre sus alas lleva una joya a la que se le ha hecho la
referencia de una serpiente, el personaje es visto como
resplandeciente y lleno de maldad a la vez. Siete Guacamayo es
distinguido entre otras deidades por su figura, su ala serpenteada y su
cabeza, es percibido como sobrenatural, proveniente del inframundo,
un capataz de eventos significantes en este mundo y en el
inframundo. Siete Guacamayo trae oscuridad a un mundo de flores, es
peligro en un mundo que sería más hermoso sin él, representa caos y
salvajismo. Se relaciona como el padre de Zipacna, una deidad del
inframundo y Cabrakan, el Dios del terremoto.

Maya art is not always as simple as it might seem, as their pieces involve narrative as well, the ballgame on
Monument 171 shows two players in action with knees on the floor and a large ball between them, the game
portrays a duality, day and night, life and dead, light and darkness. The ball was a representation of the sun, the
phases of the game represent the solar positions in the sky.

Kohunlich derives from the English word Cohoon Ridge,
for the numerous cohoon palms common in the area,
this site is best known for its Temple of the Masks built
around 500 A.D. The impressive stucco masks made up
the lower side panels of the pyramid, each sculpted
mask measures about 6-8 feet high and still show
remnants of their original color. The magnificent threedimensional
masks were positioned to look towards the
sunset and represent the rulers of Kohunlich in the form
of the Mayan Sun God Kinich Ahau, one of the most
important Mayan deities. Their surroundings are filled
with symbolic representations of Mayan glyphs.
Kohunlich se deriva de la palabra inglesa Cohoon Ridge,
haciendo referencia las palmas cocoteras comunes de la
región, este sitio es mayormente reconocido por el
Templo de los Mascarones construido alrededor del año
500 A.C. Las impresionantes máscaras de estuco
conforman los paneles inferiores de la pirámide, cada
mascaron esculpido tiene una medida de
aproximadamente 2 metros y medio de altura y aún
muestran remanentes de su color original. Las magníficas
mascaras tridimensionales fueron posicionadas para miras
hacia el atardecer, y representan a los gobernantes de
Kohunlich en la forma del Dios Maya del Sol Kinich Ahau,
una de la más importantes deidades de la cultura Maya.

For the Mayan the Imperial Jade stone was more valuable
than gold, they held the monopoly of jade and it was used by
all their leaders and elite. The extreme hardness of this
precious stone allows it to remain unchangeable in time,
reason why Jade was associated with eternity and
immortality.
In occasions it took years, even generations to work the
stone with great detail, each one was dedicated to their
deities. Its characteristic green color was associated with life,
fertility and power. Nobles and royals were buried with
multiple accessories and masks made out of Jade and a piece
of the stone in their mouth to ensure their way to heaven,
along with their hierarchy recognized even after death. The
Mayan civilization linked jade with the origin of the universe,
according to their mythology, three jade stones were placed
during the foundation of the world.
Para los Mayas la Piedra Imperial de Jade era más valiosa que el
oro, sostenían un monopolio por el jade que era utilizado por
sus gobernantes y elite. El jade es una piedra de extrema
dureza lo que permite que su forma no cambie a través del
tiempo, razón por la cual es asociada con la vida eterna y la
inmortalidad.
En ocasiones tomaba años, incluso generaciones, trabajar una
pieza de jade a gran detalle, cada una dedicada a sus deidades.
El color verde característico del jade representaba la vida,
fertilidad y poder. La realeza era sepultada con múltiples
accesorios tallados en jade para reconocer su jerarquía después
de la muerte, también se colocaba una pieza dentro de la boca
para asegurar su llegada al más allá. La civilización Maya
consideraba que había una conexión entre el jade y el origen del
universo, de acuerdo a la mitología Maya, tres piedras de jade
fueron colocadas como cimiento en la creación del mundo.

To the Maya the concepts of death and sacrifice were
spiritually linked to the concepts of creation and
rebirth.
El Monumento 154 muestra la captura de Xooy primer
pedernal b’ahh’tok’, tercer guerrero apresado y cautivo
presentado ante el Octavo gobernante de Yaxchilán,
Itzamnaaj B’alam III.
Para los Mayas los conceptos de muerte y sacrificio se
asociaban de manera espiritual con los conceptos de
creación y reencarnación.

The Mayan noble class was wealthy and powerful,
subdivided in two groups, the ahkinoob filled the
priesthood, and the almehenob became governors,
rulers, important military leaders or scribes. Nobles
were seen as intermediaries between Gods and men.
Nobles considered bloodletting an honor, they regularly
offered their blood to the gods, by puncturing their ears,
tongues and genitals with thorns or stingray spines.
La clase Noble Maya estaba rodeada por riqueza y poder,
subdividida en dos grupos, los ahkinoob formaban el
clero, y los almehenob se convertían en gobernantes,
soberanos, e importantes lideres militares o escribas. La
nobleza era percibida como intermediarios entre los
Dioses y el hombre. Para los nobles ofrendar su sangre era
un honor, perforaban sus orejas, lenguas, y genitales con
regularidad utilizando púas y espinas de mantarraya, su
sangre era empleada como ofrenda a los Dioses.

Panel 4 represents the partial depiction of Muyaal Hix
Chaak, ruler of Pomona, and priest Ti'sak hu’n, in a
three-day ceremony celebrating the end of the k’atun,
a 7,200 day-cycle according to the Mayan calendar. An
offering of incense is being presented to a serpent
spirit from the waters of the underworld.
Panel 4 representa parcialmente a Muyaal Hix Chaak,
gobernante de Pomoná, y al sacerdote Tj’sak hu’n, en una
ceremonia de tres días celebrando el final de un k’atun, un
ciclo de 7,200 días de acuerdo al Calendario Maya. Una

Lintel 24 from the Mayan city of Yaxchilán depicts a
bloodletting ritual among ruler Shield Jaguar II, holding
a torch while his wife Lady Xoc; one of the most
prominent and politically powerful women in the Maya
civilization, pulls a rope studded with obsidian shards
through her tongue in order to conjure the vision
serpent creature.
El dintel 24 de la Ciudad Maya de Yaxchilán representa un
ritual de ofrenda de sangre entre el gobernante Escudo
Jaguar II, que sostiene una antorcha mientras que su
esposa Xoc; una de las mujeres más destacadas en poder y

Lady Xoc, richly dressed, confronting the vision of an
ancient warrior emerging from the mouth of serpent
deity K’awiil while he threatens her with a spear. She
holds a receiving position. God Kawill is associated with
maize and sovereign dynasties.
El dintel 25 de la Ciudad Maya de Yaxchilán representa a la
Señora Xoc, ricamente vestida, confrontando la visión de
un poderoso guerrero que emerge del hocico de la deidad

K’inich Janaab Pakal I also known as Pacal, Pacal the Great, 8 Ahau
and Sun Shield, king of the Mayan City of Palenque. Pakal was buried
in jade finery including a beautiful death mask, and placed over
Pakal's tomb was a massive sarcophagus stone, laboriously carved
with an image of Pakal himself being reborn as a god. Pakal's
sarcophagus and its stone top are among the great all-time
archeological discoveries in history. Its magnificent artistic carving
on the top of the sarcophagus lid is one of the masterpieces of
Mayan art. Pakal is on his back, wearing his jewels, headdress, and
skirt. Pakal is shown in the center of the cosmos, being reborn into
eternal life. He has become one with the god Unen-K'awill, who was
associated with maize, fertility, and abundance. He is emerging
from a maize seed held by the so-called Earth Monster whose
enormous teeth are clearly shown. Pakal is emerging along with the
cosmic tree, visible behind him. The tree will carry him to the sky,
where the god Itzamnaaj, the Sky Dragon, is awaiting him in the
form of a bird and two serpent heads on either side. This
masterpiece has been crucial in the understanding of how the Maya
perceived death and rebirth.
K’inich Janaab Pakal I también conocido como Pacal, Pacal el Grande,
8 Ahau, Sol Escudo, rey de la Ciudad Maya de Palenque. Pakal fue
sepultado con fina joyería y máscara, sobre su tumba un
impresionante sarcófago laboriosamente tallado con la imagen del
mismo Pakal renaciendo en un Dios. El sarcófago de Pakal es uno de
los más grandes descubrimientos de la arqueología. El artístico
labrado sobre la cara principal de su sarcófago es una de las obras
maestras del arte Maya. Pakal está sobre su espalda, portando su
joyas, tocado y falda real. Pakal se muestra en el centro del cosmos,
renaciendo en la ida eterna. Se ha unificado con el Dios Unen-Kawiil,
asociado con el maíz, la fertilidad, y la abundancia. Emerge de una
semilla de maíz llamada el Monstruo de la Tierra cuyos grandes
dientes se pueden apreciar. Pakal emerge junto con el árbol cósmico,
visible detrás de él. El árbol lo llevará hasta el cielo, donde el Dios
Itzamnaaj, el Dragón del Cielo, lo espera en forma de un ave con dos
cabezas de serpiente. Esta obra de arte ha sido crucial en el
descubrimiento de la percepción de los Mayas en cuanto a la muerta y
al renacimiento.

About the Artist!
Sobre el Artista

Kahatsa’ is developed by Talleres Artefacto, a visual and
plastic arts company created and managed by renown
architect and artist
Jorge C. Martell Correa
Native of Orizaba, Veracruz, born in the fall of the 45’,
ventured during his early childhood into the artistic
technique of watercolor, influenced and guided by
renowned artists Siqueiros, Alvaro Carrillo Gil and Master
Castro Pacheco, he achieved prominently at the age of 15
the first place on a national competition. Martell studied at
the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (U.N.A.M.)
graduating with a degree in architecture, professing a
grand development within the fields of design and
architectural projection, with masterworks throughout the
country, in addition to being professor of design at several
universities of Mexico. In 1994 he creates a revolutionary
new painting technique, giving birth to the pattern of the
International Gamma Series, with the theme “Hamaca”
from his unique collection he participates in the 1998
International Firenze contest, acquiring the 4th place
which would place him for exhibition in the 1999 Biennale
Internazionale di Firenze taking place in Florence, Italy,
with reference of his masterpiece “Reflexiones II” and his
participation in collective and solo expositions throughout
Cancun, Mexico City, Miami and Italy.
Martell has attained great recognition and appreciation
due to the thematic richness of his work, described as an
abstraction of figurative art, providing a visual and haptical
pleasure which accomplishes a tribute to the joy of life and
spirit.
During years 2013 through 2018, Martell conforms part of
the creators team for the first Mayan theme park in the
City of Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico; falling deeper in
love with the magic world of the Maya, the immense
wisdom, artistic gifts and spirituality of each masterpiece.
Given his profound respect and admiration for the ancient
Mayan artists, in 2018 Martell baptizes his most recent
project as Kahatsa’, limited edition series of Mayan art
replicas presented in three collections: Identity, Tribute
and Awake Collections, which we hope for you to enjoy.
Kahatsa’ es un proyecto que nace y se lleva a cabo a través
de Talleres Artefacto, compañía de artes plásticas creada y
dirigida por el reconocido arquitecto y artista Jorge C.
Martell Correa.
Originario de Orizaba, Veracruz en el Otoño del 45, desde su
niñez, incursiona en la acuarela bajo la influencia de
Siqueiros, Álvaro Carrillo Gil y el maestro Castro Pacheco,
ganado un primer concurso a nivel nacional a los 15 años de
edad. Cursa la carrera de Arquitecto en la UNAM (63-68) y
ejerce un amplio desarrollo en el campo del diseño y el
proyecto arquitectónico con obras en la República Mexicana,
además de ser profesor de Diseño en varias Universidades
del país. En el 94, crea una nueva y revolucionaria técnica
pictórica dando pauta al nacimiento y creación de la
“Colección Gamma Internacional”, concursando en el 98 con
“HAMACA” en el premio Firenze, obteniendo un cuarto lugar
y lo ubica en el 99 en la exposición de la BIENAL
INTERNACIONAL DE FLORENCIA en Italia con mención de la
obra “Reflexiones II”.
Con su participación en exposiciones colectivas e individuales
en Cancún, México D.F. Miami e Italia, Martell ha tenido
grandes reconocimientos debido a la riqueza temática de su
obra, calificada como una abstracción del arte figurativo,
que regala un placer óptico y áptico, logrando un homenaje
a la alegría de vivir y un renacimiento de espíritu.
Durante los años 2013 a 2018, Martell participa en la creación
y ambientación del primer parque temático maya en la
ciudad de Cancún, Quintana Roo, México; profundizando y
enamorándose más del mágico mundo de la Cultura Maya,
apreciando la inmensidad de conocimiento, espiritualidad y
dotes artísticos de sus creadores en cada una de las
representaciones.
Dado el profundo respeto y admiración a los antiguos
artistas mayas, Martell crea en 2018, su más reciente
proyecto bautizado como Kahatsa´, un conjunto de piezas
limitadas y seriadas representando réplicas del Arte Maya
