I painted the back of Insecticon to

look like decaying leaves, as I thought

that decaying leaves give the most

intresting patters and colours.

This meant that if the creature was

under threat it could hide and

camouflage into the forest as no

predator would be interested in dying

leaves

I made the spine darker and added

shades of brown green and yellow. I

copied the various patterns and

textures of decying leaves to give a

more realistic effect.

Painting process of the back

The back is one of the

main features on the

charater and was the

most time consuming.

I used Mudbox to paint

this rather than

Substance painter

because I couldn't

acess the college

computers and also my

home computer could

not handle Substance

Painter

I used several different

stamps, stencils and

airbrushed colours to

blend the whole back

togethrer

I wanted to use

the bulges in the

head to mimic the

natural way

decaying leaves

buckle

Green base

lighten main areas

add colour,

shading

and some

texture

and finally I added

the thorns to the

front and back

Then add the finer

details like mud

When I designed the legs I wanted them to be another method of

defence. I also wanted to keep with the plant theme, so I looked at how

plants defend themselves and tried sculpting various thorns onto the

legs. In the end I decided rose thorns looked the best.

Next I added muscles to the legs. I looked at the muscles on body

builders. I thought the way their legs looked during competitions

was almost extraterrestrial.

This gave the model more definition and a stronger look.

I then removed blemishes and

blended the hand onto the arm. I

also had to bring down the polycount

because it was too high.

The design was based on pink

lilies and orchids.

These are really beautiful and

flamboyant flowers that catch the

eye. I loved its soft pinks with hits

of yellows and darker speckles

which I have incoprated into the

design.

I also took inspiration from the

Orchrid Praying Mantis that also

mimics orchids as a form of

camouflage

I mainly contoured

along the sculpted

features that were

already there and

tried to include as

much flower elements

as possible.

This is how the character looks while

attracting prey,

As you can see this position mimics a lilies

I wanted the face to have a

more insect alien look. I

think adding the padipal

and fangs helped with this.

I took inspiration from

several animals,example

large eyes on deers, the

fangs and pedipal on

spiders and I painted it to

mimic orchid flowers

I based my design on

the "face feelers or

pinchers" from the

pedipalp on spiders

(these are the front

two legs used to feel

and hold food)

I painted these pink

but in the same style

as tarantula legs

I sculpted these in Zbrush doing a general rough shape.

I then started using orbs to get a more exact shape.

After this I defined the shape and lowered the poly count.

I then painted them with a hair texture. But i didnt think it

fit with the aesthic so

I then changed the colours to a lighter pink to fit better

with the pallet

I WANTED TO EMPHASIZE THAT THE CREATURE WAS IN AN

EMBRYONIC STATE SO I ADDED AN ADDITIONAL SACK OVER

TO MIMIMIC AN EMBRYO SACK

THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MADE FROM GEL 10 BUT THIS

SILICONE DRIES CLOUDY. I FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO GET A

THIN ENOUGH LAYER FOR IT TO DRY CLEAR BUT A THICK

ENOUGH LAYER TO BE DURABLE ENOUGH TO STRETCH

OVER THE ENTIRE SCULPT.

INSTEAD I USED CONDOMS. THEY WORKED PERFECTLY

WELL.

ADDING VEINS WAS TRICKY AS I LEARNED GEL 10 WILL NOT

CURE ON CONDOMS BECAUSE OF ITS MATERIAL MAKE UP.

GLUES CAN PEEL AND FLAKE SO TO ADD VEINS I HAD TO

SOAK THREAD IN WATER DILUTED PVA GLUE AND GENTLY

APPLY IT WITH A TWEEZERS AND METAL RODS.

THE CONDOM ALSO GOES CLOUDY OVER TIME BUT ADDING

A LAYER OF DISH SOAP REMOVES THE WHITE LOOK.

NORMAL

BLOWN UP

FILLED WITH WATER

STRETCHED

THIS IS FOUR DIFFRENT COCOOOS DISPLAYED DIFFRENTLY BUT ALL USING A CONDOMN AS

THE EMBROYTIC SACK

THIS IS THE FINAL PRODUCT OF THE MAIN COCOON
