on a local and national basis. Since
hurricane Irma, the infrastructure and
marinas are still not fully restored, but
we hope that the marinas in Marigot and
Oyster Pond will soon be open, as well as
training centers for nautical professions.

Facile et accessible à tous, le stand-up paddle est excellent pour les abdos et les fessiers.
Ce sport surpasse toutes les salles de sport, en douceur, sans s’ennuyer et en
pleine nature. Depuis la plage de la Baie Orientale, avec le club Wind Adventures, vous
pourrez découvrir la côte et Green Cay. Le club propose aussi de vous emmener en
bateau jusqu’à Tintamare, pour un retour en paddle dans le sens du vent et de la mer.
Stand-up paddle is easy and accessible to everyone. Excellent for those abs and buttocks,
it outdoes any gym. It’s gentle exercise that you’ll enjoy without getting bored, plus
you’re in the middle of nature. Starting on the beach in Orient Bay, Wind Adventures will
take you on an exploration of the coast and Green Cay. The club also offers to take you by
boat to Tintamare for a return paddling, with the wind and the sea behind you.

Kite surf
A l’inverse de ce que l’on imagine parfois,
Le kite surf est un sport où l’on se fait très
vite plaisir et qui ne demande ni une forme
olympique ni des biceps d’acier. D’ailleurs,
les filles progressent souvent plus rapidement
que les garçons, tout simplement
parce qu’elles opposent moins de résistance
à la traction de la voile.
Les équipements modernes ont mis l’accent
sur la sécurité et l’idéal est bien sûr de
prendre quelques cours pour maîtriser la
technique. Les kite surfeurs de Saint-Martin
se retrouvent sur la baie de Cul-de-Sac

(SXM Kiteschool) et sur la baie Orientale
(Wind Adventures). Le kite surf est interdit
sur la baie du Galion, par arrêté préfectoral.
In contrast to what one might think, kite
surfing is a sport that can be learned very
quickly and does not require an Olympic
physique or biceps made of steel. Proof of
this is that girls often make faster progress
than boys, simply because they offer less
resistance to the traction of the sail.
Modern equipment puts an accent on
safety, and it is always best to take a few
lessons to master the technique. Kite surfers
in Saint Martin gather on Cul de Sac
Bay (SXM Kiteschool), and at Orient Bay
(Wind Adventures). Kite surf is forbidden
in Galion Bay, by order of the Prefecture.

depuis un bateau - un dinghy équipé d’un

des courbes de plus en plus serrées, passer

Puis vient le kitefoil pour les kitesurfeurs
déjà initiés. Les sensations de vitesse, de
vol et de liberté sont incroyables. Remonter
au vent devient très simple, même avec
peu de vent. La progression est rapide : environ
2 heures pour être autonome.

Wing foil = aile + foil. L’aile, gonflable
et légère, est équipée de poignées et
n’est pas liée à la planche. Comme la
voile du kite surf, elle génère la propulsion
nécessaire au mouvement du foil,
qui décolle hors de l’eau. L’aile peut
être utilisée avec un paddle, mais aussi
à terre, avec un skateboard, des patins
à roulettes et même un snowboard.
Sport hybride entre le kite surf et la
planche à voile, le wing foil a l’avantage
d’être facile à transporter et à préparer.

Wing foil = wing + foil. The wing, inflatable
and light, is equipped with handles
and not attached to the board.
Like the sail used for kitesurfing, the
wing generates enough propulsion to
propel the foil, which takes off above
the water. The wing can also be used
with a paddleboard, as well as on
land with a skateboard, roller blades,
or even a snowboard. A hybrid sport
between kitesurfing and windsurfing,
the advantage is that it’s easy
to transport and to set up. At Orient
Bay, Wind Adventures offers classes
and rents wing foils, as does the SXM
Kiteschool, close to the embarcadero
for Pinel in Cul-de-Sac.

On peut louer un jet-ski pour trente minutes

Saint-Martin étant divisée entre la France et les Pays-Bas, les formalités sont différentes
d’un côté de l’île et de l’autre. Elles doivent être effectuées, à l’entrée comme au départ.
Sur la partie française

Afin d’accélérer la procédure, il est possible de pré-enregistrer le bateau et les passagers sur
le site de la marina Fort Louis (marinafortlouis.com) pour les clients de la marina ou le site du
port de Galisbay (portdemarigot.com) pour les bateaux au mouillage. Mais il est toujours nécessaire
de se déplacer physiquement pour terminer le processus, et possible de le faire en
dinghy. Présenter passeports, papiers originaux du bateau et clearance du port précédent.
Il est également possible de faire une clearance chez ces deux shipchandlers :
• Island Water World Marigot (carrefour du cimetière)
• L’Île Marine (chenal de Sandy Ground)
As the island of Saint Martin is half-French and half-Dutch, immigration procedures are
different on each side of the island. Paperwork must be done upon arrival and departure.
On The French Side
In order to accelerate the process, it is possible to pre-register the boat and passengers on
the Marina Fort Louis website (marinafortlouis.com) for clients of the marina, or the website
for the Port de Galisbay (portdemarigot.com) for boats at moorings. But it is always necessary
to show up in person to complete the process, and it is possible to do so by dinghy. You
must present all passports, the original papers for the boat, and clearance from the last port.
It is also possible to handle port clearance at these two ship chandlers:
• Island Water World Marigot (Cemetery roundabout)
• L’Ile Marine (Sandy Ground, entrance to the lagoon)

Les redevances de port et de douane s’élèvent
respectivement à 5$ et 2$ pour les bateaux
jusqu’à 99 tonneaux, 10$ et 5$ de 100 à 499 tonneaux
, 20$ et 9$ au-delà de 500 tonneaux. Une
redevance est exigée pour les bateaux restant
au mouillage (voir tarifs page 48). La redevance
pour le pont est payable à la sortie du lagon
(voir tarifs page 52).

Simpson Bay
All vessels entering Simpson Bay and the Simpson
Bay Lagoon are by law required to clear in at
the Lagoon Authority Collection Office and at the
Immigration Office, situated in the Police Station,
west of the Simpson Bay Bridge, immediately after
arrival. The harbour and custom fees each are
$5 and $2 for boats up to 99 gross tons, $10 and
$5 for boats of 100 to 499 gross tons, $20 and $9
for boats of more than 500 gross tons. A fee is asked
for boats staying at anchor (see rates page
48). The bridge fees are payable on clearing out
from the lagoon (see rates page 52).

Les ponts / Drawbridges
L’entrée dans le lagon de Simpson Bay
est possible grâce à deux ponts levants,
l’un à Sandy Ground (partie française),
gratuit ; l’autre à Simpson Bay (partie hollandaise),
payant (voir tarifs page 52). Le
«Causeway», Un troisième pont, tournant,
est situé dans le lagon entre les deux
ponts levants (voir détails page 54).
Un chenal de 2,50 mètres de profondeur
existe entre la partie française et la partie
hollandaise du lagon. Il est impératif de naviguer
dans ce chenal avec la plus grande
prudence. Les balises ne sont pas toutes
installées entre le pont de Sandy Ground
et le Causeway, mais les épaves ont normalement
toutes été retirées. Le chenal
est en revanche balisé entre le Causeway
et le pont de Simpson Bay.

Entry to the Simpson Bay Lagoon is possible

the lagoon between the two lift bridges (see

Causeway and Simpson Bay Bridge are there.

The 760 meter bridge that was built in 2013 between the Juliana
Airport and the Bellevue border, on the Dutch side, has reduced
the traffic jams along Simpson Bay. A swing bridge was

CROSS Antilles-Guyane, à Fort-de-France, et relayé localement sur le canal 16, vers la
Société nationale de sauvetage en mer (SNSM) de la partie française et/ou la SNSM de
Saint-Barth, selon les cas et la position du bateau.
Par téléphone, composer le 196 pour joindre le CROSS.
La SNSM de Saint-Martin répond aussi au (05 90) 06 90 76 75 00, mais il est préférable
de la contacter par le canal VHF 16. Elle possède un semi-rigide rapide et une vedette.
La SNSM de Saint-Barth dispose d’une vedette.

in Fort-de-France. The call will be relayed locally on channel 16, towards the SNSM –

Getting around the island

If you don’t have a rental car, you can always
call a taxi or use a public minibus. The official
taxi rates are posted based on the distance
between two points. The attached chart indicates
the price for one or two passengers in
euros/dollars. Caution : these rates are subject
to change. The rates go up as of a third
passenger, and increase between midnight
and 6am. The public minibuses are not expensive
—just two or three euros— and run
frequently but do not have fixed stops or
schedule. All you have to do is flag one down
and they will stop to pick you up.

regatta celebrates its 41st edition. It is open
to all kinds of sailboats that come from 35
different countries around the world.
Saint Barths Bucket Regatta: March 16-19,
2023. A great nautical spectacle performed
by a fleet of more than 30 magnificent
sailboats over 100 feet in length.
Les Voiles de Saint-Barth: April 16-22,
2023. More than 70 boats including some
of the best in the world, and over 1000 sailors,
are expected to participate.
New Year’s Eve Regatta: December 31, 2022. An
informal parade of sailboats around the island

La Baie de Marigot
C’est le mouillage obligé de tous les bateaux
de passage, et le seul endroit du côté français
de l’île où il est possible de faire les formalités
d’immigration (avec la marina d’Anse Marcel), à
l’arrivée comme au départ (voir page 40). Les
plaisanciers ont le choix entre le mouillage et
les pontons de la Marina Fort Louis. Les dinghies
peuvent être amarrés sur le quai du front
de mer, entre la gare maritime et le marché. Le
mouillage est payant (voir tarifs page 46).
À deux pas du centre ville, le site est idéal pour
les approvisionnements et les pleins d’eau et
de carburants (à la marina Fort Louis). Il faut
cinq minutes en canot, par le chenal d’entrée
du lagon, pour se rendre dans les chantiers de
Sandy Ground et leurs abords, où sont regroupés
un grand nombre de professionnels du
nautisme très qualifiés. La marina Port la Royale
est à présent fermée et sa reconstruction est
en cours. La baie de Marigot, en revanche, reste
bien protégée, sauf par houle de nord.

Always well protected, except in case of a north
swell, the anchorage in Marigot is obligatory
for all boats visiting the island and the only
place on the French side (with Anse Marcel marina)
to take care of the clearance upon arrival
and leaving (see page 40). Boats can anchor in
the bay or on the pontoons at Marina Fort Louis.
Dinghies can be tied up along the waterfront
dock, between the sea terminal and the market.
A fee is collected for boats at anchorage (see
rates page 46). Located just a few steps from
the center of the city, Marigot Bay is the perfect
place to shop for provisions or fill up with water
and fuel (at marina Fort Louis). It takes just five
minutes by dinghy to get to the boatyards of
Sandy Ground, which are located in close proximity
to a large number of nautical and qualified
professionals. Marina Port la Royale is still
closed, but its renovation is going on. Marigot
Bay, on the other hand, remains well protected,
except for strong northern swells.

Parfaitement abritée de toutes les conditions
de houle, la Marina Fort Louis est située
au centre ville de Marigot. Son accès direct
sur la mer, sans dépendre d’un pont, est un
«plus» indéniable. Contacter la capitainerie
15 mn avant l’arrivée du bateau (VHF 16 ou
05 90 77 31 26 et 06 90 66 05 32). On réserve
sa place à quai sur le site de la marina ou
par téléphone. En cas d’arrivée en dehors
des horaires d’ouverture, les bateaux sont
priés de se mettre à quai à l’emplacement
de leur choix et de s’inscrire dès l’ouverture
de la capitainerie. Le garde de permanence
ouvrira le portail à l’équipage. La marina dispose
d’une station de fuel. Les quais sont
équipés d’eau et certains quais d’électricité
(220/380 volts – 100 ampères). Jusqu’à 200
000 litres de carburant peuvent être livrés
à quai, dans un délai de 4 heures. Le personnel
de la marina est habilité à effectuer
les «clearances» pour les bateaux qui le désirent
(lire page 40). Une connexion internet
par Wifi et un point internet à la capitainerie
sont à la disposition des plaisanciers.
Perfectly sheltered from all swells, Marina
Fort Louis is located in the center of Marigot.
Its direct access from the sea, without the
impediment of a bridge, is an undeniable
plus. Captains are requested to contact the
marina office 15 minutes before arrival on
VHF channel 16 (or by telephone: 05 90 77
31 26 or 06 90 66 05 32). A place at the dock
can be reserved on the marina’s website or
by telephone. In case of arrival outside of
opening hours, boats are asked to anchor
at the berth of their choice, and complete
formalities when the office opens. A fulltime
security guard can open the gate for
the crew. The marina has a fuel pump, and
the docks are equipped with water, and
some also have electricity (220/380 volts
– 100 amps). Up to 200,000 liters of fuel
can be delivered to the dock, within a delay
of four hours. The marina staff is able to
handle in and out clearances for boats that
request such service (read page 40). Wi-Fi
and an Internet connection are available for
recreational boaters at the port office.

Friar’s Bay
Assez peu fréquenté, Friar’s Bay est un mouillage agréable et très calme, et une
escale idéale pour déjeuner tranquillement ou se baigner, à quelques minutes de
Marigot. Il est préférable de mouiller à l’est de la baie pour une meilleure protection.
Le nord de la côte possède un joli site de plongée en apnée. Sur la plage,
il est possible de déjeuner et de louer des chaises longues. Le départ du sentier
d’accès à Happy Bay se trouve à l’extrémité nord de la plage.
Never very crowded, Friar’s Bay is a peaceful spot to stop for a quiet lunch or enjoy
a swim, just a few minutes from Marigot. It is advisable to anchor on the east side
of the bay, which is more protected. The north side of the coast is a pretty spot for
snorkeling. You can rent beach chairs and have lunch at the restaurant. The beginning
of the access path to Happy Bay is found at the far north end of the beach.

Ce mouillage peu fréquenté devient vite inconfortable dès que le vent ou la houle
y entre, et il est alors préférable de mouiller sous la pointe au sud du mouillage.
Il n’empêche que la plage, appréciée des naturistes, est belle et souvent déserte.
L’hôtel abandonné sur les hauteurs du site a été victime du cyclone Luis en 1995,
puis du cyclone Irma, et n’a pour le moment pas rouvert.
The mooring spot is not used very often as it becomes quite uncomfortable as
soon as there are sea swells, and it is often better to anchor south of the south
foreland. However, there is a beautiful beach usually deserted other than a few
nudists enjoying the privacy. An abandoned hotel on the hillside was a victim of
hurricane Luis in 1995, then of Irma in 2017, and has never reopened.

Bien protégée, sauf des rares coups de
houle du nord, la baie de Grand-Case
reste le mouillage le plus pittoresque de
Saint-Martin. C’est l’escale idéale pour le
premier ou le dernier jour d’une croisière
entre Saint-Martin et Anguilla. Les plaisanciers
amarrent leur canot sur le plus petit
ponton et accèdent au cœur du village.
La vie est douce à Grand-Case et l’on y
trouve de très bons restaurants, plusieurs
épiceries et de jolies boutiques de mode
qui bordent la plage et le boulevard. Au
crépuscule, on touche du doigt la magie
des tropiques à Grand-Case, avec des
couchers de soleil souvent spectaculaires.
En pleine saison, certains mardis
soirs, le boulevard qui longe la mer est
interdit à la circulation. Les orchestres locaux
y entraînent un public en liesse, qui
se déhanche au rythme des tambours,
des trompettes ou des guitares.

north swell, Grand Case Bay is the most
picturesque anchorage in Saint-Martin. It
is the perfect place to anchor on the first
or last day of a cruise between Marigot
and Anguilla. Sailors can tie up at the
smaller pontoon for easy access to the
center of the village. Life is easy in Grand
Case and there is no lack of choice when
it comes to the restaurants that line the
beach and the boulevard. One can also
find several grocery stores and fashion
shops. At twilight, Grand Case sparkles
with the magic of the caribbean’s spectacular
sunsets. During the high peak of
the winter season, on several Tuesday
nights, the boulevard that runs along
the waterfront is closed to all traffic, and
local bands get everyone into a good
mood, with hips swaying to the rhythm of
drums, trumpets, or guitars.

par des bateaux ne
tenant pas compte des
indications inscrites sur
les bouées. Le Rocher
Créole est l’un des plus
beaux sites de plongée de
Saint-Martin, pour les débutants
comme pour les
plongeurs confirmés. Peu
profond, accessible et bien
protégé, c’est un site idéal
pour l’initiation à la plongée
et la plongée en apnée.
Il est interdit de débarquer à terre et d’utiliser un engin
motorisé dans une bande de 30 mètres devant la
plage, ainsi que d’escalader le rocher, où nichent les
pélicans et les fous bruns.

mouillage, rouleur par houle de nord-est,

tendance à tourner, il est bon de prévoir
une zone d’évitage suffisante. Les bouées
de mouillage appartiennent à des habitués,
qui vous remercient de ne pas les utiliser.
On trouve quelques bons restaurants
à terre, une épicerie et un centre commercial.
Le plus pratique pour se rendre à terre
est d’utiliser le dinghy dock de la marina.
L’hôtel appartient à la chaîne Secrets et il
est possible pour les visiteurs d’acheter un
«day pass» donnant accès à la piscine, à la
plage et aux restaurants de l’hôtel.

The anchorage can be subject to northeastern
swells, and is bordered by a pretty
beach. Since the winds here change quickly,
be sure to leave enough room for the
boat to swing about when anchored. Several
anchorage buoys belong to resident
boats and should not be used. Ashore, you
will find a few good restaurants, a grocery
store and a small mall. The easiest way to
get onto land is to use the dinghy dock at

hole, has an incredible sense of
peacefulness. One gets to the marina via
a narrow channel, with a maximum draft
of eight feet (2.6 meters). It has 100 berths
for boats up to 75 feet. The marina office
must be reached before arrival on VHF

Tintamare
Tintamare fait partie de la Réserve naturelle
et est totalement protégé.
L’îlot sauvage trouve l’origine de son nom dans
l’espagnol “tinta mare“, couleur de la mer. Un turquoise
d’une cristalline transparence qui invite
au plongeon immédiat, dans le mouillage situé
au sud-ouest, devant la plage de sable blanc.
17 bouées de mouillage jaunes, mises en place
par la Réserve naturelle, sont à la disposition des
bateaux - jusqu’à 15 mètres - et limitent la dégradation
des fonds. Les bateaux de moins de 10
mètres sont autorisés à mouiller une ancre, mais
uniquement sur le fond sableux. Un très joli site
de “snorkeling“ est accessible à deux coups de
palmes du mouillage, dans le prolongement de
la pointe nord. Les plus curieux découvriront derrière
la plage les carcasses et les moteurs d’avions
liés à l’abandon de la piste d’atterrissage, active de
1944 à 1952. Merci de respecter le calme des lieux,
seul site de nidification du noddi brun, un oiseau
protégé qui détruit son nid lorsqu’il est dérangé.

Tintamare is part of Saint Martin’s natural reserve
and is environmentally protected.
The name of this undeveloped little island comes
from the Spanish “tinta mare”. The color of the sea.
A crystal-clear turquoise that you want to dive into
immediately, in the anchorage located on the southwest
of the island, in front of a beach of soft white
sand. 17 permanent yellow moorings placed at the
disposition of boat - up to 50 feet - by the Réserve
Naturelle help limit damage to coral and plant
beds. Boats under 33 feet are allowed to drop an
anchor, but only on a sandy bottom. A very pretty
site for snorkeling along the length of the north
point is accessible by just a few flipper strokes.
Those curious enough will discover behind the
beach the hulls and motors of airplanes used by
pilots when an airstrip here was active from 1944-
1952. Thank you for respecting the tranquility of
this protected zones, the only nesting place for the
Brown Noddy, an endangered species of bird who
destroys its nest if it is disturbed.

Haut lieu du tourisme saint-martinois, l’îlet Pinel
est un lieu paradisiaque et très fréquenté.
Fort heureusement, Pinel redevient une île
déserte à 16h30 chaque jour, après le départ
de la dernière navette. L’îlot est inclus dans la
Réserve naturelle: la circulation des jet-skis et
la pêche y sont donc interdites. Les bateaux
sont autorisés à mouiller une ancre, mais uniquement
dans le sable. L’accès à Pinel par bateau
est délicat et doit se faire en empruntant
la passe entre Green Cay et Pinel.
Depuis l’embarcadère de Cul-de-Sac, des
navettes desservent l’îlet Pinel tous les
jours et toutes les 30 minutes, pour 10 euros
par passager. Deux agréables restaurants
sont ouverts pour le déjeuner.
Le village de Cul-de-Sac est facilement
accessible après avoir laissé le dinghy au
ponton. Une épicerie et plusieurs restaurants,
le long de la route principale, sont
accessibles après une dizaine de minutes
de marche à pied.

A popular tourist destination, Pinel Island is a
perfect little paradise, but often overrun with
crowds. Fortunately, tranquility is restored after
4:30pm every afternoon when the last ferry
leaves. The island is included in the Marine
Park, which means that jet skis and fishing are
prohibited. Boats are allowed to drop an anchor,
but only on a sandy bottom. Access to
Pinel by boat is tricky and it is a must to use the
passage between Green Cay and Pinel.
From the embarcadero in Cul-de-Sac, ferries
head to the small island of Pinel every 30 minutes,
for 10 euros per passenger. Two nice
restaurants are open for lunch.
The village of Cul-de-Sac is easily accessible
after tying your dinghy to a pontoon and walking
about 10 minutes. A grocery and several
restaurants are located on the main road.

One of most interesting things about Green Cay is its proximity to Orient Bay, and the internationally
known Orient Beach. The mooring zone is within the Natural reserve but becomes
untenable when there are swells from the north.

Orient Bay
Le débarquement en canot sur la plage
de la Baie Orientale - internationalement
connue sous le nom d’Orient Bay
- peut être délicat. Il est possible d’accoster
au sud de la plage, face à l’ancien
Club Orient, le spot le plus proche
du mouillage de Green Cay, le plus
facile pour débarquer et remonter son
canot sur la plage. Créé en 1978 par un
Néerlandais conquis par la beauté du
site, le site naturiste du Club Orient a
été ravagé par Irma et sa reconstruction
n’est pas à l’ordre du jour.
Les restaurants de plage de la baie
Orientale ont été reconstruits et tout
est de nouveau prévu pour le bonheur
du touriste: bars, restaurants, boutiques
de vêtements et de souvenirs, et sports
nautiques (planche à voile, Hobie Cat,
kite surf, parachute ascensionnel, jetskis,
«banana boats»…). Au «Village
d’Orient», derrière la plage, on trouve
plusieurs restaurants, commerces, dont
un petit supermarché très bien achalandé
et un marchand de journaux.

Landing by dinghy on the beach at
Orient Bay can be tricky. It is possible to
pull your dinghy onto the beach at the
ex Club Orient, the closest spot to the
anchorage at Green Cay and the easiest
place to get in and out of a boat on the
beach. Built in 1978 by a Dutchman who
fell in love with the beauty of the site,
the Club Orient nudist resort was ravaged
by hurricane Irma, and rebuilding
is not on the agenda yet.
The beach restaurants at Orient Bay
have all been rebuilt, with everything
once again in good shape to welcome
back visitors. You’ll find everything you
need: restaurants, clothing stores, souvenir
shops, and water sports (windsurfing,
Hobie Cats, kite surf, parachutes
jet-skis, «banana boats»…). In Orient
Village, especially around the central
square of the village behind the beach,
you’ll find several restaurants and businesses
including a small, well-stocked
supermarket, and a newsstand.

en septembre 2017, la marina du Captain
Oliver’s n’est toujours pas opérationnelle.
Elle est à vendre, mais un litige entre la
France et les Pays-Bas concernant la délimitation
de la frontière sur ce site complique
la situation. Il est toutefois possible
d’emprunter le chenal, d’accès délicat
mais clair, et de mouiller dans ce trou
à cyclones en veillant à ne pas approcher
l’espace de la marina, où des pieux
sectionnés sont encore immergés. Les
épaves coulées ont en revanche toutes
été sorties de l’eau. À quelques minutes
de marche, dans le petit village, on trouve
une épicerie moderne et bien achalandée,
ainsi que plusieurs restaurants de
bonne réputation.

Totally destroyed in September 2017 by
hurricane Irma, Captain Oliver’s marina is
still not rebuilt. It is for sale, but the situation
is complicated due to legal issues between
France and The Netherlands concerning
the exact location of the border. It is possible
to navigate the channel, where access
is tricky but clear, and to anchor in this
hurricale hole if careful not to get too close
to the marina area, where broken pilings
are still submerged. On the other hands all
submerged wrecks have been taken out of
the water. It’s just a short walk to the small
village that has a modern well-stocked
grocery store and several restaurants with
good reputation.
Great Bay – Philipsburg
Hormis si vous souhaitez avoir un accès direct
aux commerces de Front Street, à Philipsburg,
le mouillage de Great Bay, souvent rouleur,
n’est pas une obligation. Il est toutefois possible
de s’y ravitailler en carburant et en eau
à Bobby’s Marina et d’y faire les courses du
bord. Le chantier situé à côté, équipé d’un
Travelift de 88 tonnes, effectue la plupart des
travaux de réparation et d’entretien. Si vous
entrez ou sortez du côté hollandais de l’île,
n’oubliez pas de faire la “clearance“, au bureau
de l’immigration, à l’entrée du port de commerce
(voir details page 42). Philipsburg s’est
équipé de quais pour recevoir les plus grands
paquebots du monde. Certains jours, cinq ou
six de ces géants des mers sont à quai, ou au
mouillage dans la baie, et débarquent plus de
15.000 croisiéristes sur l’île.

Except if you want direct access to the shops
along Front Street in Philipsburg, mooring in
Great Bay, which can be choppy, is not an obligation.
But there are lots of options for refueling
and watering at Bobby’s Marina. The boat
yard next to the marina is equipped with an 88
ton Travelift that is used for repairs and maintenance.
If you enter or leave the Dutch side of
the island by boat, don’t forget that the Immigration
Department and the Clearance office
must clear all boats. In Great Bay, the Immigration
office is located just at the entrance to the
port (see details page 42). Philipsburg has a
large enough dock to host the world’s largest
cruise ships. Certain days, there may be as
many as five or six of these “giants of the sea,” in
port, or anchored in the bay, delivering as many
as 15,000 passengers to the island.

garantis. Il est préférable de se déplacer
d’un point à un autre du lagon en canot,
en prenant garde toutefois à respecter
la limitation de vitesse de trois nœuds aux
abords du chenal du pont et à ne pas provoquer
de vagues («no wake zone»).

proposent une large gamme de services à l’intérieur
de cet abri naturel totalement protégé de la
houle extérieure, où plusieurs marinas ont eu la
bonne idée de s’installer (voir page 49 le tableau
des marinas). Une fois à l’intérieur du lagon, il est
facile avec une annexe de circuler, en évitant
les embouteillages. Il est possible d’y rester au
mouillage - gratuit sur la partie française, mais
payant sur la partie hollandaise, voir page 48
- mais il est impératif d’y naviguer à très petite
vitesse, en raison de la profondeur variable. Les
épaves post-ouragan Irma ont été évacuées.

inside the lagoon, it is easy to circulate with a
dinghy, avoiding the traffic jams. It is possible
to anchor in the lagoon - see fee on the dutch
side page 48, no fee on the French side
- but one must navigate at very low speed as
the depth of the water varies quite a bit. The
old shipwrecks have all been removed.

Created in 1998, the Réserve Naturelle Nationale (National Nature Reserve) of Saint Martin covers
over 3,060 hectares (7,500 acres) in the North-Eastern part of the French side of the island.
The marine zone of the Réserve, which comprises 2,900 hectares (7,000 acres), is situated on
a plateau that extends between the islands of Anguilla, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy.
Saint Martin’s wealth of ecosystems includes mangroves, underwater plant nurseries, coral
reefs, coastal forests and salt ponds, which means that the Réserve Naturelle shelters
a diversified collection of terrestrial and marine flora and fauna, including numerous protected
species.
The three primary missions of the Réserve Naturelle are as follows:

the management must safeguard the health of the ecosystems.

Une sortie en mer ou une plongée sous-marine
sont les moyens idéaux pour découvrir
l’espace marin de la Réserve naturelle. Des
excursions en bateau à destination, entre
autres, de Tintamare sont organisées par des
opérateurs partenaires de la Réserve naturelle,
ainsi que des plongées avec les clubs
de l’île. Ces partenaires s’engagent à respecter
l’environnement, la réglementation et à
diffuser des informations sur le patrimoine naturel
de Saint-Martin. Chaque partenaire doit
s’acquitter d’une redevance par client et par
jour pour participer à la protection des sites.
Ces fonds sont utilisés à l’aménagement des
sites, comme la pose et l’entretien des mouillages
mis à la disposition des usagers.

Sea excursions and underwater dives are
great ways to discover the marine milieu of
the Réserve Naturelle. Boat trips to places
such as Tintamare, among others, are organized
by the Réserve Naturelle’s commercial
partners, while various clubs organize the
dives. All of these partners are committed
to respecting the environment, as well as
the Réserve’s rules and regulations, and
distributing information about Saint Martin’s
natural heritage. Every partner pays a fee,
per client/per day, to participate in the protection
of the island’s natural sites. These
funds are used for improvement of these
sites, including installing and maintenance
of moorings made available to boaters.

being the mangrove, the coastal vegetation,
and the marine milieu.
Froussards
Path
Between Anse Marcel and the beach
in Grandes Cayes, it takes two and a
half hours to walk Froussards Path and
the last intact coastal forest area on
the island. The path goes along the deserted
Petites Cayes beach, where it is
possible to have a picnic in the shade
after a refreshing dip in the sea. It is
easy to park one’s car at either end of
the path, knowig that it will be necessary
to go there and back.

Situés entre terre et mer, les étangs et
leurs mangroves abritent 85 espèces
d’oiseaux, dont 55 espèces protégées.
Les étangs atténuent les inondations en
cas de fortes pluies, protègent la côte
contre les agressions de la mer, décantent
les alluvions et épurent les eaux
avant leur rejet en mer. Officiellement très
bien protégés – ils sont bénéficiaires d’un
arrêté de protection de biotope pour l’enjeu
avifaune et même inscrits depuis 2012
à la convention de Ramsar – les étangs
sont soumis à bien des pressions et bien
des menaces : dépôts de remblais, déversements
de déchets, rejets d’effluents
d’assainissement non traités, défrichements
sauvages de mangrove…

particulièrement aux abords des étangs, l’idéal étant de s’équiper d’une paire de jumelles...

Important : à Tintamare, il est interdit aux bateaux de mouiller dans la baie de North
Curve et à leurs occupants de descendre à terre afin de protéger le noddi brun, qui
peut détruire son nid s’il est dérangé.

the great egret, the snowy egret, the red-tailed tropicbird, the bridled tern, the Herminier
puffin, the little tern, and of course the pelican — and they can be seen primarily
near the island’s salt ponds, where it is best to take a pair of binoculars… and a camera!

Les tortues marines
La Réserve assure un suivi des pontes des tortues marines
– tortues vertes, imbriquées et luth – avec l’aide
d’une trentaine d’écovolontaires, chargés de relever les
traces laissées par les tortues dans le sable lorsqu’elles
viennent déposer leurs oeufs sur les plages. Toute
source de dérangement survenant lors de la saison de
ponte (mars à octobre) peut pousser ces reptiles protégés
à faire demi-tour et donc à ne pas venir pondre sur
nos plages, menaçant par la même occasion la survie
de ces espèces fragiles. En mer, les tortues vertes ou
imbriquées peuvent être observées toute l’année en
plongée. Elles sont très présentes à Tintamare, où il est
interdit de les toucher et de les poursuivre.
En présence d’une tortue ou d’un bébé
tortue sur un site de ponte, il faut:
• Ne pas toucher l’animal
• Ne pas s’approcher à moins de 2 mètres
• Se placer hors du champ de vision de
l’animal
• Ne pas éclairer une tortue ni utiliser un
flash
• S’assurer que rien ne menace l’animal
• Laisser les bébés rejoindre la mer par euxmêmes

Sea Turtles
La Réserve ensures the study of marine turtle egg
laying habits – leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea
turtles – with the help of 30 eco-volunteers who make
note of the tracks left in the sand by the turtles when
they come onto the beach to lay their eggs. Any sort of
disturbance during the egg-laying season (March-October)
can cause these protected turtles to make a
U-turn and not lay their eggs on our beaches, making
these fragile species even more endangered than before.
Divers can observe green turtles and hawksbill
turtles all year. Sea turtles are found close to the shores
of Tintamare, where it forbidden to touch or follow them.
If you come across a turtle or a baby turtle
at an egg-laying site:
• Do not touch the animal
• Do not go any closer than six feet from the
turtle
• Stay outside of the animal’s field of vision
• Do not shine light on a turtle or use a flash
if you take photos
• Make sure the animal is not threatened by
anything
• Let the babies make their way into the sea
by themselves

Corail et herbier
Un suivi scientifique des fonds marins est
assuré dans la Réserve depuis 2007. Les
herbiers sont la nurserie de nombreuses espèces,
auxquelles ils offrent abri et nourriture.
Ces plantes, écosystème fragile et menacé,
Réserve Naturelle
jouent un rôle déterminant dans l’épuration
des eaux littorales. Les récifs coraliens protègent
la côte de la houle et servent d’habitat,
de nourriture, de terrain de chasse, de refuge
et de nurserie à des milliers d’espèces.
Les ancres des bateaux arrachent les plantes sous-marines et les coraux, les chaînes les
détruisent sur toute leur longueur, alors que ces espèces ont besoin de dizaines d’années
pour cicatriser. Les bateaux doivent utiliser les corps-morts mis à leur disposition ou poser
leur ancre sur les zones sableuses.
Il est interdit de casser et d’abîmer les récifs avec les palmes.
La pêche est interdite dans la Réserve naturelle et tout prélèvement
y est strictement interdit.
Coral and seagrass
The Réserve does a scientific study of the
ocean’s depths since 2007. Underwater plant
beds provide a nursery for numerous species
and offer them protection and food. These
plants represent a fragile, endangered ecosystem,
that plays a determining role in the purification
of coastal waters. The coral reefs protect
the coast from swells. The coral also serves as
a habitat for thousands of species—for food,
hunting grounds, refuge and nurseries.

Boat anchors pull up underwater plants and damage the coral, while chains destroy them
all along the length of the links, and it takes decades for some of these species to recover
and regenerate. It is essential for boats to use the mooring buoys put at their disposal or
drop their anchors in sandy areas only. It is forbidden to break or damage the reefs with fins.
Fishing is prohibited in the entire Réserve Naturelle, as well as
removal of anything animal or vegetal.

Originaire de l’Océan Pacifique et de l’Océan Indien, le poisson lion (Pterois volitans) est
une espèce invasive, introduite accidentellement dans la mer des Caraïbes. Très vorace
et sans prédateur local, il constitue une menace pour nos récifs et nos poissons.

Lion Fish
Ciguatera : danger !
La ciguatera est une maladie alimentaire causée par la consommation de poissons contaminés
avec la ciguatoxine, produite par des algues dans les récifs coralliens. On l’attrape en
mangeant des poissons carnivores ayant ingéré des poissons de récifs. La ciguatera peut
être très grave en cas de paralysie des muscles respiratoires ou malaise cardiaque.
Originally from Pacific and Indian Oceans, the lion fish is an invasive specie, introduced
accidentally in the Caribbean. Very greedy and without local predator, the lion
fish is a threat to our reefs and fish.
When you see this fish :
• Do not touch or frighten it. Its very painful sting
can cause shock and need medical assistance.
• Localise the site.
• If you spotted the fish inside the Réserve, thank
you for contacting the Réserve on 06 90 34 77 10.
Ciguatera is food poisoning caused by eating fish contaminated by ciguatoxins, which are
produced by algae on coral reefs. One can get this illness by eating carnivorous fish that
have ingested reef fish. Ciguatera can be very serious in the case of paralysis of respiratory
muscles or cardiac arrest.

CIGUATERA : MANIFESTATIONS DE L’INTOXICATION
Le plus souvent les signes apparaissent entre 1 à 4 heures après le repas,
plus rarement au-delà de 24 heures.
• Débute souvent par des signes digestifs : douleurs abdominales,
nausées, vomissements et diarrhées.
• Les signes cardiovasculaires traduisent la gravité de l’intoxication :
bradycardie, hypotension artérielle.
D’autres signes peuvent apparaître :
• Neurologiques : troubles de la coordination et de l’équilibre.
Hallucinations, céphalées, vertiges, engourdissements, fourmillements
surtout au niveau des extrémités et du visage. Sensations de brûlure
ou de décharges électriques au contact d’objets froids.
• Cutanés : démangeaisons notamment de la paume des mains
et de la plante des pieds.
• Et aussi : douleurs musculaires et articulaires, fièvre.

Sanctuaire Agoa s’étend sur l’ensemble
des eaux des Antilles françaises. Les
cétacés ne connaissant pas les frontières
humaines, le Sanctuaire coopère avec les
pays voisins. C’est un outil de protection
à la taille des grands domaines vitaux
des mammifères marins. Il constitue un
espace de quiétude pour ces géants des
mers qui doivent pouvoir s’y reproduire,
s’y nourrir et s’occuper de leurs petits en
toute tranquillité.
The Agoa Sanctuary is a very large
marine protected area covering the
entire waters of the French West
Indies. As cetaceans know no human
boundaries, the Sanctuary cooperates
with neighbouring countries.
It is a protection tool on the scale of the
large home ranges of marine mammals.
It is a place of tranquillity for these
giants of the sea, who must be able to
reproduce, feed and care for their young
in complete peace.

Près d’une trentaine d’espèces de
cétacés fréquentent les eaux du
Sanctuaire. Cela représente 1/3 des
espèces mondiales. Certaines y résident
toute l’année, d’autres viennent s’y
reproduire, comme la baleine à bosse
qui migre depuis l’Atlantique nord et est
présente de décembre à mai. Voici les

Comment aller à Anguilla
Il est possible de se rendre à Anguilla par la mer en petit ferry, depuis
la gare maritime de Marigot (sur le front de mer) et jusqu’au
débarcadère de Blowing Point, où l’on peut louer une voiture, si
l’on n’a pas fait de réservation avant le départ, ou prendre un taxi.
Le service est fiable et la traversée ne dure qu’une vingtaine de
minutes. L’enregistrement a lieu à la gare maritime, où l’on doit
s’acquitter d’une taxe de 3€/$5. On paye son ticket à bord : 30$
l’aller simple (enfants de 2 à 6 ans : 15$). Même procédure au retour
avec le paiement d’une taxe de 8$ (25$ si séjour 24h ou plus)
à Anguilla. La conduite est à gauche et la circulation très fluide,
sur des routes en bon état. Ne pas oublier son passeport !

VHF 16) à l’arrivée du bateau à Road Bay et atteste
que le bateau et son équipage ont bien

Road Bay
Road Bay, en bordure de la plage de
Sandy Ground, est un site incontournable
pour les plaisanciers passant par Anguilla,
puisqu’ils sont obligés d’y faire leurs formalités
d’entrée et de sortie et d’y acquérir
leur permis de croisière (cruising permit)
s’ils souhaitent se rendre dans les autres
mouillages de l’île (lire page précédente).
La “marine base“, en bordure de la plage,
regroupe les services de douane et d’immigration.
Ce bureau est ouvert tous les
jours, de 8h30 à midi et de 13h à 16h. Les
skippers doivent présenter les papiers du
bateau et les passeports de tous les passagers.
Une taxe d’entrée de 5 US$ est
appliquée à chaque personne à bord, plus
une taxe de 3US$ pour les passagers seulement
(pas l’équipage). La veille VHF se
fait sur le canal 16, aux heures d’ouverture
(Tél. : +1 (264) 497 2213). Indispensable à
savoir: il est interdit aux bateaux de passer
la nuit au mouillage à Anguilla ailleurs
qu’à Road Bay ou à Crocus Bay. A terre, on
trouve plusieurs restaurants et bars.
Road Bay
Road Bay, bordered by the beach at Sandy
Ground, is a “must” for all boats and
yachts stopping in Anguilla, as this is the
place to take care of all entry and departure
formalities and to get a cruising permit,
necessary to visit the other anchorages
(see previous page). The “marine
base,” on the edge of the beach, combines
customs and immigration. It is open daily
from 8:30am-noon and from 1:00-4:00pm.
Skippers must present the papers for the
boat as well as the passports of all passengers
aboard. An entry fee of $5 US is applied
for every person on board including
crew, plus a tax of $3 US for each passenger.
VHF watch is on channel 16, during the
opening hours of the office (Tel: +1 (264) 497
2213). Important information: in Anguilla,
boats must spend the night anchored at
Road Bay or at Crocus Bay. Ashore, several
restaurants and bars welcome boaters.

Little Bay & Crocus Bay
À la pointe nord de Crocus Bay, Little Bay
est un mouillage de charme. Protégée par
son statut de Marine Park, la baie est équipée
de corps-morts et il est formellement
interdit d’y mouiller l’ancre, comme d’y
passer la nuit. Les falaises ocre tombant
à pic dans la mer constituent un site de
snorkeling et de découverte remarquable.
Si les poissons abondent sous l’eau, les
oiseaux marins, et surtout les pélicans,
s’adonnent à des parties de pêche impressionnantes.
Il est possible d’aller mouiller
l’ancre pour la nuit juste à côté, à Crocus
Bay, l’un des deux seuls mouillages où il
est possible de passer la nuit à Anguilla,
l’autre étant Road Bay. Le ponton en bois
appartient au restaurant Da Vida, qui le
met à disposition des plaisanciers.
At the north point of Crocus Bay, Little
Bay is an anchorage with special characteristics.
Protected by its status as a
Marine Park, the bay is equipped with
mooring buoys, and it is prohibited to anchor
on the bottom, as it is to spend the
night here. Ocher cliffs that drop straight
into the water create a remarkably interesting
snorkeling site. There are often
entire schools of fish, which make it a
good feeding ground for marine birds,
and especially pelicans. It is possible to
drop the anchor at Crocus Bay, one of the
only two moorings in Anguilla where it
is possible to spend the night, the other
being Road Bay. The wooden pontoon
belongs to Da Vida restaurant, which allows
boats to use it for free.

Shoal Bay East
La plage de Shoal Bay East – à ne pas
confondre avec Shoal Bay West – est classée
parmi les dix plus belles plages du
monde. L’eau y est idéalement turquoise
et le sable, très fin et très blanc, se déroule
sur près de deux kilomètres.
La baie est classée en Marine Park et donc
totalement protégée. La pêche y est interdite,
les fonds coralliens sont magnifiques
et très facilement accessibles.
Pour les bateaux à moteur, il existe un
chenal d’accès au milieu des récifs, d’une
profondeur de 1,80 mètre, exclusivement
réservé aux habitués.

The beach at Shoal Bay East – which
should not be confused with Shoal Bay
West – ranks among the ten most beautiful
beaches in the world. The water is
pure turquoise and the powder white sand
stretches for almost two kilometers. The bay
is classed as a Marine Park and therefore is
fully protected. It is forbidden to fish there,
the coral reef is magnificent and easily accessible.
For motorboats there is a 1,8 meter
channel in the middle of the reef, reserved
exclusively for those who know it.

Prickly Pear
Le lagon de Prickly Pear East colle si parfaitement
à l’image du paradis terrestre
qu’il peut parfois être un peu trop fréquenté
par les catamarans de day charter,
seuls autorisés à utiliser le mouillage.
Les autres bateaux devront prendre l’une
des bouées placées au sud de Prickly
Pear East par le Marine Park, et utiliser
leur canot pour contourner la pointe et
entrer dans le lagon. La longue barrière
de corail de Seal Island abrite des myriades
de poissons multicolores, dans un
courant souvent assez fort. Rappelons
que Prickly Pear fait partie du Marine Park
et qu’il est interdit d’y passer la nuit. Restaurant

Prickly Pear East lagoon is the perfect
image of paradise on earth, yet there
are days when there are too many day
charter catamarans, only boats to be
allowed to use this anchorage. Other
boaters will use one of the moorings
provided by the Marine Park, in the lee
of Prickly Pear East, and enter the lagoon
with their dinghy.
Myriads of multi-colored fish can be
found near the long coral reef of Seal
Island, where the current can be quite
strong. Remember that Prickly Pear is a
Marine Park, and it is forbidden to spend

Rendezvous Bay
Il est officiellement interdit de mouiller
l’ancre dans cette magnifique baie ourlée
d’une longue plage de sable fin, mais il
semble que la tolérance soit de mise.
Il faut toutefois veiller à déposer l’ancre
sur fond de sable blanc, assez près de
la plage, et non dans l’herbier, afin de ne
pas porter atteinte à la flore et à la faune,
et tout particulièrement aux lambis, dont
l’espèce est protégée. Rendezvous Bay
est réputée pour son bar restaurant de
plage, le Dune Preserve (vers le milieu de
la plage), et l’un de ses propriétaires, le
chanteur Bankie Banx, parfois appelé le
«Bob Dylan anguillais».
It is officially forbidden to anchor in
this magnificent bay with its long, fine
sand beach, but it appears as if some
tolerance is allowed. Yet it is always
important to anchor on the sandy bottom
closer to the beach, and never in
the underwater plant beds so as not to
cause damage to the flora and fauna,
and especially the conch—a protected
species. Rendezvous Bay is known for
its beach bar/restaurant, the Dune Preserve
(approximately half way on the
beach), and one of its owners, reggae
singer Bankie Banx, sometimes referred
to as the “Anguillan Bob Dylan.”

Le site souvent rouleur de Great Bay est
le seul mouillage possible autour de Dog
Island, qui devient impraticable en cas de
houle de nord. Dans des conditions normales,
l’accostage en dinghy est souvent
difficile, voire dangereux, et l’on préfèrera
alors s’équiper de palmes pour débarquer
sur la magnifique plage.
Déserte, Dog Island est une île privée,
véritable paradis pour les oiseaux et les
ornithologues. Les fous et les frégates
s’y reproduisent et défendent leurs nids
avec force cris si le visiteur s’en approche
d’un peu trop près. Les cactus «têtes à
l’Anglais» et les lys sauvages ajoutent au
cachet de cet îlot peu fréquenté, mais
qui vaut le détour. Les amateurs de snorkeling
passeront un moment de bonheur
au sud de West Cay. Rappelons que Dog
Island fait partie du Marine Park d’Anguilla
et qu’il est interdit d’y passer la nuit.
The waters of Great Bay are often rough,
making mooring around Dog Island difficult
especially when there are swells
from the north. Even in normal conditions,
reaching the beach by dinghy may
be dangerous and it is advised to wear
palms and a mask and swim to the fabulous
beach instead. Uninhabited, Dog
Island is private and offers a true paradise
for birds and bird watchers. Brown
boobies and frigates reproduce here
and defend their nests with loud cries
if curious visitors get too close. The
Turk’s cap cactus (Melocactus intortus)
and wild lilies add a bit of charm to this
deserted island that is worth a detour.
Those who enjoy snorkeling should
head to the south of West Cay. Remember
that Dog Island is a Marine Park, and
it is forbidden to spend the night.
Scrub Island
La plage de Scrub Island est sans
doute l’une des plus belles d’Anguilla,
et il est dommage que ce mouillage
ne soit possible et confortable que
par beau temps.
Une incursion à l’intérieur de l’île, juste
derrière la plage et sa haie de raisiniers,
révèle la presence d’un étang
où cohabitent crabes et échassiers,
dans le plus grand calme.

Anguilla. It is a shame that the anchorage
is only possible and comfortable
in good weather.
A trip to the interior of the island,
right behind the beach and a hedge

Trois choix se présentent au plaisancier à
l’arrivée à Gustavia : demander une place à
quai, mouiller sur une bouée à l’intérieur du
port, ou ancrer à l’extérieur. Il est interdit de
mouiller dans le chenal d’entrée. La vitesse
est limitée à 3 nœuds. Les formalités d’entrée
et de sortie des bateaux se font obligatoirement
au port de Gustavia. Quinze minutes
avant d’entrer dans le chenal du port, les capitaines
sont priés d’appeler la capitainerie
du port sur le canal VHF 12, afin d’informer de
leur arrivée. Les bureaux sont ouverts tous les
jours, de 7h à 18h (tél. : 05 90 27 66 97).
Se munir des papiers du bateau et des passeports
de tous les passagers. Une taxe de
mouillage est applicable à tous les bateaux,
selon leur longueur, et leur largeur pour les
multicoques. L’accès aux douches, l’élimination
des déchets et le wifi sont inclus dans
cette taxe (prière de trier le verre, l’aluminium
et les déchets ménagers). À noter : tout mouvement
du bateau dans le port, même un
changement de mouillage, doit être demandé
au préalable sur le canal 12 à la capitainerie. Un
point d’eau permet de faire le plein sur le quai
du Général de Gaulle, du lundi au samedi, de
7h30 à 17h30. Prendre rendez-vous sur le canal
12 avant de faire le plein de gas-oil, d’essence
et d’eau potable au quai du port de commerce,
à Public. Ouvert du lundi au vendredi de 7h30 à
16h00, le samedi de 7h00 à 11h00.
Plusieurs zones de Saint-Barth, dont l’anse
de Colombier et l’île Fourche, sont incluses
dans la Réserve naturelle marine, dont le bureau

Boats have three possible options when arriving
in Gustavia : ask a berth at the dock, tie
up to a mooring in the inner harbor, or anchor
outside the harbor. It is forbidden to anchor in
the fairway. The speed limit inside the harbor
is 3 knots. Clearing in and out must be done
at the harbor of Gustavia. Fifteen minutes before
arriving at the entry channel to the port,
skippers are required to call the harbor office
on VHF channel 12 to announce their arrival.
The port offices are open from 7:00am to
6:pm daily (tel. : 05 90 27 66 97).
All captains must furnish the papers for the
boat, as well as the passports for all persons
aboard. Mooring fees are collected for all
boats, according to their length, as well as
their beam for multihulls. Access to showers,
trash elimination and wifi are included in
these fees (please sort glass, aluminum and
household waste). Please note : all maneuvers
in the port, even a change of mooring,
must be indicated at the harbor office on
channel 12. It is possible to get fresh water
on the dock in Gustavia, Monday to Saturday,
from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. It is possible for the
boats to make an appointment on channel 12
to refuel, buy gasoline and fill the water tanks
at the commercial harbour, in Public. Open
Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 4:00 pm, and
from 7:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday.
Several areas of Saint-Barts, like Ile Fourche
and Anse de Colombier, are included in the
Marine park, whose office is on the harbor of
Gustavia. A minimal fee of 1 euro € per person/per
day is collected by the port to support
the marine park

Fondée en 1996, la Réserve naturelle de
Saint-Barthélemy est exclusivement marine
et couvre une superficie de 1200 hectares,
répartie en cinq zones autour de l’île. Elle est
gérée par l’Agence territoriale de l’environnement
depuis 2013. L’effet réserve est incontestable.
A l’échelle des Antilles françaises, la
population de tortues marines juvéniles en
alimentation est l’une des plus belles. Dans
Bouées de mouillage
le seul lagon de Grand-Cul-de-Sac, déjà 120
tortues ont pu être identifiées depuis 2020.
9 espèces de requins et 3 espèces de raies
fréquentent régulièrement les eaux de la
Réserve naturelle, qui abritent également
des espèces rares, comme les perroquets
Zawag ou plusieurs espèces de grands mérous.
La réserve possède également la plus
grande colonie de corail corne d’élan.
Des mouillages écologiques sont à la disposition des visiteurs pour découvrir les sites de
plongée et les baies de Colombier et de Fourchue. A noter, seules ces deux baies proposent
des zones ouvertes partiellement à l’ancrage.

La Réserve Naturelle
Founded in 1996, La Réserve Naturelle de
Saint Barthélemy is exclusively a marine
park that covers an area of close to 3,000
acres, divided into five zones around the
island. Since 2013, it has been managed
by Saint Barth’s Territorial Environmental
Agency. The impact of the reserve is incontestable.
In terms of the French Antilles, the
population of juvenile feeding sea turtles is

one of the most important in the region.
In the island’s large lagoon in Grand-Culde-Sac,
120 turtles have been identified
since 2020. Nine species of shark and three
species of rays frequent the waters of this
marine park, which also shelters rare species
such as Zawag parrotfish and several

colony of elkhorn coral.
Ecological moorings are available for visitors at various dive sites as well as in the bays of Colombier
and Fourchue. These are the only two bays that are partially open to overnight anchoring.

Colombier
Accessible pour les terriens par un raidillon
et trente minutes de marche, la plage
de Colombier est très peu fréquentée, sinon
par les occupants des bateaux. La baie
se situe dans la Réserve naturelle marine
et des corps-morts réglementés sont à
la disposition des plaisanciers. La chasse
sous-marine y est interdite et la pêche réglementée,
ce qui a permis à la population

sous-marine d’y proliférer. L’observateur
averti a de grandes chances de repérer la
tête d’une tortue venue aspirer son bol d’air
avant de retourner sous l’eau. Des rémoras,
des tarpons et des barracudas s’abritent
régulièrement à l’ombre de la coque des
bateaux. Au sud comme au nord, les récifs
sous-marins méritent une visite avec
palmes, masque et tuba.

Accessible by foot via a 30-minute hike
along a rocky path, the beach at Colombier
is not very crowded, and is a popular spot for
sailboats. The bay is one of the zones protected
by the Marine Park, and moorings are in
place to avoid disturbing the ocean bottom.
Underwater fishing is prohibited, which has
allowed the marine fish population to flourish.
If you watch closely you might see a sea turtle
lift his head for a breath of air before diving
back under water, while a remora, barracuda,
or tarpon might be hiding in the shade of your
hull. Throughout the bay, there are spots worth
visiting with a snorkel, flippers, and mask.

Anse des Galets
L’Anse des Galets, qui abrite la plage
de Shell Beach, est rapidement accessible
depuis Gustavia. Le mouillage n’y
est pas très protégé et constitue surtout,
par beau temps, un bon arrêt déjeuner.
La plage, toute proche du centre de
Gustavia, a perdu une bonne partie des
petits coquillages qui la recouvraient et
auxquels elle doit son nom. Attention :
l’ancrage est strictement interdit dans la
zone d’atterrissage du câble sous-marin
de télécommunication au niveau de
la plage de Shell Beach. Cette zone est
délimitée par six bouées de signalisation.

Shell Beach (Anse des Galets) is located
a short walking distance from the
center of Gustavia. It owes to name to
the thousands of small shells that were
deposited on the beach when the Port
of Gustavia was dredged many years
ago, but many of these shells were washed
away in recent hurricanes.
Anchoring here is generally calm, and especially
in good weather provides a nice
spot to stop for lunch. But it is important
to note that mooring is strictly forbidden
in the zone where a major underwater telecommunications
cable arrives on Shell
Beach. Six signalization buoys define the
limits of this zone.

Les anses de Grande Saline et de
Gouverneur sont probablement les
deux plus magnifiques plages de
Saint-Barth. Ce ne sont en revanche
pas des mouillages abrités, et il n’est
possible d’y venir en bateau que par
temps calme ou par vent de sud-est,
et pour quelques heures seulement.
Dans tous les cas, il vaut mieux être
vigilant en utilisant l’annexe pour débarquer.
La houle se renforçant en
approchant du rivage, il est conseillé
de mouiller l’ancre à bonne distance
de la côte. Le naturisme est interdit
à Saint-Barth, mais cela n’effraie pas
les nudistes, qui ont choisi de s’installer
discrètement aux deux extrémités
de la plage de Grande Saline.

The bays of Grande Saline and Gouverneur
are considered by many to
have the most beautiful beaches in
Saint Barth. Yet neither one offers
sheltered mooring, and it is only possible
to anchor when the water is calm
or the wind is from the southeast, and
for several hours at best. At all times,
one must be extremely prudent if
using a dinghy as the currents get
stronger near the beach. It is advised
to anchor at a safe distance from the
shore. Nude sunbathing is not legal in
Saint Barth, but that does not determined
nudists who have taken over
both far ends of Saline beach.

traiteur et l’agence de voyages.

Accessible by boat in good weather, and
in the absence of strong winds —especially
from the northeast— the bay of Saint
Jean, because of the proximity of the airport,
is off limits for mooring of all habitable
boats unless you stay outside of the
coral reef (the legal limit is 150 meters from
the coast). It is a charming bay that vibrates
to the rhythm of the small planes taking
off from the airstrip that ends right at the
beach. The mythic Eden Roc Hotel dominates
the beach, which is popular with
many tourists for the calmness of the water.
Numerous restaurants and boutiques
are close to the beach, which is accessible
by dinghy. The village of Saint Jean
also has everything from a supermarket to
haute couture, by way of a drugstore, a travel
agent, and gourmet food to go.

Fourchue
Inhabitée et hérissée de cactus, l’île Fourchue
- dite aussi Fourche - est un mouillage
bien abrité. Ses eaux bleu foncé et les collines
arides qui viennent s’y noyer composent un
paysage inhabituel dans la région. La partie
marine de l’îlot fait partie intégrante de la Réserve
naturelle marine de Saint-Barthélemy
et des bouées de mouillage sont à la disposition
des bateaux. La chasse sous-marine y est
interdite, la pêche réglementée et les fonds
sous-marins très beaux. C’est une escale
parfaite pour déjeuner tranquillement et faire
un petit plouf sur la route entre Saint-Martin
et Saint-Barthélemy. Il est possible de débarquer
sur la petite plage située à l’est du
mouillage et une promenade jusqu’au sommet
de l’île - qui est une propriété privée - est
récompensée par un très beau panorama.

Adorned with thorny cactus, Fourchue Island
- also known as Fourche - has a nicely
sheltered mooring. The deep blue water
and dry hillsides that drop straight into the
surf make for an unusual Caribbean landscape.
The marine part of the small island
is in an area protected by the Saint Barth
Marine Park and its mooring buoys are
available to visiting boats. Spearfishing is
forbidden, fishing regulated and snorkeling
beautiful. Fourchue is the perfect spot
to stop and have a peaceful lunch and enjoy
a siesta or a swim en route from Saint
Martin to Saint Barth. It is possible to go up
onto the little beach located to the east
of the anchorage and hike to the summit
of the island - which is private property -
and be rewarded by a beautiful panoramic
view. Shoes are a must.

Depuis Saint-Martin, il est possible d’aller
à Saba en bateau ou en avion.
Au départ de Bobby’s Marina, à Philipsburg,
le nouveau ferry Makana dessert
régulièrement le port de Saba, puis le port
de Saint-Eustache. Le Ferry Edge, depuis
Pelican Marina, à Simpson Bay, dessert
Saba deux fois par semaine. Durée de la
traversée en ferry : 90 minutes environ.
La compagnie Winair dessert Saba en
Twin Otter chaque jour, au départ de
l’aéroport de Juliana, en 13 minutes. La
piste de l’aéroport de Saba étant la plus
courte piste commerciale du monde, les
pilotes doivent suivre une formation pour
avoir le droit de s’y poser. Aucun incident
significatif n’est survenu depuis l’ouverture

À leur arrivée, les plaisanciers doivent prendre
l’un des corps-morts jaunes mis en place par
le Marine Park. 4 corps-morts près du port à
Fort Bay et 10 corps-morts à Ladder Bay, à
une dizaine de minutes en dinghy du port. Ils
accueillent les bateaux jusqu’à 50 tonnes. Un
corps-mort à Ladder Bay est prévu pour les
bateaux jusqu’à 100 tonnes. Les formalités
d’entrée, assorties d’une redevance, se font
au port : au bureau de l’immigration d’une
part, et au Bureau du Marine Park d’autre part.

On peut télécharger les deux formulaires à
l’avance sur le site sabapark.org . Le bureau
du Marine Park est ouvert 7/7 de novembre à
avril : 8h à 17h du lundi au vendredi, 10h à 16h
le week-end. De mai à octobre, de 8h à 16h,
du lundi au vendredi. La redevance de port est
de 20$ pour les bateaux jusqu’à 40 tonnes et
augmente avec le tonnage. La redevance du
Marine Park est de 3$ par semaine et par personne
pour l’entretien des mouillages + 1$ par
personne et par jour pour la gestion du parc.
Nautical Information
Upon arrival, boat captains should moor at
one of the yellow buoys installed by the Marine
Park. Four buoys are located near the port
at Fort Bay and another ten at Ladder Bay, just
ten minutes from the port by dinghy. Most of
the buoys are for vessels up to 50 tons, but
one at Ladder Bay can handle boats up to 100
tons. Clearance and payment of fees must be
done in port, at the immigration office on one
hand, and the Marine Park office on the other.
One can download both forms (customs and
immigrations form and Marine Park form) in
advance at sabapark.org. The Marine Park
office is open daily from November through
April, from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday,
and 10am to 4pm on weekends. From
May to October, from 8am to 4pm, Monday
through Friday. Port fees are $20 for boats up
to 40 tons, and increase based on tonnage.
Marine Park fees are $3 per week per person
for maintenance of the buoys, and $1 per day
per person for park management.

Créé par le passé par les coulées de lave
du volcan en éruption, le relief sous-marin
de Saba est plein de surprises : tombants,
pinacles, canyons, grottes... Une surprise
attend le plongeur derrière chaque
éponge. La trentaine de sites, quasiment
tous situés sous le vent de l’île, se trouve
à une vingtaine de minutes au maximum
du port, d’où partent tous les bateaux des
clubs de plongée. Le Marine Park a mis
en place des bouées blanches de mouillage
pour les clubs de plongée. La plongée
en solo est interdite. Les amateurs de
plongée en apnée apprécieront les sites
les moins profonds, où ils pourront suivre
presqu’à coup sûr les évolutions d’une ou
plusieurs tortues au milieu des coraux et
des gorgones.

Created ages ago by the flow of lava
during volcanic eruptions, the underwater
relief around Saba is full of surprises:
slopes, pinnacles, canyons, and caves... A
dramatic surprise awaits the diver at every
turn. About 30 sites, almost all on the
leeward side of the island, are located
within a maximum of 20 minutes from
the port by boat. The Marine Park has installed
white buoys for used by dive clubs.
Solo diving is forbidden. Those who like to
dive without air tanks will appreciate the
shallower sites, where they can follow the
movement of one or more sea turtles in a
landscape of coral and sea fans.

une vingtaine de sentiers généralement
bien balisés attendent les randonneurs.
Le plus réputé – «Mount Scenery Stairway»
– prend son départ à l’entrée du village de
Windwardside, en montant sur la gauche.
Tout près de là, la «Trail Shop» dispose de
toutes les informations sur le réseau de sentiers.
L’excursion d’une heure et demie, dans
une végétation dense et à l’ombre du feuillage,
amène le randonneur au sommet de
ce volcan, dont la dernière éruption remonte
aux environs de 1640. Tout en haut, fougères
arborescentes, orchidées et acajous font partie
de cette forêt tropicale humide, dans une
fraîche atmosphère. «Elfin Trail» est le plus ancien
sentier de l’île, utilisé par des générations
de fermiers cultivant sur les pentes du volcan.
«The Ladder», une autre excursion, consiste
à descendre – puis à remonter! – les 400
marches par lesquelles étaient transportées à
dos d’âne ou d’homme les marchandises qui
arrivaient par bateau, avant la construction de
la route actuelle, terminée en 1958. Près de
l’aéroport, un petit sentier mène à des piscines
naturelles – «Tide Pools» – alimentées par les
vagues. Un sentier inhabituel mène à une ancienne
mine de soufre (sulphur mine).

Hiking Trails
Maintained by the Saba Conservation Foundation,
twenty well-marked trails await those
who like to hike. The most popular - Mount
Scenery Stairway - starts at the entry to the
village of Windwardside. Nearby, the Trail
Shop has extensive information and maps for
the island’s network of trails. Through dense
vegetation whose leaves provide shade, a
90-minute excursion leads hikers to the summit
of Mount Scenery, a volcano whose last
eruption dates back as far as 1640. At the top,
large ferns, orchids and mahogany trees are
part of a rainforest, with cool, refreshing air.

The Elfin Trail follows the historic paths once
used by earlier generations who farmed
the mountain’s slopes. As the island’s most
diverse trail, it takes in three ecosystems
- woodlands, rainforest, and cloud forest.
The Ladder, a different excursion, takes you
down—and then back up—the 400 steps by
which merchandise arriving by boat was carried
by mule or manpower in the days before
the road was completed in 1958. Near the
airport, a small trail leads to the natural Tide
Pools, fed by waves lapping against the shore.
Another original trail leads to a sulphur mine.

Saint-Eustache – ou Statia (prononcer stécha)
– a été la première puissance étrangère
à officiellement reconnaître les États-Unis
d’Amérique. Recherché par les Anglais, le
navire Andrew Doria battant pavillon américain
arriva devant l’île le 16 novembre 1776,
afin d’embarquer des armes et des munitions.
C’est alors que le gouverneur néerlandais ordonna
de tirer onze coups de canon en son
honneur. Une plaque offerte en 1939 par le
président F.D. Roosevelt commémore cet
événement dans l’enceinte du Fort Oranje.

A bit
of history
Sint Eustatius – or Statia (pronounce
stay-sha) – was the first foreign nation
to officially recognize the United States
of America. Wanted by the British, the
American ship, Andrew Doria, sailed
to the island on November 16, 1776
to stock up on arms and ammunition.
When the ship arrived, Statia’s Dutch
governor fired an eleven gun salute. Later,
President F.D. Roosevelt presented
the island with a plaque commemorating
the historic day at Fort Oranje.

in Statia’s national parks.

De belles bâtisses datant du 18ème siècle
s’alignent le long des quais de la capitale,
Oranjestad. La petite bourgade abrite le
fort Oranje, construit en pierres volcaniques
et très bien restauré. Au sud de la
ville, on trouve le cimetière juif et les vestiges
de la synagogue Honen Dalim. Le fort
de Windt, site de l’une des premières colonies
juives aux Antilles, se visite. Il faisait
partie du système de défense de l’île mis
en place par les Pays-Bas.

beautifully restored Fort Oranje, constructed
from volcanic stones. And on the southern
end of town is the Jewish cemetery
and ruins of the Honen Dalim Synagogue.

communities in the Antilles, is also there.
It was part of the island’s defense system
put into place by the Netherlands.

Au Sud de l’île se trouve un volcan relativement
jeune et parfaitement formé : «The
Quill». Classé en Parc national, il est géré par
la Fondation des parcs nationaux de St-Eustache
(STENAPA) et s’élève à une hauteur
de 600 mètres. Le cratère abrite une forêt
semi-tropicale et rend l’excursion particulièrement
intéressante. Une fois arrivé au bord
du cratère, descendez explorer la luxuriante
végétation qui le tapisse. À l’intérieur, vous
pourrez admirer les gigantesques cotonniers
et les arbres fruitiers, qui forment une belle
canopée, et découvrir au moins 17 sortes
d’orchidées. Vous croiserez peut-être des
iguanes, des crabes de terre, des papillons et
des oiseaux exotiques. Prenez des photos et
relaxez-vous un moment avant de retourner
vers le sommet. La randonnée est possible
avec ou sans guide. Si vous décidez de partir
seul, il vous faudra 45 minutes pour marcher
de la sortie de la ville à l’entrée principale
du sentier. Des panneaux d’information jalonnent
le sentier. Il est possible de réserver
une visite guidée, au moins 3 jours à l’avance.

The crater contains semi-tropical rainforest;
an intriguing hiking expedition. After you have
made the ascent to the crater rim, explore the
verdant lush tropical rainforest, nestled within
its enormous crater. Inside the crater you can
enjoy gazing up at the gigantic silk cotton and
fruit trees that tower the canopy. There are at
least 17 different kinds of orchids. You may also
come across iguanas, land crabs, butterflies
and exotic birds.
Take photos and relax before returning to the
rim. Hiking the Quill can be done with or without
a tour guide. If you decide to go alone, the
walk from lower town to the main entrance of
the Quill will take about 45 minutes. Signs are
posted along the trail to guide you. Tour guides
are available by reservation at least 3 days in

Plongée / Diving
Statia
La qualité de la plongée sous-marine surpasse
toutes les autres destinations de la Caraïbe,
dans un parc marin protégé depuis 15 ans. Des
murs et des pinacles couverts de coraux et
d’éponges composent de spectaculaires décors
naturels. Ces sites sont fréquentés par le
requin gris, la raie léopard, la tortue imbriquée, la
tortue verte et le requin nourrice. Les récifs peu
profonds, entre 12 et 23 mètres, ont été sculptés
dans des piliers volcaniques, couverts de coraux
durs et mous. Les poissons sont abondants et
l’on trouve certaines espèces rares, comme le
rouget volant, que l’on peut voir tous les jours
à Saint-Eustache. Entre 18 et 21 mètres, des
épaves enchevêtrées attendent le plongeur. La
Charles Brown en est la plus réputée. Il est le
plus grand bateau à avoir coulé dans la Caraïbe.
Les plongeurs ont découvert des bouteilles anciennes
intactes et même de ces perles bleues
que l’on donnait autrefois comme salaire aux esclaves.
Tous les sites de plongée sont équipés
d’un mouillage. Un seul bateau est autorisé par
site afin de donner aux plongeurs tout l’espace
nécessaire à leur exploration sous-marine.
The quality of deep-sea diving in Statia’s protected
Marine Park, already in existence for
15 years, exceeds any other Caribbean destination.
The coral and sponge covered walls
and pinnacles provide breathtaking scenery.
These sites are frequented by grey reef sharks,
spotted eagle rays, hawksbill turtles, green
turtles and nurse sharks. The shallower reefs of
40 to 75 feet have been carved from volcanic
fingers that are covered with a variety of soft
and hard corals. The fish life is abundant with a
few rarer species like the flying gurnards, that
are seen daily in Statia. Divers will find tangled
shipwrecks 60 to 70 feet underwater. The
Charles Brown is one of them. Measuring 328
feet long, it is one of the longest ships to sink in
the Caribbean. Divers have found perfectly intact
antique bottles and even blue beads once
given to slaves as their salary. All dive sites are
marked with a mooring line. And only one dive
boat is allowed per site to give divers plenty of
space to explore underwater.
