Golf en la Argentina / Golf in Argentina 

Cada vez que un golfista realiza una jugada, pasado y presente del golf argentino se enlazan en ese 

momento único e irrepetible. Es que desde hace más de cien años esta práctica se ha ganado un lugar 

destacado en el universo deportivo del país. 

Whenever a golfer plays a stroke, the past and present of Argentine golf are linked together in that 

unique and unrepeatable moment. for over a hundred years this practice has won itself an outstanding 

place in the country’s sporting universe. 

Como todas las buenas historias, ésta tiene un comienzo fechado, y 

es 1879. Ese año, el escocés Henry smith fue demorado en el puerto 

de Buenos Aires porque un empleado aduanero se alarmó por los 

palos de madera y hierro que traía en su equipaje. Esta divertida 

anécdota muestra que hasta entonces nadie en el país había oído 

hablar del golf. Pero esto se modificó con la llegada de capataces 

e ingenieros contratados en el reino unido para la construcción 

del ferrocarril: ellos trajeron al país la costumbre de practicar este 

fascinante deporte. El primer partido del que se tiene registro lo 

disputó Valentín G. G. scroggie y tuvo lugar en 1885, en la plaza de 

san martín. A partir de estos episodios iniciáticos, las ganas de jugar 

empezaron a expandirse: en 1897 se fundó el Campeonato Amateur 

del río de la Plata. A la vez, tanto los clubs como las competencias 

empezaron a crecer. se hizo necesario, entonces, unificar los 

handicaps, además de interpretar las reglas de golf que llegaban 

desde saint Andrews. Estos elementos motivaron que, en 1926, en 

una importante reunión en la que participaron las más distinguidas 

instituciones de la época, naciera la Asociación Argentina de Golf. 

Desde entonces, muchos golfistas han brillado tanto en el país 

like all good stories, this one has a beginning, and it dates back 

to 1879. In that year, the scotsman Henry smith was delayed at 

the port of Buenos Aires because a Customs and Excise employee 

was alarmed by the wooden and metal sticks he brought in his 

luggage. This amusing anecdote shows that until then nobody 

in the country had heard of golf. But this altered with the arrival 

of railway engineers and supervisors contracted from uK for the 

building of the railway: they brought to this country the custom 

of playing this fascinating sport. The first recorded match was 

played by Valentín G.G. scroggie and took place in 1885, at the 

Plaza de san martín. As from these early episodes, the desire 

to play started to spread: in 1897, the río de la Plata Amateur 

Championship was founded. At the same time, not only clubs 

but also competitions started to grow. It then became necessary 

to unify the handicaps, as well as to interpret the golf rules that 

arrived from st. Andrews. These factors meant that, in 1926, at an 

important meeting in which the most distinguished institutions of 

the day took part, the Argentina Golf Association was born. 

since then, many golfers have shone both at home and abroad.

como en el exterior. Entre todos ellos sobresale el maestro roberto 

De Vicenzo, uno de los más queridos y admirados deportistas, que 

ha ganado 232 competencias profesionales alrededor del mundo, 

incluidos los Abiertos de 17 países, como el British open en 1967. 

Con un estilo propio, ha contribuido a transmitir su pasión a las 

nuevas generaciones. otra luminaria es Eduardo “Gato” romero, 

quien tiene más de 100 victorias en su carrera, incluidas 8 en el 

European Tour y 6 en el senior Tour, además de haber ganado el 

us senior open. otro hito nacional es Ángel “Pato” Cabrera, quien 

sorprendió al mundo al ganar en 2007 el us open y en 2009 se 

convirtió en el primer latinoamericano consagrado en el masters de 

Augusta. Y otros grandes forman parte de esta historia, como José 

Jurado, Jorge ledesma, Vicente fernández, José Cóceres y jóvenes 

promesas como Andrés romero. Además, destacados diseñadores 

locales y extranjeros como Alister macKenzie, robert von Hagge, Jack 

Nicklaus, luther Koontz, Juan Dentone, Caprile & Capdepont, Greg 

Norman, Gary Player, mark Adams, randy Thompson y Emilio serra 

han dejado su sello en nuestro país. También, como símbolo del valor 

que posee este deporte, hay que considerar que el Abierto local es 

una de las más antiguas competencias nacionales del mundo. 

Todos estos logros coronan una actividad que maravilla desde el campo 

de golf más austral del planeta hasta la calidez de Jujuy. Hoy en día, 

son muchísimos los fanáticos que se lucen en las alrededor de 320 

canchas de todo el país. selectas y eclécticas, se caracterizan por su 

multiplicidad: desde clásicos diseños británicos hasta modernos trazos 

americanos, todos conjugan armoniosamente el espíritu local y el aura 

cosmopolita. Definitivamente, la Argentina es un país privilegiado para 

la práctica de este deporte tanto por las condiciones climáticas como 

por la calidad de sus campos de golf, con desafiantes diseños y una 

infraestructura de máxima categoría. Y a eso se suma el placer de jugar 

rodeado de imponentes paisajes naturales, dignos de una postal de 

ensueño. Todos estos méritos han sido reconocidos por la International 

Association of Golf Tour operators (IAGTo), la entidad global que 

promueve el turismo de golf, que ha premiado a la Argentina como 

mejor Destino de Golf del Año 2011 en latinoamérica y el Caribe. Este 

reconocimiento ya lo había recibido en 2008, lo que la convierte en el 

primer país en obtener el premio en dos ocasiones. 

sin dudas, hace más de un siglo que la Argentina y el golf están 

escribiendo esta historia de la que vos podés formar parte.

outstanding amongst them all is the golfing master roberto De 

Vicenzo, one of the most loved and admired sports figures, who has 

won 232 professional competitions around the world, including the 

opens of 17 countries, like the British open in 1967. With a style 

of his own, he has contributed to passing on his passion to the new 

generations. Another luminary is Eduardo “Gato” romero, who 

has over 100 victories in his career, including 8 on the European 

Tour and 6 on the senior Tour, as well as winning the us senior 

open. Another top Argentine player is Ángel “Pato” Cabrera, who 

surprised the world by winning the us open in 2007, and in 2009 

he became the first latin American to win the masters in Augusta. 

And other greats forming part of this history include: José Jurado, 

Jorge ledesma, Vicente fernández, José Cóceres and promising 

youngsters like Andrés romero. moreover, outstanding local and 

foreign designers like Alister macKenzie, robert von Hagge, Jack 

Nicklaus, luther Koontz, Juan Dentone, Caprile & Capdepont, Greg 

Norman, Gary Player, mark Adams, randy Thompson and Emilio 

serra have left their mark on our country. Also, as a symbol of the 

value this sport has, it must be taken into consideration that the 

local open is one of the oldest national golf contests in the world. 

All these achievements crown an activity that thrills from the world’s 

southernmost golf course to the warmth of Jujuy. Nowadays, there 

are vast numbers of fanatics who play extremely well on the 320 

or so courses all over the country. select and eclectic, they are 

characterized by their multiplicity: from classic British designs to 

modern American layouts, all harmoniously combine local spirit with 

a cosmopolitan aura. Argentina is definitely a privileged country for 

playing this sport both for the climatic conditions and for the quality 

of its golf courses, with challenging designs and infrastructure of the 

highest level. And to this is added the pleasure of laying surrounded 

by impressive natural scenery, worthy of an idyllic snapshot. All these 

merits have been recognized by the International Association of Golf 

Tour operators (IAGTo), the worldwide organization that promotes 

golfing tourism, which has awarded Argentina with the title of Best 

Golf Destination 2011 in latin America and the Caribbean. It had 

already received this recognition in 2008, which makes it the first 

country to obtain the award twice.

writing this story of which you can become a part.

Dueña de un clima templado, sobre la costa del río de la Plata emerge 

la capital del país, destino privilegiado de sudamérica. En ella, cada 

uno de sus barrios delinea un itinerario distinto y fascinante. Desde la 

mítica Plaza de mayo se puede conocer el casco histórico, que incluye 

la Casa de Gobierno (conocida como “Casa rosada”), la Catedral, el 

Cabildo y la Avenida de mayo. Además, también se pueden fotografiar 

emblemas de la arquitectura, como el Palacio Barolo y el Teatro

But there is more, because 300 km (186 miles) from Buenos Aires City, 

some sandy beaches bordering the Atlantic ocean start and form a 

fascinating itinerary which proposes sun and sea, added to cultural 

and sporting activities. from san Clemente as far as Pehuen-Có, there

Este increíble campo de golf se ubica en san Isidro, un exclusivo 

barrio, a muy pocos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad. 

Conforma un espacio privilegiado, que ha sido asidua sede del 

Abierto de la república (18 veces, la última en 2010). los 36 

hoyos se distribuyen en dos canchas de 18 hoyos cada una: 

la Azul, de par 72 y 6.351 yardas; y la Colorada, de par 72 y 

6.577 yardas. Esta última cancha, donde se jugó dos veces 

la Copa del mundo (en 1962 y 1970), es la predilecta de los 

jugadores profesionales. Allí también se lució roberto De 

Vicenzo, en el máximo esplendor de su carrera. los greens son 

consistentes y veloces, rodeados de bunkers y espejos de agua 

estratégicamente ubicados. El diseñador de estas dos maravillas 

es reconocido mundialmente y es el responsable del trazado de 

la cancha en la que se disputa el masters de Augusta, uno de 

los torneos más importantes del mundo. ¿El hoyo imperdible? 

El 10 de la Colorada, dado que su muy marcada barranca 

rechaza los tiros de aproximación si no se realizan con precisión. 

sin dudas, ideal para un juego estratégico y apasionante. 


This incredible golf course is located in san Isidro, an exclusive 

neighborhood just a few kilometers from the city center. 

It forms a privileged space, which has regularly hosted the 

Argentine open (18 times, the last in 2010). The 36 holes are 

spread over two courses of 18 holes each: the Azul, par 72 

and 6,351 yards; and the Colorada, par 72 and 6,577 yards. 

This last course, where the World Cup was played twice (in 

1962 and 1970), is the favorite of professional players. There, 

too, roberto De Vicenzo shone at the height of his splendid 

career. The greens are consistent and fast, surrounded by 

bunkers and water hazard strategically placed. The designer 

of these two wonders is renowned worldwide as is the man 

responsible for the layout of the course on which the masters 

is played in Augusta, one of the most important tournaments 

in the world. The hole not to miss? The 10th on the Colorada, 

given that its very marked slope turns back approaching shots 

if they are not made with precision. Without a doubt, ideal for 

strategic and passionate play.

este club de golf, que es considerado por la prestigiosa publicación 

especializada Golf Digest entre las 100 mejores canchas del 

mundo fuera de Estados unidos y figura en el segundo puesto 

en América latina. se ubica en un encantador club de campo, 

en la localidad de Bella Vista, a tan sólo 25 minutos de la ciudad. 

son 27 hoyos distribuidos en tres canchas. la Yellow y Green, 

cada una de 9 hoyos, conforman una cancha campeonato de 

par de 72 y 6.755 yardas. El diseño es de estilo links y cuenta 

con desniveles, bunkers de arena, lomas, lagunas y greens con 

movimiento. El circuito implica un gran desafío para los golfistas, 

por la multiplicidad de tees en cada hoyo, pero también resulta 

muy versátil para los diferentes niveles de juego. Dadas sus 

espléndidas condiciones, ha sido sede del 890 , 990 y 1020 Abierto 

de la república, de la Copa los Andes (1994), del mundial de 

Golf Aficionados por Equipos (2010) y del EmC2 World Golf 

Championships (2000). Cisnes y gaviotas, junto a hermosas 

especies arbóreas, delinean alrededor un paisaje fascinante. 


A dream come true, that is how the history of this golf club 

could be defined, regarded by the prestigious specialist 

publication Golf Digest as being among the 100 best courses 

in the world outside usA, and it stands at second place in latin 

America. It is set in a delightful country club, in the small town 

of Bella Vista, just 25 minutes’ drive from Buenos Aires City. 

It has 27 holes spread out over three courses. The Yellow and 

Green, each of 9 holes, form a par 72 championship course 

of 6,755 yards. The design is links style and has differences of 

level, sand bunkers, hills, lakes and greens with movement. The 

circuit represents a great challenge for golfers, for the large 

number of tee blocks at each hole, but it is also very versatile 

for different levels of play. Given its splendid conditions, it 

hosted the 89th, 99th and 102nd Argentine open, la Copa los 

Andes (1994), World Amateur Golf Team Championship (2010) 

and the EmC2 World Golf Championships (2000). swans and 

gulls, along with lovely tree species, make for a fascinating 

landscape all around.

Desde 1926, la historia de este club está unida al desarrollo y al 

progreso del golf en el país. Aunque el campo de juego se ha 

transformado con los años, no perdió la esencia con la que fue 

concebido y que le otorga una singularidad única. Actualmente, 

pueden disfrutarse tres magníficas canchas de estilo inglés, de 9 

hoyos cada una. la Blanca y la Colorada conforman los 18 hoyos 

principales, utilizadas para los importantes torneos que se juegan 

en el club, como el Abierto de la república, el mundial de Golf 

Aficionados por Equipos y el tradicional Torneo de maestros, 

que ha tenido ganadores internacionales de renombre. los 9

Ever since 1926, this club’s history has been linked with the 

progress and development of golf in Argentina. Although the 

field of play has been transformed over the years, it has not lost 

the essence with which it was conceived and which singles it out 

as unique. Three magnificent English style courses may currently 

be enjoyed, each with 9 holes. The Blanca and the Colorada 

make up the main 18 holes, used for important tournaments 

played at the club, like the Argentine open, the World Amateur 

Team Championship and the traditional masters’ Tournament, 

which has had renowned international winners. The remaining 

9 holes are on the Azul course. Without a doubt, the fame of 

these three courses – adored by both amateur and professional

pingüinos, y el saludo a las ballenas que recalan todos los años en 

Puerto madryn. Además, actividades de ecoturismo pueden realizarse 

en el precioso Parque Nacional los Alerces y, para los aficionados a la 

nieve, la Hoya es un espléndido centro de esquí cerca de Esquel.

Superficie. la Argentina tiene casi 3,8 millones de km 2 . sus 3.800 km 

de longitud se extienden desde los 22º hasta los 55º de latitud sur. 

Capital. Ciudad de Buenos Aires. 

Límites. los países que limitan con la Argentina son: Chile, Bolivia, 

Paraguay, Brasil y uruguay. 

División política. la Argentina está organizada en 23 provincias, 

más la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. 

Sistema de gobierno. representativo, republicano y federal, 

regido por una Constitución Nacional sancionada en 1853 y 

reformada en 1860, 1898, 1957 y 1994. 

Idioma oficial. El español (castellano). otros idiomas muy 

difundidos son el inglés, el portugués, el italiano y el francés. 

Religión. Católica apostólica romana, aunque existe libertad 

de culto. 

Horario legal. GmT (meridiano Greenwich) -3 hs. 

Electricidad. Corriente alterna de 220/240 voltios a 50 ciclos. 

Población. 40.091.359 habitantes. según datos provisorios del 

Censo 2010. El Censo 2001 indicó que el 95% es de raza blanca, 

en su mayoría descendientes de españoles e italianos, un 4,5% de 

mestizos y un 0,5 de población aborigen pura. 

Moneda y medios de pago. la moneda oficial es el peso argentino. 

El dólar estadounidense y el euro son aceptados. El cambio de 

divisas se realiza en bancos y casas de cambio. las tarjetas de 

crédito de mayor aceptación son American Express, Diners, 

mastercard y Visa. Puede haber dificultades en la aceptación 

de tarjetas de crédito y cheques de viajeros fuera de ciudades y 

centros turísticos. Con su tarjeta puede extraer pesos 

de la red de cajeros automáticos en todo el país. 

Formalidades de entrada. Pasaporte en vigencia, con o sin visado, 

según los casos. Consulte en su embajada o consulado. 

Clima. Argentina posee una gran variedad de climas. En general, el 

clima predominante es templado, aunque se extiende a un clima 

subtropical en el norte y subpolar en el extremo sur. El verano, con 

días largos, es favorable en la Patagonia y los Andes meridionales, 

en invierno es la zona ideal para practicar deportes con nieve. 

El invierno es recomendable para viajar por el norte y litoral. otoño 

y primavera son magníficos en Buenos Aires y en todo el país. 

¿Cómo desplazarse? 

Vía aérea. las compañías que vuelan a la Argentina arriban al 

Aeropuerto Internacional de Ezeiza ministro Pistarini, ubicado 

a 37 km de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. los vuelos de cabotaje 

parten del Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, ubicado a 15 minutos del 

centro de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. 

Vía terrestre. Ómnibus. muchas unidades de larga distancia 

cuentan con servicios especiales a bordo. la terminal de ómnibus 

de Buenos Aires está en el barrio de retiro. 

Rutas 

Tipos de ruta. las hay de tránsito libre y con peaje. 

Principales rutas. la 40 recorre todo el país de sur a norte, 

costeando la Cordillera de los Andes. la 3 comienza en Buenos 

Aires y recorre la costa atlántica hasta ushuaia.

Comunicaciones. En todo el país son comunes los locutorios 

(locales con servicios telefónicos y, generalmente, de Internet). los 

teléfonos públicos funcionan con monedas de curso legal vigente o 

con tarjetas que se adquieren en locutorios. Internet es un servicio 

muy difundido en locales específicos, bares y locutorios. 

¿Qué tener en cuenta a la hora de comprar? 

Horarios comerciales. 

Bancos y casas de cambio: lunes a viernes de 10 a 15. 

oficinas comerciales: en general de 9 a12 y de 14 a 19. 

Comercios: de 9/9:30 a 19:30/20:30. 

En el interior es usual que cierren al mediodía. 

los centros comerciales abren de 10 a 21. 

Devolución del IVA. En el Aeropuerto Internacional podrá 

recuperar lo abonado en concepto del Impuesto al Valor 

Agregado si ha adquirido productos nacionales por importes 

superiores a 70 pesos argentinos (por factura) en los comercios 

adheridos al sistema "Global refund".

visit the north and littoral regions. Buenos Aires and the rest of 

the country are magnificent in the fall and spring.

Getting around. 

By air. International flights to Argentina arrive at the Ezeiza 

ministro Pistarini International Airport, 37 km (23 miles) away 

from the city of Buenos Aires. Domestic flights depart from 

the Jorge Newbery Airport, 15 minutes away from downtown 

Buenos Aires. 

By land. Bus. There are many long-distance buses with special 

services. The central bus station of Buenos Aires is located in the 

retiro Neighborhood. 

Routes. 

Types of route. There are fare-free routes and toll routes. 

Characteristics. There are mostly paved two-way roads. In the 

interior of the country, there are gravel roads and paths, generally 

in good conditions. 

Main routes. route 40 stretches across the country from 

north to south, parallel to the Andes mountain range. route 

3 starts in Buenos Aires and stretches along the Atlantic coast 

down to ushuaia.

Bisiness hours. Banks and exchange agencies: monday thru 

friday from 10 Am to 3 Pm. Business offices: Generally from 9 

Am to 12 Pm and from 2 Pm to 7 Pm. shops: 9-9:30 Am to 7:30- 

8:30 Pm. In the rest of the country shops may close at noon. 

shopping malls open from 10 Am to 9 Pm. 

VAT refund. At the international airport, it is possible 

to get a VAT refund if you have bought national products 

for more than 70 Argentine Peso (per invoice) at the shops 

included within the “Global refund” system.
