Side Trip:
I
realized very quickly last Thursday night
that Kenny Chesney has a serious fan
following.
Folks around us knew the songs from the
first two bars of introduction.
Fans we heard interviewed
live on No
Shows Radio claimed
this was their 12th
and 13th time to a
Kenny concert.
A man I saw in the
lobby was sporting a
custom T-shirt proclaiming
this as his
24th Kenny Chesney
concert.
Seeing this performer
in concert has
been on my radar for
MYRNA
WAGNER
several years, but his tour dates and our
calendar just haven’t worked out until now.
I got my tickets for the Sioux Falls event
early — so early that my husband forgot I’d
invited him out on a weeknight date.
Kelsea Ballerini provided a great opening
act, sporting some serious red fringe boots
and getting the crowd on their feet.
We never sat down again after that — the
energy level was so high you really couldn’t,
nor did you want to. Despite a full two
hours of music we still didn’t hear every
Kenny Chesney hit. He worked the crowd,
every inch of the stage, utilized video displays
and graphics and only slowed down
long enough to bring his opener back to the
stage for their duet “My Hometown.”
His energy level put me to shame and
made me feel old despite our similar ages.
To top it all off at the end of the night,
after two encores, the manager met him on
stage and traded him his guitar for a Sharpie.
And then Kenny Chesney signed dozens
of autographs for the fans lucky enough to
watch the concert from the front rows.
That’s a performer who appreciates his
fans.

Saturday mornings this summer
Summer is back and so are the
farmers markets.
The Farmers Market in the
Park is a lot more than just a great
place to find fresh, local produce.
Every Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-
12:30 p.m. from Memorial Day
weekend through September, Farmers
Market in the Park offers a wide
array of products and entertainment
at their location at Arnolds Park
Amusement Park.
This is the fifth season of Farmers
Market in the Park and they are so
grateful for the response they’ve had
from the community for the past five
years.
“We are still a little blown away
and very grateful by the amount of
support we have gotten,” said Krissy
Thiessen, who started and runs the
event. “We are so excited to kick off
this new season that will be better
than ever.”
From the vendors to the entertainment
lineup, the Farmers Market in
the Park continually changes to keep
things fresh and keep customers
coming back. Every week there will
be different offerings in terms of music,
kids activities
and vendors.
“We have live
music every single
week! We also have
a kids activity booth by local
businesses and yoga by
The Studio Yoga and Barre,”
Thiessen said.
This year, there will be a great variety
of vendors to check out each week.
“We have 45 booth spaces filled
this season! There’s going to be some
of your favorites, produce, baked
goods, meats, eggs, flowers, craftsman
items, jewelry, bath goods, coffee,
and more,” Thiessen said. “We
are excited to bring in a few new
vendors this season as well.”
Some of their vendors include
Cherry Lane Farms selling locally
grown microgreens, Little Swan Lake
Winery, Just Doggin’ It selling dog
biscuits and more, Hayhook Farms
with produce, Rissy’s Dry Rubs +
Seasonings, Lakeside Woodworking,
Hayley’s Home Baked Goods,
Dakota Mushrooms and many more.

They have live music booked for
every week through the summer. Memorial
Day weekend will kick off the
summer with Ben Puttman. June’s
lineup includes La Razza on June 3,
Kerry and Adam on June 10, Storm
Rising on June 17 and then the Okoboji
Music Masters on June 24.
Thiessen is excited about offering
up an event to bring local producers
and the community
together.
“The number
one goal is to provide
a community
centered market
that focuses on
buying local. After
that, all our
little goals fall
into place,” Thiessen
said. “I hope
the people that
come connect
with their local
growers and producers.

really important
to support these

and create community
around

The Live at the Lake concert series
is kicking off the summer in a
big way.
The free concert lineup that normally
take place on Saturday nights
at Preservation Plaza in Arnolds Park
Amusement Park is actually starting
this year on a Sunday over Memorial
Day weekend. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday,
May 28, Brulé will take the stage.
This will be the award-winning Native
American music group’s first time
performing in Arnolds Park.
“A group of people from Sioux Falls
had seen them perform up there and
thought it would be a good fit for
something new at the Park,” said Paul
Plumb, the marketing director with Arnolds
Park Amusement Park. “We are
excited to give the public a new genre
of music that we have not had here
before.”
And what a way to start.

audiences with a mergence of cultural
rock and theatrical instrumentations.
Now in their 20th season, their national
performances carry the same contagious
excitement as Trans Siberian Orchestra,
Celtic Thunder, and Riverdance — but
with the emotional impact of the American
Indian culture,” according to the
group’s bio.
Brulé has released 21 albums and is
one of the top-selling Native American
rock music groups with more than 1 million
albums sold worldwide. They’ve performed
all over the U.S. and “has been
named ‘Group of the Year’ five times by
the prestigious Native American Music
Awards, earning seven NAMMYs since
2002.”
Their new take on contemporary Native
American music features both a rock
band as well as dancers to bring the music
to life in a different way.
“Brulé has pushed the boundaries of
contemporary Native American rhythms
and classic rock in their genre-blending
selections. Their electrifying show
consists of a five-piece rock ensemble
augmented with an array of traditional
Native American instrumentation,” the
group’s bio reads. “Paired with the
stunning steps of one of the top Native
American dance troupes, their authenticity
brings a multidimensional art form to
this cultural rock opera.”
Plumb is excited to be giving attendees
a taste of an experience they might never
have had before.
“They have packed the venues when
playing other places like our venue.
From what I have seen online it is a
very active and very entertaining show,”

It’s

CELEBRATION
The Pearson Lakes Art Center is in
celebration mode.
That’s because it’s time for their
Celebrate the Arts! Juried Exhibition
and Art Auction.
The annual event showcases a wide
variety of stunning works of art in
the facility’s Monte Pearson Gallery,
with each piece available for bidding
in an online auction format, which
closes the evening of June 3 during
the Celebrate the Arts! fundraising
event.
After sending out an open call, the
show is comprised of up to three
pieces submitted by each artist. This
year’s exhibit showcases 60 works of
art from over 25 artists.
“This show features a variety
of media and a lot of artists that
we’ve worked with on past exhibits,
