Es bueno siempre pensar en el futuro, pero también hay momentos en la

vida, en que vale la pena detenerse y mirar hacia atrás para apreciar cuánto

se ha avanzado en este recorrido llamado vida. En especial con la manera de

vivir que llevamos hoy en día.

Pensar que hace un año atrás decidí salir de todas mis zonas de confort y

comenzar a vivir mi vida, llenándola de las experiencias del contacto con

distintas culturas. Esto ha sido un aprendizaje muy amplio que nunca pensé

llegar a vivir y en especial que algún día podría compartir cada una de mis

experiencias, anécdotas y felicidades.

Disfrutar cada mañana al ver salir el sol en los rincones que voy descubriendo

en este país, es lo más enriquecedor que puedo tener en la vida, en este

momento. Cuando veía en libros o redes sociales imágenes con la típica

frase; “La Mejor Inversión de tu Vida es Viajar”. Siempre me preguntaba:

¿quién puede vivir de viajar o quién puede disfrutar de tanto viajar? ¡Craso

error! Lo bueno fue que la vida me llevó por otro camino y ahora puedo vivir

mi vida de esta manera.

Y no estoy solo en esto. Todo se pudo hacer gracias al esfuerzo de todo un

equipo dedicado a este proyecto, “La Ruta de Enrique”, incluyendo las secciones

de diseño, prensa, edición, redacción, distribución, administración y en

especial, Gracias al apoyo de las personas que participan en realización de los

artículos y contenidos.

Además quiero agradecer y reconocer el apoyo de todas las personas,

empresas y agencias turísticas, que han confiado y han visto un potencial en

este proyecto. Es por ellos que podemos llegar a todos nuestros lectores.

Son siete mil ejemplares que se envían por correo mes a mes y se distribuyen

en distintos países de América Latina. Este apoyo es apreciado y

It is always good to think about the future, however, there are moments in life worth

stopping and looking back to appreciate how far we have come in this journey called life.

Especially in the way we live life nowadays.

Just to think that over a year ago I decided to leave all my comfort zones and start a new

life, filling it with experiences from different cultures. This has been a broad learning that I

never thought I would get to live, and especially that one day I would be able to share each

of my experiences, anecdotes and happiness.

To gaze the sun rise every morning in the different corners I get to discover in this country,

is the most enriching experience I can have in my life right now.

Whenever I came across books and social media, with the typical phrase: “ The best

investment in your life is travelling “, I always asked myself: “ Who can live of travelling? Or

enjoy travelling too much? Big Mistake! The good thing is that life took me into another path

and now I can live life in my own way.

And I am not alone in this. Everything became possible thanks to the big effort of a whole

team dedicated to this project “ La Ruta de Enrique “, including the following sections:

design, press, edition, writing, distribution, administration and special thanks to the people

that participate in the making of the articles and content.

I would also like to thank and recognize the support from all the people, companies, and

tourism agencies , who have trusted and seen the potential on this

Project. It is because of them that we can reach our readers.

no hay vuelta atrás y la curiosidad de recorrer esta ruta me motiva.”

It is one of those long holidays that you can not pass up, I think if these

small vacations are really for resting or in the end they will be more

exhausting than a normal working day. But there is no turning back and

the curiosity to travel this route motivates me.

Reto: recorrer de norte a sur la Provincia de Manabí en bicicleta

durante cuatro días del feriado.

Objetivo: salir desde Pedernales hacia Puerto López.

Una ruta en la que podemos disfrutar bosques, montañas,

playas, gente y comida. La decisión está tomada .

Challenge: to travel from north to south the Province of Manabí by bicycle during

four days of the holiday.

Objective: leave from Pedernales to Puerto López. A route where

we can enjoy forests, mountains, beaches, people and food. The decision is made.

Day 1: the game

We depart from the land terminal of Quito with

destination Pedernales around eleven at night,

I am accompanied by a couple of friends. To

guarantee the availability of tickets and for

being a holiday, we made the purchase two

days before. Costs vary from 10 to 14 dollars

depending on the cooperative and it must be

taken into account that when traveling by bike

is better a bus with a large hold to not disarm

the bike.

Día 1: la partida

Partimos desde el terminal terrestre

de Quito con destino Pedernales

alrededor de las once de la noche,

voy acompañado de un par de

amigos. Para garantizar la disponibilidad

de boletos y por tratarse de un

feriado, hicimos la compra dos días

antes. Los costos varían de entre 10

a 14 dólares dependiendo de la

cooperativa y hay que tomar en

cuenta que al viajar con bicicleta es

mejor un bus con bodega grande

para no desarmar la bicicleta.

Después de seis horas de viaje llegamos al destino a las 05h00. Por la hora

todavía no hay nada abierto así que lo único que queda es sujetar las maletas,

prender las luces y empezar a rodar. Salir de Pedernales es fácil gracias a una

ciclo vía exclusiva hacia el sur.

Las luces de la ciudad quedan atrás y vamos pedaleando en el silencio del

amanecer, la concentración se interrumpe por los ladridos de perros asustados

ante nuestra presencia. Mientras se acaba la ciclo vía, las primeras luces del día

nos facilitan el camino y nos alientan a pisar más fuerte el pedal pues el camino

es largo.

Pasamos de largo Coaque, hasta encontrar

un pueblo cercano para desayunar,

después de viajar en bus

toda la noche, más un

par de horas en bici,

la comida es una

prioridad.

After six

hours of travel we arrive at the

destination at 05h00. For the hour there is still nothing

open so the only thing left is to hold the bags, turn on the

lights and start rolling. Leaving Pedernales is easy thanks to an

exclusive cycle route to the south.

The lights of the city are left behind and we are pedaling in the silence of

the dawn, the concentration is interrupted by the barks of dogs frightened

before our presence. While the cycle is finished, the first lights of the day facilitate

the way and encourage us to step harder pedal as the road is long.

We passed Coaque until we found a nearby village for breakfast, after traveling by bus all night,

plus a couple of hours by bike, food is a priority.

“El Boló n”

Nuestra primera comida de bienvenida a la costa es un bolón una de las delicias de la costa,

consta de una bola de plátano verde cocinado, aplastado hasta lograr una masa y una vez

que esta lista la bola de esta se la refríe un poco para que se forme una cubierta crocante.

Los bolones pueden ser de relleno de queso, de relleno de chicharrón (la parte grasa de la

carne de cerdo frita en su propio aceite) o mixto que lleva queso y chicharrón, finalmente se

acompaña con un huevo frito y con un café negro de pasar. Una delicia.

Luego de la parada a desayunar, arribamos

a Jama. El recuerdo fresco de un

llantas. Recorrimos el pueblo a pie, en

silencio, intentando pasar desapercibidos.

Poca gente se percató de nuestra presencia.

Durante el recorrido del primer día, experimentamos

la mezcla de sentimientos

propios de un viaje en bicicleta, un

encuentro con uno mismo en muchas

horas de espacios vacíos. El alimento del

cuerpo es el exquisito sabor de los paraderos

a lo largo de la carretera y el del alma

son las formas de las montañas, los

colores de los árboles, los olores de las

fincas, y la gente en sus labores diarias.

Para cuando llegamos a Canoa, la asfixiante

necesidad de una ducha y una suave

hamaca son el premio al gran esfuerzo.

After the stop for breakfast, we arrive at Jama. The fresh

memory of a deadly earthquake was in the minds of the

people and reach to see the small cemetery on a hill

from a vulcanizer where I had my tires checked. We

walked the village on foot, in silence, trying to go

unnoticed. Few people noticed our presence.

During the tour of the first day, we experience the mix of

feelings of a bicycle trip, a meeting with oneself in many

hours of empty spaces. The food of the body is the

exquisite taste of the stands along the road and that of

the soul are the shapes of the mountains, the colors of

the trees, the smells of the farms, and the people in their

daily labors. By the time we reach Canoa, the suffocating

need for a shower and a soft hammock are the prize

for great effort.

Día 2

El cansancio de la primera jornada, más la

comodidad de Canoa nos atrapa, es difícil

ponerse en marcha. Luego de desayunar,

aprovechamos la facilidad del tramo Canoa

– San Vicente, que cuenta con una ciclo vía

exclusiva que nos permite ganar tiempo.,

Cruzamos el puente Dos Caras, donde anteriormente

iniciamos una ruta, por lo que ya

sabíamos que venía un tramo difícil entre

Bahía de Caráquez y San Jacinto.

Al salir de Bahía de Caráquez nos espera

una gran subida, que es el límite natural

entre Bahía Y San Jacinto, el reto es duro,

pero pronto recorremos pequeñas fincas en

las que se pueden apreciar frutas tropicales

de la zona como maracuyá, papaya, entre

otras. En esta parte de la ruta, el bosque

seco se hace presente con majestuosos

árboles de Ceibo de una apariencia pulposa

y con ramas secas propias de una película

de terror. Es inevitable parar un momento y

apreciar todo este paisaje.

Day 2

The fatigue of the first day, plus the comfort of

Canoa traps us, it is difficult to get going. After

breakfast, we take advantage of the ease of

cross the Dos Caras bridge, where we

previously started a route, so we already knew

that a difficult section Between Bahía de

Caráquez and San Jacinto.

When leaving Bahía de Caráquez, we expect

a great climb, which is the natural boundary

between Bahía and San Jacinto, the challenge

is hard, but soon we will visit small farms

where you can appreciate tropical fruits of the

landscape.

El sol de la tarde nos espera a la entrada de

San Jacinto con un re componedor almuerzo

con sazón costeña, un delicioso arroz con

camarones que acompañado de una limonada

bien helada son las pequeñas recompensas

a lo largo del camino.

Ya en ruta, la dificultad del tramo se debe a

las altas temperaturas, la distancia amplia

entre comunidades y lo complicado del relieve

del terreno. Por esto, es mejor llevar

hidratación extra y algo de comer. Exhaustos

llegamos a San Clemente donde de entrada

me seduce el olor de un comedor, aquellos

de camino con fachada de caña y sillas de

plástico con un frasco con ají manaba en el

centro de la mesa. Pronto, un hombre nos

recibe, su apariencia dura y su tatuaje de un

cráneo de vaca no impide que nos sirva con

total cordialidad y especial atención.

The afternoon sun awaits us at the entrance of San

Jacinto with a re-arranging lunch with coastal

El resto del camino es plano, una suave brisa

y el sol poniente que nos acompaña en el

último tramo de este día en el que intentamos

llegar a Rocafuerte. La idea era culminar

la jornada en Portoviejo, pero es preferible

apegarse a nuestra regla de no avanzar

en la noche.

Los

GUACAMAYOS

Cotundo era selva virgen, inaccesible,

casi olvidada, donde los árboles

madereros, frutas silvestres, animales

que inventaban un lenguaje capaz de

hacerlos más dueños de sí mismos, aves

que remontaban el vuelo rebasando lo

permitido e indicando el color

envidiable de sus aleteos, flores de

aroma infinitos cubrían aquel recinto

lejano y lleno de misterios. Allí, en el

corazón de la selva, vivía una mujer en

compañía de sus cuatro descendientes,

todos varones. Desde el día que nacían,

la mujer tomaba un líquido viscoso,

verduzco, llamado Pumayuyo, hasta

que cada uno cumplía un año de edad.

Este Brebaje los hacía fuertes y

decididos, con la conciencia diferente,

salvajes, listos para obrar llevados por su

instinto. Al cumplir el año, se

desarrollaron con rapidez; en la edad

adulta dedicáronse a la cacería.

Cotundo was untouched jungle,

inaccessible, almost forgotten, where

Una costumbre muy peculiar, tenían estos cuatro hombres para que su labor sea más fructífera y más cruel: salían de la

casa luego de comer opíparamente, caminaban tres horas sin descanso, zumbándoles en la mente ese olor de siempre

y llegaban a un alto y coposo árbol, a cuya sombra, con la solemnidad prendida a la montaña y masticando voces

hacia el sol, se desvestían hasta quedarse desnudos; amontonaban la vestimenta bajo las grandes raíces y revolcaban

tres vueltas en el sueldo.

Sufrían un cambio irracional: levantaban sus cuerpos convertidos en robustos tigres, era el efecto del Pumayuyo. Así

atrapaban guatusas, armadillos, saínos. Llegada la noche procedían a ejecutar el mismo rito y regresaban, como

cristianos, cargando cuantos animales habían casado.

Cuando el terror le pesaba en las plantas de los pies, la mujer escuchó a la bulliciosa selva que no paraba de alborotarse.

Va a llover, dijo, tratando de engañarse a sí misma, y continúo corriendo hacia algún sitio. Sus ojos desnudos

enrojecían por el insistente reflejo de la sangre, escurriéndose tras su pierna.

Al huir, el temor se le enredó en los pasos y desapareció el sendero entre el lodo y las astillas que se incrustaron

dejando surcos en su pierna. Con la fatiga estrangulándole la senda, volvió a ver su herida y recordó, con rabia, a los

tigres criminales; eran cuatro, deambulaban por doquier.

The strength of Qichua ripped her throat in a scream of rebellion against the protective Gods. She was all by herself.

get her to a hidden place where her sons could not find her. She covered the wounds with herbal medicines.

saw her wound again and remembered, with anger, the criminal tigers; they were four, wondering around.

La fuerza del quichua desgarró su garganta en un grito de rebelión contra los dioses protectores. Se encontraba sola.

Vana fue la búsqueda de un nuevo refugio, su brújula interior estaba acosada de cansancio, dolor y desesperación.

Atrás se quedó la vida, una choza destrozada y su compañero descuartizado por las fauces asesinas. Hasta el silencio

amenazaba sus labios alterados. La estela abandonada en el camino, de negro amarillento, cambió al rojo espeso de su

sangre coagulada.

Ahora solo la sostiene el instinto de proteger la luz que su vientre alberga. Desde una colina divisó la esperanza en el

azulado humo que salía de la selva. Suspirando hondo, gimiendo el miedo que se ajustaba a sus entrañas, se dejó llevar

por el último aliento del espíritu.

Alcanzó a llegar, con la muerte prendida de sus brazos, al arroyo cercano de la choza donde divisó el humo prendiéndose

como interminable desfile de avispas. La madre de los tigres, la encontró cuando salía a recoger el agua.

Arrastrándola logró llevar el cuerpo hacia un lugar oculto para que sus hijos no la descubrieran. Cubrió la herida con

hierbas medicinales.

Anochecía cuando retornaron, fatigados, los mutantes.

A pesar que tenían figura humana, con su instinto animal olieron algo extraño para ellos. Aquel día no habían

logrado cazar alguna presa.

- Carne humana huele - dijo el menor.

- También yo huelo - agregó otro -.

Carne y sangre humana.

- Busquémosla. En algún lugar de la choza debe estar - Sugirió un tercero.

Buscaron en cada rincón, bajo el piso, dentro del fogón. Nada.

Finalmente, cuando ya estaban furiosos, la hallaron sobre el tumbado. La impotencia y el olor a muerte

invadieron los cuerpos de las dos mujeres. La refugiada tembló descontrolada y lágrimas de maldición

goteaban de sus ojos, ahora ennegrecidos por buscar la salvación.

En la mitad del patio sobre el tronco para preparar la leña, despedazaron sin contemplaciones aquel cuerpo que

ya casi olía a muerte. Comieron su carne y bebieron su sangre. La madre nada podía hacer, se tragaba el miedo,

pudiera ser que el apetito de sus hijos se volviera contra ella también.

- No se coman solamente ustedes – les gritó tímidamente -. Denme siquiera los ojitos.

Lanzaron los ojos al lugar donde la madre permanecía estática, sin mirarlos. Los recogió, procedió a cubrirlos

con hojas de bijao y los ubico cerca del fogón para que permanezcan abrigados.

- Smells like human flesh – said the minor

- I smell is too – added another one-. Human Flesh and blood.

-Let´s find it. It must be somewhere in this Hut- Suggested a third one.

Finally, when they were furious, they found her over the ceiling. The impotence and the smell to death invaded the bodies of

the two women. The refugee trembled uncontrollably and the cursed tears dripped from her eyes, know blackened by seeking

salvation.

In the middle of the Patio, over the trunk to prepare firewood, they tear apart without contemplation, that body which almost

smelled like dead. They ate her flesh, and drank her blood. Their mother could not do anything, she swallowed her fear, it

A los pocos días reventaron los ojos guardados por la mujer y

de su interior salieron dos avecillas que se escaparon hacia los

montes. Crecieron ocultas en cada tronco, en cada rama, en

cada piedra, en cada río, conociendo de un destino inevitable.

Se convirtieron en guacamayos de plumajes coloridos, pero

en sus ojos permanecía latente la venganza contra los

asesinos de su madre.

- Debemos matarlos

- decían cada momento, mientras planificaban la estrategia

contra los cuatro tigres.

Construyeron una gran laguna más arriba de paso que

frecuentaban los cuadrúpedos cuando salían a cazar. Para

cruzar el Río utilizaban un árbol como puente, lo que

permitía llegar al otro borde.

Se escondieron tras los arbustos, esperando el instante

propició para actuar. En el momento que los tigres cruzaban

el puente, al retornar de su acostumbrada cacería, soltaron la

laguna. El agua, desbocada, arrastró lo que encontró a su

paso.

Solamente los tigres se ahogaron. Uno, ya muerto, quedó

colgando de una rama. Las aves lo embalsamaron con ceniza

y abandonaron el cuerpo en el lugar conocido hoy como

LOS GUACAMAYOS.

Los viajeros aseguran que en la noche deambula una persona

por la vía y con el los rugidos de un felino.

A few days later, the eyes kept by the woman exploded, and from their inside, two Little birds escaped towards the hills. They grew hidden

in each trunk, in each branch, in each stone, in each river, knowing an inevitable destiny. They became colorful Macaws, but in their eyes,

revenge against her mother’s murdered, kept latent.

* We must kill them – they kept saying, while planning a strategy against the four tigers.

They built a great lagoon upper than the path all the quadrupeds took to hunt. To cross theriver, they used a trunk that worked as a bridge

to reach the other side.

They hid behind a bush, waiting for the precise moment to act. When the tigers where crossing the bridge, returning from their usual hunting,

they let the lagoon lose. The water , running away, dragged everything on its path.

Only the tigers drowned. One , already dead, was hanging from a branch. The birds embalmed the body with ashes, and abandoned it in a

place today known as LOS GUACAMAYOS (The Macaws )

Travelers assure that at night, a person wanders around the road, with the roars of a feline.

world’s best cacao, but there is a whole world of flavors, I bet you did not

know of. Well then, how would it be that the best chocolate in the world,

has inside the most exotic flavors from Ecuador?

Calú es una chocolatería creada con un solo propósito,

que es deleitarnos con sabores inimaginables al

paladar, donde tomaron en cuenta cada producto de

las distintas zonas del Ecuador y llegaron a lo que sería

un exquisito bombón con relleno.

Ahora. ¿Qué es lo que los distingue de otras chocolaterías?

Pues bien en mi visita probé varias de sus

fusiones, fue increíble. Entre ellas desfilaban; uvillas,

menta mezclada con licor, mortiño , pájaro azul, naranja,

coco, café, mango, higos con queso que fue una de

las más rara y exquisita que probé hasta que apareció

mi favorita, la fruta de la pasión en su fusión, maracuyá

con albahaca, ¡una delicia!.

CALU, a brand with its own personality.

Calú is a chocolate factory with one single purpose,

which is to delight us with un-imaginable tastes , taking

in consideration each product from different regions in

Ecuador, reaching to what it would be an exquisite filled

chocolate.

Now, what is it that distinguishes them from other

chocolate factories? Well, during my visit, I tasted

various sets of fusion-flavors, it was unbelievable.

Between those, we had: Golden Berries, Mint mixed with

liquor, blue-berries, pajaro azul ( local spirit ), orange,

coconut, coffee, mango, fig with cheese ( traditional

dessert ), and the most strange, exquisite and perhaps

my favorite fusion is Passion fruit with basil. What a

delight!

Chaguarmishqui algunos lo conocen como “sangre

dulce”, es un dulce natural ancestral muy consumido

por nuestros indígenas como un gran alimento,

es una bebida o sabia del penco azul, que contiene

muchas propiedades alimenticias y medicinales,

entonces ¿por qué no combinarla con chocolate?

El sabor es indiscutible, el bombón de chaguarmishqui

es recordar nuestra cultura, rescatar los valores

y tradiciones de nuestra gente, es recordar que

venimos de una cultura rica en productos naturales

especiales y que no debemos dejar que se pierdan,

con iniciativas como esta que hacen que estos

sabores no desaparezcan y mantener esta tradición

de obtener el tan preciado dulce natural.

keeping that tradition of obtaining such prestige

natural sweetener.

In Calú, I was given the chance if tasting each one of

the chocolates, putting them into my mouth and

listening to the crack that explodes all of its content

inside complement a sensory taste experience that I

have not felt before, they are the precise tastes,

nothing more or less, it is a perfect combination

without leaving behind its main character, chocolate.

To look at the great variety of chocolates, that have

been created with its unique color and shape that

represent what is inside, it’s a joy for your eyes and

palate, you definitively feel the temptation of trying

them all.

EL CREADOR

Visitamos en Salcedo a Carlos Cueva un joven

de Guaytacama, emprendedor, que trabajó

inicialmente en la panadería con su madre,

estudió dentro y fuera del país y se especializó

en chocolatería, amante de su tierra decidió

volver a Salcedo y hace un año inició este

proyecto que se convertiría en su pasión, elaborar

bombones con sabores no tradicionales.

Empezó a experimentar con diferentes sabores,

los compartía con sus amigos y familiares,

quienes le daban su visto bueno y le empujaban

a seguir su sueño y emprendimiento.

Es así que, respetando las técnicas francesas y

suizas para elaborar estos bombones, se inspiró

en los productos del Ecuador que serían un

sinfín de sabores exóticos y tradicionales de

cada región, continuó experimentando y guiándose

con chocolateros experimentados, fue

tomando en cuenta cada producto de la zona y

llegó a sus propias mezclas y recetas.

Carlos siempre busca algo más, pensó en la

tierra que lo acogió Salcedo y elaboró una trufa

(dulce con aspecto y sabor similar al bombón)-

con pinol, fue la carta de presentación de esta

ciudad.

The creator

We visited Carlos Cueva in Salcedo, a young

entrepreneur from Guaytacama, who worked initially

at his mother’s bakery, he studied in both local

universities and abroad, specializing himself in

chocolaerie. Lover of his homeland he, returned to

Salcedo and a year ago he started this project that

will soon turn into his passion, elaborate chocolates

with non-traditional flavors.

He started experimenting with different flavors,

sharing them with friends and family members, who

would give him a feed back & approval, and push

him to pursue his dream and entrepreneurship.

It is so that respecting the French and Swiss

techniques to elaborate this chocolates, he got

inspired by Ecuadorean products that would be an

endless taste of exotic and traditional flavors from

very region, he kept experimenting and guiding

himself through experienced chocolateirs , he keeps

taking in consideration every product within the

region and resulting with his own mixes and recipes.

Siempre experimentando y con el ánimo de lograr sus metas y sueños. Carlos cada día siente la necesidad

de crear más sabores que nos recuerden un lugar de este país, o nos traigan a la mente una experiencia de

nuestras vidas, o quizá para una ocasión especial.

Como por el día del amor y la amistad que creó un bombón de Frambuesa, perfecto para la ocasión. Sin

duda alguna nuestro país tiene tantos sabores para probar que no pueden pasar desapercibos.

Él es el ejemplo perfecto de la gente emprendedora y trabajadora de este país que día a día me sorprende

y me hace sentir orgullosa de vivir aquí.

Regalar a amigos y familiares sabores de nuestra tierra es un gran aporte a esta gente que se esfuerza por

rescatar nuestras tradiciones y que mejor alegrarles el día con bombones coloridos y deliciosos como estos.

Carlos is always searching for something more, he thought of the land that took him in, Salcedo and elaborated a

truffle with Pinol (traditional hot beverage), it was his personal presentation of this city. Carlos feels the urge each day

to create new flavors that reminds us a place in this country, or brings us a life experience to our minds, or a special

occasion. For example, on valentine’s day, he created a raspberry chocolate, perfect for the occasion. With no doubt,

our country has so many flavors to taste, that they cannot be missed.

He is the perfect example of entrepreneur and working man from this country, that each day surprises me , and

makes me feel proud of living here.

Giving out this type of chocolates as presents to our friends and families, is a great way to support this people, who

puts in a lot of effort to rescue our traditions, and what a better way to brighten their days than with this bright colorful

and delicious chocolates.

No cabe duda que el sabor y el aroma

al momento de tomar un café son

esencial el lugar donde lo estés

tomando. Y en Ecuador existen

lugares mágicos de una gran

riqueza arquitectónica y más que

nada en el centro colonial de una

de sus ciudades.

tasty food or a great conversation with your pals.

There is no doubt that the taste and aroma at the moment of drinking coffee are important, but it is also essential the place

where you are drinking it at. In Ecuador, there are magical places with an architectural richness and more importantly ,

located in a colonial city center.

“El Gringo y La Gorda” es una cafetería en el centro

de la ciudad de Latacunga en el pasaje Tovar, un

pequeño lugar casi escondido dentro de una

casa colonial que fue convertida en un mini

centro comercial sin perder su encanto de

época.

Escapando de la fría noche y de la

llovizna que comienza a caer en esta

plácida pero fría ciudad, ingreso por el

pasillo del Pasaje Tovar hacia la cafetería

y lo primero que me cautiva es la

iluminación. Hay luces que salen de la

pileta de agua ubicada en el centro de

sus jardines, de sus mesas en la terraza y

que en conjunto con la alegría de las

personas que están en el lugar, transforman

esta fría noche, en cálida y de seguro que

aquí pasaré un momento difícil de olvidar.

Una vez dentro, me enamoré inmediatamente

de este sitio, de cada detalle que llena su

decoración, de la música suave, del aroma del

café y sus exquisito platillos.

“ El Gringo y la Gorda” is a coffee shop in the city

center of Latacunga City. Located in Tovar

Passage, a small place almost hidden within a

colonial house that was converted into a mini

shopping center without losing its charm.

Escaping the cold night and the drizzle that

starts to shower this placid but cold city, I

walk into the aisle of Tovar passage

towards the coffee shop, and the first

thing that captivates me is the illumination.

There are lights coming from the

inner patio fountain, from the terraces

tables, and all together with the

charismatic people from the place, they

transform the cold night into a warm one,

which I am sure I am about to spend a

moment too hard to forget.

Once inside, I immediately feel in love with

this place, each Little detail that fill up the

decoration, the soft music, the coffee aroma

and the smell of exquisite dishes.

Inmediatamente me recibe Paty, me invita a tomar

asiento y me ofrece la carta. Al sentarme y ver en

su menú que iba a pedir, veo de lejos que se

acerca un personaje que me llama la atención.

Es Mauricio (El Gringo), quien me da la bienvenida

oficial a su cafetería, me comenta que el nombre

de El Gringo y La Gorda fue por una idea en

conjunto con su hermana Patricia, porque sus

amigos lo trataban como “El Gringo” y a su hermana

como “La Gorda”.

En su cafetería existe una pared en la cual los

visitantes pueden dejar su marca, hay banderas de

todos los países de las personas que han

visitado este lugar y que han decidido

dejar uno que otro recuerdo.

Mauricio (El Gringo), me

cuenta que su comida

representa una fusión

de sándwiches tipo

PO BOY de New Orleans, en donde él vivió por

más de treinta años, hechos con productos locales

y con toda la sazón ecuatoriana.Una de las

especialidades de la casa el sándwich El Gringo y

La Gorda, hecho con pan baguette clásico o

integral (hay dos medidas de 16 o 32 cm), acompañado

de lechuga, tomate, mayonesa tradicional,

cilantro, lomo fino, pierna de chancho, chorizo y

huevos fritos, una delicia acompañada con un

exquisito café.

No podían faltar las ensaladas saludables bien

proporcionadas que tienen una gran aceptación,

también tablitas de quesos y lógicamente

el sabor criollo serrano con las

humitas, postres hechos en casa

y el mejor café ecuatoriano;

además ofrecen vinos,

cocteles y bebidas como

complemento perfecto a

las diferentes comidas

en su momento.

me the menu. Once I

sat down, I see from far

away a person coming

towards me that catches my

attention, is Mauricio ( El Gringo ),

who gave me the official welcoming to

his coffee shop. He talks to me about the name El

Gringo y La Gorda, which came from an idea along

his sister Patricia, because their friends call him

Gringo and her La Gorda.

In this coffee shop, there is a wall in which visitors

can leave their brand. You can see plenty of

different flags from all over the world, from people

who have visited and wanted to leave a memory on

this wall.

Ecuadorean seasoning. One of

the House specialties is the El

Gringo y La Gorda Sandwich, made with

classic or wheat baguette (2 sizes 16 and 32 cm ),

accompanied by lettuce, tomato, traditional mayo,

cilantro, thin loin, pork leg, chorizo and fried eggs.

True delicacy along with a great coffee.

Healthy Salads could not be missed from the

menu , very well portioned have a great acceptance

among the consumers, also cheese appetizers

and of course local taste with Humitas (corn

pastrie), home-made desserts and the best

Ecuadorian coffee.; besides they offer great wine,

cocktails, and drinks as a perfect complement to

the different meals offered.

Después de haber pasado este grato momento en un ambiente cálido y acogedor, con un servicio

personalizado, cordial a precios justos en donde uno se siente en casa y de haber disfrutado una gran

conversación junto a mis dos nuevos amigos Mauricio y su novia Paty quien Administra la cafetería.

Continúo esta ruta, la ruta del conocimiento de nuevos lugares y destinos, como esta oportunidad en

el Pasaje Tovar y su bello jardín.

Cuando pasen por la ciudad de Latacunga en Ecuador, deben visitar “El Gringo y La Gorda”, un lugar

acogedor, con tradición e Historia, pero sobre todo con buenas personas que los harán sentirse como

en casa.

After having such a great time in a warm and cozy place, with personalized service and fair prices, where you

feel like home, and having enjoyed a great chat with my new friends Mauricio and his girlfriend Paty (Manager

of the coffee shop), I continue on this route, the route of knowledge and new places, like this opportunity in the

La caldera fue formada por una masiva erupción freática hace 3.100 años generando 5 km3 de flujos piroplásticos y

cubriendo la zona aledaña con una capa de ceniza volcánica de 20 cm.

“Es uno de esos feriados largos que no se puede dejar pasar, pienso si

estas pequeñas vacaciones en verdad son para descansar o al final

resultarán más extenuantes que un día de jornada laboral normal. Pero

no hay vuelta atrás y la curiosidad de recorrer esta ruta me motiva.”

It is one of those long holidays that you can not pass up, I think if these small vacations are really

for resting or in the end they will be more exhausting than a normal working day. But there is no

turning back and the curiosity to travel this route motivates me.

Cotundo era selva virgen, inaccesible, casi olvidada, donde los árboles

madereros, frutas silvestres, animales que inventaban un lenguaje capaz

de hacerlos más dueños de sí mismos, aves que remontaban el vuelo

Cotundo was untouched jungle, inaccessible, almost forgotten, where timber trees, wild fruits,

animals inventing a language capable of making them more owners of themselves, birds who

went above and beyond the flight, and indicating the enviable color of their flutter, flowers with
