PROBLÈMES DE DÉFINITION Authenticité et intégrité dans un contexte africain LES NOTIONS D’INTÉGRITÉ ET D’AUTHENTICITÉ : Pour construire une vision du futur, il faut pré- server une vision du passé. Les cultures vivantes sont fondées sur la notion que le mes- sage qui appartient à un présent a été et restera actuel. Avec toutefois quelques restrictions : cette notion devrait prévoir une place pour des cheminements spécifiques à travers d’autres influences, sinon les cultures vivantes devien- nent des authenticités menacées. C’est dans ce cadre qu’il faut considérer nombre de sociétés « non industrielles », « proto - industrielles », « non - urbaines », « traditionnelles ». La multiplicité des possibilités, implicite dans la pléthore de dichotomies des sociétés, pose des problèmes de définition. De plus, pour ce qui est de l’Afrique, la diversité de sa nature complique encore les notions d’intégrité et d’authenticité, sans parler du fait que dans leur propre contexte, ces notions sont à la fois évanescentes et envahissantes. LES IMPLICATIONS DU MODÈLE DE DÉFINITION SUR LES QUESTIONS D’AUTHENTICITÉ ET D’INTÉGRITÉ Le concept d’authenticité présente quatre aspects en rapport avec la Liste du patrimoine mondial. L’authenticité des matériaux Parfois décrite comme « la fidélité à l’objet », la notion d’authenticité des matériaux met l’accent sur les valeurs de la substance physique du bien culturel original. La trai- te des esclaves peut ne pas avoir laissé de traces physiques sous forme de monuments, il est indéniable pourtant que ce phénomène a existé. La réunion commune de I’ICOMOS et du gouvernement espagnol sur les itinéraires culturels en novembre 1994 a défini ces routes du patrimoine comme étant « composées d’élé- ments tangibles dont la signification culturelle dérive d’échanges et d’un dialogue pluridimen- sionnel entre les pays ou les régions ». Au Bénin, la route de l’esclave entre Abomey et Ouidah ne possède pas de témoignages tangibles et serait donc exclue selon cette défini- tion. Selon de nombreuses traditions culturelles vivantes, ce qui fait l’authenticité d’un vestige est moins ce qu’il était (en terme de forme) que ce qu’il a fait. L’authenticité de l’exécution On s’attache ici à garder un témoignage de l’exécution, conformément à la notion que les biens représentent des chefs-d’œuvre du génie créateur humain. Dans les cultures vivantes, c’est la fonction plutôt que les considérations esthétiques qui détermine la présentation et la forme du produit. En dépit de toute sa majesté, le Grand Zimbabwe est une déclaration spirituel- le et politique plutôt qu’un produit du génie créa- teur humain en lui-même. En fait, il est façonné et conçu par un environnement naturel géomor- phologique et constitue une tentative de réponse aux questions existentielles de l’humanité. Le patrimoine bâti n’est donc qu’un signe et peut ne pas avoir de valeur du point de vue de I’exécu- tion. Les communautés locales considèrent
