free festival
that brings daring artists to a large audience. Lausanne
took a gamble 16 years ago when it created a new event,
unique from all the rest but also somehow complementary.
This combination of artistic tests and thirst for discovery is a
great success. The audience is made up of a large number
of enthusiasts, the city of Lausanne has become a hotspot
for experimental European art and the festival has supported
swiss artists who now shine abroad.
challenging the dominant artistic trend and welcoming
the future generation have always been the primary goals
of the “forever innovative” Urbaines. discovering new talents,
developing local projects, putting together different art
forms, breaking habits, and above all sharing with you our
enthusiasm for avant-garde work.
We invite you to be part of this exploration. In a dozen
venues that are eager to host daring projects, we will present
a choice selection of both swiss and international artists,
whose origins and interests vary but whose goals and personal
ambitions are linked. We present more than 40 works, including
performances, interactive installations, shows, exhibitions,
screenings and concerts.
This year’s festival includes amongst others : a major
exhibition that occupies all of Espace Arlaud, in which art
students display their research projects; the opening of the
restored Théâtre Arsenic; and a lot of interactive events
appropriate for all ages—more information about these will
be in the last section of the program.
hope to see you there !
Gilles Jobin, Yan duyvendak, Massimo Furlan, denis Maillefer
ast spring’s special
issue of the arts magazine Mouvement on swiss Art got
it right : for ten years the “swiss Made” label has been alive
in the live arts. It is made up of avant-garde shows whose
artistic languages and forms are diversified. But our european
neighbours seem surprised and ask themselves : what
happened to the land of chocolate ?
Les Urbaines, together with a bunch of local institutions
and festivals that love to take risks, launched and developed
“swiss Made .” The newly restored Théâtre Arsenic, one
of Les Urbaines’ closest collaborator, was part of this. since
its very beginning, Les Urbaines has presented talented
and adventurous artists who have been recognized around
the world. Artists like Gilles Jobin, Yan duyvendak, Massimo
Furlan, denis Maillefer and François Gremaud make
switzerland proud, and they are followed by a new generation
of creators, ready to inherit the journey either by continuing
a tradition or taking another path—breaking through by
developing their own artistic forms. Because the bottom line
is : we want swiss art to be innovative.
Les Urbaines’ programme seeks to reflect a new generation
of artistic projects—coming from switzerland and abroad
—that will lead the way to future aesthetics. so, welcome
to the personal poetic worlds of Pauline curnier Jardin,
Krassen Krastev, Paul dunca and Alma söderberg, to the sincere
and multi-faceted minds of Olivier Marboeuf, Robert
Olivier Marboeuf is a performer, author, art critic and independant
he term “apparatus” is now a standard.
According to Foucault, an apparatus is the system
of relations between laws, institutions, architectural forms,
regulatory decisions, administrative measures, scientific
statements, philosophical, moral and philantropic propositions.
The dispositif is the result of the combination of all these
elements and refers to a specific moment in time which has
two major steps. Firstly, a dispositif is set up to cope with
specific economic, social, political and cultural circumstances.
secondly, the dispositif remains in force beyong its initial
strategic goals, by continuously readjusting its constitutive
elements, in order to deal with predicted and unpredicted
consequences resulted of the system itself.
Zimoun’s huge structures both strictly conceived and
unpredictable, Aldo Mozzini’s strange and surprising pavilion,
Lucas Herzig’s random refluxs, Augustin Rebetez’s rhizomatic
and decadent systems, Uriel Orlow’s architectural
ghosts, or Melodie Mousset’s work on the underlying tension
emerging from images; are good examples of the effects
and gaps more or less predictable, that infiltrate into a ruling
structure’s undetermined areas and manifesting themselves
more or less obviously. As a result, the gaps of the
system appear to be highly ambiguous and emerge –like
ghostly entities- through the various exhibitions and installations
presented in this exhibition, under the title “dispositifs
3-days
festival is a strange yet especially exciting format upon
which to reflect. Its pronounced impermanence led me to
respond in a way that draws forward conditions of intense
attention; here, the presentation of entirely new, site-specific
commissions is a completely natural response. I asked
a number of artists with whom I’ve been working for some
time to reflect upon two of the program’s specificities :
the city of Lausanne and the qualities of an unusual duration…
too short to settle, long enough to make a statement.
Working together with artists who had little previous knowledge
of the city or the festival opened up a space of
shared exploration in which to produce new works sensitive
to a particular place and moment.
The program aims to celebrate collaboration in all its
various manifestations. Extending from the formalised
art collective to unofficial teamwork, a distinct form of togetherness
exteriorises how the very notions of work (together
with its relationship to commodities) and authorship (alongside
notions of distributed information) have evolved in
tandem with society’s shifting use of new technologies.
Each of the artists is attuned to these conditions, and
many of them share a similar upbringing in the UK of the
80’s. Yet, what might at first appear as a network of strong
conceptual affinities becomes more complicated when
one considers the highly disparate formal registers, methodologies,
and references through which their concepts are
expressed. Brought together, their practices invite earnest
debate regarding the means by which art articulates and
disarticulates time and locations… an enquiry that underlies
and inspires the formatting of the program itself.
an we call Les Urbaines’
musical program “arty ?” Yes ! Even though no one would
ever say that Alberto Giacometti’s work is “arty,” it is nevertheless
an appropriate term every now and then for a musician.
Usually music is considered a distant relative of art. But is
music mere recreation, easy to consume ? To put it simply :
we still have the feeling that music is not allowed to be as
innovative as other types of art.
We love daring artists who go off the beaten path,
such as Lexie Mountain who performs vocal shows in some
unexpected corners of the Mudac, Ocelle Mare who plays
with rhythms and harmonies, Anne-James chaton who explores
poetry, or Peter Fengler who uses linguistic and conceptual
tools to expand his musical world.
still, concerts remain the best avenue of expression :
Renée van Trier creates captivating and zany shows, sewn
Leather examines its hatred of the system, Gnod goes into a
trance, Floris Vanhoof summons visuals, acoustics, and
psychology, Grouper plays on (sometimes for 6 hours), and
hype Williams—always covering its tracks—have already
presented a conference instead of a concert.
can we say dada ? Peter Fengler will launch the Bourg’s
he is a musician, performer and visual artist who seeks to
Anne-James chaton is like a human synth, a poet and
performer who presents his verse in a constant, almost
robotic wave. Bills, bus tickets, packs of cigarettes, leaflets—
all of this banal, everyday rubbish is verbalized, repeated,
and rearranged in a chant-like performance that at times
seems mechanical. chaton entered the electronic music
Renée von Trier and herr Warmblüter’s music, under the
dirty drum beats and dark soundscapes. But it’s another
story when they are on stage. Always impertinent, they like
to embody different characters—each with distinct vocal
“Grouper” is an odd fish that dwells in hot water and hides
itself in rugged rocky corners. The same goes for musician
and singer Liz harris’ solo project : it is aquatic, dark, introspective
and warm. Guitars, wah-wah pedals and voices are
amplified, morphing into a mystic entity where nebulous
atmospheres, abstract structures and scratchy sounds merge
into one. An ethereal, ghostly and hypnotizing trip. sublime.
