The prospective study of Keuter (EJVES 2008)
reported that 28% of incident patients with elbow
accesses (autogenous or prosthetic) developed signs
of hand ischemia within 1 year and that 11% required
secondary surgical treatment of the ischemia,
including urgent access ligation.
Similarly, Könner (Kidney Int 2002) reported
an 8.2 % yearly rate of ischemic complications
requiring surgery after construction
of autogenous elbow fistulas.
