Bowles COUVERTURE / COVER This winter edition contains our annual, in-depth feature on the bi-national Great Lakes / St. Lawrence System covering significant developments amongst shipping lines and ports in the region. The great fleet renewal by Canadian carriers is accelerating! In our regular dossier for this issue on an enterprise that is making a difference in the marine industry, we are pleased to offer a special report on Empire Stevedoring, which operates terminals in Eastern Canada and in the United States as far south as Houston. Also, please note that this edition inaugurates the first regular Europe Horizons column by any Canadian publication. It will focus on trade and maritime developments as Canada and the European Union move towards a free trade agreement expected to be ratified by the end of 2015. The cover photo is an extraordinary shot by the photographer on an extremely cold day. It shows the Algoma Equinox, first in a series of eight Equinox Class vessels that will be operated and managed by Algoma Central Corporation, entering the Port of Duluth-Superior on December 11 at the end of her maiden voyage through the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence System. The ship called at the port to load iron ore pellets for Cleveland Cliffs destined for Quebec City. Ce numéro d’hiver renferme notre chronique annuelle sur la voie maritime binationale Grands Lacs–Saint-Laurent. Cette chronique, consacrée à l’actualité concernant les compagnies maritimes et les ports de la région, montre que le renouvellement en profondeur de la flotte marchande canadienne s’accélère! Dans notre dossier habituel sur les entreprises qui font leur marque dans l’industrie maritime, nous avons le plaisir de présenter un reportage spécial sur Empire Stevedoring, qui exploite des terminaux dans l’est du Canada et jusqu’à Houston aux États-Unis. Fait à noter, cette édition contient – et c’est une première pour une publication canadienne − une chronique régulière de nouvelles européennes qui sera consacrée à l’actualité commerciale et maritime, spécialement dans le contexte des progrès vers la ratification de l’accord de libre-échange qui est prévue pour la fin de 2015. La photo de la page couverture est une prise de vue extraordinaire par une journée glaciale. On y voit l’Algoma Equinox, premier d’une série de huit navires Equinox qui seront exploités et gérés par Algoma Central Corporation, pénétrant dans le Port de Duluth-Superior le 11 décembre, au terme de son voyage inaugural dans le réseau Grands Lacs–Saint-Laurent.
