Port Alberni a d’ambitieux
Port Alberni targets big stakes
on West Coast
As the harbor patrol boat powered its way through
the pristine, 40 km long Alberni Inlet on Vancouver
Island in British Columbia, Dave McCormick, Director
of Public Relations and Business Development of the
Port Alberni Port Authority, pointed to several sites in
a land area of 750 hectares earmarked for ambitious
projects on shores completely surrounded by dense rain
forests and rolling hills. The scenery in the remote setting
through the deep, open waters averaging 1.5 kms
in width was nothing if not spectacular. Here was the
universe where big dreams are being hatched to transform
a small port devoted exclusively to handling forest
products – about 1.6 million tonnes annually - into a
mecca for regional shortsea container shipping and for
a liquefied natural gas export facility.
Put in other words, not all the LNG action on British
Columbia’s northwest coast is being occupied by proposed
projects in Prince Rupert and Kitimat stirring the
Several sites in spectacular
for container shortsea shipping
and LNG projects.
Plusieurs emplacements ont
été proposés dans le grandiose
inlet Alberni pour des projets de
transport maritime conteneurisé
courte distance et de GNL.
