JEFF GUESS
Avec From Hand to Mouth (1993), un tirage photographique
With From Hand to Mouth (1993), a photographic print
22 metres long, Jeff Guess presents visitors with an original
visual experience. The spatial mechanism takes the form of
a circular panorama suspended from the ceiling of a dark
room. This unique installation draws viewers into the centre
of the circle. Without a particular point of view that enables
them to take in all of the images as a whole, viewers are
encouraged to circulate, walking through the work.
Statistical Landscape (In the Eye of the Worker) (2004)
ALFREDO JAAR
The Sound of Silence (2006) d’Alfredo Jaar est une cabine
The Sound of Silence (2006) by Alfredo Jaar is a videoprojection
booth. When viewers enter, they are confronted
by a projection addressing the life of a photojournalist
and, more specifically, his most controversial photograph.
The structure of the cubicle places the photograph in
context, and the theatricalization of the presentation
transforms the installation into a space of reflection on
the production of images.
The Spaces of the Image
Over the past thirty years, photography has been integrated
into the field of contemporary art through the work of
numerous artists whose practices bring images together with
scenographic experiences. The 11 th presentation of Le Mois
de la Photo à Montréal will explore the questions of
mechanisms and staging, perceived as essential keys to
reading the different photographic projects presented in
recent years.
Due to the range of possibilities –– the technical diversity
of film and digital cameras, formats, printing procedures,
and the many alternatives offered in terms of museography
and occupation of the space –– photographers are increasingly
called upon to become aware of their relationship with the
exhibition. Production methods and viewing modalities,
as integral parts of projects, exert a direct influence on the
aesthetic of images. Enlargement and monumentalization
of prints, slide projection, in situ conception, the making of
objects and machines, visual and audio mise en scène –– for
each approach there is a corresponding pragmatic use of
display techniques that determines the form and meaning
of the images shown.
of exhibitions attentive to these production conditions and
scenographic issues, offering visitors a fresh approach to works
and a new look at the contemporary art photography scene.
depuis 2003.
Colloquium
Friday, October 2, 2009
Canadian Centre for Architecture, Paul-Desmarais Theatre
In addition to its exhibition programming, Le Mois de
la Photo à Montréal is organizing a colloquium entitled
The Spaces of the Image. This international colloquium,
which will bring together artists, art historians, critics and
exhibition curators, will deal with scenographic procedures
and related issues in the fields of photography and the new
media. The participants will look at means of projection
and the spatial arrangements that have been envisioned for
contemporary practices. Simultaneous translation services
will be provided for the colloquium.
Publication
A new publication is produced for each presentation of the
biennale and is distributed nationally and internationally.
Edited by Gaëlle Morel, the publication for Le Mois de la
Photo à Montréal 2009 entitled, The Spaces of the Image,
will bring together new and original contributions by art
historians and critics interested in the question of scenographic
issues. The publication will also cover the history of projection
as an installation procedure, as well as the history of
photography exhibitions from the 20 th century that have
demonstrated the richness of the spatial solutions. Lavishly
illustrated with works by all of the artists presented in the
event, this 300-page bilingual reference work will retail
for $34.95. It will be available in bookstores and in a number
of exhibition venues as soon as the event starts.
Cultural mediation
In perfect harmony with the exhibitions of Le Mois de la
Photo à Montréal 2009, a program of cultural mediation is
offered to the general public as well as to students. Included
among these activities are guided tours, practical workshops
and artists’ talks. Carried out by a knowledgeable team of
cultural mediators, the activities are adapted to the needs
of the participants in order to familiarize them, in an
engaging and educational way, with issues concerning
to contemporary arts and current artistic practices.
About Us
Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal is an international biennale
of contemporary photography. In 1989, to celebrate the
150 th anniversary of the invention of photography, VOX,
centre de diffusion de la photographie, presented the first
Mois de la Photo à Montréal, which included more than
60 exhibitions as well as a large number of related activities.
This original event was a catalyst, creating a gathering
place, unprecedented in the Montreal and Canadian artistic
community, and served as an inspiration for transforming
Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal into a biennale –– one that,
under the auspices of VOX, produced seven events between
1989 and 2001.
In September 2002, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal became
an autonomous not-for-profit corporation and its charitable
status was obtained in 2006. The change in administration
was accompanied by a shift in the artistic direction: for each
presentation of the event, the appointment of a new Guest
Curator with a new theme lends to each biennale a singular
artistic and theoretical orientation. This artistic formula was
proven successful since the 2003 event.
Oscar Muñoz’s Aliento (1996–2002) is composed of perfectly
polished metallic disks on the surfaces of which are portraits
of political victims made with an oil photo-silkscreen
process. To make the portraits visible, the visitors must
exhale on the surface of each disk. Using pictures extracted
from their original context, the work acts as a visual and
political metaphor exploring the theme of disappearance.
was produced with a telephoto lens that reduces the depth of
field and softens the background. Streuli’s projects involve
unusual modes of exhibition, including the installation of
large prints on glasswall buildings.
