Production of the 300 SL may have ceased in 1963, at which point it entered into automobile legend, but the dream of the perfect Mercedes sports car remained. And although the C111 of 1969 had what it takes, it withdrew from the reach of a willing and well-off potential clientele like the apple from the hand of Tantalus. The SLR McLaren, which was the result of a collaboration with the renowned English motor sports specialist in Woking, was more of a hybrid. Not many people considered it their idea of a “dream car” with the famous three-pointed star. Eventually, the legend returned in the form of the SLS, designed in 2009 and introduced in 2010 to the Grand Prix community and the world—on site and to TV audiences—as the Formula 1 safety car. The idea of a joint venture had not been entirely abandoned: the SLS was developed by AMG in Affalterbach, the first independent product by the Mercedes subsidiary, and built at its works in Sindelfingen. It is a classic that shines with timeless beauty. Even half a century later, it is still something to be proud of, and referencing can’t do any harm—especially if the copyright-holder is doing the copying. The SLS was adapted from the “gullwing” of 1954, and thus the racing SL of two years before. It has the long hood and the passenger cabin right next to the rear axle, the rounded rear end, the broad mouth of the radiator grille adorned with the three-pointed star— but most important of all, it has the spectacular upward-swinging doors. The historic similarities are far from insignificant. Form followed function, as it used to in the “old days.” The doors, for example, were connected to the roof edge, and rise above the sills to provide an entrance height of 17¾ inches. The component parts of the aluminum space frame spread out beneath them, which means that an old problem has reemerged: now, as then, ladies wearing tight skirts find it difficult to sit up and to exit the car in a ladylike fashion—as Heinz-Ulrich Wiedermann, editorin-chief of auto motor und sport, once put it in the 1950s. Furthermore, beneath the seemingly endless front hood a V8 rules in front mid-engine architecture, courtesy of a carbon-reinforced plastic cardan shaft that weighs a mere 8¾ pounds and is connected to the seven-gear dual clutch transmission of the rear axle. The 6.2-liter V8, embedded deeply in the chassis and fed by a dry sump with 3½ gallons of lubricant, weighs a modest 454 pounds. Pressing the red-lettered button on the center console starts up an orgy of power, orchestrated by the impressive V8 rumble. Performance is undoubtedly more than required—the thirsty beast is greedy for revs. It finally releases its 572 bhp at 6800 rpm. But 480 lb-ft underscore this peak with a sturdy foundation, manually by means of a switch on the steering wheel or automatically to the rear. This lends the vehicle a sovereignty that borders on the virtual. Unlike safety car driver Bernd Mayländer, only very few SLS drivers opt for the muted potency of this Mercedes super sports car. As with the clientele for the Roadster version that became available in 2011, this is Nach Produktionsende des 300 SL 1963 und seinem Einzug in den automobilen Mythos bleibt der Traum vom Mercedes-Traumsportwagen.
