ROUSSELIN.Course objectivesThis course provides an introduction to theproblems of knowledge extraction and multicriteriondecisions based on available satelliteimagery, digital maps and open sources on thenet (with an emphasis on data gathered withvirtual globes : Google Earth, ...). It is particularlyfocused on practical applications to the sustainablemanagement of renewable natural resourcesand their political, environmental and economicevaluation (oil & gas and mining investments,water resources, agri-business and environmentalproblems). Based on a real oil exploration casein Chad with strong political, economic andenvironmental issues, the course offers a mixof teaching sessions (offering basics on thevarious techniques involved), presentations of thecase by thematic experts (petroleum geologist,cartographer, geographer, journalist, banker, lender,environmental risk expert, NGO representative...)and labs (practical) including hands-on initiationto remote sensing, data integration techniques,resource economic evaluation, environmentalaccounting and multicriteria mediated decisions.The course is given in English, and has variousgoals:- First, to open the minds of participants to themany facets of geospatial data (with a particular
PROGRAMME DÉTAILLÉ DU CURSUS CHAPITRE 391focus on earth observation from space) and how touse them in decision processes using the wealthof information available on the web ;- Second, to develop a practical experience in waysof extracting useful knowledge regarding naturalresources management using on-line softwarecollaborative techniques;- Last, to understand the complexity of resourcesevaluation and project decisions and themediation of different views using multicriteriadecision analysis, especially in decisions wherethere is no “easy” solution to balance opinionsand conflicts between different socio-economicalactors (oil companies, governments, financialinstitutions, NGOs, local citizens).Case study: Students will have two days of sessionson processing data and solving a practical casein the sustainable development of new oil fields.They will have access to the case history, satelliteimagery and a complete geospatial data base. Theywill have professional software (training versions)for data management and combination and formulti-criterion decision analysis. Students will beorganized in project teams, each team providinganalysis for one party (western oil company;Chinese oil company; local governments; WorldBank; NGOs; ...). COJEAN.ObjectifLe cours comporte deux parties qui font appel àdes connaissances de base dans le domaine dessciences de la Terre, des sciences mécaniques etdes sciences hydrologiques. La première partieprésente les fondements de la géomécaniquedans le cadre de la mécanique des matériauxdéformables. Les caractéristiques de déformabilitéet de résistance des sols et des roches sontétudiées.
