ENGLISH5.10 Using

ENGLISH5.10 Using fireplace during thetransition from winter to springDuring a transitional period with sudden fluctuations intemperature, negative smoke draught or under difficult windconditions, disturbances in the chimney draught may occur sothat the smoke gasses are not drawn out.One should then use less firewood and have a larger opening inthe air vents so that the wood burns fresher and faster. In thiswas the draught in the chimney will be maintained. To avoid accumulated ash, it should be removed more often thanusual. See «6.2 Ash removal».6.0 Maintenance6.1 Cleaning the glassJøtul MF 3 is equipped with an air wash for the glass. Air is suckedin through the air vent above the fireplace and down along theinside of the glass. However, some soot will always stick to the glass, but the quantitywill depend on the local draught conditions and adjustment ofthe air wash vent. Most of the soot layer will normally be burnedoff when the air wash vent is opened all the way and a fire isburning briskly in the fireplace.Good advice! For normal cleaning, moisten a paper towel withwarm water and add some ash from the burn chamber. Rub it overthe glass and then clean the glass with clean water. Dry well. If itis necessary to clean the glass more thoroughly we recommendusing a glass cleaner (follow the instructions on the bottle).6.2 Ash removalJøtul MF 3 is equipped with an outdoor ash pan, which makes iteasy to remove the ashes.• Scrape the ash through the grate in the base plate and intothe ash pan (fig. 7).• Use something like a glove to grab the handle on the ash panand take away the ash. Make sure that the ash pan doesn’t fillup so high that it keeps ash from coming through the grateinto the pan.• Make sure the door to the ash pan is securely shut when thestove is in use.• Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tightfitting lid. Also see the description below about how to handle ash: «3.0Safety precautions».6.3 Cleaning and soot removalSoot deposits may build up on the internal surfaces of thefireplace during use. Soot is a good insulator and will thereforereduce the fireplace’s heat output. If soot deposits accumulatewhen using the product, they can be easily removed by using asoot remover. In order to prevent a water and tar layer from forming in thefireplace you should regularly allow the fire to burn hot in orderto remove the layer. An annual internal cleaning is necessary toget the best heating effect from the product. It is a good idea to dothis in connection with sweeping the chimney and flue pipes.6.4 Sweeping of flue pipes to thechimney• For rear-mounted flue pipes lift the top plate and sweep thepipe through the opening.• For top mounted flue pipes the product can be swept throughthe flue pipe’s sweeping hatch, or the baffle plate must betaken down. See point 7.1 on how to do this.12

ENGLISH6.5 Checking the fireplaceJøtul recommends that you personally check your fireplacecarefully after sweeping/cleaning. Check all visible surfaces forcracks. Also check that all joints are sealed and that the door and topplate gaskets are in the correct position. Any gaskets showingsigns of wear or deformation must be replaced.Thoroughly clean the gasket groove, apply ceramic glue (availablefrom your local Jøtul dealer), and press the gasket well into place. The joint will dry quickly.6.6 Exterior maintenancePainted products may change colour after several years of use. Thesurface should be cleaned and brushed free of any loose particlesbefore new Jøtul stove paint is applied.Enamelled products must only be cleaned with a dry cloth. Do notuse soap and water. Any stains can be removed with a cleaningfluid (e.g. oven cleaner).8.0 Optional equipmentFloor plateA decorative enamel floor plate is available for your Jøtul MF 3 inblue black enamel. The dimensions of the plate are:630 x 759 x 17 mm.Short legs - height 155 mmBlack paint - cat. no. 350173(*only to be used on non combustible floor.) See «2.0 Technialdata»Rear heat shield - cat. no 350319Assembly instruction follows the product.7.0 ServiceWarning! Any unauthorised change to the product is illegal.Only use original spare parts.7.1 Replacing the baffle plate - burn plates- grate - inner bottom (fig. 7)• Remove the ash retainer (fig. 7C).• Lift the baffle plate forward and to the side and edge it outof the door.• Remove the burn plates (fig. 2E).• Remove the ash grate and then lift up and remove the innerbottom plate (fig. 7A and 7B).For re-installation follow the same procedure in reverse order.9.0 Reasons for operationalproblems - troubleshootingPoor draught• Check the length of the chimney so that it covers therequirements stipulated in national laws and regulations. Seealso «2.0 Technical data» and «4.5 Chimney and flue pipe»for information.• Ensure that the minimum cross-section of the chimney is inaccordance with «2.0 Technical data» .• Make sure that there is not anything preventing the fluegasses from escaping: Branches, trees, etc.The fire extinguishes• Make sure that the wood is sufficiently dry• Find out whether there is negative pressure in the house, closemechanical fans and open a window close to the stove• Check that the air vent is open.• Check that the flue outlet is not clogged by sootUnusual amount of soot on the glassSome soot will always stick to the glass, but the quantity dependson:• Humidity of the wood• Local draught conditions• Regulating the air vent. Most of the soot will normally burn off when the air vent isopened all the way and a fire is burning briskly in the fireplace.See also «6.1 Cleaning of glass - good advice»13
