Saint Martin
Fête de la Mer : 10ème !
Métimer a fêté la dixième édition de la Fête
de la Mer les 1er et 2 juin 2019, sur la plage
de Grand-Case, pour le plus grand plaisir du
public. Près de 9 000 tickets ont été vendus
à plus de 2 400 visiteurs, accueillis à bord des
bateaux des opérateurs, mais aussi au départ
des activités nautiques : paddleboard, kayak,
dériveur, jetski, donut, bodyboard électrique…
Records battus! Le samedi matin a été réservé
aux jeunes de Sandy Ground et de Quartier
d’Orléans, qui ont pu avec leurs enseignants
découvrir gratuitement les sports nautiques
non motorisés. L’association a ensuite remis un
chèque de 1 500 euros à l’antenne saint-martinoise
de la SNSM, qui assure chaque année la
sécurité en mer de l’événement. Auparavant,
le 27 novembre 2018, près de 300 jeunes et
leurs accompagnants ont mis le cap sur Tintamare,
à bord des bateaux mis à disposition par
les membres de l’association pour le quatorzième
Sea Discovery Day, qui a permis à tout
ce petit monde de découvrir les bonheurs
du nautisme. Merci à tous, aux opérateurs, à
la préfecture, à la Collectivité, à la Fédération
des industries nautiques, à tous les bénévoles
et à la population !

10th Fête de la Mer
Métimer celebrated the 10th edition of the
Fête de la Mer on June 1 and 2, 2019, on the
beach in Grand-Case, with a huge crowd
happy to attend. Close to 9,000 tickets were
sold to more than 2,400 visitors, who were
welcomed aboard various commercial boats
and took part in different nautical activities:
paddleboard, kayak, dinghy, jet ski, donut,
electric body board… All records were broken!
Saturday morning was reserved for kids from
Sandy Ground and French Quarter, who were
accompanied by their teachers and invited for
free introductions to non-motorized nautical

sports. The association presented a check
for 1,500€ to the Saint Martin SNSM station,
which annually ensures safety at sea during
this event. Previously, on November 27, 2018,
close to 300 kids were accompanied on a trip
to Tintamare, aboard boats made available to
them by members of the association as part of
the 14th Sea Discovery Day, which allowed this
group to discover the joys of boating. Thanks
to all of the companies involved, the prefecture,
the Collectivity, the Federation of Nautical
Activities, all of the volunteers, and the entire
population!

Chers amis plaisanciers, nous sommes heureux
de vous accueillir dans notre archipel,
qui a heureusement retrouvé toutes ses
beautés naturelles après le passage du cyclone
Irma. Encore une fois la nature a repris
ses droits ! Les hommes, eux, travaillent
très dur pour la reconstruction de leur île,
comme vous pourrez le voir dans tous les
quartiers. Tout n’est pas terminé, c’est certain,
mais Saint-Martin avance vers des
lendemains encore plus attractifs qu’auparavant
! De multiples projets émergent. Il
va s’agir de mieux recevoir les visiteurs, de
mieux répondre aux attentes des plaisanciers,
de mieux accueillir les flottes de bateaux
et donc de développer le nautisme à
Saint-Martin. Actuellement, nous regrettons
que nos marinas, qui ont été sévèrement
touchées, ne soient pas toutes opérationnelles.
Mais tous les plaisanciers trouveront
leur bonheur en matière d’approvisionnement,
de carburant, d’équipements et de
compétences de nos équipes techniques.
Sans oublier bien sûr les plages, les restaurants
et la vie nocturne de notre Friendly Island,
réputée et unique parmi les petites îles
de la Caraïbe. Bon vent à vous tous !

Dear Friends,
We are happy to welcome all boat owners
and sailors to our archipelago, which has
recovered all of its natural beauty after the
damage caused by hurricane Irma. Once
again, Mother Nature has come roaring back!
Everyone has worked very hard on the reconstruction
of the island, as you can see in
every different neighborhood. The work is
not totally completed, but Saint Martin is advancing
toward a future that is much more
attractive than the past! Multiple projects are
on the drawing boards so that we can better
welcome our visitors, best meet the needs
of all boaters, and best host various fleets of

boats, all with an eye toward developing the
nautical sector in Saint Martin. At this time, we
regret that our marinas, which were severely
damaged by the hurricane, are not fully operational.
But all boats will find what they need
in terms of provisions, fuel, equipment, and
the outstanding competence of our technical
services. And of course the acclaimed
beaches, restaurants, and nightlife on The
Friendly Island make Saint Martin unique in
the Caribbean. Fair winds to all!

Le Club Nautique de Saint-Martin

«Une catastrophe pour un bien !».
C’est ce qu’a lancé Bulent Gulay,
président de Métimer et à l’origine
de la création du Club nautique de
Saint-Martin, qui a vu le jour grâce à
Irma. En effet, juste après le cyclone,
les membres de Métimer ont été invités
d’honneur au salon nautique de
Paris, au cours duquel une vente aux
enchères de photos de marins a été
organisée en faveur de l’association
par les Ateliers du bout de la cale, pour
un résultat de 7432 euros. Une occasion
en or de créer la base nautique
qui manquait à Saint-Martin. Métimer
a doublé cette somme et fait une
première commande d’équipement :
Open Bic, paddleboards, kayaks, actuellement
stockés à Saint-Martin. Le
club a depuis bénéficié de deux dons.
Un First 21.7 et un Jeanneau Sélection
37, dont la remise en état de naviguer
va être assurée par les élèves de la
section nautique du lycée professionnel.
L’occasion pour eux d’apprendre
à réparer un bateau, ensuite de se former à
la navigation et, qui sait, devenir un jour un
grand régatier. Il ne manque aujourd’hui que

le feu vert de la Collectivité pour installer la
base, mais le club a confiance dans les élus
pour leur infaillible soutien à la jeunesse de

«A catastrophe in disguise!» So exclaims
Bulent Gulay, chairman of Métimer, who had
the idea to create the Nautical Club of Saint
Martin, thanks to hurricane Irma. Right after
the hurricane, the members of Métimer were
guests of honor at the nautical salon in Paris,
during which time photographs of sailors
were sold at auction by the «Ateliers du bout
de la cale» to benefit the association, for a total
of 7,432€. A golden occasion to create a
nautical base that did not exist in Saint Martin,
so Métimer doubled the sum and made it’s
first order of nautical gear: Open Bic, paddleboards
and kayaks, currently stored in Saint
Martin. The club has since received two additional
donations: A First 21.7 and a Jeanneau
Selection 37, and students from the nautical
section at the professional high school will
make sure they are in safe sailing condition.
This is a good opportunity for them to learn
how to repair a boat and train to sail, then who
knows, maybe even become championship
racers. All that is needed now is the green
light from the Collectivité to set up the nautical
base, but the club trusts the local officials
in their infallible support for the kids of Saint
Martin.

Les conditions idéales sont réunies à
Saint-Martin pour les sportifs les plus exigeants
comme pour les débutants, à partir
de sept ans. La Baie Orientale est une base
de départ parfaite pour naviguer entre les îlets
environnants: Caye Verte, Pinel, Petite Clé, Tintamare…
Les eaux calmes de la Baie du Galion
sont idéales pour les débutants, pendant que
les fun boarders vont un peu plus au large,
sauter dans les vagues à l’entrée de la baie,
en bordure du reef, surtout lorsque la force du
vent atteint cinq ou six.

A l’inverse de ce que l’on imagine parfois,
Le kite surf est un sport où l’on se fait
très vite plaisir et qui ne demande ni une
forme olympique ni des biceps d’acier.
D’ailleurs, les filles progressent souvent
plus rapidement que les garçons, tout
simplement parce qu’elles opposent
moins de résistance à la traction de la
voile.
Les équipements modernes ont mis l’accent
sur la sécurité et l’idéal est bien sûr
de prendre quelques cours pour maîtriser
la technique. Les kite surfeurs de
Saint-Martin se retrouvent sur la baie
Nettlé (B52 Kite School), la baie de Culde-Sac
(SXM Kiteschool) et sur la baie

est interdit sur la baie du Galion, par arrêté
préfectoral.

In contrast to what one might think, kite
surfing is a sport that can be learned very
quickly and does not require an Olympic
physique or biceps made of steel. Proof of
this is that girls often make faster progress
than boys, simply because they offer less
resistance to the traction of the sail. Modern
equipment puts an accent on safety, and it
is always best to take a few lessons to master
the technique. Kite surfers in Saint Martin
gather on Nettle Bay (B52 Kite School), Cul
de Sac Bay (SXM Kiteschool), and at Orient
Bay (Wind Adventures). Kite surf is forbidden
in Galion Bay, by order of the Prefecture.

L’innovation technologique au service
des sports de glisse! Il s’agit d’une aile
en carbone montée sous une planche
et qui permet de décoller et voler sur
l’eau! En quelques minutes seulement,
tracté depuis un bateau - un dinghy
équipé d’un moteur de 9,9 cv est suffisant
- vous pourrez facilement contrôler
vos premières sensations de glisse. En 15
minutes, vous commencerez à maitriser
vos premiers vols! Les plus expérimentés
pourront faire des courbes de plus
en plus serrées, passer les vagues et réceptionner
en toeside. Puis vient le kitefoil
pour les kitesurfeurs déjà initiés. Les
sensations de vitesses, de vol et de liberté
sont incroyables. Remonter au vent

devient très simple, même avec peu de
vent. La progression est rapide : environ 2
heures pour être autonome.

Technological innovation has improved
the fun of water sports! Game changers to
the hydrofoil include a carbon wing under
the board, which allows you to take off and
fly across the water! In just a few minutes,
pulled by a boat - a dinghy equipped with
a 9.9 horsepower motor is sufficient - you
can easily control your initial enjoyment of
the wind. In 15 minutes, you will begin to
master your first flights! More experienced
riders can do advanced tricks, dancing on
the waves and perfecting toe-side leverage.
Next comes the kite foil for seasoned
kite surfers. The sensations of speed, flying
and freedom are incredible. Riding upwind
becomes very easy, even in low winds. Your
progression will be rather fast : about two
hours to get going on your own.

Stand Up Paddle
Facile et accessible à tous, le stand-up
paddle est à la mode. Excellent pour les abdos
et les fessiers, ce sport surpasse toutes
les salles de sport, en douceur, sans s’ennuyer
et en pleine nature. Depuis la plage
de la Baie Orientale, avec le club Wind Adventures,
vous pourrez découvrir la côte et
Green Cay. Le club propose aussi de vous
Saint Martin / Sint Maarten
emmener en bateau jusqu’à Tintamare,
pour un retour en paddle dans le sens du
vent et de la mer. Caribbean Paddling loue
des paddles - et des kayaks - au départ de
l’embarcadère de Pinel, et OC4 propose des
excursions vers le Rocher Créole. Au Galion,
avec Windy Reef, vous pourrez tenter le
paddle-surf dans les vagues.

Stand-up paddle is easy and accessible to
everyone. Excellent for those abs and buttocks,
it outdoes any gym. It’s gentle exercise
that you’ll enjoy without getting bored,
plus you’re in the middle of nature. Starting
on the beach in Orient Bay, Wind Adventures

dans le bâtiment de la Police, à l’ouest du
pont dès leur arrivée. Les redevances de
port et de douane s’élèvent à 5$ et 2$ pour
les bateaux jusqu’à 99 tonneaux, 10$ et 5$
de 100 à 499 tonneaux , 20$ et 9$ au-delà

Dawbridges
L’entrée dans le lagon de Simpson Bay est possible
grâce à deux ponts levants, l’un à Sandy
Ground (partie française), gratuit ; l’autre à Simpson
Bay (partie hollandaise), payant (voir tarifs
page 40). Le «Causeway», un troisième pont,
tournant, est situé dans le lagon entre les deux
ponts levants (voir détails page 42).
Un chenal de 2,50 mètres de profondeur existe
entre la partie française et la partie hollandaise
du lagon. Il est impératif de naviguer dans ce
chenal avec la plus grande prudence. Les balises
ne sont pas toutes installées entre le pont
de Sandy Ground et le Causeway, et des épaves
peuvent encore affleurer la surface. Le chenal
est en revanche balisé entre le Causeway et le
pont de Simpson Bay.

The 760 meter bridge that was built in 2013 between the Juliana
Airport and the Bellevue border, on the Dutch side, has reduced
the traffic jams along Simpson Bay. A swing bridge was
incorporated to allow boats to continue crossing the lagoon.

Caribbean Multihull Challenge du 14
au 16 février 2020. Créé en 2019 par le
Sint Maarten Yacht Club, cette course
exclusivement réservée aux multicoques
a connu un succès immédiat.
Heineken Regatta du 5 au 8 mars
2020. Également organisée par le Sint
Maarten Yacht Club, cette régate fête sa
40ème édition. On y accueille tous les
types de voiliers, originaires de 35 pays
du monde.
Saint Barths Bucket Regatta, du 19 au
22 mars 2020. Grand spectacle offert
par une trentaine de somptueux voiliers
de plus de 30,5 mètres de long.
Les Voiles de Saint-Barth, du 12 au 18
avril 2020. On y attend plus de 70 bateaux
parmi les plus beaux du monde
et plus de 1000 marins.
New Year’s Eve Regatta, le 31 décembre
2020. Une régate amicale autour
de Saint-Barth pour terminer l’année
en beauté.

Caribbean Multihull Challenge: February
14-16, 2020. Created in 2019 by the Sint
Maarten Yacht Club, this race exclusively for
multihulls was an immediate success.
Heineken Regatta: March 5-8, 2020. Also
organized by the Sint Maarten Yacht Club,
this regatta celebrates its 40th edition. It is
open to all kinds of sailboats that come from
35 different countries around the world.
Saint Barths Bucket Regatta: March 19-22,
2020. A great nautical spectacle performed
by a fleet of more than 30 magnificent sailboats
over 100 feet in length.
Les Voiles de Saint-Barth: April 12-18: 2020.
More than 70 boats including some of the
best in the world, and over 1000 sailors, are
expected to participate.
New Year’s Eve Regatta: December 31,
2020. An informal parade of sailboats
around the island of Saint Barth closes the
year in a festive spirit.

C’est le mouillage obligé de
tous les bateaux de passage,
et le seul endroit du côté français
de l’île où il est possible
de faire les formalités d’immigration,
à l’arrivée comme au
départ (voir page ??). Les plaisanciers
ont le choix entre le
mouillage et les pontons de
la Marina Fort Louis. Les dinghies
peuvent être amarrés sur
le quai du front de mer, entre
la gare maritime et le marché.
Le mouillage est payant (voir
tarifs page ???). À deux pas du
centre ville, le site est idéal pour
les approvisionnements et les
pleins d’eau et de carburants
(à la marina Fort Louis). Il faut
cinq minutes en canot, par le
chenal d’entrée du lagon, pour
se rendre dans les chantiers de
Sandy Ground et leurs abords,
où sont regroupés un grand
nombre de professionnels du
nautisme très qualifiés. La marina
Port la Royale est à présent
fermée et sa reconstruction
n’est pour le moment qu’en
projet.

Située au centre ville de Marigot et ouverte sur
la mer, la marina a été très touchée par Irma. La
capitainerie a déménagé dans l’immeuble de
la Semsamar, situé juste en face, et reprendra
ses quartiers habituels en 2020. Habituellement
abritée de toutes les conditions de houle, elle a
été endommagée au niveau du quai de fuel, qui
laissera passer la rare houle de nord jusqu’à sa
réparation. Les quais étaient disponibles à 70%
en novembre 2019. La réservation d’une place
se fait par e-mail info@marinafortlouis.com ou
par téléphone : 05 90 77 31 26. Contacter la capitainerie
15 mn avant l’arrivée du bateau (VHF
16). La Marina Fort Louis accueille les yachts
jusqu’à 200 pieds (60 mètres), d’un tirant d’eau
maximum de 11,5 pieds (3,50 mètres). En cas
d’arrivée en dehors des horaires d’ouverture,
les bateaux se mettent à quai à l’emplacement
de leur choix et s’inscrivent dès l’ouverture de
la capitainerie. La marina dispose d’une station
de fuel à très faible teneur en soufre et les quais
sont équipés d’eau et d’électricité aux normes
CE et US (110/220/380 – De 16 à 100 ampères).
Le personnel de la marina est habilité à effectuer
les «clearances» pour les bateaux qui le désirent
(également pour Anguilla). Une connexion internet
par Wifi et un point internet à la capitainerie
sont à la disposition des plaisanciers.

Located in the heart of Marigot, Marina Fort
Louis opens to the sea and was badly hit by hurricane
Irma. The port office has moved into the
Semsamar building, right across the street, and
will move back to its own headquarters in 2020,
by which time the entire marina will have been
renovated. Normally sheltered from all strong
swells, the marina’s fuel dock was damaged, allowing
occasional northern swells into the port
until it is repaired. The docks were 70% operational
as of November 2019. To reserve a berth,
please send an email: info@marinafortlouis.
com or telephone : 05 90 77 31 26. Captains are
requested to contact the marina office 15 minutes
before arrival on VHF channel 16. In case
of arrival outside of the opening hours, boats are
asked to anchor at the berth of their choice and
complete formalities when the office reopens.
A full-time security guard can open the gate for
the crew. The marina can handle boats up to 200’
(60 meters) with a draught of no more than 11,5
feet (3.50 meters). There is a fuel pump with ultra-low
sulfur diesel and the docks are equipped
with water and electricity that meets CE and US
standards (110/220/380 – from 16 to 100 amps).
The marina staff is able to handle in and out clearances
(also for Anguilla). A WiFi Internet connection
is available for boats, as well as an Internet
station in the office.

Friar’s Bay
Assez peu fréquenté, Friar’s Bay est un mouillage agréable et
très calme, et une escale idéale pour déjeuner tranquillement ou
se baigner, à quelques minutes de Marigot. Il est préférable de
mouiller à l’est de la baie pour une meilleure protection. Le nord
de la côte possède un joli site de plongée en apnée. Sur la plage,
il est possible de déjeuner et de louer des chaises longues. Le
départ du sentier d’accès à Happy Bay se trouve à l’extrémité
nord de la plage.

Never very crowded, Friar’s Bay is a peaceful spot to stop for a
quiet lunch or enjoy a swim, just a few minutes from Marigot. It
is advisable to anchor on the east side of the bay, which is more
protected. The north side of the coast is a pretty spot for snorkeling.
On the beach you can rent beach chairs and have lunch.
The beginning of the access path to Happy Bay is found at the
far north end of the beach.

Happy Bay
Ce mouillage peu fréquenté devient vite inconfortable dès que le
vent ou la houle y entre, et il est alors préférable de mouiller sous la
pointe au sud du mouillage. Il n’empêche que la plage, appréciée
des naturistes, est belle et souvent déserte. L’hôtel abandonné sur
les hauteurs du site a été victime du cyclone Luis en 1995, puis du
cyclone Irma en 2017, et n’a pour le moment pas rouvert.

The mooring spot can become quite uncomfortable as soon as there
are sea swells, and it is often better to anchor south of the south foreland.
However, there is a beautiful beach usually deserted other than
a few nudists enjoying the privacy. An abandoned hotel on the hillside
was a victim of hurricane Luis in 1995, then of Irma in 2017, and has
never reopened.

Grand Case

Bien protégée, sauf des rares coups de houle
du nord, la baie de Grand-Case reste le mouillage
le plus pittoresque de Saint-Martin. C’est
l’escale idéale pour le premier ou le dernier
jour d’une croisière entre Saint-Martin, Anguilla
et Saint-Barth. Les plaisanciers amarrent leur
canot sur le plus petit ponton et accèdent au
cœur du village. La vie a repris son cours à
Grand-Case depuis le passage d’irma et l’on
y trouve de très bons restaurants, plusieurs
épiceries et de jolies boutiques de mode
qui bordent la plage et le boulevard. Au crépuscule,
on touche du doigt la magie des
tropiques à Grand-Case, avec des couchers
de soleil souvent spectaculaires. En pleine
saison, le mardi soir, le boulevard qui longe la
mer est interdit à la circulation. Les orchestres
locaux y entraînent un public en liesse, qui se
déhanche au rythme des tambours, des trompettes
ou des guitares.

Well protected, except from the rare north
swell, Grand Case Bay is the most picturesque
anchorage in Saint-Martin. It is the perfect
place to anchor on the first or last day of a
cruise between Marigot and Anguilla. Sailors
can tie up their dinghies at the smaller pontoon
for easy access to the center of the village. Life
is back to normal in Grand Case since the passage
of hurricane Irma and there is no lack of
choice when it comes to the restaurants that
line the beach and the boulevard. One can
also find several grocery stores and fashion
shops. At twilight, Grand Case sparkles with
the magic of the caribbean’s spectacular sunsets.
During the high peak of the winter season,
on Tuesday night, the boulevard that runs
along the waterfront is closed to all traffic, and
local bands get everyone into a good mood,
with hips swaying to the rhythm of drums, trumpets,
or guitars.

plus beaux sites de plongée

les débutants comme pour
les plongeurs confirmés.
Peu profond, accessible et
bien protégé, c’est un site
idéal pour l’initiation à la
plongée et la plongée en
apnée.
Il est interdit de débarquer à terre et d’utiliser un engin
motorisé dans une bande de 30 mètres devant la plage,
ainsi que d’escalader le rocher, où nichent les pélicans et
les fous bruns.

L’un des sites les plus malmenés par l’ouragan
Irma, la marina de l’Anse Marcel reste
ouverte, avec moins de places à quai, et le
chenal d’accès est clair. Appeler la marina
sur le canal VHF 16, puis passer sur le 11. Ou
envoyer un mail de réservation sur capitainerie@ansemarcelmarina.com.
Le personnel
de la marina est habilité à effectuer les
«clearances» pour les bateaux qui le désirent.
L’équipe assiste les bateaux pour leur
mise à quai, afin d’éviter tout incident. Ouverture
tous les jours, de 8h à midi et de 14h
à 18h. La marina dispose d’eau, de bornes
électriques en 110V et 220V (60hz), le wifi est
disponible au bureau. Station de carburants
(diesel et essence) près de la capitainerie. Le
restaurant de plage est ouvert.
Le mouillage, rouleur par houle de nord-est,
est bordé d’une jolie plage. Les vents ayant
tendance à tourner, il est bon de prévoir une
zone d’évitage suffisante. Les bouées de
mouillage appartiennent à des habitués, qui
vous remercient de ne pas les utiliser.

Irma, Anse Marcel marina remains open,
with fewer slips at the dock, but the access
channel is clear. The marina can be
reached on VHF channel 16, then go to 11.

Tintamare
Uniquement fréquenté par les tortues marines,
Tintamare fait partie de la Réserve naturelle
et est totalement protégé.
L’îlot sauvage trouve l’origine de son nom dans
l’espagnol “tinta mare“, couleur de la mer. Un
turquoise d’une cristalline transparence qui
invite au plongeon immédiat, dans le mouillage
situé au sud-ouest, devant la plage de
sable blanc. 17 bouées de mouillage jaunes,
mises en place par la Réserve naturelle, sont à
la disposition des bateaux - jusqu’à 15 mètres
ou jusqu’à 15 tonnes - et limitent la dégradation
des fonds. Les bateaux de moins de 10
mètres sont autorisés à mouiller une ancre,
mais uniquement sur le fond sableux. Un très
joli site de “snorkeling“ est accessible à deux
coups de palmes du mouillage, dans le prolongement
de la pointe nord. Chaussés au
moins d’une paire de tongs, les plus curieux
s’aventureront dans le bush, derrière la plage.
Ils découvriront les carcasses et les moteurs
d’avions abandonnés depuis que les pilotes
et les contrebandiers n’utilisent plus la piste
d’atterrissage, active de 1944 à 1952. La Réserve
naturelle demande aux plaisanciers de
respecter le calme des lieux, seul site de nidification
du noddi brun, un oiseau protégé qui
détruit son nid lorsqu’il est dérangé.

The small island of Pinel with Tintamare in the background
A high spot for marine turtles, Tintamare is
part of Saint Martin’s natural reserve and is
environmentally protected. The name of this
undeveloped little island comes from the
Spanish “tinta mare”. The color of the sea. A
crystal-clear turquoise that you want to dive
into immediately, in the anchorage located
on the southwest of the island, in front of a
beach of soft white sand. 17 permanent yellow
moorings placed at the disposition of boat -
up to 50 feet ou up to 15 tons - by the Réserve
Naturelle help limit damage to coral and plant
beds. Boats under 33 feet are allowed to drop
an anchor, but only on a sandy bottom.
A very pretty site for snorkeling along the length
of the north point is accessible by just a few
flipper strokes. Wearing at least a pair of flipflops,
it is possible for those curious enough
to adventure behind the beach into the scrub.
The landscape includes the hulls and motors
of airplanes abandoned by pilots and those
engaged in contraband when an airstrip here
was active from 1944-1952. The Marine Park
requests that all boats respect the tranquility
of this protected zones, the only nesting place
for the Brown Noddy, an endangered species
of bird who destroys its nest if it is disturbed.

un lieu paradisiaque et très
fréquenté. Fort heureusement,
Pinel redevient une île déserte
à 16h30 chaque jour, après le
départ de la dernière navette.
L’îlot est inclus dans la Réserve
naturelle: la circulation des jetskis
et la pêche y sont donc
interdites. Les bateaux sont
autorisés à mouiller une ancre,
mais uniquement dans le sable.
L’accès à Pinel par bateau est
délicat et doit se faire en empruntant
la passe entre Green
Cay et Pinel.
Depuis l’embarcadère de Culde-Sac,
des navettes desservent
l’îlet Pinel tous les jours
et toutes les 30 minutes, pour
10 euros par passager. Deux
agréables restaurants sont ouverts
pour le déjeuner.

A popular tourist destination,
Pinel Island is a perfect little
paradise, but often overrun
with crowds. Fortunately, tranquility
is restored after 4:30pm
every afternoon when the
last ferry leaves. The island is
included in the Marine Park,
which means that jet skis and
fishing are prohibited. Boats
are allowed to drop an anchor,
but only on a sandy bottom.
Access to Pinel by boat is tricky
and it is a must to use the passage
between Green Cay and
Pinel.
From the embarcadero in
Cul-de-Sac, ferries head to
the small island of Pinel every
30 minutes, for 10 euros per
passenger. Two nice restaurants
are open for lunch.
The village of Cul-de-Sac is

Green Cay
L’intérêt de Green Cay réside surtout dans sa proximité avec la
plage de la Baie Orientale, internationalement connue sous le
nom d’Orient Beach. Le mouillage est inclus dans la Réserve
naturelle et n’est pas particulièrement bien protégé. Il devient
intenable en cas de houle de nord.
Le site de snorkeling, à l’est de Green Cay est superbe. Placé
sous la protection de la Réserve naturelle, la pêche y est interdite,
ce qui permet à la faune comme à la flore de se développer
normalement.

One of most interesting things about Green Cay is its proximity to Orient Bay, and the internationally
known Orient Beach. The mooring zone is within the Natural reserve but becomes
untenable when there are swells from the north.
The snorkeling site just east of Green Cay is superb. Placed under the protection of the
Natural reserve, fishing is forbidden, which allows fauna and flora to develop freely.

Le débarquement en canot sur la plage de la
Baie Orientale - internationalement connue
sous le nom d’Orient Bay - peut être délicat.
Il est possible d’accoster au sud de la plage,
face à l’ancien Club Orient, le spot le plus
proche du mouillage de Green Cay, le plus
facile pour débarquer et remonter son canot
sur la plage. Créé en 1978 par un Néerlandais
conquis par la beauté du site, le site naturiste
du Club Orient a été ravagé par Irma et sa reconstruction
n’est pas à l’ordre du jour.
Depuis le passage d’Irma, les restaurants de
plage de la baie Orientale renaissent l’un après
l’autre et tout est de nouveau prévu pour le
bonheur du touriste: bars, restaurants, boutiques
de vêtements et de souvenirs, et sports
nautiques (planche à voile, Hobie Cat, kite surf,
parachute ascensionnel, jet-skis, «banana
boats»…). Au «Village d’Orient», et plus particulièrement
autour de la place du Village, derrière
la plage, on trouve plusieurs commerces,
dont un petit supermarché très bien achalandé
et un marchand de journaux.
Landing by dinghy on the beach at Orient
Bay (Baie Orientale in French) can be tricky. It
is possible to pull your dinghy onto the beach
at the ex Club Orient, the closest spot to the
anchorage at Green Cay and the easiest place
to get in and out of a boat on the beach. Built
in 1978 by a Dutchman who fell in love with the
beauty of the site, the Club Orient nudist resort
was ravaged by hurricane Irma, and rebuilding
is not on the agenda yet.
Since Irma, the beach restaurants at Orient Bay
are rising from the ashes one by one, with everything
once again in good shape to welcome
back visitors. You’ll find everything you need:
restaurants, clothing stores, souvenir shops,
and water sports (windsurfing, Hobie Cats, kite
surf, parachutes jet-skis, «banana boats»…). In
Orient Village, especially around the central
square of the village behind the beach, you’ll
find several businesses including a small, wellstocked
supermarket, and a newsstand.

Totalement détruite par le cyclone Irma
en septembre 2017, la marina du Captain
Oliver’s n’est toujours pas opérationnelle.
Elle est à vendre, mais un litige entre la
France et les Pays-Bas concernant la délimitation
de la frontière sur ce site complique
la situation. Il est toutefois possible
d’emprunter le chenal, d’accès délicat
mais clair, et de mouiller dans ce trou
à cyclones en veillant à ne pas approcher
l’espace de la marina, où des pieux
sectionnés sont encore immergés. Les
épaves coulées ont en revanche toutes
été sorties de l’eau. À quelques minutes
de marche, dans le petit village, on trouve
une épicerie moderne et bien achalandée,
ainsi que plusieurs restaurants de
bonne réputation.

is still not rebuilt. It is for sale, but the situation
is complicated due to legal issues
between France and The Netherlands
concerning the exact location of the border.
It is possible to navigate the channel,
where access is tricky but clear, and to
anchor in this hurricale hole if careful not
to get too close to the marina area, where
broken pilings are still submerged. On the
other hands all the sunken wrecks have
been taken out of the water. It’s just a
short walk to the small village that has a
modern well-stocked grocery store and
several restaurants with good reputation.

Great Bay – Philipsburg
Sint Maarten
Hormis si vous souhaitez avoir un accès direct
aux commerces de Front Street, à Philipsburg,
le mouillage de Great Bay, souvent rouleur,
n’est pas une obligation. Il est toutefois possible
de s’y ravitailler en carburant et en eau
à Bobby’s Marina et d’y faire les courses du
bord. Le chantier situé à côté, équipé d’un
Travelift de 88 tonnes, effectue la plupart des
travaux de réparation et d’entretien. Si vous
entrez ou sortez du côté hollandais de l’île,
n’oubliez pas de faire la “clearance“, au bureau
de l’immigration, à l’entrée du port de commerce.
Bureau ouvert du lundi au vendredi
de 8h à 17h30 et le week-end de 8h à 12h. Il
est possible de faire les formalités de départ
à l’avance. Philipsburg s’est équipé de quais
pour recevoir les plus grands paquebots
du monde. Certains jours, cinq ou six de ces
géants des mers sont à quai, ou au mouillage
dans la baie, et débarquent plus de 15.000
croisiéristes sur l’île.

Except if you want direct access to the shops
along Front Street in Philipsburg, mooring
in Great Bay, which can be choppy, is not an
obligation. But there are lots of options for refueling
and watering at Bobby’s Marina. The
boat yard next to the marina is equipped with
an 88 ton Travelift that is used for repairs and
maintenance. If you enter or leave the Dutch
side of the island by boat, don’t forget that the
Immigration Department and the Clearance
office must clear all boats. In Great Bay, the Immigration
office is located just at the entrance
to the port. The Clearance Office is open from
8:00am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, and
from 8:00am-12:00pm Saturday and Sunday.
It is closed on public holidays. Paperwork can
be done in advance of departure. Philipsburg
has a large enough dock to host the world’s
largest cruise ships. Certain days, there may
be as many as five or six of these “giants of the
sea,” in port, or anchored in the bay, delivering
as many as 15,000 passengers to the islands.

des trois axes forts que sont l’amélioration
des connaissances, l’aménagement

Réserve naturelle. Nos agents, ainsi que les

Créée en 1998, la Réserve naturelle nationale
de Saint-Martin s’étend sur 3 060 hectares, au
nord-est de la partie française.
La partie marine de la Réserve, d’une superficie

Created in 1998, the Réserve Naturelle Nationale
(National Nature Reserve) of Saint Martin
covers over 3,060 hectares (7,500 acres) in the
North-Eastern part of the French side of the island.
The marine zone of the Réserve, which comprises
2,900 hectares (7,000 acres), is situated
on a plateau that extends between the islands
of Anguilla, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy.
Saint Martin’s wealth of ecosystems includes
mangroves, underwater plant nurseries, coral
reefs, coastal forests and salt ponds, which
means that the Réserve Naturelle shelters a
diversified collection of terrestrial and marine
flora and fauna, including numerous protected
species.
The three primary missions of the Réserve Naturelle are as follows:

To maintain the biodiversity and the ecological functionality of the protected sites, the management
must safeguard the health of the ecosystems.
Protection
The natural settings within the Réserve are subject to legal protection, comprising a series
of regulations adapted to the local context and environmental challenges.

Discovery
Depuis le passage en 2017 du cyclone
Irma, seul le sentier des Froussards attend
les randonneurs et les invite à découvrir
la forêt sèche, l’un des quatre
grands écosystèmes de la Réserve naturelle,
les trois autres étant la mangrove, la
végétation littorale et les fonds marins. Il
faudra attendre leur prochaine remise en
état pour pouvoir parcourir à nouveau le
sentier en bois sur pilotis de l’étang de la
Barrière ainsi que le sentier pédestre et le
sentier sous-marin de l’îlet Pinel.

Since hurricane Irma hit the island in 2017,
only Froussards Path is open to hikers, inviting
them to discover the dry tropical forest,
one of the four major ecosytems in the Réserve
Naturelle ; the other three being the
mangrove, the coastal vegetation, and the

Cayes, on parcourt en deux heures et
demie les 4,5 kilomètres du sentier des
Froussards, dernier massif forestier littoral
intact de l’île. Le sentier passe par la plage
déserte de Petites Cayes, où il est possible

très bien protégés – ils sont bénéficiaires d’un
arrêté de protection de biotope pour l’enjeu
avifaune et même inscrits depuis 2012 à

soumis à bien des pressions et bien des menaces
: dépôts de remblais, déversements de
déchets, rejets d’effluents d’assainissement
non traités, défrichements sauvages de mangrove…

Located at the intersection of the sea and
the land, the salt ponds and their mangroves
shelter 85 species of birds, of which 55 are

heavy rains, protect the shoreline, settle sediment

à leurs occupants de descendre à terre afin de protéger le noddi brun, qui peut détruire son

Quatre observatoires permettaient de mieux
découvrir les oiseaux avant le passage du cyclone
Irma, qui les a hélas détruits en 2017. Leur
reconstruction est prévue, sur l’étang du cimetière
de Grand-Case, l’étang de la Barrière à Culde-Sac,
l’étang de Chevrise à Mont Vernon et la
mare Lucas à Oyster Pond. Mais il est toujours
possible d’observer les oiseaux aux abords de
tous les étangs, l’idéal étant de s’équiper d’une
paire de jumelles... Et d’un appareil photo!

It is possible to observe several of the 85 species of birds found in Saint Martin —including the great
egret, the snowy egret, the red-tailed tropicbird, the bridled tern, the Herminier puffin, the little tern,
and of course the pelican — and they can be seen primarily near the island’s salt ponds.
Important notice: at Tintamare, boats are prohibited from anchoring in the bay of North Cove,
and passengers are not permitted to go ashore, as this is a reproduction zone for the brown
noddy, that might destroy their nests if disturbed.
Four observatories that offered great bird
watching before hurricane Irma hit the island
were sadly destroyed in 2017. Their reconstruction
is on the drawing boards for sites at the Cemetery
pond in Grand-Case, Barrière pond in
Cul-de-Sac, Chevrise pond in Mont Vernon, and
Lucas marsh in Oyster Pond. In the meantime, it
is still possible to observe the birds that visit all
of these ponds. It is best to take a pair of binoculars…
and a camera!

La Réserve assure un suivi des pontes des tortues marines
– tortues vertes, imbriquées et luth – avec l’aide
d’une trentaine d’écovolontaires, chargés de relever les
traces laissées par les tortues dans le sable lorsqu’elles
viennent déposer leurs oeufs sur les plages. Toute
source de dérangement survenant lors de la saison de
ponte (mars à octobre) peut pousser ces reptiles protégés
à faire demi-tour et donc à ne pas venir pondre sur
nos plages, menaçant par la même occasion la survie
de ces espèces fragiles. En mer, les tortues vertes ou
imbriquées peuvent être observées toute l’année en
plongée, le plus souvent sur des fonds rocheux de 3 à
15 mètres. Elles sont très présentes à Tintamare, où les
baigneurs resteront à au moins 10 mètres de l’animal. Il
est interdit de les toucher et de les poursuivre.
Sea Turtles
La Réserve ensures the study of marine turtle egg
laying habits – leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea
turtles – with the help of 30 eco-volunteers who make
note of the tracks left in the sand by the turtles when
they come onto the beach to lay their eggs. Any sort of
disturbance during the egg-laying season (March-October)
can cause these protected turtles to make a
U-turn and not lay their eggs on our beaches, making
these fragile species even more endangered than before.
Divers can observe green turtles and hawksbill
turtles all year, most frequently on rocky bottoms from
10 to 50 feet deep. Sea turtles are found close to the
shores of Tintamare, where swimmers must keep a
distance of 30 feet from these marine animals. It is forbidden
to touch or follow them.

The Réserve does a scientific study of the
ocean’s depths since 2007. Underwater
plant beds provide a nursery for numerous
species and offer them protection and food.

ecosystem, that plays a determining role in

the purification of coastal waters. The coral
reefs protect the coast from swells. The coral
also serves as a habitat for thousands of species—for
food, hunting grounds, refuge and
nurseries.
Boat anchors pull up underwater plants
and damage the coral, while chains
destroy them all along the length of the
links, and it takes decades for some of
these species to recover and regenerate.
It is essential for boats to use the
mooring buoys put at their disposal or
drop their anchors in sandy areas only.
It is forbidden to break or damage the
reefs with fins.
Fishing is prohibited in the entire Réserve Naturelle, as well as removal
of anything animal or vegetal.

Since hurricane Irma, the Réserve has been working
hard to repair materials destroyed and to
rehabilitate the impacted ecosystems. Part of the
process is the establishment of a mangrove nursery,
with an eye toward replanting 100,000 shoots
in the salt ponds where the mangrove was decimated.

Navigation and Diving
The Réserve Naturelle Nationale of Saint
Martin works closely with the island’s socio-economic
environment: the discovery of
protected zones and sites is allowed. Tour
operators who partner with the Réserve
Naturelle organize sailboat excursions to
Tintamare, among others, throughout the
year. The island’s dive clubs have all signed a
partnership agreement with the Réserve Naturelle,
which in term authorizes them to dive
at sites that they manage, especially Creole
Rock. The goal of this partnership, which defines
the obligations and engagement of the
divers, comprises an optimal protection of

Originaire de l’Océan Pacifique et de l’Océan Indien, le poisson lion (Pterois volitans) est une
espèce invasive, introduite accidentellement dans la mer des Caraïbes. Très vorace et sans
prédateur local, il constitue une menace pour nos récifs et nos poissons.
Que faire à la vue de ce poisson
• Ne le manipulez et ne l’effrayez pas. Sa piqûre est douloureuse et peut provoquer un état de choc
nécessitant une assistance médicale.
• Localisez le site.
• Si le poisson se trouve dans les eaux de la Réserve, merci d’informer la Réserve au 06 90 34 77 10.
Dans la Réserve, seuls les gardes sont autorisés à chasser le poisson-lion. En dehors de la Réserve,
les poissons peuvent être tués et coupés en deux, afin qu’ils nourrissent d’autres espèces et que
d’éventuels prédateurs prennent goût à cette nouvelle chair et commencent ainsi à le chasser.

Lion Fish
Originally from Pacific and Indian Oceans, the lion fish is an invasive specie, introduced accidentally
in the Caribbean. Very greedy and without local predator, the lion fish is a threat to our
reefs and fish.
When you see this fish
• Do not touch or frighten it. Its very painful sting can cause shock and need medical assistance.
• Localise the site.
• If you spotted the fish inside the Réserve, thank you for contacting the Réserve on 06 90 34 77 10.
Inside the Reserve, only the rangers are authorized to fish the specie. Outside the Reserve, the
lion fish may be killed and cut in two, so that other fish will feed upon it, and eventual predators
will acquire a taste for its flesh and begin to catch it.

Il est possible de se rendre à Anguilla par la mer en
petit ferry, depuis la gare maritime de Marigot (sur le
front de mer) et jusqu’au débarcadère de Blowing
Point, où l’on peut louer une voiture, si l’on n’a pas fait
de réservation avant le départ. Le service est fiable
et la traversée ne dure qu’une vingtaine de minutes.
L’enregistrement a lieu à la gare maritime, où l’on
doit s’acquitter d’une taxe de 3 euros. On paye son
ticket à bord : 20 dollars l’aller simple (enfants de 2 à
6 ans : 10 dollars). Même procédure au retour avec
le paiement d’une taxe de 8 dollars à Anguilla. À l’arrivée,
des taxis attendent les voyageurs, mais il est
plus économique de louer une voiture. La conduite
est à gauche et la circulation très fluide, sur des
routes en bon état. Ne pas oublier son passeport !

You can arrive in Anguilla by sea, by taking a
small ferry from the sea terminal in Marigot
(on the waterfront) right to the dock in Blowing
Point, where you can rent a car, if you did not
make a reservation in advance. The ferry service
is reliable and the crossing only takes
about 20 minutes. Reserve your place at the
terminal, where you will pay a tax of 3 euros.
Tickets are purchased once onboard: 20 dollars
one-way (children 2 to 6 years old: 10 dollars).
The same procedure is in effect for the
return trip but the departure tax in Anguilla is
8 dollars. Taxis are available at the terminal,
but it is cheaper to rent a car. Driving is on the
left, the roads are in a good state and there
are no traffic jams. Please do not forget your
passport!

plage, regroupe les services de
douane et d’immigration. Ce bureau
est ouvert tous les jours, de
8h30 à midi et de 13h à 16h. Les
skippers doivent présenter les
papiers du bateau et les passeports
de tous les passagers. Une
taxe d’entrée de 5 US$ est appliquée
à chaque personne à bord,
plus une taxe de 3US$ pour les
passagers seulement (pas l’équipage).
La veille VHF se fait sur le
canal 16, aux heures d’ouverture

à savoir: il est interdit
aux bateaux de passer la nuit au
mouillage à Anguilla ailleurs qu’à

Road Bay, bordered by the beach
at Sandy Ground, is a “must” for all
boats and yachts stopping in Anguilla,
as this is the place to take
care of all entry and departure
formalities and to get a cruising
permit, necessary to visit the other
anchorages (see previous page).
The “marine base,” on the edge
of the beach, combines customs

Little Bay
À la pointe nord de Crocus Bay, Little Bay est
un mouillage de charme. Protégée par son
statut de Marine Park, la baie est équipée
de corps-morts et il est formellement interdit
d’y mouiller l’ancre, comme d’y passer la
nuit. Les falaises ocre tombant à pic dans la
mer constituent un site de snorkeling et de
découverte remarquable. Si les poissons
abondent sous l’eau, les oiseaux marins, et
surtout les pélicans, s’adonnent à des parties
de pêche impressionnantes. Il est possible
d’aller mouiller l’ancre pour la nuit juste
à côté, à Crocus Bay, l’un des deux seuls
mouillages où il est possible de passer la nuit
à Anguilla, l’autre étant Road Bay. Le ponton
en bois appartient au restaurant Da Vida, qui
le met à disposition des plaisanciers. Cet
établissement propose une cuisine novatrice
et délicieuse, où l’Asie et la Caraïbe se
rejoignent.

Crocus Bay
At the north point of Crocus Bay, Little Bay
is an anchorage with special characteristics.
Protected by its status as a Marine Park, the
bay is equipped with mooring buoys, and it
is prohibited to anchor on the bottom, as it is
to spend the night here. Ocher cliffs that drop
straight into the water create a remarkably interesting
snorkeling site. There are often entire
schools of fish, which make it a good feeding
ground for marine birds, and especially
pelicans. It is possible to drop the anchor at
Crocus Bay, one of the only two moorings
in Anguilla where it is possible to spend the
night, the other being Road Bay. The wooden
pontoon belongs to Da Vida restaurant,
which allows boats to use it for free. They
serve delicious, innovative cuisine in a fusion
of Asia and the Caribbean.

Easily recognizable from the beach in Road
Bay, Sandy Island is a private island where
visitors are welcome, as long as they respect
the environment. A zone for anchoring
was defined by the Marine Park and equipped
with buoys. In case buoys are missing,
anchor in the sand. It is better to approach
Sandy Island in good daylight, as there are
many coral outcroppings close to the surface.
Ashore, a charming bar and restaurant
serves rum drinks and prepares fresh
lobsters and fish, caught the same day by
the anguillian fishermen. No boat ? Take
the sea shuttles from the pier next to the
Marine Base on Road Bay (Sandy Ground).

Shoal Bay East
La plage de Shoal Bay East – à ne pas
confondre avec Shoal Bay West – est
classée parmi les dix plus belles plages
du monde. L’eau y est idéalement turquoise
et le sable, très fin et très blanc,
se déroule sur près de deux kilomètres.
La baie est classée en Marine Park et
donc totalement protégée. La pêche y
est interdite, les fonds coralliens sont
magnifiques et très facilement accessibles.
Pour les bateaux à moteur, il existe un
chenal d’accès au milieu des récifs, d’une
profondeur de 1,80 mètre, exclusivement
réservé aux habitués.

The beach at Shoal Bay East – which should
not be confused with Shoal Bay West – ranks
among the ten most beautiful beaches in the
world. The water is pure turquoise and the
powder white sand stretches for almost two
kilometers. The bay is classed as a Marine
Park and therefore is fully protected. It is forbidden
to fish there, the coral reef is magnificent
and easily accessible. For motorboats
there is a 1,8 meter channel in the middle of
the reef, reserved exclusively for those who
know it.

Prickly Pear
Le lagon de Prickly Pear East colle si parfaitement
à l’image du paradis terrestre
qu’il peut parfois être un peu trop fréquenté
par les catamarans de day charter,
seuls autorisés à utiliser le mouillage.
Les autres bateaux devront prendre l’une
des bouées placées au sud de Prickly
Pear East par le Marine Park, et utiliser
Anguilla
leur canot pour contourner la pointe et
entrer dans le lagon. La longue barrière
de corail de Seal Island abrite des myriades
de poissons multicolores, dans un
courant souvent assez fort. Rappelons
que Prickly Pear fait partie du Marine Park
et qu’il est interdit d’y passer la nuit. Restaurant

Prickly Pear East lagoon is the perfect image
of paradise on earth, yet there are days when
there are too many day charter catamarans,
only boats to be allowed to use this anchorage.
Other boaters will use one of the
moorings provided by the Marine Park, in the
lee of Prickly Pear East, and enter the lagoon
with their dinghy.
Myriads of multi-colored fish can be found
near the long coral reef of Seal Island, where
the current can be quite strong. Remember
that Prickly Pear is a Marine Park, and it is forbidden

d’une longue plage de sable fin, mais
il semble que la tolérance soit de mise.
Il faut toutefois veiller à déposer l’ancre
sur fond de sable blanc, assez près de
la plage, et non dans l’herbier, afin de ne
pas porter atteinte à la flore et à la faune,
et tout particulièrement aux lambis, dont
l’espèce est protégée. Rendezvous Bay
est réputée pour son bar restaurant de
plage, le Dune Preserve (vers le milieu
de la plage), et l’un de ses propriétaires,
le chanteur Bankie Banx, parfois appelé

It is officially forbidden to anchor in this magnificent
bay with its long, fine sand beach,
but it appears as if some tolerance is allowed.
Yet it is always important to anchor on the
sandy bottom closer to the beach, and never
in the underwater plant beds so as not
to cause damage to the flora and fauna, and
especially the
conch—a protected species. Rendezvous
Bay is known for its beach bar/restaurant,
the Dune Preserve (approximately half way
on the beach), and one of its owners, reggae
singer Bankie Banx, sometimes referred to as

Clearing in and out must be done at the harbor of
Gustavia, and only there. All captains must furnish
the papers for the boat, as well as the passports
for all persons aboard. Forty-five minutes before
arriving at the entry channel to the port, skippers
are required to call the harbor office on VHF
channel 12 to announce their arrival. The port offices
are open from 7:00am to 6:pm daily (tel. : 05

clearance. Several areas of Saint-Barts, like Ile
Fourche and Anse de Colombier, are included in

d’entrée. Une taxe de mouillage est applicable à
tous les bateaux, selon leur longueur, et leur largeur
pour les multicoques. L’accès aux douches,
le ramassage des ordures et le wifi sont inclus
dans cette taxe (prière de trier le verre, l’aluminium
et les déchets ménagers). À noter: tout
mouvement du bateau dans le port, même un
changement de mouillage, doit être signalé à la
capitainerie. La vitesse est limitée à 5 nœuds. Un
point d’eau permet de faire le plein sur le quai du
Général de Gaulle, du lundi au samedi, de 7h30
à 17h30. Il est possible de faire le plein de gasoil,
d’essence et d’eau potable au quai du port
de commerce, à Public, du lundi au vendredi de
7h30 à 16h00, le samedi de 7h00 à 11h00.

Boats have three possible options when arriving
in Gustavia : ask a berth at the dock, tie up
to a mooring in the inner harbor, or anchor outside
the harbor. It is forbidden to anchor in the
fairway. Mooring fees are collected for all boats,
according to their length, as well as their beam
for multihulls. Access to showers, trash collection
and wifi are included in these fees (please sort
glass, aluminum and household waste). Please
note: all maneuvers in the port, even a change
of mooring, must be
indicated at the harbor office. The speed limit
inside the harbor is 5 knots. It is possible to get
fresh water on the dock in Gustavia, Monday to
Saturday, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. It is possible
for the boats to refuel, buy gasoline and fill their
water tanks at the commercial harbour, in Public,
Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 4:00 pm, and from
7:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday.

Colombier
Accessible pour les terriens par un raidillon et
quinze minutes de marche, la plage de Colombier
est très peu fréquentée, sinon par les occupants
des bateaux. La baie est incluse dans le
territoire de la Réserve naturelle marine et des
corps-morts réglementés sont à la disposition
des plaisanciers. La chasse sous-marine y est interdite
et la pêche réglementée, ce qui a permis

averti a de grandes chances de repérer
la tête d’une tortue venue aspirer son bol d’air
avant de retourner sous l’eau. Des rémoras, des

comme au nord, les récifs sous-marins méritent
une visite avec palmes, masque et tuba.

Accessible by foot via a 15-minute hike along a
rocky path, the beach at Colombier is not very
crowded, and is a popular spot for sailboats. The
bay is one of the zones protected by the Marine
Park, and moorings are in place to avoid disturbing
the ocean bottom. Underwater fishing is
prohibited, which has allowed the marine fish
population to flourish.
If you watch closely you might see a sea
turtle lift his head for a breath of air before diving
back under water, while a remora, barracuda, or
tarpon might be hiding in the shade of your hull.
Throughout the bay, there are spots worth visiting
with a snorkel, flippers, and mask.

La Réserve naturelle
Fondée en 1996, la Réserve naturelle de Saint-Barthélemy se repartie en cinq zones autour
de l’île.
Cette protection a contribué à la conservation d’une belle population de tortues vertes dans
les eaux de Saint-Barthélemy, et privilégie aussi la rencontre d’autres espèces menacées
dans d’autres îles, tels les requins et les raies léopard.
Des mouillages sont à la disposition des visiteurs. Ils protègent les récifs et herbiers dans
les sites de plongée, les baies de Colombier et Fourchue. A noter, seules ces deux baies
proposent partiellement des zones d’ancrage, partout ailleurs en réserve cette pratique est
interdite.

The Marine Park
Saint-Barthélemy
Founded in 1996, the Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Barthélemy is divided into five zones
around the island.
These protected areas have led to an increased population of green sea turtles in the waters
around Saint Barthélemy, and ensure the survival of other species, such as sharks and leopard
rays, that are threatened on other islands.
Moorings are available for visiting boats. These moorings protect the coral reefs and underwater
plant beds at diving sites, as well as in the bays of Colombier and Fourchue. In fact,
these are the only two bays within the Réserve that allow any anchoring; elsewhere in the
protected waters, this practice is prohibited.

Saint-Jean
Accessible par beau temps et en l’absence de
vent fort -surtout de nord-est- la baie de Saint-
Jean est partiellement interdite au mouillage en
raison de la proximité de l’aéroport, sauf si l’on ne
franchit pas la barrière de corail, à 150 mètres du
rivage. C’est un mouillage sympathique et très
civilisé, rythmé par le ballet des petits avions
décollant de l’aéroport. La plage, appréciée des
touristes pour le calme de ses eaux, est dominée
par le mythique hôtel Eden Roc. Les restaurants
et les commerces de la baie de Saint-Jean
sont tout proches de la plage, accessible avec
l’annexe. On trouve tout à Saint-Jean: du supermarché
à la boutique de mode, en passant par
la pharmacie, le traiteur et l’agence de voyages.

Accessible by boat in good weather, and in the
absence of strong winds —especially from the
northeast— the bay of Saint Jean, because of the
proximity of the airport, is off limits for mooring
of all habitable boats unless you stay outside of
the coral reef (the legal limit is 150 meters from
the coast). It is a charming bay that vibrates to the
rhythm of the small planes taking off from the
airstrip that ends right at the beach. The mythic
Eden Roc Hotel dominates
the beach, which is popular with many
tourists for the calmness of the water. Numerous
restaurants and boutiques are close to the
beach, which is accessible by dinghy. The village
of Saint Jean also has everything from a supermarket
to haute couture, by way of a drugstore, a
travel agent, and gourmet food to go.

Anse des Galets
L’Anse des Galets, qui abrite la plage de Shell
Beach, est rapidement accessible depuis Gustavia.
Le mouillage n’y est pas très protégé et
constitue surtout, par beau temps, un bon arrêt
déjeuner. La plage, toute proche du centre de
Gustavia, a perdu une bonne partie des petits

coquillages qui la recouvraient et auxquels
elle doit son nom. Attention : l’ancrage est strictement
interdit dans la zone d’atterrissage du
câble sous-marin de télécommunication au
niveau de la plage de Shell Beach. Cette zone
est délimitée par six bouées de signalisation.

Shell Beach
Shell Beach (Anse des Galets) is located a short
walking distance from the center of Gustavia. It
owes its name to the thousands of small shells
that were deposited on the beach when the
Port of Gustavia was dredged many years ago,
but many of these shells were washed away in
recent hurricanes.
Anchoring here is generally calm, and especially
in good weather provides a nice spot to
stop for lunch. But it is important to note that
mooring is strictly forbidden in the zone where
a major underwater telecommunications
cable arrives on Shell Beach. Six signalization
buoys define the limits of this zone.

Saint-Barthélemy
Fourchue
Inhabitée et hérissée de cactus, l’île Fourchue
-dite aussi Fourche- est un mouillage bien
abrité. Ses eaux bleu foncé et les collines
arides qui viennent s’y noyer composent un
paysage inhabituel dans la région. La partie
marine de l’îlot fait partie intégrante de la
Réserve naturelle marine de Saint-Barthélemy
et des bouées de mouillage sont à la
disposition des bateaux. La chasse sous-marine
y est interdite, la pêche réglementée
et les fonds sous-marins très beaux. C’est
une escale parfaite pour déjeuner tranquillement

Adorned with thorny cactus, Fourchue Island
— also known as Fourche— has a nicely
sheltered mooring. The deep blue water and
dry hillsides that drop straight into the surf
make for an unusual Caribbean landscape.
The marine part of the small island is in an
area protected by the Saint Barth Marine Park
and its mooring buoys are available to visiting
boats. Spearfishing is forbidden, fishing regulated
and snorkeling beautiful. Fourchue is
the perfect spot to stop and have a peaceful
lunch and enjoy a siesta or a swim en route
from Saint Martin to Saint Barth. It is possible
to go up onto the little beach located to the
east of the anchorage and hike to the summit
of the island —which is private property— and
be rewarded by a beautiful panoramic view.

Les anses de Grande Saline et de
Gouverneur sont probablement les
deux plus magnifiques plages de
Saint-Barth. Ce ne sont en revanche
pas des mouillages abrités, et il n’est
possible d’y venir en bateau que par
temps calme ou par vent de sud-est,
et pour quelques heures seulement.
Dans tous les cas, il vaut mieux être
vigilant en utilisant l’annexe pour débarquer.
La houle se renforçant en
approchant du rivage, il est conseillé
de mouiller l’ancre à bonne distance
de la côte. Le naturisme est interdit
à Saint-Barth, mais cela n’effraie pas
les nudistes, qui ont choisi de s’installer
discrètement aux deux extrémités
de la plage de Grande Saline.
The bays of Grande Saline and Gouverneur
are considered by many to
have the most beautiful beaches in
Saint Barth. Yet neither one offers
sheltered mooring, and it is only
possible to anchor when the water
is calm or the wind is from the southeast,
and for several hours at best.
At all times, one must be extremely
prudent if using a dinghy as the currents
get stronger near the beach. It is
advised to anchor at a safe distance
from the shore. Nude sunbathing is
not legal in Saint Barth, but that does
not deter determined nudists who
have taken over both far ends of Saline
beach.

Saba appeared when a small piece of the
bottom of the Caribbean Sea was raised
up by a volcano to the height of 877 meters
above sea level. Thousands of years
of utter peace and quiet plus the islands
fertile soil have resulted in its lush, tropical
vegetation.

THE Road
En 1938, en dépit des mises en garde de plusieurs ingénieurs européens qui estimaient
la mission impossible, Josephus Lambert Hassell prend des cours par correspondance et
construit la seule route de l’île, avec l’aide des habitants. En 1943, le premier tronçon de «la
route qui ne pouvait pas être construite» est ouvert, entre le port de Fort Bay et The Bottom.
Mais il faudra attendre 1947 pour voir la première voiture emprunter «The Road» et 1958 pour
qu’elle relie le port à l’aéroport.
In 1938, despite warnings from
several European engineers who
believed it was an impossible task,
Josephus Lambert Hassell took

courses and built the only road
on the island with the help of the
locals. In 1943, the first section of
«the road that could not be built»
was completed between Fort Bay
and The Bottom. However, it was
only in 1947 that the first car actually
drove on «The Road» and 1958

The first small houses of Saba were built thanks to
the rich ship-owners, who brought goods ashore
with the help of small rowing boats and then hauled
them up the slopes by sheer manpower. The traditional
style of the cottages has been preserved up
to this day : wooden walls painted white, red roof,
green shutters and an underground cistern next to
the house.

Depuis Saint-Martin, il est possible d’aller à Saba
en bateau ou en avion. Au départ de la marina
Chesterfield’s, à Philipsburg, le ferry Dawn II dessert
le port de Saba trois fois par semaine, le mardi,
le jeudi et le samedi. Départ de Philipsburg à
16h30. Départ de Saba le mardi, le jeudi et le samedi
à 7h00. Le Ferry Edge, depuis Pelican Marina,
à Simpson Bay, dessert Saba le mercredi, le
vendredi et le dimanche. Départ de Saint-Martin
à 9h, départ de Saba à 15h30. Durée de la traversée
en ferry : 90 minutes environ. La compagnie
Winair dessert Saba en Twin Otter quatre fois
par jour en général, au départ de l’aéroport de
Juliana, en 13 minutes. Windward Express et Sint
Maarten Airways proposent des vols charter. La
piste de l’aéroport de Saba étant la plus courte

How To Get To Saba
From Saint Martin, one can travel to Saba by boat
or by plane. From Chesterfield’s Marina in Philipsburg,
the ferry Dawn II goes to Saba three times
per week, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday,
leaving Philipsburg a 4:30pm. It leaves Saba on
Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 7:00am. The
trip takes roughly 90 minutes.
The Edge ferry service goes to Saba from Pelican
Marina in Simpson Bay on Wednesday,
Friday and Sunday. The ferry leaves Saint Martin
at 9:00am, and returns from Saba at 3:30pm.
The Caribbean airline, Winair, flies a Twin Otter
to Saba four times per day on average, taking
off from Juliana Airport for the 13-minute flight.
Windward Express and Sint Maarten Airways
conduct charter flights. As Saba’s runway is the
shortest commercial runway in the world, pilots
must do special training before they are allowed
to land there. There have been no major incidents
since the opening of the airport in 1963.

À leur arrivée, les plaisanciers doivent prendre
l’un des corps-morts jaunes mis en place par
le Marine Park. 4 corps-morts sont installés
près du port à Fort Bay et 10 corps-morts à
Ladder Bay, à une dizaine de minutes en dinghy
du port. Ils accueillent les bateaux jusqu’à
50 tonnes. Un corps-mort à Ladder Bay est
prévu pour les bateaux jusqu’à 100 tonnes.
Les formalités d’entrée, assorties d’une redevance,
se font au port : au bureau de l’immigration
d’une part, et au Bureau du Marine
Park d’autre part. On peut télécharger les deux
formulaires à l’avance sur le site sabapark.org :
cliquer sur Marine Park puis sur Yachting, aller
Saba
au bas de la page. Si le bureau de l’immigration
est fermé, se rendre au Harbour Office,
ouvert de 6h à 18h 7/7. Le bureau du Marine
Park est ouvert 7/7 de novembre à avril : 8h
à 17h du lundi au vendredi, 10h à 16h le weekend.
De mai à octobre, le bureau du Marine
Park est ouvert de 8h à 16h, du lundi au vendredi.
La redevance de port est de 20$ pour
les bateaux jusqu’à 40 tonnes et augmente
avec le tonnage. La redevance du Marine Park
est de 3$ par semaine et par personne pour
l’entretien des mouillages + 1$ par personne et
par jour pour la gestion du parc.

Nautical Information
Upon arrival, boat captains should moor at
one of the yellow buoys installed by the Marine
Park. Four buoys are located near the port
at Fort Bay and another ten at Ladder Bay, just
ten minutes from the port by dinghy. Most of
the buoys are for vessels up to 50 tons, but
one at Ladder Bay can handle boats up to 100
tons. Clearance and payment of fees must be
done in port, at the immigration office on one
hand, and the Marine Park office on the other.
One can download both forms (customs and
immigrations form and Marine Park form)
in advance at sabapark.org: click on Marine
Park, then Yachting, and scroll to the bottom
of the page. If the immigration office is closed,
please go to the harbor office, which is open
daily from 7:30am to 6pm. The Marine Park
office is open daily from November through
April, from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday,
and 10am to 4pm on weekends. From
May to October, the Marine Park office is open
from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday.
Port fees are $20 for boats up to 40 tons, and
increase based on tonnage. Marine Park fees
are $3 per week per person for maintenance
of the buoys, and $1 per day per person for
park management.

Saba
Plongée
Créé par le passé par les coulées de lave du volcan
en éruption, le relief sous-marin de Saba est
plein de surprises : tombants, pinacles, canyons,
grottes... Une surprise attend le plongeur derrière
chaque éponge. La trentaine de sites, quasiment
tous situés sous le vent de l’île, se trouve à une
vingtaine de minutes au maximum du port, d’où
partent tous les bateaux. Le Marine Park a mis
en place des bouées blanches de mouillage
pour les clubs de plongée. La plongée en solo
est interdite. Les amateurs de plongée en apnée
apprécieront les sites les moins profonds, où ils
pourront suivre presqu’à coup sûr les évolutions
d’une ou plusieurs tortues au milieu des coraux
et des gorgones.

Diving
Created ages ago by the flow of lava during volcanic
eruptions, the underwater relief around
Saba is full of surprises: slopes, pinnacles,
canyons, and caves... A dramatic surprise awaits
the diver at every turn. About 30 sites, almost all
on the leeward side of the island, are located within
a maximum of 20 minutes from the port by
boat. The Marine Park has installed white buoys
for used by dive clubs. Solo diving is forbidden.
Those who like to dive without air tanks will appreciate
the shallower sites, where they can follow
the movement of one or more sea turtles in a
landscape of coral and sea fans.

In the Saba Bank Nature Park, which is the largest protected marine preserve in the Caribbean, a
three-year project called RESCQ (Restoration Of Ecosystem Services and Coral Reef Quality) aims
to raise new coral colonies in nurseries which are then used to repopulate denuded reefs.

Le plus réputé – «Mount Scenery Stairway»
– prend son départ à l’entrée du village de
Windwardside, en montant sur la gauche. Tout
près de là, la «Trail Shop» dispose de toutes les
informations sur le réseau de sentiers. L’excursion
d’une heure et demie, dans une végétation
dense et à l’ombre du feuillage, amène
le randonneur au sommet de ce volcan, dont
la dernière éruption remonte aux environs de
1640. Tout en haut, fougères arborescentes,
orchidées et acajous font partie de cette forêt
tropicale humide, dans une fraîche atmosphère.

récent mais aussi le plus ancien de l’île, utilisé
par des générations de fermiers cultivant
sur les pentes du volcan. «The Ladder», une
autre excursion, consiste à descendre – puis
à remonter! – les 400 marches par lesquelles
étaient transportées à dos d’âne ou d’homme
les marchandises qui arrivaient par bateau,
avant la construction de la route actuelle,
terminée en 1958. Près de l’aéroport, un petit
sentier mène à des piscines naturelles – «Tide
Pools» – alimentées par les vagues. Un sentier
inhabituel mène à une ancienne mine de
soufre (sulphur mine).

Maintained by the Saba Conservation Foundation,
a dozen well-marked trails await
those who like to hike. The most popular -
Mount Scenery Stairway - starts at the entry
to the village of Windwardside. Nearby,
the Trail Shop has extensive information
and maps for the island’s network of trails.
Through dense vegetation whose leaves
provide shade, a 90-minute excursion leads
hikers to the summit of Mount Scenery, a
volcano whose last eruption dates back as
far as 1640. At the top, large ferns, orchids
and mahogany trees are part of a rainforest,
with cool, refreshing air. The newest hiking
trail on Saba is also one of the oldest. The
Elfin Trail, reopened in Spring 2018, follows

the historic paths once used by earlier generations
who farmed the mountain’s slopes.
As the island’s most diverse trail, it takes in
three ecosystems - woodlands, rainforest,
and cloud forest. The Ladder, a different
excursion, takes you down—and then back
up—the 400 steps by which merchandise
arriving by boat was carried by mule or
manpower in the days before the road was
completed in 1958. Near the airport, a small
trail leads to the natural Tide Pools, fed by
waves lapping against the shore. Another
original trail leads to a sulphur mine.

Saint-Eustache – ou Statia (prononcer sté-cha)
– a été la première puissance étrangère à officiellement
reconnaître les États-Unis d’Amérique
lorsque le 16 novembre 1776 le gouverneur
néerlandais de l’île salua de treize coups
de canon l’arrivée du USS Andrew Doria, venu
s’approvisionner en armes et en munitions,
alors que ce navire était recherché par les Britanniques.
Une plaque offerte en 1939 par le
président F.D. Roosevelt commémore cet événement
dans l’enceinte du Fort Oranje.

Sint Eustatius – or Statia (pronounce
stay-sha) – was the first foreign nation to
officially recognize the United States of
America. On November 16th, 1776, when
the American ship “Andrew Doria” sailed
in to stock up on arms and ammunition,
the island’s Dutch governor fired the 11-
gun salute, even although the ship was
wanted by the British. A plaque, offered
by President F.D. Roosevelt, commemorates
this event at Fort Oranje.

Statia’s ecological riches, both on land and

The “Quill/Boven” National Park, the National
Marine Park and the Miriam Schmidt
Botanical Gardens, classified as a National
Park. There are 3 species of sea turtles,
the Antillean Iguana, the Red Bellied Racer
Snake, a harmless snake, orchids, cacti and
the Ipomoea sphenophylla (Statia Morning
Glory), endemic to Saint Eustatius.

Loin des sentiers battus, Statia reste une île

(Oranje Baai), les «yachties» pourront
explorer l’île et son riche patrimoine naturel

Oranjestad, la capitale, dont les quais
abritent de belles bâtisses du 18ème
siècle, et le fort Oranje, construit en pierres
volcaniques et très bien restauré. Le cimetière

premières communautés juives des Antilles.
Le fort de Windt, au sud de l’île, faisait partie
du système de défense de l’île mis en
place par les Pays-Bas.

Statia
Les sentiers
Au Sud de l’île se trouve un volcan relativement
jeune et parfaitement formé : «The Quill». Classé
en Parc national, il est géré par la Fondation
des parcs nationaux de St-Eustache (STENA-
PA) et s’élève à une hauteur de 600 mètres.
Le cratère abrite une forêt semi-tropicale et
rend l’excursion particulièrement intéressante.
Une fois arrivé au bord du cratère, descendez
explorer la luxuriante végétation qui le tapisse.
À l’intérieur, vous pourrez admirer les gigantesques
cotonniers et les arbres fruitiers, qui
forment une belle canopée, et découvrir au
moins 17 sortes d’orchidées. Vous croiserez
peut-être des iguanes, des crabes de terre,
des papillons et des oiseaux exotiques. Appréciez
le spectacle, prenez des photos et reposez-vous
un moment avant de faire le chemin
à l’envers. Avec ou sans guide, les sentiers du
Quill sont une expérience à ne pas manquer.
Comptez 45 minutes à pied entre la sortie de
Oranjestadt et l’entrée principale du sentier qui
mène au sommet et suivez les flèches.

Hiking trails
At the South end area of the island, lie a quite
young, perfectly formed volcano: «The Quill».
As a National Park, it is managed by St. Eustatius
National Parks Foundation (STENAPA)
and soars dramatically to a height of 2000
feet. The crater contains semi-tropical rainforest;
an intriguing hiking expedition. After
you have made the ascent to the crater rim,
explore the verdant lush tropical rainforest,
nestled within its enormous crater. Inside the
crater you can enjoy gazing up at the gigantic
silk cotton and fruit trees that tower the canopy.
There are at least 17 different kinds of
orchids. You may also come across iguanas,
land crabs, butterflies and exotic birds. This
is a place to come and enjoy, take photos
and relax before making the ascent back to
the rim. Walking the Quill with or without a
tour guide is something which has to be experienced.
From lower town to the main entrance
trail of the Quill will approximately take
45 minutes by foot and you will find direction
signs to guide you.

Plongée
La qualité de la plongée sous-marine surpasse
toutes les autres destinations de la
Caraïbe, dans un parc marin protégé depuis
15 ans. Des murs et des pinacles couverts de
coraux et d’éponges composent de spectaculaires
décors naturels. Ces sites sont fréquentés
par le requin gris, la raie léopard, la tortue
imbriquée, la tortue verte et le requin nourrice.
Les récifs peu profonds, entre 12 et 23 mètres,
ont été sculptés dans des piliers volcaniques,
couverts de coraux durs et mous. Les poissons
sont abondants et l’on trouve certaines
espèces rares, comme le rouget volant, que
l’on peut voir tous les jours à Saint-Eustache.
Statia
Un site de plongée renommé, situé entre 18
et 21 mètres, est composé d’épaves enchevêtrées,
dont le poseur de câbles Charles Brown,
de 100 mètres de long. De temps en temps,
un plongeur découvre une bouteille ancienne
intacte, une ancre couchée sur la sable ou
même l’une de ces perles bleues que l’on
donnait autrefois en salaire aux esclaves.
Une bouée de mouillage est installée sur tous
les sites de plongée et un seul bateau est autorisée
par site : l’assurance d’une plongée privilégiée,
avec un nombre limité de plongeurs
sous l’eau.

Diving
The quality of deep-sea diving in Statia’s protected
Marine Park, already in existence for
15 years, exceeds any other Caribbean destination.
The coral and sponge covered walls
and pinnacles provide breathtaking scenery.
These sites are frequented by grey reef
sharks, spotted eagle rays, hawksbill turtles,
green turtles and nurse sharks. The shallower
reefs of 40 to 75 feet have been carved
from volcanic fingers that are covered with
a variety of soft and hard corals. The fish life
is abundant with a few rarer species like the
flying gurnards, that are seen daily in Statia.
One of the many dive sites in Statia consists
of tangled shipwrecks located in 60 feet to
70 feet of water, such as the Charles Brown,
328 feet long, one of the longest wrecks in the
Caribbean. Occasionally a diver will discover
an antique bottle perfectly intact, the vision of
an anchor lying on the sand or even one of
the blue beads that were once given to the
slaves as their salary.
All dive sites are marked with a mooring line
and only one dive boat is allowed per dive
site: a perfect way to enjoy a quiet dive with a
limited number of divers underwater!
