President’s Message

Mark Wolkow

As I prepare to take on the position of TAS President, it has become

crystal clear what an excellent job my predecessor, Mike Gordon, has

done. His entire presidency took place during the pandemic. He never

led an in-person Temple Board meeting. He went through serious

medical issues that forced him to take a leave of absence during his term.

And yet, he kept focused on his goals. He maintained a positive frame of

mind throughout and accomplished significant achievements despite it

Mike's tenure was an excellent example of leadership for anyone who

may have been watching. Because leadership is much more recognizable

when the chips are down, and the obstacles are many than when

everything is going well. I won't go into all of Mike's successes - we only

have so much space - so I will send this public Thank You to a humble

leader who came to TAS at the exact time we needed him.

Speaking of thank yous, a big one goes out to Melissa Immel and Wendy

Drabinski for leading the Rabbi Search Team. Both of these women run

major projects in their professional lives, and they demonstrated those

skills time and again in organizing and running the search to an

incredibly successful conclusion. They led an inspired team whose

members did not shy away from any task. Excellent job!

And one additional thank you to Melissa for always being there as cochair

of the RPC over the recent years and for taking over as sole chair as

we advance. I know she will do a great job.

I look forward to serving the congregation in this leadership role and

welcome all input; by phone, text, email, snail mail, carrier pigeon, in

person, or any other means.

Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel

Summer is upon us, but Shabbat has no slowdown, which may seem

counterintuitive. After all, aren't we all supposed to slow down every

Of course, what we mean is that we have significant events coming up in

June that are being recognized during our Shabbat services. First up is

Shavuot on June 3rd, during which we will recognize our Kehillah

MAGNET Confirmands. Join us to celebrate the Torah and congratulate

our young people and their families.

On June 10th, we will install new Officers and Trustees for the Temple

Adas Shalom Board, and we will also bid farewell to Rabbi Franken, as

this will be the last Shabbat service that he will lead with us. We

encourage everyone to attend either in person or via Zoom.

Melissa will lead the Shabbat service on June 20th and the Baker family

will lead the Shabbat Torah service on June 27th to round out the month.

Lastly, we look forward to another regional havdalah event hosted by the

Kolstad family this month in Bel Air on June 18th. Bring your favorite

dessert, dish, or cocktail.

See you in shul,

Melissa Immel

Kehillah MAGNET Message

Joel Yoffee & Sarah O’Donnell

We want to thank everyone for participating in a fun-filled year of learning!

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!! Please don’t forget to sign your child

up for the 2022/2023 school year! The first day of Religious School for the

2022/2023 school year will be Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Kehillah MAGNET still has student availability for the 2022/2023 school

year at all grade levels! If you have a child or know of a family with children

who would be interested in learning more about their Jewish heritage, Kehillah

MAGNET might be the learning environment for them. We would love the

opportunity to discuss our Jewish educational programs and upcoming events

with all those interested. Don’t hesitate to contact our current Principal, Sarah

O’Donnell, at principal@templeadasshalom.org for additional information.

Tot Shabbat: Once a month (when school is in session), Kehillah MAGNET

hosts a Tot Shabbat service for children seven and younger. This service is

a wonderful way to introduce our little ones into the synagogue through

stories, music, and play. Our next upcoming service will be held inperson

once the 2022/2023 school year begins. We can’t wait to see

you there!

Family Shabbat: Our very own Mike Mullis will lead services geared

towards families on the first Friday of every month (October through May).

Family Shabbat is a great way to enjoy the company of friends, relax after

a long week and provide a further understanding of Hebrew learning!

Please join our confirmands at the next family service which will be

held on Friday, June 3rd starting at 7 p.m.

Tot Shirah: One Sunday morning a month (during Religious School), Temple

member Susannah Kolstad will be leading a half-hour-long session for

babies and toddlers in which families can sing fun Jewish/ seasonal songs.

The song session will last from 10:30 to 11:00 am, followed by half an hour

of playtime and socialization for parents/guardians! The next Tot Shira

will be held after the 2022/2023 school year begins! Please keep

watch on our Temple calendar.

See you very soon!
