Welcome to Ashton Gate for this celebration of 

Combination rugby. We’re lucky in Bristol to have 

so many clubs and players in the city and we can’t 

wait welcome thousands of them to the game on 

Sunday. 

Throughout the week, it’s been great to hear so 

much about our Combination clubs and our awardwinning 

Community Foundation. Our official charity 

works tirelessly across the community to change 

the lives of some of the people most in need of it 

and we’re so proud of their work. 

On to today’s action and it’s always an exciting 

game when we take on Harlequins. The game in 

London over Christmas was a nailbiter and we 

expect another close contest again this weekend. 

We were proud of the performance against 

Northampton Saints in front of an incredible crowd 

at Ashton Gate and we’re keen to build on that 

again today.

In the Community 

In the lead-up to today’s fixture, we’ve be shining the light on our incredible Community Foundation 

with case studies. 

Rob Camm’s Story 

Not only has Rob improved the lives of the players 

he interacts with, proving that anything is possible, 

he has enriched the lives of his father and two care 

assistant who have also become immersed in the 

sport, embracing the rugby community. 

EagleProject 

Rob Camm, 27, was presented with the Special 

Recognition Award at the Premiership Rugby 

Parliamentary awards in June 2022, for 

contribution to the Bristol Bear’s Foundation 

wheelchair rugby team, proving that rugby is 

a sport for all no matter a person’s ability or 

disability. 

Rob was left paralysed from the neck down after 

a car accident at 19 years old just prior to starting 

University in Bristol. In a story of sensational 

determination and mental resilience, Rob’s used his 

love of rugby to adjust to a new way of living, and 

to help others. 

With improved independence learning to drive a 

motorised wheelchair using only his chin, Rob found 

the strength and confidence to return to the Bristol 

Bears Foundation. Here his has risen to become the 

now highly regarded Head Coach for Bristol Bears 

Wheelchair Rugby Club. 

A truly exceptional leader in every sense Rob 

studied for GB Wheelchair Rugby coaching 

qualifications alongside his law degree. He is a role 

model and inspiration for the clubs’ supporters and 

the wheelchair rugby players who he encourages 

by delivering weekly engaging and progressive 

training sessions catering for every ability and 

disability. 

The double award-winning Eagle Project is a rolling 

12-14 week rugby programme aimed specifically at 

girls in Years 8, 9 and 10. 

The project, which scooped the PLAY Award at the 

Premiership Rugby Parliamentary Awards in 2015 

and 2016, aims not only to attract girls to the game, 

but also help to retain them in the sport as they 

progress through school and into adulthood. 

Sensory Safe Space 

OPENS at Ashton Gate 

Bristol Bears Community Foundation offered its 

most accessible matchday to date with the launch 

of a ‘sensory safe space’ at Ashton Gate during 

the Gallagher Premiership clash with Northampton 

Saints on Friday night. 

In partnership with Bristol Sport Foundation, invited 

participants from Bears’ school and community 

programmes benefited from the availability of the 

‘safe space’ before, during and after the game.

Available onsite to all attending fans with an 

additional need, a Mobiloo is a mobile accessible 

toilet with an adult-sized changing bench, hoist and 

a friendly attendant. 

With a Mobiloo accessible changing vehicle onsite 

for the first time for a Bears home game also, the 

partner charities have created the stadium’s most 

accessible offer to date. 

The Charity ‘Vehicles for Change’ run the Mobiloo 

service that enables all disabled children and 

adults to use the toilet or be changed with dignity 

and respect when they wish to go to events and 

activities – events from which they are too often 

excluded by the absence of the necessary changing 

facilities. 

Disability & Inclusion Support colleague, Kris 

Tavender, said: “From sensory lights, bean bags 

and fidget toys, to a safe and removed space from 

the main action – we are thrilled to be able to 

offer whole families of fans this unique experience 

together.

Bright Sparks 

“We work with some of the most amazing young 

people in the region, but the reality is these young 

people are some of the most disadvantaged in 

terms of sensory barriers, physical disability, and 

the simplicity of accessing events and activities 

as a family with siblings and parents all joining 

in together. And that’s the dream – proper family, 

proper community, proper inclusion.” 

With the associated costs to provide these 

experiences significant, the collaboration between 

the two partner charities at Ashton Gate Stadium 

is key to realising the goal of accessible matchdays 

for all. 

“The truth is we want this at every Bears game, 

every season,” said Tavender. 

“But we also appreciate that great goals are 

achieved through firm foundations, and that’s 

what we are really looking to build here. Real 

collaboration between the Bears Foundation and 

Bristol Sport Foundation allows us to pool resources 

to meet the greatest needs, as we deliver a second 

extended invitational event at Harlequins in the 

Bright Sparks uses sport to engage with and 

educate some of the most disaffected young people 

in the most deprived areas of Bristol. 

Bright Sparks equips these young people with the 

skills and confidence to better support their journey 

in education and increase aspirations. These young 

people are identified as being at risk from issues 

such as permanent exclusion, anti-social behaviour 

and potential into the criminal justice system. 

The programme aims to support young people 

who attend identified secondary schools located 

in areas of Bristol and Somerset in which some are 

ranked as the most deprived wards in the country.

In the Community 

Last December, Bristol Bears Community Foundation hosted its first Christmas Presence event 

post-pandemic. 

The campaign, which was launched in 2017 and is aligned with Bears Community Foundation’s Golden 

Memories programme, is aimed at resolving loneliness and social isolation over the Christmas period. 

This year, Bears players Charles Piatau, Daisie Mayes and Joe Joyce headed to the Greenway Centre in 

Southmead for a festive celebration of community collaboration. Activities included a Christmas sing-along 

and dance, plus a raffle which saw winners go away with Bears tickets and merchandise.

Bears Women News 

InternationalCallUps 

Three Bears have been called up to the Red Roses 

and six Bears have been called up to Wales’ training 

squad ahead of the TikTok Six Nations in April. 

Sarah Bern, Lark Davies and Amber Reed have 

been called up to the England squad, whilst Keira 

Bevan, Megan Davies, Courtney Keight, Bryonie King, 

Gwenllian Pyrs and Elinor Snowsill will join up with 

the Welsh squad. 

The TikTok Six Nations gets underway on Saturday, 

March 25th, as Wales take on Ireland at Cardiff Arms 

Park and England face Scotland at Kingston Park. 

Wales match will be shown BBC Wales and BBC 

iPlayer, with the Red Roses fixture will be live on 

BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. 


Bears Resigning 

World Class Sarah Bern 

Red Roses prop Sarah Bern, one of the world’s 

leading players, has signed a new contract with 

Bristol Bears, the club can confirm. 

The 25-year-old tighthead, who has won 52 caps for 

England and been named in the World Rugby Team 

of the Year for two seasons running, extends her 

stay in Bear Country for the 2023/24 season. 

The powerhouse prop was also named in the Allianz 

Premier 15s Team of the Year in 2021/22 as the Bears 

recorded a third-place finish. 

Bears Head Coach, Dave Ward said: “We are 

delighted to keep someone of Sarah’s quality - she 

has been consistently one of the best players in the 

world over the last few seasons and her ambitions 

for success match ours as a club. 

“She has also developed into one of the key leaders 

in our squad as we drive towards the end goal to be 

league champions, and we are excited that Sarah is 

part of that journey.” 

Bern said: “Bristol has the best setup in the world 

for a professional women’s rugby player. 

“The staff and players not only support me but 

challenge me every day to be the best I can be. The 

expressive style of rugby is so different from other 

teams I’ve seen, it elevates the women’s game and 

pushes boundaries. 

“Being in a space that strives for parity and 

equality between the men’s and women’s squads 

is extremely important to me. I am grateful for 

the player that Bristol has made me so far and I’m 

excited to see what we can achieve together.”

Club Connexion 

Tell us about the club in 50 words… 

Hornets were established in 1962 and have come 

a long way since! Little Stinger through to Colts, 

4x Junior Girls sides, Senior ladies’ side, 4x Senior 

Men’s teams, Walking Rugby and Touch Rugby. 

This means we now offer rugby from the age of 

4-years-old to 84, as we strice to make rugby 

available to everyone in our community. 

What has been the impact of any recent 

engagements with BBCF… 

As we look to further build our relationship with 

Bristol Bears, the Community Coaching Workshops 

have been fantastic. We’ve seen a huge buy in from 

all our coaches, which only improve the amazing 

job they do already, and ensure the quality of rugby 

at Hornets will be top level for future generations. 

How will being part of Club Connexion benefit 

your club… 

We are creating a clear pathway for our entire 

youth section, to see boys and girls transition from 

Mini & Junior Rugby through into Senior rugby at 

the club. Strengthening our links with a top level 

club like Bristol Bears will ensure everyone has 

access to top level coaching and really enjoys their 

grass roots rugby, and who knows, we’ll hopefully 

see some Hornets playing rugby for the Bears at 

senior level here at Ashton Gate.
