ABOUT THE OAG | PROFIL DE LA GAO

History / Histoire
The Gallery’s history began in September 1988 with its opening as The Gallery at Arts Court, led by its
dynamic first Director, Mayo Graham, under the aegis of the Ottawa Arts Court Foundation. In 1992, the
City of Ottawa’s recently acquired Firestone Collection of Canadian Art was transferred to the custodianship
of the Gallery, renamed The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG). The same year, Anne Doran and a group of energetic
volunteers esta-blished the Gallery’s Art Rental and Sales Service. In 1993, the Gallery incorporated as an
independent charitable organization. The following year, its first Board of Directors was elected and
Glen McInnes was appointed as Chair. In the mid-1990s, annual funding from additional government
agencies provided a more solid financial foundation for our evolving contemporary public programs. As the
Gallery’s annual budget increases incrementally, so do staff, programs and services. This allows more people to
participate through a variety of activities and events.
Le premier des grands points de repère de l’histoire de la Galerie est sans nulle doute son inauguration en
septembre 1988 sous le nom de La Galerie à la Cour des arts, dirigée par Mayo Graham, sa première et
dynamique directrice, sous l’égide de la Fondation de la Cour des arts d’Ottawa. En 1992, la Collection
Firestone d’art canadien, que la Ville d’Ottawa vient d’acquérir, est confiée à la Galerie renommée La Galerie d’art
d’Ottawa (GAO). La même année, Anne Doran et un groupe de bénévoles énergiques mettent sur pied son Service
de vente et location d’oeuvres d’art. En 1993, la Galerie est incorporée comme organisme de charité autonome. Son
premier conseil d’administration est élu et on nomine Glenn McInnes comme président l’année suivante. Au milieu
des années 1990, le financement annuel versé par de nouveaux organismes gouvernementaux consolide l’assise
financière de ses programmes publics d’art contemporain en plein essor. L’augmentation de son budget
annuel mène à celle du nombre d’employés et des programmes et services, ce qui permet de hausser la participation
publique grâce à un éventail d’activités et d’événements.
About the OAG / Profil de la GAO
The Ottawa Art Gallery is an independent non-profit public art gallery committed to the presentation,
interpretation, dissemination and acquisition of contemporary art for the benefit of the local arts
community. Our programs explore a variety of issues and include exhibitions, publications, talks, lectures, tours
and youth programming. The Gallery has a growing Contemporary Art Collection of works associatedwith the
region. It also houses the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, which is presented through changing exhibitions.
The Collection is comprised of over 1,600 works of art assembled by Ottawa collectors O.J. and Isobel Firestone.
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa est un musée d’art public indépendant et sans but lucratif voué à la présentation, à
l’interprétation, à la diffusion et à l’acquisition de l’art contemporain au bénéfice de la communauté. Abordant
un ensemble de problématiques, ses programmes comprennent expositions, publications, causeries, conférences,
visites commentées et programmation pour les jeunes. La Galerie possède une collection en pleine croissance
d’oeuvres d’art contemporain d’artistes associées à la région. Elle abrite aussi la Collection Firestone d’art canadien
qu’elle fait connaître par des expositions périodiques. La Collection regroupe plus de 1600 oeuvres acquises par les
collectionneurs ottaviens, OJ et Isobel Firestone.

The OAG strives to be the most vital visual arts institution in our community. As a leader, the OAG
is a cultural meeting place, actively developing relationships and fostering exchange between
artists and the diverse facets of our commuity.
La Galerie souhaite devenir l’institution d’art la plus dynamique de notre communauté. En tant que
chef de file de la communauté, la GAO crée un lieu de rencontre culturel qui favorise activement
les relations ainsi que les échanges entre les artistes et les diverses facettes de notre communauté.

CHAIR REPORT AND FROM DIRECTOR’S THE CHAIR MESSAGE AND DIRECTOR
2010 was a time of renewal for the Ottawa Art Gallery. Early in the year, the OAG
developed a set of five strategic priorities to help shape the organization over the
next few years. These priorities are far-ranging and represent a firm commitment
to expand the gallery and fulfil our role as the designated municipal art gallery in
Ottawa. The OAG’s strategic priorities are not just vague statements of intent but
actionable goals that come with measurable outcomes which are monitored by the
Board of Directors Committees. Within the 2010 Annual Report, these priorities
have become an organizational tool for reflecting on the past year’s activities as well
as providing a determined and ambitious path forward for the Ottawa Art Gallery.
The OAG is grateful to the many public and private partners that
contributed to our success in 2010. We acknowledge the essential collaboration
of our government partners: the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council and
the Canada Council for the Arts. The OAG is very pleased to acknowledge our
growing membership base - those of you who truly believe in the importance of
a municipal art gallery. We are also grateful to the arts community for continuing
to pursue the muse and for helping us see and understand our world in new ways.

MESSAGE RAPPORT DE LA DIRECTRICE ET DU PRÉSIDENT
À la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa, l’année 2010 s’est déroulée sous le signe du renouveau. En
début de parcours, la GAO s’est fixé un ensemble de cinq grandes priorités stratégiques
pour guider l’organisme dans les prochaines années. Ces priorités représentent
un engagement ferme sur l’agrandissement de nos installations et sur notre
rôle en tant que galerie municipale désignée à Ottawa. Elles ne se réduisent pas à
de vagues déclarations d’intentions; elles proposent des objectifs concrets avec des
résultats mesurables, et sont suivies par les comités du conseil d’administration.
Dans le Rapport annuel, les priorités stratégiques deviennent un ou il organisationnel
pour revenir sur nos activités et tracer un ambitieux parcours pour l’avenir.
La GAO tient à témoigner sa gratitude envers les nombreux partenaires publics et
privés qui ont contribué à notre succès en 2010. Nous reconnaissons la collaboration

Attract Broad and Diverse Communities to the Gallery
Attirer des communautés diverses à la galerie
Goal: To expand and diversify our communities of participation.
Objectif : Augmenter et diversifier nos communautés de participation.
Imagine Haiti
The OAG and the Humanitarian Coalition organized IMAGINE HAITI, a special fundraising
event to raise money needed for the rebuilding of Haiti after the earthquake in 2010.
This event raised $17,200.
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa et la Coalition humanitaire ont organisé un événement de levée
de fonds pour appuyer la reconstruction d’Haïti après le séisme de 2010. Nous avons
recueilli 17,200 $.
Audience Development Report / Rapport de développement de public
The OAG hired New York inter-cultural audience development specialist Donna Walker-
Kuhne to conduct focus groups and develop an audience development plan. It explored
not just how to reach out to ethnically diverse communities but also how to remain
relevant with our current stakeholders.
La GAO a engagé Donna Walker-Kuhne, une New-Yorkaise spécialiste en développment de
public interculturel, qui a animé des groupes de consultation. Elle a aussi élaboré un plan
de développement de public axé sur la sensibilisation dans des communautés d’ethnies
diverses ainsi que les moyens de maintenir notre présence relativement aux partenaires et
membres actuels.

Maximize the OAG’s Visibility
Optimiser la visibilité de la GAO
Goal: To ensure that the citizens of Ottawa know that the OAG is the city’s designated
municipal gallery and that we are undergoing an exciting process of renewal as well as
provide more ways for people to participate in the OAG.
Objectif : S’assurer que les citoyens d’Ottawa savent que la GAO est la galerie municipale
désignée de la ville et que nous entamons un excitant processus de renouvellement. Aussi,
offrir plus d’occasions à la communauté de participer aux activités de la GAO.
Profile-building Campaign / Campagne de mise en valeur de l’image
The OAG worked with Llama Communications to create the Art with a Capital A or c’est
capital, l’art avec un grand A marketing campaign. This bold new brand for the gallery
invites people to (re)vision their gallery.
La GAO a travaillé avec Llama Communications pour créer la campagne publicitaire Art
with a Capital A or c’est capital, l’art avec un grand A. Cette marque nouvelle et audacieuse
invite tous à (re)penser leur galerie.
New Membership Plan / Nouveau plan pour l’adhésion
Revamped at the end of 2010, the new OAG
Membership Plan has diversified categories and
benefits. The plan offers discounts and 2 for 1 deals
with such important Ottawa cultural institutions as
the Great Canadian Theatre Company, Opera Lyra,
and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra.
Rafraîchi à la fin de 2010, le nouveau plan d’adhésion
de la GAO compte une plus grande variété de catégories
et d’avantages. Le plan propose des escomptes et des

Strengthen the Ties and Links with Artists in the Community
Consolider notre présence auprès des artistes dans la communauté
Goal: To acknowledge the expertise of the Ottawa Art Community in shaping a new vision
for the gallery and to support our local and regional artists throughout their careers.
Objectif : Reconnaître l’expertise de la communauté artistique d’Ottawa dans
l’élaboration d’une nouvelle vision pour la galerie et soutenir les artistes de la région
tout au long de leur parcours professionnel.
Re-Visioning OAG dialogue with the Ottawa Arts Community / Dialogue de révision
de la GAO avec la communauté artistique d’Ottawa
In November 2010, the OAG led a facilitated dialogue with 90 members of the Ottawa
Arts Community around re-visioning the gallery. The main thematics that emerged
from the discussion will shape the new vision for the gallery.
En novembre 2010, la GAO a animé une discussion avec 90 membres de la communauté
artistique d’Ottawa autour de la révision de la galerie. La thématique principale qui s’est
dégagée de la discussion aiguillera une nouvelle vision pour la galerie.
Support the Careers of Emerging, Mid-career and Senior Artists, Writers and Curators /
Soutenir la carrière des artistes, rédacteurs et commissaires émergents, en mi-carrière
et établis
The OAG maintained its balanced approach to supporting regional artists and arts
writers/curators throughout their career within a larger national and international
context through various means including: exhibitions, publications, professional
development workshops, lectures and talks, studio visits, art rental and sales and
acquisitions.
La GAO maintient une approche équilibrée pour soutenir les artistes, rédacteurs et
commissaires de la région tout au long de leur parcours au sein d’un contexte national et
international élargi. Les activités comptent des expositions, des publications, des ateliers
de développement professionnel, des conférences, des visites de studio, ainsi que la
location, la vente et l’acquisition d’œuvres d’art.

Goal: Fulfil long term goal to expand the Ottawa Art Gallery.

Exploring Options / Examiner les options

Throughout 2010, the OAG board and staff worked with the City of Ottawa and KPMB
Architects to explore a couple of options for the expansion of the gallery. These options
included two sites at the proposed Lansdowne Park as well as at the existing Arts Court
Site.
Au cours de l’année 2010, le conseil d’administration et l’équipe de la GAO ont travaillé
avec la Ville d’Ottawa et la firme KPMB Architects pour examiner plusieurs options pour
l’agrandissement de la galerie, dont deux sites au parc Landsdowne ainsi que le site
existant à la Cour des arts.

Building and Strengthening the OAG’s Collaborative and Supportive
Relationships with the City of Ottawa
Bâtir et consolider la relation de collaboration et de soutien entre la GAO et la
Ville d’Ottawa
Goal: Build awareness and support for the building of a new gallery and a positive,
collaborative working relationship with the City of Ottawa.
Objectif : Sensibiliser la Ville d’Ottawa et s’assurer de son soutien pour la construction
d’un nouvel immeuble grâce à une nouvelle relation positive et collaborative entre la GAO
et la Ville d’Ottawa.

The OAG Director, Chair and Board members met with Ottawa’s Mayor and City Council
as well as senior staff to ensure that the OAG expansion project remains a priority and
to explore ways to enhance the OAG presence in the community and to increase our
potential to become the arts and culture hub of Ottawa.
