Overall, it is estimated that up to 2.7 million lives couldpotentially be saved each year if fruit and vegetableconsumption were sufficiently increased.• A recently published WHO/FAO report recommends the intakeof a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables per day (excludingpotatoes and other starchy tubers) for the prevention of chronicdiseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes andobesity, as well as for the prevention and alleviation of severalmicronutrient deficiencies, especially in less developedcountries. There is increasing scientific evidence that low fruitand vegetable intake is a key risk factor for severalnoncommunicable diseases, therefore WHO is planning aninitiative which will actively promote increased consumption offruit and vegetables.10/1/2012 LSB-TPT 2012186
