How to deal with fake Covid
information
ABC published a story about argument
arising between Chinese immigrants and their next
generation grown up here because update on Covid
and vaccine etc. fed to the older generation through
their social network of WeChat and online platforms
with fake news and misinformation cause conflict
with the other mainstream sources which their
children hang on to.
I have also heard about parents saying they
would go back Hong Kong for the Sinovac vaccine
rather than risking the Astrazeneca jab here. In the
Chinese social network there has been unfound
claims that mRNA-based vaccine could alter human
DNA. Such apprehension could adversely impact
on vaccine rollout in Australia hence could defer
freeing us from Covid bondage due to development
of vaccine hesitancy.
Obviously there is a generation gap of
viewpoint among the ethnic minorities. China
has been keen in influencing the life of Chinese
communities aboard with the aid of Chinese
social media to the extent of affecting the society
and security of Australia. If Chinese here do not
have faith in vaccine locally available but prefer
Chinese ones, would that be acceptable to the local
mainstream society? Indeed this also happens in
other ethnic communities. There are old Italian
Australians who are loyal listener of radio from Italy
refused to take on Astrazeneca due to knowing the
temporary suspension of the vaccine in Italy.
There are speculations that the purpose of
spreading such misinformation is to heighten the
failure of the Western world in combating the
pandemic, or maybe as a further blow to their
economy comeback by holding up wide-ranging
vaccination. This may not be proved but it is a
situation that Australians need to address.
The Australian government need to
counteract by better informing the ethnic minority
communities. An attempt to do it right back on
WeChat cannot be easy because the platform is
under tight surveillance/control by the Chinese
government with their massive propaganda team.
I think it is more effective for better education
and promotion be done through local community
platforms of the various ethnic minorities. Only
through this avenue the Australian government can
dispense uninterrupted and accurate Covid update
to the multicultural communities.

2021 LAND ROVER
DEFENDER P400S
William Leong
The US military Jeep had
been produced during WW2
in answer to army demand for
an all-terrain vehicle. British
Rover admired the concept
and saw an opportunity. They
inspected some examples of
the Jeep, went to work, then
responded with their own
leaf-spring suspension, steel
ladder chassis, aluminium
body version. This came on the
market in April 1948, not too
long after the US Jeep itself
appeared as a mass produced
consumer item in 1945.
The first Land Rover was
known by series number and
wheel base size in inches, e.g.
Series1 – 90, 110 or 130, and
evolved into the renamed
'Defender', which appeared
in 1984, with innovative coil
spring suspension. As well as
a popular consumer item, the
vehicle was mass adopted by
armed forces worldwide, rescue
services, emergency vehicles,
police and governments,
including the Australian
Military.
Lane Rover endured through
some periods of British industrial
hardship and several changes of
ownership, UK Rover to German
BMW to US Ford and finally to
present owners, the Indian Tata
Group, which formed a Jaguar/
Land Rover subsidiary.
The Land Rover evolved over
time, but being conceived as an allterrain
vehicle, management didn't
worry too much about meeting
evolving regulations until it had to,
since fans were more concerned
with utilitarian purpose and
abilities, and willing to overlook
safety factors.
Finally, however, with
continuing difficulties, first being
banned in the US from 1996 over
safety and other regulations, then
later troubles in Europe, it became
obvious that a major overhaul was
required, and production stopped
after the last unit left the UK
Midlands facility on 29 January
2016.
In September 2019 an allnew
Defender, completely
redesigned with no original
parts, manufactured in Slovakia,
SAMEWAY ISSUE 631 P. 20 09.04.2021
appeared at the Frankfurt Motor Show. You
would probably say that its general shape still
pays tribute to its predecessors, a modernretro
look.
The Defender's previous ladder
chassis has disappeared into an integrated
aluminium monologue body and frame,
stiffer and allowing better driving control.
Coil springs made way for sophisticated
Electronic Air Suspension, which gives a
much better ride and allows the body to be
raised for off road operation at the press
of a button. The rear is capable of further
independent movement via buttons at the
back. The suspension is isolated for each
wheel, allowing much more articulation over
off-road tracks.
The Defender is very spacious and
luxurious. Occupants are very high up which
gives a good look at surroundings and is
especially helpful for the driver. There are
durable rubber cabin and cargo space mats.
Being completely redone from scratch,
the equipment now fitted to this vehicle bears
no relation to the somewhat spartan approach
bestowed on previous models. Far from that,
there is now an abundance of all the latest
electronic passenger conveniences, safety
and driving aids. Changing from essentially
a service vehicle orientation, it now caters
for much more general on-road use, bestows
prestige and comfortable accommodation for
a family or group of people to travel anywhere
in. You would compare its new luxury and
equipment levels favourably to its obvious
rival the Jeep Wrangler.
The LR Defender has a common fulltime
all-wheel drive system, with torque
being constantly intelligently vectored
between front/back and left/right wheels for
maximum traction and efficiency, and an 8
speed Auto Transmission with high/low ratio
transfer box.
