Von 1990 an verbrachte Michael Wachtler
als „Zeitenwanderer“ die Sommer am
Piz da Peres in den Dolomiten. Sein Anliegen
war, sich durch die Jahrmillionen
bis zum Beginn der Zeit durchzugraben.
Er entdeckte dabei ein völlig neuartiges
Paradies mit vielen bisher völlig unbekannten
Pflanzen, Sauriern und anderen
Lebewesen.
Dinosauriern. Schlangen und Eidechsen
entwickelten sich. Michael Wachtler förderte
eine neue Art nach der anderen
zutage. Trug Steinplatte um Steinplatte
herunter. Um dieses Paradies als Erbe
der Menschheit allen zugänglich zu machen.
Piz da Peres
Das Werden eines Paradieses.
La genesi di un paradiso.
The birth of a paradise.
anni fino all’inizio dei tempi e, così facendo,
nulla si svilupparono all’improvviso dinosauri,
serpenti e lucertole. Michael Wachtler
Since 1990, Michael Wachtler has spent
his summers on Piz da Peres, in the Dolomites,
as a kind of “time traveller”. His
concern was to dig through millions of
years until the beginning of time and,
in doing this, he discovered a completely
new paradise with many hitherto
unknown plants, reptiles and other creatures.
241 million years ago, on Piz da
Peres, in an unprecedented explosion
of life, a Garden of Eden was developed
such as had been totally unknown until
then, with forms of life that are still seen
on Earth today. There was an uncontainable
development of conifers, cycads
and lots of ferns, coinciding surprisingly
with the decline of lycopods and Equisetites,
which had once been so strong.
All of a sudden, dinosaurs, snakes and
lizards appeared almost out of nowhere.
Michael Wachtler brought to light one
new species after another, laboriously recovering
one slab of stone after another,
so as to make this paradise available to
everyone as part of the human heritage.
Phantastische Farnwelten.
disponibili.
time the old ferns of the Paleozoic were transformed into the new ferns of the modern
age: with extraordinary speed, numerous plants mutated so as to occupy all
the various niches available.
In
dinosauri. Oggi però sono destinate al declino.
Cycads - The birth of a plant. Lycopods and Equisetites, once present everywhere,
were replaced at that time by another, completely new group of plants: the cycads.
Nowhere else in the world have so many cycads of the Lower Triassic been found as on Piz da
Peres. An unremarkable primitive cycad changed at that time in a most unconventional manner
and within a very short time The single leaves were transformed into palmate leaves, while
unusual ovules developed on various plants. Right from the start, their development plan was
so advanced that, for several million years they were able to dominate the earth constantly,
along with the dinosaurs. But now they are destined to decline.
Bjuvia primitiva (WACHTLER, 2010)
The genesis of the flower. We can now document part of the history
of an extraordinary plant assemblage, revealing many links that have been
missing until now. At this time plants, such as Pizperesia, began to form bisexual
“flowers” from their fronds, with pollen organs and ovule-bearing carpels. A
great invention was the fusing of their fronds to pollen and ovule scales on one
side and protection of the stamen and carpels on the other. Hence, the location
of Piz da Peres has given us deep insights into a remote paradise of primordial
times.
persino qualche traccia dinosauriforme (Sphingopus ladinicus).
e piante.
The showdown of the dinosaurs
The Piz da Peres also hold a rich ichnofauna dominated by Archosauriformes
(Chirotherium, Brachychirotherium and Isochirotherium) and
some Dinosauromorpha (Sphingopus ladinicus). The emergence of the
dinosaurs was therefore linked to the transformation of vegetation. The
increasingly widespread bushlands benefitted tetrapods, which were
able to elevate themselves and walk two-legged. In this Early Triassic,
there was the dawn of a long-lasting alliance and partnership between
animals and plants.
Sphingopus ladinicus (AVANZINI & WACHTLER, 2012)
Der Dinosaurier-Vorläufer (Neuentdeckung). Eine seltsame Spurenplatte
gab Rätsel auf. Sphingopus mit seinen fast dreizehigen Hinterbeinen
Charakteristiken der ersten richtigen Dinosaurier.
L’antenato dei dinosauri (Nuova scoperta). Una rara lastra con impronte
ha svelato l’enigma. Sphingopus con le sue zampe anteriori
atrofizzate e quelle posteriori quasi tridattili, rispecchiava che qui iniziarono
a svilupparsi i primi dinosauri.
The ancestor of the dinosaurs (New discovery). A rare slab with
tracks revealed the solution to the problem. Sphingopus, with its reduced
forelegs and three-clawed hind leg, achieved all the properties of true
dinosaurs that followed a little later.
küstennahes, vielleicht sogar übersalzenes Habitat an.
I pesci
The fishes
The Piz da Peres is characterised by a rich fish assemblage belonging
to five different families (Dipteronotus, Saurichthys,
Bobasatrania, Gyrolepis and coelacanths). Dipteronotus is one
of the best indicators of strong fresh water influx, Saurichthys
widespread in the Thetydalean ocean in the Triassic period, was
an able predator. Bobasatrania was another predator, but also a
steady swimmer, scrunching with great accuracy its preys with a
battery of minute teeth. The skeletons of the coelacanths recovered
allow, the insertion of the species Heptanema.
All dies bedurfte
Jahre und Jahre harter Arbeit. Erst als ich
mich in all dem genug gereift erkannte, verstand
ich die Steine und sie begannen mir
ihre Lebensgeschichte zu erzählen. So entdeckte
ich eine Vielzahl neuer und bis dahin
unbekannter versteinerter Lebewesen.
aufzusuchen.
tragen hatten. Manchmal fiel meine Abwesenheit
was ich in vielen Jahren harter Arbeit angesammelt
hatte und nahmen es mit sich. Aus
Mangel an Verständnis zerstörten sie vieles
was ich liebevoll geordnet hatte. Sie lösten
meine Etiketten von den Felsplatten, um die
Spuren meiner Suche und meines Forschens
zu verwischen und versuchten jeglichen Zusammenhang
meines Namens mit meinen
Forschungen zu löschen.
Perché io conduco queste ricerche
Da tanti anni trascorro gran parte del
mio tempo sulle montagne intorno al
Piz da Peres. Per prima cosa ho dovuto
imparare a come camminare. Poi
ad ascoltare i suoni del passato, per
finire a scrutare all´interno della roccia.
Tutto questo mi costrinse ad anni
ed anni di duro lavoro. Quando mi sono
sentito abbastanza preparato da saper
riconoscere i vari tipi di pietre, queste
hanno iniziato a parlarmi e a raccontarmi
la loro storia. Ci sono molti libri
che raccontano come capire il passato,
ma il miglior modo rimane ancora
l´esplorazione e la ricerca. Purtroppo
spesso in mezzo allo sporco, ho percorso
pistole. Molti villaggi si sono estesi durante
le mie camminate nei boschi e sono
state costruite numerosissime piste
In molti studi, descrizioni e pubblicazioni
ogni cosa, foto, annotazioni, dati
sul computer, persino il mio nome sulle
mie collezioni.
Why I conducted this research
Since many years I spent most of my time
in the mountains around Piz da Peres. First,
I had to learn how to walk and then hear
the sound of the past, at least to see inside
the rocks. This took years and years of hard
work. Only after that, I felt mature enough
to understand the rocks. At the end, the
rocks began to tell me their living history.
Thus, I discovered a lot of new and, at that
time, unknown fossils. I often read in books
the manner in which I can understand the
past, but the best way is by exploring and
searching until you have the missing links
in your hand. Unfortunately, we now live in
a time when many scientists perform their
studies in the privacy of their own home and
not in nature. Although cladistic analyses on
a writing desk can be useful, they are nothing
against many years of studying in the
wilderness.
All that time, I lied in wet soil or scrambled
onto exposed rocks. Avalanches buried me, I
was struck by lightning, and I suffered from
cold and heat. However, I felt like a free
man, something that I could not affirm from
the people in the valleys, who had to carry
out often nonsensical work. Sometimes,
my absence from normal life was noticed
and the police put pressure on me with their
guns. I saw villages expanding and an increasing
number of ski slopes that restricted
the areas I was investigating. Shortly, the
authorities imposed a research ban on me
and punished me. However, I never suffered
from resignation or desperation. I said to
myself that if I helped to decode only one
drop of water in the big ocean of science,
my life was just worth living.
In long-lasting studies, cataloguing and descriptions,
I tried to shed more light on a
lost world. I thought that all this could be
useful for humanity to understand more
about our past. I did not discover how to
make lots of money, but I walked inside nature,
as people are seldom allowed to do.
One day, the authorities confiscated and removed
all my specimens from my house,
damaging a large part of my research. My
computers, photos and notations were also
sequestered and taken away, the cataloguing
labels changed to cover the traces of my
findings and studies, and my name cancelled
from my collection and anonymised.
Wir können nun Teile der Geschichte des
außerordentlichen Aufstiegs der Pflanzenwelt
begreifen, welche uns bisher
so verborgen blieb. Die Nadelbäume
verdrängten die riesigen Bärlapps und
Schachtelhalme, die Cycadeen entwickelten
sich und zu guter letzt die heute
alles dominierenden Blütenpflanzen.
Ich danke der großartigen Natur, dass
sie mir erlaubte, so viel an Zufriedenheit
und Genugtuung zu erhalten. Vom Tag an
dann wieder korrigiert. Die Suche nach
den verschiedensten Teilen einer Pflanze
brachte mich manchmal fast um den
Verstand. Eines Tages fand ich einen Teil,
einen anderen Tag, vielleicht viele Wochen
später wieder einen. Ich verband
die einzelnen Teile. Neue Pfade taten sich
auf. Ich vergaß das Menschsein und trat
in ein neues Dasein.
Piz da Peres
Possiamo documentare adesso parte
insieme”. Tante volte sono stato condotto
sul falso cammino per poi correggerlo. Il voler
ricercare le diverse parti delle piante mi
ha quasi fatto perdere la ragione. Un giorno
ne trovavo un organo o una fruttificazione,
un altro giorno, forse anche molte settimane
dopo, un’altro. Con tanta pazienza ho assemblato
le singole parti, per fare dal singolo
“l’insieme”. Si sono aperti nuovi cammini.
Spesso ho dimenticato l´umanità e sono
entrato nella nuova esistenza.
We can now document part of the history
of an extraordinary plant revolution,
revealing many links that have
been missing until now. It was possible
to relive the rise of the modern vegetation
with the emergence of rapidly
propagating cycads, the modern ferns,
taking over the reign of the conifers as
the dominant plants in the giant woods,
and at least the evolving of flowering
plants. I would first like to thank the
beautiful nature that has given me so
much satisfaction. From the day when
I discovered the first new cycad Bjuvia
dolomitica until now I have learned so
many things about time and the relativity
of human values. When I stood
as a “time-traveller” on Piz da Peres
I completely forgot about the busy,
rushed and stressful life in the lower
valleys. For weeks, months and years I
searched for an abominable phantom:
the discovery of all parts. I was led
along wrong tracks and then corrected.
The search for the different organs of a
plant drove me mad. One day I found
some part. Another day, many weeks
later, another one. The individual pieces
were put together. New pathways opened.
I forgot about humanity and turned
into another being.
