The Libreria Editrice Vaticana (LEV) began on the 27th of April
1587, when Sixtus V founded the Vatican Press, whose fate it shared
throughout the centuries.
In 1926 the Bookstore was separated from the Press and was erected
as an autonomous entity: it was entrusted with the sale of those books
printed by the Holy See in its own Press. Later, the LEV, then only a
bookstore, became a Publishing House and today is recognized as the
official Publisher of the Holy See.
The Apostolic Constitution “ Pastor Bonus ” of John Paul II (28 th
June 1988) classifies the LEV among the institutions associated with the
Holy See. It has its own Statute and Norms.
Article 2 of the LEV Statutes states: “ The Libreria Editrice Vaticana
has, as a fundamental aim, the publishing of the acts and documents of
the Supreme Pontiff and of the Holy See.
The LEV also extends its activity to publications pertinent to the
diffusion of doctrine, of liturgy and of Catholic culture, and takes care
of every other commercial aspect for the best achievement of its finalities.
Moreover, as a Bookstore, it also distributes works published by
others ”.
The present catalogue lists all the works still available, even if only
in a few copies and with an old publishing date. They will continue to be
available until stock remains.
In the first part of the catalogue, there is a list of all the available
works published by the LEV. For the sake of facility, we preferred to divide
the titles according to the languages in which they are printed, maintaining
in the Italian sector the works in various languages.
In the second part, there are extracts taken from the catalogues of certain
particular Institutions. The titles that are listed in these extracts can
be ordered from the Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
