Turismo e qualità dell’accoglienza, un binomio indissolubile. È con questa convinzione che la Camera
di Commercio di Chieti dal 2006 promuove il marchio di qualità Ospitalità Italiana tra le strutture turistiche
della provincia di Chieti.
Per l’edizione 2010, con questo catalogo, abbiamo voluto offrire ai turisti attuali e potenziali e agli
stessi operatori del territorio una facile guida che presenta 4 possibili itinerari tematici lungo i 31 comuni
che ospitano le 73 strutture turistiche che hanno ricevuto il marchio di qualità.
La guida rende omaggio a quanti hanno investito, non senza sforzi, nel ricercare la qualità nella propria
offerta turistica ponendo in essere scelte che rappresentano un’opportunità ed una sfida per l’intero
sistema economico italiano.

Tourism and hospitality quality go hand in hand. This conviction has led to the promotion of quality in
tourism accommodation facilities by the Chieti Chamber of Commerce in the Province of Chieti and
the endorsement of the Seal of Italian Hospitality Quality since 2006.
For this 2010 edition, the catalogue offers current and potential visitors as well as tourism operators
in the Province, an easy guide proposing 4 possible themed itineraries covering 31 municipalities with
a total of 73 tourism establishments, all of which have received the Seal of Quality.
The guide is a tribute to all those individuals who have worked tirelessly in pursuing and investing in
quality in order to enhance their tourism offer. Every one of these represents an opportunity and challenge
for the entire Italian economic system.

Il marchio Ospitalità Italiana è una certificazione promossa dalle Camere di Commercio per
stimolare l’offerta di qualità in Italia.
È costituito da un gruppo virtuoso di aziende che hanno scelto la qualità come obiettivo da perseguire
e che ogni anno decidono di mettersi in discussione sottoponendosi a delle valutazioni.
Questo può avvenire attraverso un riconoscimento, una certificazione della qualità che rispetti
la condivisione del sistema dei valori tra chi offre e chi compra. Riunirsi sotto un logo comune
risponde all’esigenza di comunicare al potenziale cliente gli sforzi dell’impresa verso la qualità.
Questa scelta (e con essa il concetto di tutela dell’ospite) rappresenta un’opportunità e una

Il marchio Ospitalità Italiana rappresenta una garanzia per il turista ed offre una serie di indubbi
vantaggi sia per gli esercenti che per i turisti: visibilità, chiarezza di immagine, garanzie
di qualità, facilità di scelta per il turista.
Nonostante molte imprese visitate ed analizzate avessero votazioni buone o sufficienti, solo coloro
che hanno ottenuto un punteggio da 150 a 200 hanno ricevuto il marchio Ospitalità Italiana,
perché il marchio viene assegnato solo a quegli esercizi che hanno un’offerta di eccellenza.

The Ospitalità Italiana seal is a certification promoted by the Italian Chambers of Commerce
to develop the offer of quality in Italy.
It consists of a group of enterprises whose main goals are to search for quality and make
yearly evaluations.
This can take place by means of recognizing a certification of quality, that adheres to the
system of values between who offers and who purchases. Joining a common logo responds
to the need to communicate the business efforts taken towards quality control to potential
clients.
This choice (and with this, the concept of customer service) represents an opportunity and
a challenge for the Italian tourist system.
The Ospitalità Italiana seal provides the present and prospective guests an objective evaluation
of the service level offered.
The Ospitalità Italiana seal is a guarantee for the tourist and offers a series of undoubted advantages
to those in the business as well as for the tourists: visibility, image clarity, quality

Dall’ampia fascia collinare, dalla linea di
costa e persino dal mare, il punto di riferimento
per l’osservatore che ammiri il
paesaggio di questa zona d’Abruzzo è
sempre la Maiella. Il maestoso, articolato
ed imponente massiccio si sviluppa
per circa 30 km di lunghezza, con catene
disposte da Nord-Ovest a Sud-Est, alternando
versanti più morbidi e aspre parti
rocciose, in un susseguirsi di almeno
trenta cime che superano i 2000 metri e
che culminano con i 2793 m della vetta
del Monte Amaro.
È tutelato da un Parco Nazionale questo
ambiente prezioso e ricco di biodiversità,
che un’antica leggenda vuole legare alla
presenza di una guerriera gigantesca di
origine frigia, qui recatasi con le compagne
maiellane per curare l’amato figlio
ferito in battaglia con erbe medicinali,
che però risultarono ancora ricoperte
dalla coltre di neve. Per ricordare la
scomparsa del giovane, Giove piantò un
maggiociondolo.
E per questo sentimento di sacralità e
austero terrore che incute a tratti nelle
plaghe più silenziose e selvagge, da
sempre le popolazioni locali hanno chiamato
il loro massiccio “Montagna
Madre”, mentre Plinio il Vecchio la definì
“Padre dei monti”.
Ampi spazi erbosi, falde detritiche, forre,
campi pietrosi, ghiaioni, affioramenti
carbonatici e doline, circhi glaciali, ambienti
umidi movimentano il paesaggio.
Qui, grazie ad una felice congiuntura climatica
e alla forte escursione altimetrica
in poco spazio, convivono esemplari floristici
tipicamente mediterranei con
esemplari alpini, balcanici ed artici come
in pochi altri luoghi d’Europa: cerri, fag-

la Maiella
Visitors to this part of Abruzzo are never far from the
imposing presence of the Maiella mountain range,
dominating the entire area from the hills down to
sea. Thirty kilometres in length, with rocky ridges
running from north west to south east, the highest
peak of the Maiella Massif is Monte Amaro, rising
splendidly to 2793 m, with a further thirty peaks
soaring to over 2000 m.
Legend has it that a Phrygian warrior goddess came
to the Maiella in the hope of finding medicinal herbs
and plants to cure her beloved son who had been
wounded in battle. Her search was in vain however,
as the mountain slopes were still covered in a thick
mantle of snow. She was unable to save her son,
but Zeus planted a laburnum tree in remembrance of
the young warrior. A sacred atmosphere still pervades
this vast, austere territory today and a sombre
silence emanates from its deep, wild gorges. As
a result, the local population has, since ancient
times, always feared and respected the Maiella, calling
it “Mother Mountain”, while Pliny the Elder, described
it as “The father of all mountains”.
A National Park was set up in 1991 to protect the
Maiella’s rich biodiversity and safeguard its precious,
unspoilt environment. This is a landscape of
contrasts with grassy slopes and lush vegetation,
valleys and deeply-carved canyons, bare rocky outcrops,
dolines, scree and glacial circles. Favourable
climatic conditions together with marked differences
in altitude in such a confined space mean that typically
Mediterranean vegetation grows alongside
plant species normally found in the Alps, the Balkans
and the Arctic. There are few places in Europe where
it is possible to find such an array of flora: turkey
oak, beech, black pine, mugo pine, oak, yew and
holly trees have managed to resist human intervention
and deforestation over the centuries. There are
more than 2100 different types of plants, 142 of
which are endemic to the area.

e agrifogli continuano a resistere sui versanti
di un massiccio che nel corso dei
secoli è stato in gran parte disboscato
dall’uomo per scopi agricoli e pastorali.
Sono più di 2100 le entità vegetali, di cui
142 endemiche.
La fauna locale registra oltre il 45% delle
specie di mammiferi presenti in Italia: si
annoverano tra l’altro orsi marsicani, camosci,
aquile reali, cervi, caprioli, falchi
pellegrini, rari picchi rossi mezzani e picchi
dorso bianco, e lupi. L’area faunistica
del lupo appenninico, nel territorio di Pretoro,
preserva questa specie dall’incrocio
con cani ed impedisce, dunque,
l’estinzione del carnivoro all’interno di un
habitat ideale.
Ma ciò che rende particolare l’ambiente
naturale del Parco è la disseminazione di
testimonianze legate alla presenza
umana sulla Maiella. E se i rinvenimenti
archeologici datano la comparsa di abitanti
sin dal Paleolitico, sono le capanne
in pietra a secco (i tholoi) dei pastori, i
loro stazzi, le grotte usate come ricovero
per se stessi e le bestie, le tracce dello
spietramento a ricordarci che questa era
meta, anno dopo anno, di greggi di migliaia
di pecore e di uomini che transumavano
da e per le Puglie.
E sono gli eremi scavati nella roccia, ricavati
da una cengia, ornati da un semplice
altare in pietra, alimentati da
sorgenti d’acqua e ingegnosi sistemi di
piccoli canali, oggi a volte protetti dalle
mura di santuari, a ricordarci che questi
furono i luoghi privilegiati di eremiti alla
ricerca di solitudine, pace, rinuncia e
contatto col divino. Pietro Angelerio, poi
papa Celestino V, ha punteggiato la Mon-

The Maiella also has an incredibly rich wildlife population.
45% of all mammal species to be found in Italy
are here: marsican brown bears, golden eagles, chamois,
roebuck, red deer, peregrine falcons, the rare middle-spotted
woodpecker and the white-backed
woodpecker. Near Pretoro there is an area where
wolves have been re-introduced and are protected.
Historically, the area is fascinating as evidence of
human presence here goes back to Paleolithic times.
Dry-stone round shelters, known as tholoi, are scattered
all over the Maiella. For centuries, they provided
a place of refuge for shepherds during the
seasonal migration of sheep, that were driven over
the mountains to and from Puglia.
Hermits also found their way here in search of solitude
and peace and a life dedicated to prayer.
“Mother Mountain” is dotted with retreats carved out
of the rock, adorned with simple stone altars and
supplied with water carried through an ingenious
system of channels directly from the mountain
springs. Some of these remote retreats were erected
by Pietro Angelerio, later Pope Celestine V, and walkers
and hikers can still stumble across them today,
as they explore the Maiella’s mountain paths.
The area was also a favourite hideout brigands, who
from the 1860s onwards, took on an increasingly
political and social role as defenders of the poor and
the Bourbon monarchy against the unification of
Italy. Their names are inscribed on the ‘Brigands’
Tablet’, a rock wall between Monte Cavallo and
Monte Acquaviva.
The Maiella is a paradise for walkers and climbers as
there is something here for everyone. Less experienced
walkers can, for example, take a fairly easy
hike up from Bocca di Valle to the San Giovanni waterfalls,
while even expert climbers will feel challenged
by the ascent of Monte Amaro.
Those beginning the ascent from the Block Haus will

tagna Madre di tali eremi mimetizzati
nella natura, alcuni dei quali tuttora accessibili
tramite sentieri. Poi ci sono le
più recenti tracce dei briganti, che a partire
dal 1860 assunsero con maggiore
virulenza il ruolo politico di difensori dei
poveri e del re borbonico contro l’Italia
unificata: la “Tavola dei Briganti”, un lastrone
di roccia affiorante sul crinale tra
il Monte Cavallo e il Monte Acquaviva, riporta
le incisioni con i nomi di alcuni di
loro.
Per chi ama le escursioni in montagna,
la Maiella offre un ampio ventaglio di
possibilità che variano dalla difficoltà
non alta di percorsi come quello che da
Bocca di Valle (Guardiagrele) conduce
alla cascate di San Giovanni o quello che
dal territorio di Palombaro porta alla Riserva
di Feudo Ugni, fino ad arrivare ad
esempio alle impegnative ascese al
Monte Amaro, consigliate solo agli
esperti, da Fara San Martino o dal Block
Haus (dove sono ancora visibili i ruderi
di un fortino costruito per combattere il
brigantaggio). Percorrere a piedi un sentiero
su questa montagna, comunque,
assume sempre un significato complesso:
gli aspetti naturalistici non sono
mai disgiunti da quelli antropici.
Delle tante grotte carsiche, la più nota ai
turisti per le sue concrezioni e l’interesse
speleologico è sicuramente la Grotta del
Cavallone, che si sviluppa in lunghezza
per 1300 metri ed è visitabile d’estate e
raggiungibile tramite funivia dal vallone
di Taranta Peligna.
Per chi poi ama gli sport invernali, sul
versante chietino del massiccio ci sono
le stazioni di Pretoro (comprensorio di

Passo Lanciano-Majelletta) e Pizzoferrato-Gamberale.
Varie sono le aree protette,
come la Riserva Naturale “Valle del
Foro”, nel comune di Pretoro, dove la
faggeta assume le preziose caratteristiche
di una fustaia matura; la Riserva Naturale
Orientata “Fara San
Martino-Palombaro”, che tutela 4000 ettari
di wilderness e un’incredibile biodiversità
dovuta ad un’escursione
altimetrica di circa 2400 metri; la Riserva
Naturale Orientata “Quarto Santa
Chiara”, un esteso piano carsico nel territorio
di Palena.
L’effetto del sole e delle acque meteoriche
sui versanti più scoscesi ed esposti
delle numerose colline argillose che raccordano
le zone pedemontane con la
stretta fascia costiera, invece, provoca
la formazione di calanchi, le cui creste
affilate, specie all’ora del tramonto, si infuocano
regalando suggestivi effetti cromatici.
E procedendo dai colli verso la
costa, nel territorio provinciale ci sono
tra l’altro la Riserva Regionale Lago di
Serranella a Sant’Eusanio del Sangro,
ovvero 500 ettari di zona umida collegati
al bacino artificiale e preziosi per l’avifauna
stanziale e di passo; il Parco territoriale
attrezzato dell’Annunziata, poco
distante da Orsogna, che tutela un piccolo
corso d’acqua affluente del torrente
Venna in cui vive il raro granchio di
fiume; la Riserva Naturale guidata Bosco
di Don Venanzio (a Pollutri), che preserva
un lembo di foresta planiziaria a
farnia e frassino, lungo il basso corso
del Sinello.

be able to see the ruins of an old fort that was built
in an attempt to keep the brigands out of the area. As
visitors hike along the mountain paths they will discover
that in the Maiella, nature and human presence
are always inextricably linked.
The presence of deep karst stone caves also draws
tourists and speleologists to the area. One of the
most famous is the Grotta del Cavallone that is 1300
metres long and is open to visitors in the summer. It
can be accessed by cable car from Taranta Peligna.
Winter sports enthusiasts are also catered for. In the
area near Pretoro, Passo Lanciano and Majelletta are
two ski resorts offering both cross-country and
downhill skiing. Another major ski resort can be
found at Pizzoferrato-Gamberale.
Within the National Park, there are various nature reserves.
The “Valle del Foro” near Pretoro has an incredible
mature beech forest, while the
biodiversity-rich “Fara San Martino-Palombaro” Reserve
situated at an altitude of 2400 m, extends over
4000 hectares of wilderness. Another reserve, the
“Quarto Santa Chiara”, can be found in the area
around Palena and is an extensive karst plain.
The combined effect of sun and water on the more
exposed and steeper slopes of the clay hills that link
the foot of the mountains to the thin strip of coastline,
has over time formed badlands, the sharp crests of
which shimmer red in the sunset. Going towards the
coast, there are numerous other protected areas and
nature reserves, including the Lake Serranella Regional
Reserve at Sant’Eusanio, a natural wetland
habitat for more than 200 species of birds. Not far
from Orsogna, the Annuziata Territorial Park protects
a tributary of the Venna River which is home to a very
rare species of river crab. And finally, the Nature Reserve
of Bosco di Don Venanzio, near Pollutri, protects
a narrow stretch of coastal plains forest, thickly
populated with oak and ash.

Da Francavilla al Mare a San Salvo Marina,
la costa teatina si dipana per decine di chilometri
con ampi arenili dorati, tratti ciottolosi
e ghiaiosi (per lo più in prossimità delle varie
foci dei fiumi), e scoglio, soprattutto a partire
dalla zona di Ortona. A qualche decina di
metri dalla linea di costa, spesso l’orizzonte
verso il largo è interrotto da barriere frangiflutti
e, soprattutto in corrispondenza delle
spiagge sabbiose, questo tratto di Adriatico
degrada molto dolcemente, rendendo tali
acque indicate per le famiglie con bimbi.
Numerosi stabilimenti attrezzati, strutture
ricettive e servizi turistici facilitano un
soggiorno balneare in zona; per chi preferisce,
ci sono comunque spiagge libere
e punti più isolati e di più difficile accesso.
La quasi totale assenza di baie naturali e di
ampi golfi ha reso pressoché impossibile la
costruzione di porti, e ha contribuito in parte
a quella sorta di isolamento culturale che
storicamente ha conferito alla regione dei
caratteri di “insularità”. Ma oggi la situazione
è cambiata, i turisti d’estate affollano le rive,
il traffico litoraneo si fa piuttosto intenso e i
diportisti nautici trovano un approdo sicuro
nel porto turistico Marina di Ortona, nel porticciolo
a vocazione turistica Marina del Sole
di Fossacesia, nel porto turistico di San
Salvo Le Marinelle, e in futuro in quello di
Francavilla (in fase di realizzazione).
Dismessa la linea ferroviaria a ridosso
della linea di costa, un progetto prevede
il recupero della massicciata a fini cicloturistici
con la creazione di una via verde
di mobilità alternativa al traffico motorizzato,
che potenzialmente entrerebbe a far
parte del lungo corridoio verde adriatico.
Francavilla al Mare è una delle stazioni
storiche del turismo balneare abruzzese:
il primo stabilimento risale al 1873. Molte

The long stretch of Teatina coastline that runs between
Francavilla al Mare and San Salvo Marina offers
a stunning landscape of wide sandy beaches,
sheltered hidden coves and, from Ortona onwards,
jagged rocky cliffs that plunge into the sea.
The low-lying beaches that shelve gently into the sea
and the natural breakwaters lying just off the shore
make this part of the Adriatic perfect for families
with small children. With a wide choice of accommodation,
an excellent range of facilities and wellequipped
beaches, there is everything here to suit
all tastes and budgets. For the more adventurous
and independent traveller who is prepared to seek
out the coastline’s hidden gems, it is still possible
to find remote and solitary beaches.
The almost total absence of natural harbours and the
lack of any significant fishing port, has given the
area its rather insular character. However, with
today’s tourists flocking to its summer beaches, and
the tourist ports of Marina di Ortona, Marina del Sole
di Fossacesia and San Salvo Le Marinelle offering
safe mooring facilities to sailing enthusiasts, the
area has lost that sense of cultural isolation it once
had. A new marina is planned to open in the near future
at Francavilla.
There are also plans to turn the disused coastal railway
line into a ‘greenway’, creating a cycling and
walking route, that will eventually become part of the
long Adriatic green corridor supporting eco-friendly,
non-motorized forms of travel.
Francavilla al Mare is one of the area’s most historic
seaside towns. Tourists have been coming here
to enjoy its beaches since 1873. To the north, rows
of coloured umbrellas line the long, broad sandy
beach, while there is a narrower stretch of sand in
the vicinity of the old town. A pier near the cultural
centre of Palazzo Sirena is a favourite place for people
to hang out on warm summer evenings.

spazio ad una fascia più stretta in
corrispondenza della città vecchia e della
zona del Palazzo Sirena (oggi contenitore

frequentato nelle calde sere d’estate.
Attraversato il fiume Foro, si procede
verso Lido Riccio. Questa è una delle
spiagge più note di Ortona, ricavata in
una piccola baia protetta a Sud dallo sperone
che preannuncia i suggestivi Ripari
di Giobbe, una caletta raggiungibile solo
a piedi o via mare, in cui ghiaia e scogli
si mescolano.
Oltrepassata Ortona, alta sul suo promontorio
che domina il porto, inizia lo spettacolare
succedersi dei trabocchi. Di fatto la
Costa dei Trabocchi abbraccia tutti i comuni
costieri del litorale teatino, ma è proprio a
Sud di Ortona che alcuni esempi di queste
macchine da pesca, cantate anche da D’Annunzio,
si lasciano ancora ammirare nel loro
nudo equilibrismo fatto di pali ed assi di
legno, cavi e fili di ferro. Equilibrismo che si
materializza in un’esile passerella alta sui
flutti che collega una piattaforma alla costa,
in un sistema con alcune corde e un argano
che permettono di immergere in mare la
grande rete, in una casetta per gli attrezzi e
il ricovero delle famiglie di pescatori, detti
“traboccanti”. Non più attivi come un tempo,
i trabocchi oggi sono soprattutto oggetto di
valorizzazione culturale e turistica.
Proprio ad uno dei trabocchi della costa di
San Vito Chietino, quello ottocentesco di
Capo Turchino, si legano alcuni degli episodi
salienti del dannunziano Trionfo della morte.

Costa dei
Trabocchi
Across the River Foro is the Lido Riccio, one of the
most renowned beaches in the whole area. Nestled
in a tiny bay, protected by a spur of rock jutting out
into the sea, it is a foretaste of the remarkable Ripari
di Giobbe, a rock and pebble cove that can only be
reached by foot or accessed from the sea.
Towards the south, beyond Ortona, set high on a
headland overlooking the port, the coastline is truly
spectacular. It is from this point that the famous trabocchi
can be seen. These are traditional fishing
contraptions, constructed out of flat wooden boards,
with an intricate mix of iron cables and wires, ingeniously
balanced on poles. Stretching out to sea,
they are connected to the shore by narrow planks. A
system of ropes and winches allowed the fishermen
to let down their nets. The trabocchi also provided
shelter for the fishermen and their families, who
were known as “traboccanti”. One of these trabocchi
is immortalized in Gabriele D’Annunzio’s The Triumph
of the Death. Most trabocchi are no longer in
use, but they are a suggestive and evocative reminder
of the life and customs of the people who
once lived here, and of how the Costa dei Trabocchi,
which in reality stretches for over 70 kilometres
and includes all the towns along the coast, first got
its name.
The journey down the coast continues, passing
small seaside resorts, dense Mediterrean maquis,
olive groves and citrus trees to Rocca San Giovanni
where the Costa dei Trabocchi Visitor Centre is located.
Between the village of Vallevò and La Torre,
there is a still-active trabocco at work, fishing for
whitebait and grouper. Near here is the pebbly beach
of La Foce, and the mainly sandy beach of Cavalluccio
looking out onto another old fishing platform
and a tall rock.
The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere presides majestically

Rocca San Giovanni (dove tra l’altro si
trova il Centro Documentazione Ambientale
Costa dei Trabocchi). Fra il piccolo borgo
nella frazione Vallevò e la località La Torre,
dove l’omonimo trabocco è ancora attivo
per la pesca di novellame e di cefali, si apre
la spiaggia ciottolosa de La Foce, mentre
quella del Cavalluccio, circa 30 metri prevalentemente
sabbiosi, guarda un’altra
macchina da pesca e un faraglione.
L’abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere presiede
dall’alto le mezze lune delle baie
sottostanti di Fossacesia Marina. A Torino
di Sangro, la Riserva Regionale Lecceta
litoranea è l’unico biotopo costiero di
questo tipo e di una certa estensione presente
lungo la fascia del medio Adriatico
(insieme a quello del Conero): questo prezioso
stralcio naturale non impiantato dall’uomo
ospita anche roverelle, carpini
orientali, cerri e olmi. La spiaggia Le
Morge è caratterizzata da grandi ciottoli e
scogli affioranti dalle acque.
Il Lido di Casalbordino presenta ancora
dei depositi dunali residuali, un ampio arenile
e una piccola pineta. Oltrepassata la
foce del Sinello, la Riserva Regionale
Punta Aderci, un tratto di litorale roccioso
con tratti pianeggianti tagliati da falesie,
rari sistemi dunali e zone umide, protegge
la costa sino al porto di Vasto, in un ambiente
a tratti ideale per il birdwatching. Tra
il promontorio di Punta Aderci e di Punta
Penna (con l’omonimo faro a guardia del
porto e il Santuario ottocentesco di Santa
Maria della Penna) ci sono belle spiagge
sabbiose e cordoni di dune. Il litorale prosegue
con gli stabilimenti della marina di
Vasto e quelli di San Salvo, prima di cedere
il passo alla costa molisana.

Marina. At Torino di Sangro, the Lecceta Regional
Nature Reserve is the only coastal biotope of this
type on the central Adriatic coast with the Conero
one. Totally untouched by human intervention it is
home to the common oak, oriental hornbeam, turkey
oak and elm. There is an attractive large pebble
beach at Le Morge, with rocky outcrops jutting out
of the sea.
The Lido di Casalbordino has a broad sandy beach,
backed by dunes and a small pinewood. Beyond the
mouth of the River Sinello, Punta Aderci Regional
Reserve expands over a stretch of rocky coastline,
alternating between flat tracts of land and craggy
peaks, wild dunes and wetlands, and provides the
ideal environment for birdwatching enthusiasts.
There are many beautiful sandy beaches, dunes and
sand bars between the rocky headland of Punta
Aderci and Punta Penna. Here the Punta Penna lighthouse
warns ships away from the dangers of the
rocks and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Penna
is dedicated to the protectress of fishermen.
The well-known seaside resorts of Vasto and San
Salvo are a little further along. From here the coastline
continues until it reaches the neighbouring region
of Molise and becomes part of the Molise
Coast.

Distesi sui crinali o tenacemente aggrappati
alle falde dei massicci montuosi,
cresciuti negli ultimi decenni o
ancora stretti in un pugno di case, perlopiù
aperti su panorami che trascolorano
dal verde dei monti alle tonalità ocra
della collina argillosa all’azzurro profondo
del mare, molti centri della Provincia
riservano un motivo di interesse
culturale.
Il lungo profilo del capoluogo, Chieti, è
dominato dal campanile tre-quattrocentesco
in cotto della Cattedrale di San
Giustino (già ricostruita una prima volta
nell’840). Questa città che va scoperta
nei suoi angoli più interessanti e che vive
un dualismo identitario con il più recente
abitato dello Scalo (dove ha sede l’università),
nella valle sottostante, ha un
passato romano.
Ne riaffiorano testimonianze nelle Terme,
nell’Anfiteatro della Civitella, nel Teatro,
nei Tempietti, e persino nei percorsi sotterranei
che di tanto in tanto vengono
aperti al pubblico. La vocazione archeologica
dell’antica Teate è poi sottolineata
dal moderno Museo archeologico cittadino
della Civitella, ma soprattutto dal
notevole Museo Archeologico Nazionale
situato nel verde della Villa Comunale,
dove il protagonista indiscusso è il noto
Guerriero di Capestrano, la statua picena
dall’ampio copricapo.
Gli amanti delle arti figurative visiteranno
la Pinacoteca Barbella, i cultori assisteranno
ad uno spettacolo nel Teatro Marrucino,
mentre gli appassionati di
scienze biomediche visiteranno il Museo
Universitario.
La spina dorsale del centro è il Corso
Marrucino, su cui si affacciano la bella

Perched atop mountain crests or clinging precariously
to steep mountainous slopes, many towns and villages
in the province are worthy of attention. It is still possible
to visit tiny hamlets with just a cluster of stone
houses, while other centres have seen incredible urban
development over the last ten years. What most of
them have in common is a majestic view of the land
sweeping down to the distant shoreline, a mosaic of
green mountain meadows, ochre-coloured clay hills
and the deep blue of the sea.
Chieti is the hill-top provincial capital. In the heart of
the city stands the terracotta bell tower of the Cathedral
of San Giustino, dating back to the fourteenth-fifteenth
century. Chieti has a dual identity, the old
historic centre set on the hill, contrasting with the more
recent quarter in the valley below, the Scalo.
Thermal baths, a theatre, an amphitheatre and two
small temples are testimonies to its ancient Roman
origins. It is even possible to explore the city’s network
of underground tunnels that are occasionally opened
to the public. Civitella, the archeological area around
the amphitheatre, boasts a newly-built archeological
museum, while the National Archeological Museum is
housed in the Villa Frigerj. Its greatest treasure is the
celebrated Capestrano Warrior, a statue standing over
two metres high, famous for his wide, broad cap.
Art lovers will be drawn to the Pinacoteca Barbella, the
Teatro Marrucino has a busy calendar of shows and
performances to satisfy theatre-goers and visitors of
a more scientific bent will be fascinated by the university’s
biomedical sciences museum.
Corso Marrucino runs through the heart of the city
centre. Here visitors can stroll, enjoy the shop windows
and pause for a coffee or a drink at one of the
many bars or cafès. The very pretty Vico square with
the baroque church of San Domenico overlooks the
Corso, as does the Chamber of Commerce building,

Ma ciò che colpisce di più è la successione
di ampi scorci panoramici sui dintorni

cerchia di mura cittadine.
Una delle occasioni più suggestive per
assaporare lo spirito teatino è il Venerdì
Santo, giorno in cui per le vie del centro
si dipana la lunga Processione del Cristo
Morto, seguita dallo straziante coro di
sole voci maschili accompagnate dai
violini che intonano senza sosta il Miserere
di Selecchj.
Lungo la sottostante vallata del fiume
Pescara, divenuta area commerciale ed
industriale, l’abitato dello Scalo quasi incontra
Sambuceto, la zona produttiva in
pianura della collinare San Giovanni
Teatino.
Procedendo verso le pendici nord-orientali
della Montagna Madre, la visita a
Guardiagrele, un balcone panoramico
sulla Maiella e il mare, è d’obbligo. Magari
di domenica mattina, quando botteghe
e negozi del centro storico sono
aperti e il paese vive appieno la festa,
con il concerto di campane di Santa
Maria Maggiore (Cattedrale di Santa
Maria Maggiore), a mezzogiorno. Oltre
ad essere una culla per le specialità
agroalimentari di qualità, questo è un importante
borgo medievale d’arte e artigianato.

There are incredible views of the Maiella and Gran
Sasso mountain ranges to be seen from parts of the
old walls that encircle the city.
For those visitors who really wish to experience firsthand
the Teatino spirit, the Good Friday procession is
a moving and evocative occasion. The procession
winds its way through the city centre, followed by an
all-male choir whose heartrending chanting of the Miserere
by Selecchj is accompanied by the equally
poignant sounds of violins.
The area that runs along the Pescara river valley below
Chieti has become a commercial and industrial zone.
After the town of Scalo in the valley, the plains open
out onto the agricultural area of Sambuceto lying
below San Giovanni Teatino.
Continuing on towards the north-eastern slopes of
“Mother Mountain”, a visit to Guardiagrele is an absolute
must. Not only does the medieval town offer
panoramic views of the Maiella Massif and the sea, it
is a lively and festive place, particularly on Sunday
mornings when the church bells of Santa Maria Maggiore
ring out at midday. Visitors throng the streets,
browse in the shops, treat themselves to Guardiagrele’s
renowned gastronomic specialties and purchase
work by local artisans made out of wrought iron
and copper. Guardiagrele is also famous for the exquisite
work of its goldsmiths, particularly presentose
(filigree pendants) and sciacquajje (earrings). The
main church, built out of Maiella stone, has an imposing
bell tower. On one side of the church is a porch
decorated with an enormous fresco of St. Christopher,
by the Renaissance painter Andrea De Litio. The
church complex also houses a small museum of sacred
art. One of its precious treasures is a processional
crucifix displaying the magnificent art of the
celebrated fifteenth-century goldsmith, Nicola de
Guardiagrele.

Nelle vicinanze, Rapino è un paesino
noto agli intenditori di ceramica artistica.
Con la ben più nota Castelli, nel Teramano,
qui si creano pezzi unici, oggetti
decorati con tinte tradizionali che variano
dal giallo, al verde, al blu e all’arancione.
Fedele Cappelletti ed altri maestri nell’Ottocento
hanno consegnato agli artigiani
di oggi un corredo iconografico
fatto di paesaggi agresti, istoriati e del tipico
fioraccio. Rapino va anche fiera
delle Verginelle, quando l’8 maggio
bimbe del paese vestite di tuniche pastello
e ricoperte di monili d’oro si recano
in una processione apotropaica alla
chiesa della Madonna del Carpino.
Il paese pedemontano di Pretoro, invece,
festeggia San Domenico Abate e
Il Lupo la prima domenica di maggio:
dopo la premiazione dei serpari, durante
una drammatizzazione di vita familiare
tra tragico e faceto il clou è raggiunto nel
momento in cui il lupo rapisce un neonato
per poi restituirlo alle cure dei genitori
grazie all’intervento miracoloso del
santo. Nell’abitato di impianto medievale,
tutto di case in pietra accoccolate al co-

Not far away is the village of Rapino that is known by
pottery lovers as a centre for ceramic art along with
the more famous Castelli Teramano. Individual, oneoff
pieces are created here, decorated in the traditional
colours of yellow, green, blue and orange. Fedele Cappelletti
and other masters of the ninteenth century have
bestowed an iconographic heritage of flourishing, traditional
rural landscapes on today’s artists. Every 8
May, Rapino celebrates the Feast of the Little Virgins.
Girls from the village, decked out in gold jewellery and
dressed in pastel-coloured tunics, make their way in
procession to the Church of the Madonna del Carpino.
In the foothills, the town of Pretoro celebrates the feast
of its patron saint, San Domenico Abate and The Wolf,
on the first Sunday in May. The festivities begin with a
prize-giving to the biggest and most beautiful snakes
brought to the event. After this, there is a dramatic reenactment
of the saint’s story. A man and his wife
have their newborn baby stolen by a wolf while out
collecting wood; the saint hears their prayers for help
and intervenes, miraculously persuading the wolf to
return the child unharmed. Pretoro is another medieval
town with a cluster of stone houses on the Valle del
Foro. Two churches deserve a visit, the Church of Sant’Andrea
and the Church of San Nicola; the latter has
a beautiful seventeenth century terracotta Pietà and a
sculpted wooden portal from the same period. The art
of woodcarving is still very much alive here. Along the
road that leads to Passo Lanciano, visitors can also
stop at the small sanctuary of the Madonna della
Mazza.
The terrible landslide that struck Roccamontepiano in
1765 swept away everything in its wake and very little
survived. Today, the remains of the Monastery of
San Pietro are still visible, and the Convent of San
Francesco Caracciolo still stands, along with a few
scattered, abandoned buildings. The recently built
Church of San Rocco is a tribute to Saint Roche, a native
of Montpellier, who is said to have found shelter in

spetto dell’alta Valle del Foro, ci sono

Nel territorio di Roccamontepiano, alla
frana del 1765 sopravvisse ben poco.
Restano il Monastero di San Pietro (oggi
ruderi), il Convento di San Francesco
Caracciolo (in località Convento) e qualche
altra costruzione antica. La chiesa
di San Rocco, eretta in anni recenti, si ricollega
al culto del pellegrino di Montpellier
che trovò ricovero in una grotta
presso una sorgente. Qui è stata costruita
una fontana da cui, dal 14 al 16
agosto, si attinge acqua miracolosa con
tipici boccaletti di ceramica, nel clima
gioioso della festa di San Rocco.
Le dodici contrade che compongono
Fara Filiorum Petri, di origine longobarda,
nella fredda serata del 16 gennaio
si illuminano invece delle alte fiamme
che consumano le Farchie (larghi fasci
di canne alti diversi metri). Questo spettacolare
rito mediterraneo localmente si
ricollegherebbe anche all’intervento miracoloso
di Sant’Antonio Abate, che per
proteggere l’abitato dall’occupazione e
spaventare le truppe francesi avrebbe
dato fuoco ad un vicino boschetto di
querce.
Nella piccola San Martino sulla Marrucina,
allungata sul crinale di un colle e
legata al nome di una delle migliori cantine
abruzzesi, la parrocchiale di San Cri-

the nearby cave of a mountain spring. A fountain was
built on the spot, and here each year, on the feast of
San Rocco between 14th and 16th August, people collect
the miraculous waters in small ceramic jugs in a
festive and joyous atmosphere.
The twelve districts that make up Fara Filiorum Petri,
celebrate instead the night of 16 January. In the chill
winter darkness, long sticks several metres high and
tied together, are ignited and flames illuminate the night
sky. This spectacular rite has ancient Mediterranean
origins, but it is also a reminder of a miracle performed
by Sant’Antonio Abate, who to protect the local population
from French occupation, scared the troops away
by setting fire to a nearby oak wood.
Tiny San Martino sulla Marrucina spreads along the
crest of a hill and one of the best wineries in the whole
of Abruzzo is to be found here. Inside the parish
church of San Cristinziano is a late sixteenth century
processional crucifix, the work of a local goldsmith.
The village celebrates the marriage of San Giuseppe
and the Vergine Maria, every year on 23rd January.
Palombaro, the “guardian of the Maiella”, overlooks the
meeting place of two rivers, the Avello and the Verde
that flow into the Aventino. As a farming centre it has always
played an important role in the economy of the
area. Not far from the town, a path follows an ancient
track used by shepherds to reach the high pastures of
the Martellese and Mount Ugni. Continuing on the path
it is possible to reach the Grotta Sant’Angelo. In one of
the most dramatic settings of the Maiella, the impressive
site contains the ruins of an eleventh-twelfth century
Benedictine church dedicated to Sant’Agata d’Ugni and
Sant’Angelo, protector of shepherds and their sheep
during transhumance. The site has even more ancient
origins however, and was probably associated with a
fertility cult in pre-Roman times. In the Parish Church
of Palombaro there is a statue of the Madonna della Libera,
while in the Chiesa dell’Assunta, a beautiful

Palombaro, la “sentinella della Maiella”,
a controllo della confluenza dei corsi dell’Avello
e del Verde nell’Aventino, dovette
rivestire un ruolo importante nell’economia
pastorale del posto. Nei dintorni del
paese, un sentiero che ricalca il percorso
di un antico braccio tratturale utilizzato
dai pastori per raggiungere i pascoli del
Martellese e del monte Ugni porta alla
Grotta Sant’Angelo. Nel grande ambiente,
sicuramente dedicato al culto
della fertilità anche in epoca preromana,
oggi si trovano i resti di una chiesa benedettina
dell’XI-XII secolo dedicata a
Sant’Agata d’Ugni, e poi a Sant’Angelo,
protettore della transumanza. La Parrocchiale
conserva invece una statua della
Madonna della Libera, e tiene il Bambino
in grembo la bella Madonna lignea visibile
nella Chiesa dell’Assunta.
Ancor più immersa nel cuore montano
della provincia, Palena si raggiunge più
agevolmente da Guardiagrele passando
ai piedi di Casoli con il suo castello (da
cui deviare eventualmente per ammirare
l’altro castello, medievale, di Roccascalegna
appollaiato minacciosamente su
un dirupo). L’abitato è rinato dopo gli
eventi bellici. La chiesa barocca del Rosario
col rosone ricamato in pietra e una
statua lignea della Vergine della Neve col
Bambino del XV sec., San Francesco, il
piccolo Teatro Aventino ottocentesco
vanno assaporati passeggiando in centro.
Il Castello Ducale, abbarbicato su
una rupe e ricostruito nel 1950, ospita il

Palena, risen from the ashes of the War, is in the heart
of the province and is easily reached via Guardiagrele.
On the way, visitors may like to make a detour after
Casoli Castle to visit the medieval castle of Roccascalegna
perched menacingly on top of a precipice.
The baroque Church of the Rosario in Palena is worth
a visit, with its intricately carved stone rose window
and a fifteenth century wooden statue of the Virgin of
the Snow with Child. Strolling around the town, visitors
will also come across the Church of San Francesco
and the tiny ninteenth century Teatro Aventino. The
Castello Ducale, clinging to the top of a rocky crag,
was rebuilt in 1950 and today houses the Museum of
Geology and Paleontology. On display is an iteresting
collection of miocene marine vertebrates. Every year
on 2 July, crowds of people make the pilgrimage up a
steep mountain path to the Sanctuary of the Madonna
dell’Altare (1272 m), on the slopes of Mount Porrara.
It was here that Pietro Angelerio, later Pope Celestino
V, retired to live a hermit’s life of fasting and prayer.
Not far from here, at a short distance from Montenerodomo
is the archeological site of the ancient Roman
town, Iuvanum.
At Orsogna, inside the Church of San Nicola there is
another processional crucifix by the master goldsmith,
Nicola da Guardiagrele. Here the local people always
celebrate the Tuesday after Easter, underlining the importance
they attach to their traditions and customs,
and their sense of cultural identity. The feast is called
I Talami and it involves a rather unusual procession of
carts on which young actors re-enact scenes from the
Old and New Testaments. In recent years, the town
has also begun to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption
on 15th August in the same way. The view of the
mountains that can be seen in the background of
Michetti’s painting La figlia di Jorio, is exactly the same
view of the Maiella that can be admired from Orsogna.
A short distance away is Sant’Eusanio del Sangro,
the birthplace of Cesare De Titta, local writer and poet.

Si tiene invece il 2 luglio di ogni anno il
pellegrinaggio al Santuario Madonna dell’Altare
(1272), alle falde del Monte Porrara:

V, vi si ritirò in eremitaggio. Alla più agevole
carrozzabile i pellegrini preferiscono
il sentiero montano. E non sono molto
distanti i suggestivi scavi archeologici di
Iuvanum (città italica e poi municipio romano),
nel comune di Montenerodomo.
Ad Orsogna, un’altra croce astile di Nicola
da Guardiagrele (conservata nella
chiesa di San Nicola), ed un’altra festa
sottolineano l’identità culturale locale. Il
Martedì di Pasqua (e ora anche a Ferragosto)
si organizza un’insolita sfilata devozionale
di carri, su ciascuno dei quali
giovanissimi attori inscenano con l’ausilio
di macchine sceniche episodi biblici
tratti da Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento: è
la festa de I Talami. E proprio da Orsogna
è vista la Maiella che fa da sfondo a
La figlia di Jorio dipinta da Michetti.
Poco distante, Sant’Eusanio del Sangro,
che trova nel barocco Palazzo Finamore
una delle sue attrattive artistiche,
diede i natali a Cesare De Titta, latinista,
letterato e poeta dialettale che cantò la
semplicità, la disperazione e l’ironia del
suo popolo in Gente d’Abruzzo.
Come in varie località del Centro-Sud, a
Lanciano i riti della Settimana Santa si
tingono di reminiscenze spagnoleggianti
e del suono cupo della raganella. Ma la
città frentana, la cui fondazione risalirebbe
ad uno dei compagni fuggiaschi di
Enea e che storicamente è stata per ec-

His People of Abruzzo, written entirely in dialect, is a
telling and affectionate portrait of the people of this region
in all their simplicity, desperation and irony. There
are several well-conserved baroque buildings in the
town, of which Palazzo Finamore is one of the finest.
In common with many places in the centre and south
of Italy, the Holy Week celebrations in Lanciano are
reminiscent of Spanish religious rites. The procession
is accompanied by the sound of the raganella, a
wooden instrument that produces a sad, deep lament.
Lanciano’s history goes back a long way. It is believed
to have been founded by one of Enea’s companions
after fleeing Troy. Important market fairs were held
here during the Reign of Naples. Today it is an elegant,
lively city, hosting many cultural attractions and
events. Apart from Holy Week, the city has numerous
occasions during the year dedicated to celebrating and
feasting. In August, the election of the Mastrogiurato
recalls the time when the city enjoyed special privileges
and could nominate a learned person as magistrate
to support the mayor in administering and
policing the city. Also in August is the Feast of Sant’Egidio
where traditionally ladies are given little bells.
In September, the Gift to Santa Maria del Ponte is celebrated
with processions and harvest offers, while on
23rd December, La Squilla is an occasion to render
homage to the older people in the family and exchange
gifts. The historic centre is a delight to explore on foot
with its narrow streets and terracotta buildings. Visitors
can stroll down to the Cathedral of Santa Maria
del Ponte that faces onto the Piazza Plebiscito. The
cathedral was built on the bridge that once connected
the piazza to the field where the market fairs were held.
The thirteenth century Santa Maria Maggiore also deserves
a visit, as does the church of San Francesco,
which contains the venerated relics of the Miraculous
Eucharist.
Nearby, Frisa is traditionally linked to a local grape variety
of Moscato. The town has some religious build-

e costruita sul ponte di Diocleziano che univa il centro abitato con il
“prato delle fiere”, oppure lungo il percorso archeologico sotterraneo, o
alla ricerca della preziosissima Santa Maria Maggiore, duecentesca, o di
San Francesco. Non va dimenticato che quest’ultimo è anche il complesso
in cui si custodiscono le venerate reliquie del Miracolo Eucaristico, avvenuto
forse nell’VIII secolo. E in città ha sede anche la storica casa editrice
Carabba.
Frisa, nei dintorni, è legato al nome di un clone locale di Moscato. Il borgo,
oltre ad alcuni edifici religiosi e ad un Palazzo baronale costruito nel ‘600
dai Caccianini, che inglobarono nella loro dimora strutture preesistenti (tra
cui una torre trecentesca), ha anche un breve passaggio di raccordo tra antico
castro e nuovi quartieri a tre campate, in mattoni e archi a tutto sesto.

seventeenth century by the Caccianini
family, who incorporated pre-existing
buildings into their noble residence, including
a fourteenth century tower.
There is also a short walk under a series
of pointed brick arches joining the
ancient Roman castrum to the new
residential areas.
Arielli was bombed and badly damaged
during the Second World War.
The churches of San Rocco and San
Michele, both dating back to the thirteenth
century have been rebuilt. Inside
the Sanctuary of the Madonna
delle Grazie, there is a precious, fifteenth
century wooden statue of the
Madonna with Child.
Arriving from the north, Francavilla al
Mare is the first town on the Chieti
coast. Today it is a busy seaside resort,
famous for its colourful carnival
floats and fireworks on the sea on
18th August. At the end of the nineteenth
century, it was the meeting
place for artists and writers, such as
D’Annunzio and his followers. The painter, Francesco Paolo Michetti,
bought the fifteenth century convent of Santa Maria del Gesu high on a hill
above the town, and it became the artists’ headquarters, a place to dicuss
and exchange ideas. As a painter, Michietti developed an original and unusual
style, a cross between decadent symbolism and photographic realism.
Two of his large paintings, The Snakes and The Crippled are housed
in the Michetti Museum, which also organizes exhibitions and other cultural
events. Inside the modern church of San Franco is a fifteenth century
ostensory by Nicola da Guardiagrele.
A little way inland, Ripa Teatina can be instantly recognized by its bell tower
on the crest of a hill overlooking the Alento Valley. During the grape harvest
season, the countryside all around is impregnated with the smell of grape

d’artificio sul mare del 18 agosto, fu
sul trascolorare dell’Ottocento il luogo di
ritrovo del Cenacolo dannunziano. Il padrone
di casa era Francesco Paolo Michetti,
proprietario dell’ex Convento
quattrocentesco di Santa Maria del
Gesù, nella parte alta del paese, e autore
originale di uno stile che mediava il simbolismo
decadente e il realismo dell’arte
fotografica. Due delle sue grandi tele, Le
Serpi e Gli Storpi, sono conservate al
Museo Michetti, luogo eletto per manifestazioni
culturali, mostre e rassegne.
Nella moderna chiesa di San Franco si
trova un ostensorio quattrocentesco di
Nicola da Guardiagrele.
Ripa Teatina, un po’ all’interno, si staglia
col campanile sul crinale di un colle
che guarda la valle del fiume Alento. Le
campagne durante la vendemmia profumano
di mosto. Una statua raffigurante
Rocky Marciano ricorda che proprio da
questo piccolo paese proveniva il padre
del campione di boxe cresciuto negli
Stati Uniti e divenuto famoso per i 49 incontri
che lo videro imbattuto.

must. A statue of Rocky Marciano proudly reminds
visitors that this small town was the birthplace of the
father of the champion boxer, who grew up in the
U.S.A. and became famous after winning 49 matches
in a row.
Set amidst hills covered in vineyards Miglianico is
best known for its wine production. The town centre
was originally concentrated around the late medieval
castle (after being damaged during the war, it was rebuilt
as residential housing); the Comune now spreads
over eight districts. The writer D’Annunzio, and
Michetti the painter, both drew inspiration from this
place, which is situated not far from where the River
Dentolo meets the River Foro. On 27th July, the feast
of San Pantaleone is still celebrated here, although in
a completely different way to how the two artists described
the ritual, which they claimed was almost barbaric
and totally incomprehensible.
D’Annunzio described Ortona as «glowing whitely like
a scorching eastern city on a hill in Palestine». Looking
up at the town today, set high above the port, D’Annunzio’s
image springs vividly to life. And from the
beautiful promenade, known as the Passegiata Orientale,
visitors to the town can look out and contemplate
the deep blue of the sea. There are numerous cultural
institutions in the town. The Pinacoteca “Michele e
Basilio Cascella” is currently closed for restoration and
renovation work. Not far from the castle however is
the National Tostiano Institute and the Abruzzo Museum
of Music, dedicated to the composer Francesco
Paolo Tosti, a native of Ortona. The relics of St.
Thomas are kept inside the Cathedral of San Tommaso.
Badly bombed and damaged during the war, as
was much of the town, the cathedral has a beautiful
gothic portal. One of the bloodiest battles of the Second
World War was fought here and the people of Ortona
were awarded a gold medal for bravery. The
Battle Museum retells the painful history of Ortona’s
role during the war.

Dentolo e del Foro. Il 27 luglio, infatti, vi
si celebra tuttora la Festa di San Pantaleone,
sebbene con forme ben diverse
da quelle descritte dai due artisti, che ne
esasperarono i rituali incomprensibili e
semibarbarici.
Ortona, per D’Annunzio, «biancheggiava
come un’ignea città asiatica su un colle
della Palestina». E guardando il borgo
compatto, alto sull’insenatura del suo
porto, l’immagine torna a prendere vita.
La bella Passeggiata Orientale apre il suo
respiro sulla distesa blu. E la cultura si
fa spazio nei vari templi cittadini a lei dedicati:
la Pinacoteca comunale “Michele
e Basilio Cascella” (attualmente chiusa
per ristrutturazione) e, non lontani dal
Castello aragonese, l’Istituto nazionale
tostiano e il Museo musicale d’Abruzzo
(che celebrano la figura del compositore
ortonese Francesco Paolo Tosti). La Cattedrale
di San Tommaso, custode delle
reliquie dell’apostolo, è preziosa per il
suo portale gotico, ed è rifiorita dalle ceneri
della guerra come gran parte della
città. Ad Ortona, che meritò la medaglia
d’oro al valore civile, infatti, si combatté
una delle più sanguinose battaglie del
Secondo Conflitto Mondiale: il Museo
della Battaglia ne traccia una dolorosa
storia.

The Gustav line, the German line of defence in the Second
World War, connected the Chieti coast to Cassino.
Many civilians who lived along the line were caught up
in the ferocious fighting, and a number of small towns
and villages were raised to the ground by the retreating
Germans or badly damaged by the Allies’ bombs.
Fortunately, the area’s cultural identity managed to survive
in spite of the terrible destruction. Some minor
works of art that escaped war damage, include a series
of beautiful fountains in the area around Canosa
Sannita, a member of the Wine Cities Association, and
the Palazzo Martucci that today houses the Museum of
War and Peace. The war-damaged medieval castle of
Crecchio, just a few kilometers away, is where King
Vittorio Emanuele III and the Italian Chief of Staff
stayed after the Armistice on 8th September 1943, before
embarking at Ortona. Today, the castle houses the
Abruzzo Byzantine and Late-Medieval Archeological
Museum.
Like Ortona, San Vito Chietino stands on a headland
overlooking a succession of tiny inlets and the stunning
Costa dei Trabocchi. From here, the panorama
stretches as far as Gargano and the Isole Tremiti.
Today, the Marina is a popular seaside resort, but its
fame is linked to the fact that it was here that D’Annunzio
chose to retire to what he called his “Hermitage”,
to write The Triumph of the Death.
Fossacesia, a little further south, came under fire during
the battle of Sangro. However, its cultural roots lie in the
beauty of its surroundings. A temple to the goddess
Venus was originally built on a promontory a short distance
from where the town stands today. The splendid
abbey of San Giovanni in Venere was later constructed
on top of the temple ruins. The abbey, built in Gothic-
Cisternian style, has a thirteenth century carved marble
portal and three magnificent apses. In the eleventh century,
Abbot Oderisio II founded Rocca San Giovanni to
defend the abbey and the local people, bringing them in
from the countryside to live inside the more secure walls

al Gargano e alle Isole Tremiti. La Marina è oggi un’apprezzata località balneare.
La fama del luogo, oltre alla presenza delle macchine da pesca corrose
dalla salsedine, è legata al fatto che qui D’Annunzio si ritirò nel
cosiddetto Eremo, in realtà una casa colonica, per scrivere il Trionfo della
morte.
Poco più a Sud, Fossacesia fu vittima della battaglia del Sangro, ma lo spirito
del posto affonda le radici in tempi in cui la bellezza dell’area indusse
devoti ad innalzare su un promontorio poco distante dall’attuale abitato un

a parish church. The church is dedicated
to Saint Matthew the Apostle; the
bell tower and the municipal palace built
in medieval style are the only monuments
of note to have withstood the
ravages of the Second World War.
Further inland, Bomba stands overlooking
the lake of the same name. The artificial
reserve on the Sangro River was
constructed in the 1950s to supply
Rome with energy and it has brought
undoubted economic benefits to the
area. The parish church of Santa Maria
del Popolo was built in the middle of the
XVIII century by the uncle of the
Spaventa brothers, Silvio, a famous liberal
and patriot who later became minister
under the Italian government after
unification, and Betrando, a renowned
philosopher. The house where they were
born is still visible. Nearby is Monte Pallano,
where important archeological
findings have to come light in recent
years. Digs are still going on in the hope
that more may be discovered about
human presence in the area that goes
back hundreds and hundreds of years.
At Atessa, the parish church of San Leucio, which has a beautifully rich
Baroque interior, owes its origins to a combination of art and legend. Originally
built in the IX century, it occupies the spot where the community of Ate joined
the community of Tixe. According to legend, the two communities were unable
to unite because of the presence of a ferocious dragon. Bishop Leucio fortunately
saved the people from danger, and inside the church a rib of the
monster (in reality a fossil belonging to some long dead mammal), remains
on display to remind everyone of the origins of the town. Here too, is a precious
ostensory by Nicola da Guardiagrele. Other attractions include the Gothic
door of San Giuseppe (one of four that have survived the partial transformation
of the city walls), a permanent exhibition of Christmas cribs in the old
covered market area that is interesting to see as it gives an idea of how life was

il campanile e il palazzo municipale ottocentesco
di imitazione medievale sono i
principali monumenti sopravvissuti agli
attacchi del conflitto mondiale.
Più all’interno, Bomba sta a guardia delle
rive dell’omonimo lago, meta turistica e
sede di gare internazionali di canoa. L’invaso
artificiale sul fiume Sangro fu
creato negli anni Cinquanta per convogliare
energia elettrica a Roma, portando
indubbi vantaggi e una rinnovata economia.
La Parrocchiale di Santa Maria del
Popolo fu ricostruita alla metà del XVIII
secolo dallo zio dei due più noti Spaventa,
Silvio (patriota liberale e poi ministro
dell’Italia unificata) e Bertrando
(filosofo). La loro casa natale, da dove
poi partirono per vite da intellettuali militanti
e di spessore, è ancora visibile. Il
vicino monte Pallano, sede di importanti
ritrovamenti archeologici negli ultimi
anni, lascia sperare in altre sorprese storiche
che facciano ulteriore luce sulle più
antiche presenze umane in zona.
Ad Atessa, leggenda e arte si fondono
per dar vita alla parrocchiale di San Leucio:

lived in Atessa in times gone by, and a fountain by modern
architect Giò Pomodoro in Piazza Oberdan. In August,
the town attracts visitors to its gastronomy fair,
known as the Corti Antiche. A short distance from the
town is the Convent San Pasquale in Contrada Vallaspra.
Not far from here is Carpineto Sinello, standing on the
slopes of Monte Sorbo. The picturesque centre is
dominated by the massive presence of the Ducal Castle
that was transformed into a noble residence in the
eighteenth century. The waters of the River Sinello
played an important part in the local economy as they
were used to drive some mills in the area. Scerni,
whose origins go back to late-medieval times, belonged
to the D’Avalos family. Its main cultural attraction
is the Church of San Panfilo. Originally built in the
fourteenth century, it has been renovated and restored
many times; today it has a double flight of steps leading
up to a baroque brick façade.
The British Military Cemetry can be found at Torino di
Sangro. 2,167 Commonwealth soldiers gave their lives
here at the Battle of Sangro that took place between
November and December 1943. In the town itself, the
parish church of San Salvatore has a pretty sixteenth
century façade. The coast with its beaches, trabocchi
and the Lecceta Nature Reserve are all close by.
The procession which takes place each June at the
Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli in Casalbordino,
is mentioned in D’Annuzio’s The Triumph of the
Death and is depicted in Michetti’s enormous painting,
The Procession of the Crippled. The Sanctuary (inside
which is a Benedictine library) and the feast, which
today is quite different from that portrayed by D’Annuzio
and Michetti, is a reminder of a miracle that took
place here in 1576, when a Pollutri farmer was
awarded for his devotion. His fields remained miraculously
undamaged when a violent hailstorm struck the
area. Nearby, the ruins of the Monastery of Santo Stefano
ad Rivum Maris are all that are left of a large Bene-

e in agosto la rassegna enogastronomica Corti Antiche. Poco fuori dal
paese, si trova il Convento di San Pasquale in Contrada Vallaspra.
Non molto distante, Carpineto Sinello sorge alle pendici del Monte Sorbo.
Il pittoresco abitato è sovrastato dalla mole del Castello Ducale, trasformato
nel Settecento in dimora residenziale. Storicamente le acque del sottostante
fiume Sinello giocarono un ruolo importante per il paese,
alimentando vari mulini.
Scerni, di origine altomedievale, entrò a far parte dei possedimenti dei
D’Avalos. La sua principale risorsa artistica è la chiesa di San Panfilo, originaria
del Trecento ma poi profondamente rimaneggiata, con la facciata
barocca in mattone e doppia gradinata.

Along the coast, Vasto, ancient Histonium,
is without doubt one of the region’s
gems. It owes much of its
illustrious past to the Spanish D’Avalos
family, who ruled over the town for three
hundred years until 1798. Vittoria
Colonna who married Francesco D’Avalos
in the early part of the sixteenth century,
lived like a Spanish princess in the
family’s noble palazzo. She became famous
for her verses after her husband,
with whom she was very much in love,
died. The Palazzo D’Avalos today
houses the Civic Museum, which has a
collection of archeological findings and
an exhibition of paintings by Abruzzo
artists. Part of the imposing Caldoresco
Castle has been turned into residential
housing. The town is also the birthplace
of the patriot and poet Gabriele Rossetti,
who was forced to flee to London because
of his support for the liberal
cause. His son, Dante Gabriel Rossetti
was one of the founders of the pre-
Raphaelite movement. The Rossetti family house is still visible today.
Castiglione Messer Marino, situated almost on the borders with Molise
and near the Italic temples of Schiavi, is famous for its carnival. During
carnival time, the favourite dish is le sagne a lu cutter, flavoured with a mix
of liver sausage, bacon and peperoncino. The carnival atmosphere is made
even more lively and joyous by the presence of local pulcinella. Inside the
town that takes its name from the feudal lord Marino Caracciolo, the Mother
Church has a beautiful stone-carved portal and a painting by a local artist
from Lanciano, Federico Spoltore. Every 11th September, a procession
winds its way into the countryside to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del
Monte. The celebrations last all day and into the night with everyone enjoying
an enormous open-air picnic.

sul fiume Sangro. In paese, c’è la parrocchiale di San Salvatore, con la
bella facciata cinquecentesca. Le spiagge, i trabocchi e la lecceta distano
poco.
La processione che si tiene in giugno a Casalbordino presso il Santuario
della Madonna dei Miracoli fu tratteggiata con le tinte fosche del Trionfo
della Morte e del dipinto michettiano La via degli Storpi. L’edificio (che conserva
anche una biblioteca monastica benedettina) e la festa, che oggi si
svolge secondo modalità ben diverse, ricordano un miracolo avvenuto nel
1576 per premiare la devozione di un agricoltore di Pollutri che ebbe il suo
campo illeso da una forte grandinata. In località Santo Stefano, i ruderi del
Monastero di Santo Stefano ad Rivum Maris sono ciò che rimane di un
complesso benedettino dell’IX sec. dove forse era già un tempio pagano.
Ancora sulla costa, Vasto, l’antica Histonium, è senza dubbio una delle
perle della regione. Il passato illustre è legato soprattutto alla lunga dominazione
degli spagnoli D’Avalos, che terminò nel 1798 dopo tre secoli. Nel
centrale Palazzo D’Avalos, dove visse come castellana la poetessa Vittoria
Colonna, oggi si trovano i Musei civici, che ad una collezione archeologica
affiancano l’esposizione dei quadri di pittori abruzzesi, come i vastesi Palizzi.
L’imponente Castello Caldoresco, invece, è ora in parte adibito ad abitazione.
La città diede anche i natali a Gabriele Rossetti (è ancora presente
la sua casa), poeta patriota costretto alla fuga a Londra per l’ardire dei suoi
versi e padre di quel Dante Gabriel che divenne uno dei maggior preraffaelliti
inglesi.
Carnevale è la vera festa di Castiglione Messer Marino, quasi ai confini
con il Molise e non distante dai templi italici di Schiavi d’Abruzzo. Il piatto
del giorno sono le sagne a lu cutter condite con salsicce di fegato e di
carne, pancetta e polvere di peperoncino, da mangiare preferibilmente con
le mani, in un clima reso gioioso dai locali Pulcinella. Nel borgo che prende
il nome dal feudatario Marino Caracciolo c’è il bel portale in pietra della
Chiesa Madre, che all’interno conserva tele del lancianese Federico Spoltore.
Al santuario di Santa Maria del Monte, in aperta campagna, invece,
l’11 settembre si va in processione e si festeggia con un grande pic-nic fino
a tarda sera.

La varietà dei paesaggi si compone nel
mosaico di una tavola imbandita da mani
esperte. Filari rigogliosi di viti, spesso allevate
nei classici pergoloni, ammantano
i terreni collinari di gran parte della provincia
di Chieti e la rendono, tra le brezze
dell’Adriatico e i massicci montuosi dell’interno,
una delle aree più vitate della
penisola.
E nel calice brilla quasi sempre il rosso
rubino, magari con riflessi granati, di un
intenso ed asciutto Montepulciano
d’Abruzzo Doc. Ma può riservare sorprese
altrettanto interessanti sorseggiare
la versione Cerasuolo dello stesso vitigno,
un nettare rosso ciliegia, fresco e
ricco di un buon corredo aromatico.
I caratteri identitari dell’arte enologica
provinciale si esprimono con risultati a
volte importanti attraverso il lavoro attento
di grandi cantine cooperative e piccoli
produttori. La ricerca della qualità è
costante: tra i bianchi, alla storica Doc
Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, si affianca ora la
Doc Tullum, che nella zona di Tollo esalta
anche i vitigni autoctoni Pecorino e Passerina.
L’oro giallo, invece, localmente viene
prodotto almeno dal II secolo d.C. e
prende il nome di olio extravergine di
oliva Colline Teatine Dop (eventualmente
accompagnato dalle menzioni geografiche
aggiuntive Frentano o Vastese).
Fruttato, equilibrato, erbaceo, con leggere
sensazioni di amaro e piccante,
trova nell’autoctona Gentile di Chieti e nel
Leccino le principali cultivar che entrano
nella sua composizione.

The variety of landscape is reflected in the region’s
food and wine. From the coastal resorts to the mountain
villages, expert hands create a delicious mosaic of
colours and tastes to satisfy even the most discerning
palate. Between the mountains and the sea is one of
the largest winegrowing areas in Italy. The hills of the
Chieti Province are covered with lush vineyards. This
is the terroir of the splendid ruby-red Montepulciano
d’Abruzzo Doc, an intense dry wine with a full-bodied
flavour. Visitors to the area would also do well to try
the lesser-known Cerasuolo, which comes from the
same grape varietal. Richly aromatic, it is has a fruity
bouquet with nuances of cherry.
The excellent quality of the wines here is guaranteed
by the constant research that goes into winemaking,
by both the larger cooperatives in the province and the
smaller, independent producers. One of the most important
white wines that has traditionally been produced
in the area is the Doc Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. This
has now been joined by the Doc Tullum, that comes
from the area around Tollo, and is made from two indigenous
grape varieties, Pecorino and Passerina.
The ‘liquid gold’ of Abruzzo here takes the name olio
extravergine di oliva Colline Teatine Dop (depending
on the geographical area where the oil is produced,
Frentano or Vastese may also be added to the name).
It has been produced here since at least the second
century A.D. It has a frutty, balanced, grassy taste with
a slightly bitter or spicy flavour. The two olive cultivars
that are native to the area are Gentile di Chieti and Leccino.
The traditional Chietino menu has been influenced
since ancient times by its devotion to Mother Earth,
the production of durum wheat and the practice of
transhumance. Inland, the dishes are robust country
fare with richly intense flavours, while down on the
coast, simply cooked fresh fish perfectly reflects the
traditional way of life of the traboccanti. The market
gardens of the plains between the hills and the sea
guarantee that fruit and vegetables are always fresh
and full of flavour.

E se Fara San Martino, ai piedi della Maiella
e grata alla presenza delle acque del
fiume Verde, è diventata uno dei templi
mondiali della pasta di grano duro, e la
scuola alberghiera di Villa Santa Maria
ha regalato grandi chef a case reali e ad
alcuni dei migliori ristoranti del mondo,
continua ad estasiare anche l’esplorazione
minuziosa, ettaro per ettaro, di
gran parte del territorio provinciale.
Guardiagrele è uno scrigno di gioielli artistici
in pietra che racchiude un prezioso
tesoro di sapori. La cittadina si configura
infatti come un piccolo distretto gastronomico:
ristoranti di ottimo livello e
aziende agroalimentari, carni di qualità,
porchetta artigianale, farina, vino, olio,
farro, orzo e lenticchie invitano ad una
sosta prolungata tra le vie che termina
necessariamente con un boccone dolce.
Qui la pasticceria è di casa da generazioni:
oltre allo speziato e zuccherato torrone
locale, agli amaretti, ai biscotti di
mandorle e ai fruttini di pasta reale, attirano
l’attenzione i dolci che vengono
maliziosamente chiamati “sise de mòneche”
o più educatamente “tre monti”.
Queste soffici paste a base di Pan di
Spagna, modellate con tre punte, spolverate
di zucchero a velo e farcite con
uno strato di crema pasticcera, paiono
irriproducibili altrove e sono il simbolo
dei giorni di festa.

The pasta of Fara San Martino, situated at the foot of
the Maiella, rightly enjoys a worldwide reputation,
thanks to the flowing waters of the Verde river. It is no
coincidence that the Hotel and Catering School of Villa
Santa Maria that is located near here, has trained some
of the world’s top chefs.
Guardiagrele is a treasure chest made of stone. Open
it up, and visitors will discover that it is a gastronome’s
paradise: excellent restaurants, top food and wine producers,
premium meat products, porchetta, extra virgin
olive oil, wheat flour, spelt, barley and lentils, the
list is endless. And at the end of a delicious meal, who
can resist a sweet dessert to round it off? Here the art
of making sweets and cakes has been passed down
from generation to generation. First there is the local
nougat or torrone, sweet and spiced, then there are
the delicious amaretti and almond biscuits, followed
by the perfectly-formed marzipan fruits. But perhaps
the greatest temptation of all are the “sise de
mòneche”, literally “nuns’ breasts’’, but rather more
politely translated as “three mountains”; these light
and fluffy sponge cakes are shaped into three peaks,
filled with custard cream and sprinkled with icing
sugar. They are made specially to celebrate certain
feast days in the year and cannot be found anywhere
else except in Guardiagrele.
Rapino is just a short distance away and offers further
temptation with its traditional pasticci cakes with a deliciously
creamy filling. At Fara Filiorum Petri, the
local people celebrate the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate
on the night of 16th January, with a special cake called
serpentone, that is filled with dark chocolate cream.
In Pretoro local artisan products help to keep traditional
culinary customs alive. The carraturi is an extraordinary
piece of kitchen equipment that is similar
to a guitar in that it is made out of wood and steel
strings. It is still used to day to make fresh maccheroni
pasta (the finely-rolled sheets of pasta dough are
pushed through the strings with a rolling pin), which is
delicious with a rich lamb sauce.
Lanciano is another small gastronomic capital with

L’artigianato di Pretoro contribuisce a
mantenere viva l’arte culinaria tradizionale.
Qui, infatti, vedono tuttora la luce
quegli straordinari attrezzi in legno e fili
d’acciaio (che ricordano una chitarra e
dialettalmente sono detti carraturi) su cui
la sfoglia è passata con un matterello per
ottenere maccheroni freschi dalla sezione
quadrata, “alla chitarra” appunto,
da condire con un ricco ragù di agnello.
Lanciano è un’altra piccola capitale gastronomica:
polo di riferimento per le
fiere agroalimentari, condivide con Castelfrentano
e altri comuni limitrofi il privilegio
di poter produrre bocconotti
frentani, ovvero pasticciotti di pasta
frolla, di forma troncoconica rovesciata,
farciti con cioccolato, uova, zucchero,
cannella e mandorle tostate. La città rivendica
inoltre la paternità de lu rentrocelo,
un formato di pasta simile ad uno
spaghettone da condire con un sugo di
castrato.
Il patrimonio gastronomico dell’interno
chietino presenta tra l’altro elaborazioni
come i fumanti arrosticini di castrato o
pecora, da consumare a decine, le soffici
pallotte cace e ove (polpette di formaggio,
uova e pane raffermo condite
con salsa di pomodoro) o l’intensa coratella
d’agnello con uova e formaggio,
la pizz’ e ffòjje con farina gialla e verdure
di campo, il fiadone di formaggio, il cif e
ciaf di maiale, il pane casereccio impastato
con lievito madre naturale e cotto

popular farmers markets and food festivals throughout
the year. Together with Castelfrentano, it produces
bocconotti frentani, made of shortcrust pastry and
filled with eggs, chocolate, sugar, cinnamon and
toasted almonds; they look a little like upside-down
truncated cones. The city is also famous for a type of
pasta called lu rentrocelo, similar to thick spaghetti, it
is eaten with mutton sauce.
Spiedini (small pieces of ewe’s meat cooked on skewers)
is a traditional dish of inland Chieti that has an extraordinarily
rich gastronomic heritage. The light and
fluffy palotte cace e ove, (basically cheese balls in
tomato sauce) are particularly moreish, but other traditional
dishes include coratella d’agnello with eggs
and cheese (the main ingredient is lamb offal), pizz’ e
ffòjje with cornflour and wild vegetables, cheese pie,
pork cif e ciaf, traditionally baked bread, fresh spicy
peperoncino, truffles, sheep’s cheese, ricotta cheese,
caciocavalli and scamorze cheeses, honey, wine tarallucci
biscuits and vino cotto, an intense dessert wine,
juicy cherries from Giuliano Teatino, liqueurs and afterdinner
drinks such as ratafia, made from amarene
cherries and red Montepulciano wine, and centerbe,
distilled from aromatic mountain herbs.
Pork also plays an important role in the area’s gastronomic
tradition. Apart from the enormous choice of
different types of sausages, fresh and dried liver,
pressed salami and cured hams, there is one particular
dish that every visitor to the region must try. It is
called the Ventricina del Vastese, and can only be
found in the villages nestled in the hills and foothills
between Scerni-Cupello and Schiavi d’Abruzzo. This
cured meat delicacy is held in such high esteem that
it has its own Academia to protect and guarantee product
quality. The pigs that provide the meat are bred in
optimal conditions and come from the same area. The
meat, which is contained in a natural sacking (eg. pig’s
bladder), is minced and spiced with peppers and fennel
seeds. It is left to dry and mature for not less than
100 days. When it is ready, it is absolutely delicious
and has a pleasing spicy taste. Carpineto Sinello is a

liquori e digestivi come ratafia (a

E questo stesso patrimonio gastronomico
incontra vertici inaspettati nella
cultura del maiale. Insieme a salsicciotti,
salsicce “di carne” e di fegato fresche e
secche (anche sottolio), coppa di testa,
salami pressati e altri prodotti, gli intenditori
dovrebbero degustare una delizia
esclusiva addentrandosi nell’entroterra
vastese. In un pugno di paesi della zona
collinare e pedemontana che si estende
da Scerni-Cupello ai rilievi di Schiavi
d’Abruzzo, la regina della tavola è la Ventricina
del Vastese, tutelata anche da
un’omonima Accademia. L’insaccato si
ottiene idealmente da suini allevati a livello
familiare nelle stesse terre di produzione,
utilizzando tagli magri di prima
qualità con l’aggiunta del 25-30% di
grasso nobile, il tutto tagliato rigorosamente
al coltello. La speziatura è a base
di peperone trito dolce e piccante e semi
di finocchio (e pepe). Dopo l’insaccatura
in budello naturale l’asciugatura e la stagionatura
dura non meno di 100 giorni
per regalare fette arancio-rossastre profumate,
consistenti e piacevolmente piccanti.
E a Carpineto Sinello, poche
centinaia di abitanti e la fiera consapevolezza
di far parte di un terroir d’elezione
gastronomica, c’è addirittura un
Museo etnoantropologico del maiale.
Il menù territoriale à la carte presenta
anche numerose località della fascia collinare
e costiera del Chietino. Tra vigneti,

tiny place with just a few hundred inhabitants, but it is
so proud of its gastronomic heritage, it even has its
own Pig Museum.
Another gastronomic itinerary leaves from Francavilla
al Mare in the north of the Province. Travelling down
between vineyards and orchards, sometimes touching
the coast, sometimes venturing further inland towards
the hills, there are many localities offering fine
dining experiences.
Ortona, being a port city, really comes into its own as
the place to go for seafood. It also has annoia (cured
meat) and delicious cakes, called neole that are filled
with grape jam. Ortona, together with other nearby
towns such as Tollo, Arielli, Canosa Sannita, Frisa
are all famous for their delicious grapes, in particular
the white Regina (or Pergolone) and Cardinal.
The main headquarters of the Enoteca Regionale
d’Abruzzo are located in Ortona.
Travelling between Ortona and Fossacesia, visitors
will come across the citrus groves of the Costa dei
Trabocchi. The oranges grown here are an extremely
old variety; they were first brought to the region by
Jewish refugees seeking refuge under the Reign of
Naples. The groves extend down the coastline for
about 15 kilometres, and as well as oranges, lemons
and mandarins also grow in abundance. And this being
the Costa dei Trabocchi, in the summertime it is possible
to enjoy a quite unique dining experience by having
a meal of fresh fish on one of the trabocchi.
In Vasto, the prized local artichokes of Cupello are the
perfect accompaniment to Ventricina del Vastese.
More culinary delights include fried fish (scapece) that
have first been marinated in a golden sauce of saffron
and vinegar and an exceptional fish broth, called
brodetto alla vastese. The soup is made in a large
earthenware pot and is a wonderful combination of
tomatoes, garlic, sweet fresh red peppers, oil, salt,
parsley, and in a feast of aromas and flavours, pieces
of cod, sole, red mullet, scorpion fish, octopus and
cuttlefish are gradually added to the steaming pot.

altre tappe importanti, ora scostandosi dal litorale ora riprendendo la linea
di costa.
I filari di Ripa Teatina e Miglianico anticipano quelli di Ortona. La cittadina
portuale, oltre ai suoi piatti di mare, alle dolci neole (o ferratelle o pizzelle)
farcite con marmellata d’uva e all’insaccato annoia, in fatto di sapori deve
la sua reputazione proprio all’uva, che in questa zona, insieme con Tollo,
Arielli, Canosa Sannita, Frisa ed altri comuni, è particolarmente rinomata
anche per vitigni destinati al consumo da tavola quali Regina bianca (o Pergolone)
e Cardinal. Non va scordato, poi, che ad Ortona ha sede l’Enoteca
Regionale d’Abruzzo.
E tra Ortona e Fossacesia, i filari di tanto in tanto cedono il passo agli
agrumi della Costa dei Trabocchi: vecchie varietà di arance importate da
profughi sefarditi rifugiatisi nel Regno di Napoli, mandarini e limoni raccolti
a mano profumano un tratto di litorale di circa 15 chilometri. D’estate, poi,
alcuni trabocchi diventano luoghi insoliti dove assaporare una cena di
pesce avvolti dal blu del mare.
A Vasto, infine, i pregiati carciofi locali, che legano la loro fama al vicino comune
di Cupello, e la già citata ventricina fanno da corollario ad altro. Qui
infatti si sosta per gustare con meditata alternanza ora un boccone agro di
scapece, ovvero grossi tagli di pesce fritto marinati in una salsa dorata di
aceto e zafferano, ora un buon piatto di brodetto alla vastese. In questa
zuppa cucinata nel largo tegame di coccio, a pomodoro, spicchi d’aglio, peperone
dolce rosso fresco, olio, sale, prezzemolo, si mescolano progressivamente,
in una festa di profumi, merluzzi, sogliole, triglie, gallinella,
qualche polipo o seppiolina, cicale di mare…riservando a ciascuno il suo
tempo di cottura.
