COPIA OMAGGIO
è una produzione: Xiphonia coop. a r. l.
Secondo la leggenda
l’arcipelago che si trova
di fronte l’abitato di Acitrezza
è il frutto della collera
del ciclope Polifemo
che scagliò degli enormi
massi contro Ulisse e le
sue navi, dopo che era
stato accecato dall’eroe
greco.
queste formazioni nelle spettacolari
forme che possiamo osservare oggi. Le Isole
Ciclopi fanno parte dell’omonima riserva integrale
gestita dal CUTGANA e le acque che
le circondano rientrano nelle zone “A” e “B”
dell’Area Marina Protetta Isole dei Ciclopi.
Isole Ciclopi
According to the legend,
the archipelagos
that can be found in Trezza’s
waters is the fruit of
the Cyclops Polyphemus’
fury that led him to hurl
enormous rocks at Ulysses
and his ships as the
Homeric hero escaped
after having blinded the
giant. Actually the Ciclopi
(Cyclops’) Islands, that comprise the Lachea
Island (with a surface slightly larger that 5
acres), three Faraglioni and five different sized
rocks, all made of basaltic lava stone,
are the remains of Mount Etna’s first eruptions.
Approximately 500 thousand years ago,
the area that today stretches from Etna’s volcanic
cone to the sea, used to be a really
large pre-Etna gulf. However, an intense, underwater
volcanic activity introduced magma
into the sea. This caused the seabed to emerge
(a movement that is still in progress today)
and led to the formation of the majestic
structures covered in a clay, which has been
“cooked by the magma”: the marl. Hundreds
of thousands of years of erosion, brought on
both by the sea and by the wind, have modelled
these structures into the spectacular
sinuous shapes that we can observe today.
The Ciclopi Islands are now part of the homonymous
natural reserve, managed by the
CUTGANA and the waters that surround the
geological structures make up the A and B zones
of the Protected Marine Area (Area Marina
Protetta) of the Isole dei Ciclopi.
utilizzata. Molteplici
sono i reperti archeologici
che sono stati
rinvenuti sia sulla
sommità dell’isola,
sia nello specchio
di mare antistante.
L’isola Lachea, di
origine subvulcanica
come tutto il resto dell’arcipelago, presenta
delle formazioni geologiche molto particolari;
particolarissimo e bellissimo esempio
di sauro endemico.
Isola Lachea
The first sign of man’s presence on Lachea
Island takes us as far back as the Sicanians, but
also the Sicels (who left behind many tombs),
the Phoenicians (who probably built an emporium
for fish trade), the Greeks and the Romans
are known to have inhabited it. A large
variety of archaeological
artefacts has been found
on the island as well as
in the expanse of sea
before it. The Lachea
Island has a sub-volcanic
origin like the rest of the
archipelagos and is home
to rather particular geological
formations: other than the columnar
basalts that can be found on the southern side
of the island, on the northern side we can find
large circular holes, created by the swirling
movements of the waves that were loaded
with solid debris and pebbles, the same kind
of cavities you would get if you were to put a
pebble in a small hole and then start swirling
it round and round with great fury and power,
as if it were a screw. The Lachea Island is also
important for the flora and the fauna that
it hosts. In particular, there is a reptile that
exists solely on this island, probably because
it was separated from its cousins on land and
gave rise, over the years, to a new species: the
Podarcis Sicula Ciclopica, a beautiful and rare
specimen of endemic lizard.
Faraglioni e Faragghiuneddi
stazionano tutto l’anno.
La forma particolare
dei faraglioni è
dovuta dalla presenza
di pillows lave e
basalti colonnari che
nel faraglione grande
raggiungono dimensioni
considerevoli.
Proprio sul faraglione
grande è presente, fin dal 1954, una statua
marmorea della Vergine Maria, opera dello
scultore locale Saro Piazza, raggiungibile
I faraglioni piccoli (faragghiuneddi in
Siciliano) sono delle bellissime formazioni
geologiche che si trovano a ridosso della
panoramicissima piazza Turi Ferro sul lungomare
dei Ciclopi. Si sono formati nello
stesso periodo e nella stessa maniera delle
Isole Ciclopi, ma sono di dimensioni ridotte
e a ridosso della costa. La particolarità di
queste formazioni è, oltre alla presenza dei
rari basalti colonnari obliqui , la forma che
il vento gli ha dato. Sono stati modellati con
delle forme stravaganti ed uniche rendendoli
meta ambita dei viaggiatori che, nel XVIII
secolo, intraprendevano il Grand Tour.
According to the legend, the three Faraglioni
were hurled by the Cyclops Polyphemus
against Ulysses’ ships as he got away; actually,
they are the most splendid embodiment
of Mount Etna’s first eruptions. They rise high
above sea level for many dozens of metres
and represent the
starting point for the
fishing rounds of seabirds
that nest there
throughout the year.
The particular shape
of the Faraglioni can
be attributed to the
lava pillows and the
basalt columns that,
on the Big Faraglione,
Foto: FedericoCoco.it
reach considerable
heights. Furthermore
on the Big Faraglione, it is possible to admire
a marble statue of Virgin Mary, a work of
the local sculptor Saro Piazza, located there
since 1954. The statue can be reached via a
stone staircase; the statue’s platform offers
a breathtaking and mesmerizing view.
The small Faraglioni (in Sicilian Faragghiuneddi)
are beautiful geological formations
that can be found right in front of the panoramic
Turi Ferro square, along the Lungomare
dei Ciclopi. They were formed in the
same way and during the same period as the
Ciclopi Islands, they are however smaller and
attached to the coast. Apart from the presence
of rare oblique columnar basalts, the
other interesting thing about the “Faraghiuneddi”
is the conformation conferred by the
wind; the stone has been carved into unique
and extravagant shapes that make the “Faragghiuneddi”
a must-see attraction.
Dopo essersi attardati all’interno
dell’antro in attesa
del ritorno del proprietario
scoprono che si tratta di un
mostro, con un occhio solo,
per nulla ospitale. Dopo che
il Ciclope ha divorato diversi
greci, Ulisse decide di fargli
assaggiare del vino. Polifemo
estasiato dal sapore della bevanda
va a prendere dell’uva
per farne dell’altra. Durante
l’assenza di Polifemo Ulisse e
i suoi compagni arroventano
ed appuntiscono un tronco
d’ulivo. Una volta che il Ciclope
ha bevuto altro vino,
chiede ad Ulisse il suo nome
-e l’astuto greco risponde
Nessuno- e poi si addormenta ubriaco. A quel
Costretto a far pascolare
Acitrezza.
L’Odissea
Foto: FedericoCoco.it
Odyssey - Book IX: it’s probably one of
the Books which are richest in pathos of the
entire poem of Homer. Ulysses, after having
reached the coast with his journey companions,
goes on a round of exploration with
a bunch of soldiers and enters
the cave of the Cyclops
Polyphemus. After having
waited inside a while for the
inhabitant of the cave, they
discover that the owner is
a giant one-eyed monster
who doesn’t really appreciate
their company. After
seeing the Cyclops devour
many Greek men, Ulysses
decides to make him taste
some vine. Polyphemus is
delighted by the taste of
the drink and goes to find
some grapes to force them
to make some more; before
leaving, he closes the
opening of the cave with a
big, heavy rock. While he is
away, Ulysses and his fellow men sharpen and
burn the end of an olive tree trunk. Once the
Cyclops is back and has drunk more vine, he
asks Ulysses his name and the cunning Greek
answers “Nobody”, after which the Cyclops,
completely drunk, falls asleep. At this point
the Greeks blind him with the pointed, burning
trunk and when the screaming Polyphemus
asks his brothers for help by yelling that
“Nobody” blinded him, none of the Cyclops
come to his aid. After some time he realizes
that he is forced to open the entrance to let
out his sheep to graze and Ulysses and his
companions manage to get out by attaching
themselves to the bellies of the animals.
Once outside Ulysses reveals his real name
and Polyphemus, completely outraged, hurls
huge rocks against the Greek ships, rocks
that, as legend has it, are what we call Acitrezza’s
Faraglioni.
Basalti colonnari e pillows
Acitrezza ebbero inizio circa 500 mila anni
all’interno dell’argilla permise al magma
di modellarsi nelle particolari formazioni
esagonali dei Basalti Colonnari che si trovano
sui Faraglioni ed all’interno dell’Antico
culturale Centro Studi Acitrezza
ispirati dagli studi
del Prof. Giuseppe Palumbo
Acitrezza’s territory is one of the world’s
most important places when it comes down
to geology. Etna’s first eruptions occurred in
this area and the remains of the time comprise
the Lachea Island, the Faraglioni of the
Cyclops, the columnar basalts and the lava
pillows. The first intrusive eruptions below
Acitrezza’s clay seabed started approximately
five hundred thousand years ago; it is
because of the nature of the seabed that
we have these curious formations today: the
cooling down of the magma within the clay
allowed it to take the particular shape of the
hexagonal basalt columns that can be found
on the Faraglioni and inside the Ancient Malavoglia
Harbour. On top of the columns, lava
pillows can be found (even though most of
them have been torn away by the destructive
force of the sea, some are still visible towards
the north side of Acitrezza). This “cooked”
clay takes the name of marl and is visible as
a white coloured rock on top of the Lachea
Island (where one can also find the Marmitte
dei Pigmei, created by the pebbles and the
movements of the waves) and also on top of
the Big Faraglione; however, the sea tore it
away from the other Faraglioni (even though
a few traces can be found between the
crepes of the pillows and between the basalt
columns: this proves once again that they
were formed below sea level and emerged
due to the upheaval of Acitrezza’s seabed).
Other things worth seeing, of incomparable
beauty and relevance, are the Oblique Basalt
Columns and the rocks modelled by the wind,
which can be found in the “Faragghiuneddi”
(small Faraglioni in Sicilian) on the south side
of Acitrezza.
mostrano come nelle disposizioni
erano rispettate le gerarchie. Il
piano superiore era quello deputato
agli armamenti per la difesa
dello specchio d’acqua antistante
le Isole dei Ciclopi. Nel 1798
l’armamento era costituito da
due cannonotti, 25 rotola di polvere
da sparo, 18 palle di ferro e
16 palle di pietra.
Aci e Galatea
Bastione
Aci and Galatea: this story belongs to
Ovid’s “Metamorphosis” collection and
talks about the love between the handsome
shepherd Aci and the nymph Galatea. Unfortunately
even the Cyclops Polyphemus is in
love with the beautiful Galatea and tries to
seduce her in every possible way only to find
that her heart belongs to the shepherd Aci.
Once Polyphemus finds out about the love
between the two, in a fit of anger, he throws
a huge rock against Aci and kills him. At this
point Neptune turns Aci’s blood into a river
(that once flowed through Acitrezza as well)
and Galatea, whose name means pure white,
into sea foam and in this way the two lovers
can and would meet and join for eternity.
Faraglioni’s fortress, more commonly
known as the Bastione is located at the heart
of the Acitrezza’s historic centre. It was part
of a more complex system of fortifications
built by the prince Stefano Riggio of Campofiorito,
founder of Acitrezza, and this is the
last of his remains. The current structure is
well preserved and is built upon a more ancient
Byzantine sepulchral structure which
itself is still preserved inside
the defensive tower, where it
is still possible to see the niches
that were used for the
deposition of the dead. In the
entrance there are two tombs
against the wall that show
how, even in the layout, the
hierarchies were respected.
The top floor was used for the
storage of weapons used to
defend the blue sea in front
of the Ciclopi Islands. In 1798
the weaponry was made up of
two cannons, 25 rolls of gun
powder, 18 balls of iron and 16
balls of stone.
Francesco Rosi e Franco Zeffirelli,
ad Acitrezza con attori non professionisti,
che recitano in lingua
siciliana, scelti tra gli abitanti del
luogo. E’ liberamente tratto dal
romanzo verghiano e doveva fare
I Malavoglia
La Terra Trema
“I Malavoglia”, published in 1881, is the
masterpiece of the Sicilian verismo writer Giovanni
Verga. It talks about the lives and events
of the Toscano family, a hard working family
ironically known as “Malavoglia”. The novel is
set in Acitrezza and in fact the setting itself
has a great importance to the story because
the small, static world of Acitrezza doesn’t
and will not change even after the times of
the Malavoglia family. Another fundamental
thing in the narration is the economic condition
of Sicily that, after the Unification of Italy,
is reduced to the ground and is fighting to improve
its conditions even though, according
to Verga, it has no chance. The “Moral of the
Oyster” (already introduced in his 1880 short
story “Fantasticherie”, also set in Acitrezza) in
“I Malavoglia” reaches its peak: the members
of the family who are determined to improve
their social and economic conditions are
constantly beaten by an adverse fate against
which they have no power: Those who survive
their fate are those who adapt to their conditions.
“La Terra Trema” (The Earth Trembles)
is the masterpiece of Italian nerorealism. It
was directed in 1947 by the Milanese Luchino
Visconti, along with Francesco Rosi and Franco
Zeffirelli and it was shot in Acitrezza with
non-professional actors who spoke in Sicilian
language, chosen amongst the local residents.
It is freely based on Verga’s novel and
was supposed to have been part of a cycle
of three movies. Due to political disapproval,
just the first of the three chapters was financed.
La Terra Trema (the sea episode) most
exquisitely tells the story of the exploitation
and enrichment on behalf of the big fish market
dealers against the will and knowledge of
the poor fishermen of Acitrezza.
Chiesa San Giovanni
La chiesa parrocchiale San Giovanni Battista
venne benedetta il 14 ottobre 1696. Prese
L’attuale chiesa, costruita negli ultimi anni
balaustre marmoree, probabilmente appartenute
alla precedente chiesa di San Giuseppe.
All’interno dell’edificio è possibile ammirare
stata affrescata in sei medaglioni raffiguranti
la vita di San Giovanni Battista da V.Sciuto
negli ultimi anni del ‘700. In alto sta la cantorìa
con un’ artistica balconata lignea in pieno
stile barocco. In essa è collocato un organo
realizzato nel 1781 dai maestri organari Platania
di Acireale. Proseguendo per la navata
principale troviamo un altare dove è collocata
una bellissima statua di Santa Teresa, la
fonte battesimale ed un artistico pulpito in
legno.
dell’addolorata.
The church dedicated to Saint John the
Baptist was blessed on the 14th of October
1696. It took the place of the old church of
Saint Joseph. The new church was rebuilt at
the end of the17th century decorated with
stuccos and frescoes in the beginning of the
18th. In 1889 it was extended thanks to the
construction of a small, side aisle. The baroque
façade is surmounted by two belfries.
The main marble altar was built during the
17th century and in front of it, there are two
marble balustrades, probably already present
in the old church of Saint Joseph. Inside
the church we can find some prestigious
paintings by Mancini and unknown artists.
The vault was frescoed by Vincenzo Sciuto,
at the end of the 18th century, with six medallions
representing the Baptist’s life. The
choir area has a finely carved baroque wooden
balcony and holds an organ which was
built in 1781 by the organ masters Platania,
in Acireale. Further down the nave we can
find an altar with a beautiful statue of Saint
Therese, the baptismal font and an artistic
wooden pulpit. In a niche in the aisle we can
find the statue of Mother Mary , co-patroness
of Acitrezza, made by carver Angelo Musumeci
in 1911. Further down in the aisle, a
wooden statue of Saint Joseph, the ancient
patron of Acitrezza, is placed inside another
small altar: this one was probably present
in the old church that was destroyed by the
quake. At the end of the aisle there is the altar
of the Crucifixion, flanked by the statues
of Saint John the Evangelist and Our Lady
of Sorrows. Giovanni Verga, in the novel “I
Malavoglia”, probably made reference to it
when he mentioned the altar of Our Lady of
Sorrows. Inside the sacristy we can find some
paintings of the past parish priests of Acitrezza
and a precious marble washbasin made by
Domenico Alati in 1891, upon which we can
find Acitrezza’s coat of arms.
Ogni anno, durante le celebrazioni
del patrono S.Giovanni
Battista, il 24 giugno, si svolge la
tradizionale pantomima “U pisci
a mari”, rito propiziatorio e parodia
della pesca del pesce spada.
Sino al 1870, il paese veniva
addobbato con pennoni e bandiere
e illuminato con lucerne di
terracotta. Oggi “U Pisci a Mari”
si è vestito di altri colori. Alcuni pescatori, indossanti
stracci color rosso sangue, iniziano la cala
della barca. Si comincia la pesca “du pisci”, rappresentato
da un esperto nuotatore che furtivamente
si immerge nello specchio d’acqua teatro
della pantomima, nascondendosi tra le numerose
imbarcazioni colme di gente. Dopo vari tentativi
a scappare. I pescatori imprecano contro la mala
sorte.
A pochi metri dall’approdo fugge definitivamente,
scomparendo tra i flutti. I pescatori, in preda
allo sconforto, capovolgono la barca chiudendo
l’ennesima rappresentazione della continua lotta
dell’uomo per sopravvivere in questi luoghi.
“U pisci a mari” Since 1750 in Acitrezza,
there is the pantomime of
“u pisci a mari”, propitiatory
ritual, parody of the
sword-fish fishing. This pantomime
is staged during
the festivity of Saint John
the Baptist (24th June).
Elder remember that until
to 1870, the village came
adorned with pennons and flags and illuminated
by terracotta oil lamp. Today “U Pisci a mari” is
different. Some fishermen, wearing red rags, put
the boat on the sea. “U pisci” is represented by
an expert swimmer who swims in the part of the
sea that is theatre of the pantomime. He hides
among the numerous boats. After some tries, the
fish is catched and put on the boat, but it slips out
of fishermen’s hands. The hunt for fish goes on.
The fish is caught and hurt for the second time.
Two fishermen steadily hold the fish man by arms
and legs and while they try to kill him by a big
knife, he is conscious of his destiny. But at few
metres from the coast it slips out of fishermen’s
hands definitively, disappearing among the boats.
The audience shout, the fishermen discouraged
overturn the boat, young people diving into the
sea. Under an hot sun, the representation of the
eternal fight to survive in these places ends.
Lavatoi e cantiere navale
I lavatoi pubblici di Acitrezza vennero immortalati
nel romanzo verghiano “i Malavoglia”.
Purtroppo furono eliminati negli anni
fontana in pietra lavica.
nell’attuale posizione all’interno del
Verghiano “I Malavoglia” e
dove è stato immortalato
in alcune toccanti scene
del film neorealista “La Terra
Trema”. Ancora oggi vi
operano l’esperto Salvatore
Rodolico ed il figlio Giovanni
coadiuvati da Nuccio Rodolico.
Acitrezza’s public toilets were also described
in Verga’s novel “I Malavoglia”. Unfortunately
they were removed during the
70’s and today a very small portion remains
standing: a fountain made out of lava stone.
The shipyard was built in the middle of the
19th century by Salvatore Rodolico, master
carpenter, who specialized in fishing boat
building. The fishing boats were decorated,
as suggested by tradition, with the technique
of the “pingisanti”. Before relocating to
where it is now, the shipyard was situated in
the southern part of the village. It was even
mentioned in the novel “I Malavoglia” as well
as in the movie “La Terra Trema” by Luchino
Visconti. Even today, the
shipyard is managed by
Salvatore Rodolico and his
son Giovanni, in collaboration
with Nuccio Rodolico.
Inside the structure, it is
still possible to sense the
magical atmosphere of a
charming profession.
Roberto Rimini ( Palermo
24 marzo1888 - Acitrezza 16
febbraio 1971) è il pittore
della luce e del mare, della
sua Sicilia che amò in modo
appassionato e questo suo
amore ha il suo pieno compimento
negli anni vissuti
ad Acitrezza. La formazione
artistica di Rimini si compie
nel fondere la plasticità
della pittura ottocentesca
napoletana e il colorismo
tonale della pittura veneta
in dipinti dove forma e colore
sono plasmati e illuminati
dal sole della sua Sicilia. Tenne la sua ultima
mostra ad Acitrezza, nel 1966, l’Ente del
turismo inaugurando i nuovi locali della “Pro
Loco” volle tributare omaggio all’artista,
che, come scrisse, Saverio Fiducia “era stato
indotto a bagnare quotidianamente i pennelli
negli anni ‘50. I soggetti di Rimini sono svariati:
ritratti di familiari, ma anche di personaggi
illustri come G. Verga, E.Maganuco,
e luci.
Roberto Rimini Roberto Rimini (Palermo,
Testo di Licia Maria Castiglione
24th March 1888 – Acitrezza,
16th February 1971) is the
painter of light and sea, he has
painted his beloved Sicily in a
passionate way, a passion that
reached its greatest height during
the years he spent in Acitrezza.
Rimini’s artistic training
and development consists in fusing
the plasticity of nineteenth
century Neapolitan painting and
the tonal colouring of Venetian
art within paintings in which
shape and colour are modelled
and illuminated according to his
Sicily’s sun. He held his last exhibition in Acitrezza
in 1966: the Bureau of Tourism, during the inauguration
of the new premises of its “Pro Loco”,
decided to pay homage to the artist who, in the
words of Saverio Fiducia, “was forced to wet his
paintbrushes everyday under the skies of Trezza”.
Rimini has a vast variety of subjects: family
portraits but also portraits of illustrious personae
such as G. Verga, E. Maganuco, F. De Roberto,
scenes from the countryside lived and worked by
the farmers, still life, floral vases and maritime
scenery consisting in paintings in which the sea
has been captured in moments both of calm or
during sea storms, Trezza’s fishermen are represented
during different phases of their work, all of
them bathed by a light which is almost blinding,
that whitens the colour and gives a luminosity
which is always changing and unstable. In fact,
the essential components of Roberto Rimini’s art
are the light, the sun and his Sicily’s sky and he
finds this white light in Acitrezza, in the perpetual
movement of the sea and in its games of light and
colours. Acitrezza’s sea, the one and the same
that brings misfortunes to Padron ‘Ntoni and the
Malavoglia, instills calm and serenity in Rimini’s
paintings. The figures represented by Rimini are
crafted out of colour and immersed in the light;
he paints with the sun in front of him, against the
direction of light, seemingly allowing the light
itself to directly intervene on the objects while
using rapid and decisive brushstrokes which are
a trademark of his artistic activity throughout his
career, in all of his artistic evolutions. Critics have
frequently compared him to Giovanni Verga but
this is clearly not the case: Rimini uses a modern
style of painting that is derived from an innovative
use of the light-colour duo, which confers a
great expressive and emotional power to all of
his characters and landscapes; in his works on
Acitrezza, the fishermen are not the “beaten”,
as in Verga’s Malavoglia, but men that live and
viscerally love their sea, Acitrezza’s sea.
Tradizioni culinarie
La cucina tradizionale trezzota è, naturalmente,
basata sulle ricette legate al mare. Sin
freddi”. Già ai tempi dei Romani si bevevano
bevande fredde mischiando dei succhi con la
neve dell’Etna.
l’unico a poterli realizzare. Il cafè Procope,
primo cafè d’Europa, divenne un importante
centro d’incontro della nobiltà francese. La
scelta sui gusti era varia e comprendeva anche
le acque gelate considerate progenitrici delle
granite.
Acitrezza’s traditional cuisine is, obviously,
based on seafood recipes. On the Lachea
Island, as far back as the Roman Empire, a
sauce made of different sea species and fish
interiors called “garum” used to be made.
However, after the founding of Acitrezza and
the birth of its commercial and fishing port,
the town’s cuisine imported a large variety
of dishes, still prepared today with that old
knowledge and expertise. “Beccafico” sardines,
pasta with sea urchin sauce, dozens of
ways to cook fresh fish not to mention the
“masculine” pickles, salted or conserved under
oil anchovies (also mentioned in Verga’s “I
Malavoglia”) all have their share in making Acitrezza’s
cuisine a really tasty attraction.
Ice-cream as we know it
owes its consistency and fame
to Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli,
who was born in Palermo
which, at the time, was the
capital of the Kingdom of Sicily
and later moved to Acitrezza
(in the early 17th century)
where he helped his uncle by
improving his inventions in the
field of cold food products.
Procopio dei Coltelli used sugar (which had
started to spread rapidly in Europe after the
colonisation of the “New World”) instead of
honey, giving the sherbets a whole new consistency.
Furthermore, by using salt along with
ice, he invented the world’s first ice-cream
maker (“gelatiera”). He decided then to take
his invention with him to Paris where, in 1686,
he opened a café called “Le Procope”. Louis
XIV, King of France, conferred a royal licence
to this Sicilian cook for his ice cream and in
this way, he was the only one authorized to
make them. The café “Le Procope”, probably
the first café in Europe, became an important
meeting point for the French aristocracy. The
variety of flavours was vast and included even
the frozen, flavoured waters that can be considered
the ancestors of the modern granita.
