• Check the temperature under the arm and,<br />

if needed, give an antipyretic<br />

• Give the child only liquids for 3-4 hours<br />

and call the pae<strong>di</strong>atrician in the meantime<br />

• Liquids must be given at room temperature<br />

and with a teaspoon every 4-5 minutes.<br />

Begin fee<strong>di</strong>ng the child solid foods<br />

gradually. Start with simple foods such<br />

as rice, pasta, white meat, apples and<br />

bananas, and then serve milk<br />

• Be extremely careful to maintain proper<br />

hygiene during the illness. Whoever takes<br />

care of the child must wash the hands<br />

thoroughly to prevent the infection from<br />

sprea<strong>di</strong>ng to the rest of the family.<br />

• The number, quantity and consistency of<br />

the stools<br />

• The number and nature of vomiting episodes<br />

• Whether the child is drowsy or, on the<br />

other hand, wants to play<br />

• Whether the child has dark circles around<br />

the eyes or is pale, and whether he or<br />

she urinates sufficiently<br />

• The child must continue to drink small,<br />

frequent sips of fluids such as saline<br />

solution, tea, water or chamomile tea. If<br />

the child refuses to eat after 3-4 hours<br />

on a liquid <strong>di</strong>et, don’t become alarmed.<br />
