Tourists that come to Merano/Meran
have always greatly appreciated its mild
spring and its golden autumn. Those who
are thinking of coming to Merano seldom
if ever consider coming in winter. So why is
that? It is certainly the case that Meran/o
cannot compete with a large city when
it comes to cultural attractions and the
ski slopes are more suited to families and
gourmets than avid skiers. The Christmas
period tends to attract visitors from northern
Italian cities and regions, and Merano
as a year-round tourist destination does
not convince due to its lack of events and
attractions.
But slowly things are changing. The Merano
Marketing Company is doing a sterling job
in promoting Merano and the surrounding
area as a tourist destination with the
publication of its Meran-o Magazine, whose
winter issue aims to shine a spotlight on the
period from October to March.
So what should be the focus of the winter
issue? Well, the extraordinary architecture
of the Kursaal in Merano with a look back
into its history is a starting point. And then
there are features on the numerous events
that characterize Merano’s autumn, with
the chestnut trees in Tesimo/Tisens acting
as cultural-gastronomic ambassadors.
There is also a focus on the health profession,
where the themes of the sauna and
the health benefits of perspiration will be
examined. And then there is a focus on the
Christmas period and the Christmas Market.
And on alternative tourism opportunities
on the Val Senales/Schnalstal glacier.
And on eco-sustainable sports in the five
skiing areas around Merano and on specific
life stories in and around the area presented
by the artist and graphic designer, Renzo
Panfilo. As well as tips and news, useful information
and advice – all this is what is in
the winter issue. So as you can see, Merano
and its surrounding area most certainly do
have a lot to offer… even in the winter!
