Gli scavi nella grotta del Pino
La grotta cosiddetta del
Pino venne casualmente scoperta
in seguito a lavori edilizi riel 1994,
alla base del versante meridionale
del Cozzo dell'Uovo nel Vallo di
Diano, ed e attualmente in corso
di scavo. L'originario accesso e
stato in gran parte obliterato dalla
costruzione di un edificio modernoj
l'ingresso doveva esse¬re costituito
da un piccolo pozzo vertic ale apertosi
nei calcari fra ttura ti a causa
di uno sprofondamento della volta
della sottostante cavita. Alla base
di questo pozzo si estende un cono
detritico, alto 10 m e con diametro
alla base di circa 20 m. Esso occlude
gran parte della cavira, fatta
eccezione per la zona orientale,
topograficamente pili bassa e pili
lontana dall’ingressoj qui la grotta
si sviluppa per circa 20 m, il tetto
si abbassa e Ie pareti si restringono
divenendo presto impraticabili
La grotta del Pino e stata utilizzata
come grotta funeraria durante
l’eta del Bronzo antico e medio
(Protoap¬penninico B), da circa il
XXIV al XV secolo a.C.
Una breve ed occasionale
frequentazione in epoca storica e
datata, sulla base del rinvenimento
di una fibula a drago e di due fusaiole,
alla meta del VII secolo a.c.
Diverse decine di inumati sono stati
rinvenuti nella area centrale della
cavita, o in altre zone di accesso
piu’ difficile. La maggior parte
di essi non e pili in connessione
anatomica. Gli inumati e i corredi
sono stati ripetutamente spostati
per far luogo a successive deposizioni.
Al di sopra di essi, in uno dei
settori della cavita finora meglio
esplorati, e stato possibile identificare
lo scheletro di un capriolo che
era stato deposto, probabilmente
come ultima offerta rituale, successivamente
al dislocamento dei
resti stessi. Solo una sepoltura di un
individuo in connessione, accanto
al quale era stato sacrificato un
capretto, e stata finora rinvenuta al
di sotto di una bass a fessura nella
parete di fondo dell a cavita. Alle
fasi piu’ appar-tengono frammenti
ceramici di rozzo impasto con la
caratteristica superficie “rusticata”
e ciotole emisferiche di impasto
piu’ fine con ricca decorazione incisa
ricollegabili alla facies di Laterza,
diffusa in Puglia e Calabria,
ma Ie cui testimonianze sono ora
documentate in modo massiccio
anche lungo il versante medio
tirrenicoj all’antica eta del Bronzo
sono riferibili numerosi frammenti
di grandi vasi d’impasto decorati
con cordoni a rilievo che formano
complessi motivi. Ma la frequentazione
piu’ intensa e attribuibile
all’eta del Bronzo medio nelle sue
fasi iniziale e piena, definita in
area meridionale con il termine di
Protoappenninico (XVII-XV sec.
a.C.), mentre per il momento non
sono stati rinvenuti elementi della
fase terminale dello stile Appenninico.
Al Protoappenninico e
infatti attribuibile la maggior parte
delle ceramiche recuperate finora,
fra cui ciotole e tazze carenate
con Ie caratteristiche anse orizzontali
a rocchetto canaliculate e
anse verticali con sopraelevazione.
Tutta la ceramica trova confronti
diretti nelle immediate vicinanze,
nell’insediamento di Tufariello e
nella grotta Cardini a Praia a Mare.
Un’ascia e un pendaglio
di bronzo sono stati rinvenuti in
due distinte aree di scavo.
Alla stessa fase appartengono
anche i frammenti di vasi
di argilla molto fine e ben depurata
che in diversi casi recano una
decorazione a motivi geometrici
tracciati con pittura bruna opaca, di
tradizione mesoelladica egea, la cui
produzione perdura nelle prime fasi
del periodo miceneo (Miceneo I-II)
riferibili al XVI-XV see. a.C.
Excavations at Pino Cave
The Pino Cave was
discovered accidentally in 1994
during building work carried out
at the bottom of the southern
slopes of the Cozzo dell'Uovo
in the Vallo di Diano, and is
currently being excavated by the
Superintendency of Antiquities
of Salerno in collaboration with
the University of Naples "Federico
II". The original entrance
has practically been completely
obliterated by a modern building;
it must have consisted of a
small vertical shaft opened in
the limestone rock that had been
fractured by the collapse of the

At the bottom of
this shaft a debris cone, some 10
m high and with a base diameter
of about 20 m, fills most of the
cave, except for the eastern area,
which is topographically lower
and further from the entrance.
Here the cave extends for about
20 m, the roof is lower and the
walls converge progressively
until it soon becomes too narrow
to move in. The Pino Cave was
used as a funerary cave during

the Early and Middle Bronze
Age (Protoapennine B phase),
between about the 24th and the
15th century B.C. Short, sporadic
occupations in historical times
have been dated to around the
mid 7th century B.C. on the basis
of a dragon fibula and two spindle
whorls.Several dozen burials
have been found in the central
area of the cave, or in other more
inaccessible zones. The majority
of the skeletons are no longer in

anatomical connection; together
with grave goods they have systematically
been shifted to make

room for later depositions. On
top of them, in one of the hitherto
more completely explored
parts of the cave, it has been
possible to identify the skeleton
of a roe deer laid, probably as a
final ritual offering, after the final
rearrangement of the burials.

Only one burial of one
anatomically connected individual,
beside whom a kid had
been sacrificed, has been found
beneath a narrow fissure in the
wall at the bottom of the
cave. The earlier phases of the
utilization of the cave are characterized
by a coarse ware with
a typical 'rusticated' surface and
by more refined hemispherical
bowls with rich incised decoration
that may be linked to the
Laterza facies common in Puglia
and Calabria, for which however
massive documentation now
exists also along the middle
Tyrrhenian Sea side. The most
intense occupation dates to the
initial and advanced periods of
the Middle Bronze Age, defined
in the southern area with the
term of Protoapennine (l7th-15th
century B.C.), while for the time
being no elements of the
final phase of the period (Apennine)
have so far been found.
It is actually possible
to ascribe to the Protoapennine
the majority of the pottery types
discovered so far, including carinated
bowls and cups with their
characteristic horizontal cylinder,
notched, ax, trumpet and vertical
handles, as well as numerous
fragments of sherds decorated
with relief cordons with complex
motifs. All the sherds display
strong relations with the production
of the Tufariello Middle
Bronze Age village and with the
pottery from the Cardini Cave at
Praia a Mare.

L'annuncio del Papa dopo la ricognizione nel sarcofago
sotto l'omonima basilica romana: “Profonda emozione”

ROMA - Il Papa non
ha nascosto la sua “profonda
emozione” nel fare un annuncio
che rappresenta a suo modo
una tappa miliare nella storia
della Chiesa: è stata fatta la
prima ricognizione, attraverso
una sonda, nella tomba di San
Paolo, sotto l'omonima basilica
romana. Le analisi e i reperti
trovati, frammenti d'ossa, grani
d'incenso, un lino laminato d'oro,
hanno confermato - ha proclamato
Ratzinger - la tradizione
religiosa di quasi 20 secoli,
secondo cui, proprio in quel sarcofago,
vengono venerati i resti
dell'apostolo delle genti.
L'ATTENTA ANAL-
ISI NELL'ANNO PAOLINO
- L'Anno Paolino, dedicato
al bimillenario della nascita
di Paolo di Tarso, non poteva
concludersi oggi in modo più
degno. La Chiesa cattolica aveva
effettuato scavi e ricerche per individuare
con certezza la tomba
di Pietro, cardine della stessa
fede cattolica e del primato del
vescovo di Roma; attorno al
sarcofago di Paolo e di che cosa
contenesse, era sempre rimasto
invece un alone di incertezza.
Nella Basilica romana dedicata
all'apostolo delle genti, durante
una cerimonia ecumenica a cui
ha preso parte anche una delegazione
ortodossa da Costantinopoli
(Istanbul), Benedetto XVI
ha spiegato la recente e “attenta”
analisi scientifica. «Nel sarcofago
che non è mai stato aperto
in tanti secoli - ha raccontato il
pontefice - è stata praticata una
piccolissima perforazione per
produrre una speciale sonda mediante
la quale sono state rilevate
tracce di un prezioso tessuto di
lino colorato di porpora, laminato
di oro zecchino e di un tessuto di
colore azzurro con filamenti di
lino. È stata anche rilevata la presenza
di grani di incenso rosso e
di sostanze proteiche e calcaree».
L'ESAME DEL
CARBONIO 14 - “Inoltre - ha
proseguito - piccolissimi frammenti
ossei , sottoposti all'esame
del carbonio 14 da parte di
esperti ignari della loro provenienza
sono risultati appartenere
a persona vissuta tra il primo
e il secondo secolo”. “Ciò - ha
concluso - sembra confermare
l'unanime e incontrastata tradizione
che si tratti dei resti mortali
dell'apostolo Paolo. Tutto questo
riempie il nostro animo di profonda
emozione». Al suo fianco,
l'arciprete della Basilica, il card.
Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo,
che solo due giorni fa,
in una conferenza stampa in Vaticano,
si era limitato ad accennare
a progetti futuri di ricognizione.
Gli Atti degli Apostoli narrano
che Paolo fu catturato, su accusa
dei giudei del Tempio, verso
la fine degli anni 50 a Gerusalemme,
dove si era recato per
celebrare la Pentecoste insieme
ai cristiani locali. In quanto cittadino
romano, chiese di essere
giudicato a Roma, dove arrivò
nel 60-62, dopo essere stato per
anni agli arresti domiciliari a
Cesarea Marittima e al termine
di un viaggio rocambolesco, con
tanto di naufragio a Malta. San
Paolo fu probabilmente liberato e
poi arrestato nuovamente: il suo
martirio avvenne per decapitazione,
come si usava con i cittadini
romani, verso il 66-67 sulla via
Laurentina, in un posto chiamato
allora «Le tre taverne» e
divenuto oggi «Le tre fontane».
La sepoltura fu fatta sulla via
Ostiense, dove sorge la Basilica
di San Paolo Fuori le Mura. Già
dal secondo secolo d. C., si pregava
sulla tomba di Paolo, come
attesta il racconto di un presbitero
dell’epoca, tal Giaio. Da
allora la venerazione è proseguita
nei secoli, fino ai giorni nostri.
Certo, manca la possibilità di effettuare
prove scientifiche moderne
come la prova del Dna, ma
le analisi rivelate oggi dal papa
offrono un’importante conferma
alla tradizione religiosa.

TRA I VEGETARIANI"
LONDRA - E' un diffuso
luogo comune: mangiare
più frutta e verdura fa bene alla
salute. Ora una vasta ricerca
rivela che non solo ciò è vero,
ma chi fa una dieta vegetariana
ha meno probabilità di ammalarsi
di cancro rispetto a chi fa una

made no attempt to conceal his
profound emotion as he made
what is a landmark announcement
for the history of the
Church. A probe into St Paul’s
tomb, underneath the basilica
of San Paolo fuori le mura, has
made a preliminary identification.
The papal message said that
tests carried out and the remains
discovered, which include bone
fragments, grains of incense and
a piece of gold-sequinned linen,
confirm an almost 2,000-yearold
tradition of venerating the
apostle of the Gentile’s remains
in the sarcophagus.
METICULOUS ANAL-
YSIS IN PAULINE YEAR – The

the Pauline Year, dedicated to the
2,000th anniversary of St Paul’s
birth. The Catholic Church has in
the past excavated and investigated
to identify with certainty
the tomb of St Peter, pivotal to
the Catholic faith and primacy of

of St Paul and its contents.

the genealogical discontinuity
by testing samples of mitochondrial
DNA from remains of

CARBON DATING –
“Tiny fragments of bone were
found. After carbon dating
by experts who had not been
informed of their provenance,
the fragments were found to be
from an individual who lived in
the first or second century. This
appears to confirm the undisputed
tradition that they are the
mortal remains of the apostle
Paul. All this fills our spirit with
profound emotion”. At his side
was the dean of the basilica, Cardinal
Andrea Cordero Lanza di
Montezemolo, who just two days
ago at a Vatican press conference
said only that there were plans to
identify the remains in the future.
The Acts of the Apostles describe
how Paul was accused by the
Jews of the Temple and arrested
in the late 50s AD, after going to
Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost
with the local Christians. As a
Roman citizen, Paul asked to be
tried in Rome, where he arrived

then had an eventful voyage, during
which he was shipwrecked
on Malta. In all probability, St
Paul was freed and re-arrested.
He suffered martyrdom by

course not possible to carry out
modern scientific procedures,
such as DNA testing, but the
results presented by Benedict
XVI today provide significant
corroboration of the religious
tradition.

impressionanti: i vegetariani hanno
il 45 per cento di probabilità
in meno di ammalarsi di cancro
del sangue e un 12 per cento in
meno di ammalarsi di qualsiasi
tipo di cancro, rispetto a coloro
che fanno una dieta carnivora.

con grande rilievo dalla stampa
nazionale britannica, lo studio
ha seguito lo stato di salute di
61 mila persone nel corso di 12
anni. "Ricerche precedenti avevano
indicato che la carne può
aumentare il rischio di cancro
all'intestino, cosicché i nostri
risultati sono apparsi plausibili
da questo punto di vista", dice al
quotidiano Guardian di Londra la
dottoressa Naomi Allen, ricercatrice
del Cancer Research della
Oxford University e co-autrice
del rapporto. "Ma non sappiamo
perché il cancro del sangue ha
un'incidenza più bassa nei vegetariani".
La differenza, un 45 per
cento di probabilità di ammalarsi
in meno, è enorme, e riguarda sia
la leucemia che altri tipi di cancro
del sangue. Non solo, ma chi
si nutre di verdura, frutta e pesce,
evitando la carne, ha anche il 12
per cento di rischio in meno di
ammalarsi di qualsiasi altro tipo
di tumore, afferma la ricerca.
"Sono dati significativi",
osserva la dottoressa Allen, "anche
se vanno presi con un po' di
cautela poiché si tratta del primo
ampio studio di questo genere
in materia. Abbiamo bisogno di
farne altri e di saperne di più. Per
esempio dobbiamo scoprire quale
aspetto di una dieta a base di
verdura, frutta e pesce protegge
dal cancro. E dobbiamo stabilire
quanto influisce positivamente
una dieta vegetariana, così come
quanto influisce negativamente
una a base di carne". Lo studio
fa parte di un progetto internazionale
a lungo termine chiamato
"European Prospective Investigation
into Cancer and Nutrition",
che andrà avanti, ad Oxford e in
altri centri di ricerca sul cancro.
Altri studi hanno
comunque già dimostrato che
mangiare carne, o perlomeno
mangiarne troppa, può essere nocivo.
Non solo per la salute degli
umani, tanto per cominciare,
ma pure per quella del pianeta:
l'anno scorso un rapporto della
Commissione dell'Onu sul Cambiamento
Climatico ha esortato
a rinunciare alla carne almeno
una volta alla settimana poiché la
produzione di carne, ovvero gli
allevamenti di bovini, produce
da sola un quinto delle emissioni
di gas nocivi. Un rapporto della
World Cancer Research Fund,
dua nni or sono, ha raccomandato
di non mangiare più di 300
grammi di carne alla settimana a
causa del rapporto tra una dieta
altamente carnivora e il cancro
all'intestino. E nel 2005 uno
studio finanziato dal Medical
Research Council britannico e
dalla International Agency for
Research on Cancer, ha riscontrato
che mangiare due porzioni
di carne al giorno, l'equivalente
di un panino con la pancetta e
di una bistecca, aumenta del 35
per cento il rischio di cancro
all'intestino.

CERVELLO A VINCERE
UN'OLIMPIADE"
SUDORE, muscoli e
lacrime. Dopo mesi e mesi di
dura ed estenuante preparazione
arriva l'ultimo sforzo: la gara.
Una vittoria non è mai casuale.
Allenamento, duro allenamento.
Giorni interi a ripetere lo stesso
gesto atletico. Ma non si tratta
solo di preparazione fisica, anche
il cervello si modifica e migliora
le sue performance. È quanto
emerge da uno studio britannico
che ha cercato di mettere in luce
le modificazioni neurali e cognitive
prodotte dall'allenamento
degli atleti che ottengono eccellenti
risultati nelle più importanti
manifestazioni sportive.
La ricerca, firmata dal
neurologo Kielan Yarrow, docen-
te e ricercatore del dipartimento
di Psicologia della City University
di Londra, rivela che l'analisi
della mente di atleti di successo
può spiegare l'eccellenza
sportiva. Ciò potrebbe, in un
futuro prossimo, aprire la strada
a nuove e rivoluzionarie metodologie
di allenamento per
migliorare le loro performance.
La ricerca di Yarrow
si è concentrata sulle caratteristiche
dell'apprendimento
e del controllo del movimento
a livello del sistema nervoso
centrale. Secondo lo studioso
britannico, infatti, le abilità
proprie di questi super-atleti
sono correlate con modificazioni
strutturali nelle aree di senso del
cervello e in quelle associate con
il movimento. Di conseguenza,
questi sportivi fanno un uso più
efficiente e concentrato di queste
specifiche aree cerebrali. Ciò
spiegherebbe la loro capacità
di compiere movimenti mirati,
di mantenere elevati livelli di
concentrazione e di prendere
decisioni in tempi molto brevi,
anche sotto pressione.
Secondo Yarrow,
quindi, il cervello dei superatleti,
attraverso l'allenamento,
si trasforma in un potentissimo
e preciso computer, in grado
di guidare il corpo a compiere
movimenti sorprendentemente
veloci e precisi per giungere alla
vittoria.

The history of the
United States as a nation is
barely over two hundred years.
The United States in its two hundred
year history has welcomed
people from all over the world.
Many of those who emigrated to
this country brought with them
cultural and religious traditions
which predated the formation of
the United States by hundreds
of years.Among the people
who came to the U.S. were
men and women from a small
town nestled in the peaks of
the Apennine Mountains. They
lived in the town of Monte San
Giacomo (Province of Salerno,
Italy) named after St. James the
Apostle.This little hamlet, of less
than three thousand people, saw
many of its sons and daughters
depart for the great land across
the sea, where they hoped to
make a better life for themselves
and their families.
Despite the great distance
that separated them from
their homeland, the San Giacomese,
most of whom settled
in the Metropolitan area and
principally Hoboken, maintained
sentimental feelings for their
place of origin. In the early days
of their arrival in a new land with
a strange language and customs,
the immigrants encountered
many difficulties and endured
many social, economic, and
political hardships. During this
period, the newly arrived San
Giacomese drew strength from
their communal ties. They were
bound together by the love of
their homeland and Faith. The
desire to maintain their traditional
values and religious customs
inspired them to establish the St.
Ann's Society (Societa' S. Anna),
an organization which would be
a means of bringing the people
even closer together and promote
their ideals.
The members , who were not at
all affluent, originally met in a
basement at Fourth and Jefferson
Streets. With the passage of
time, the Society's membership
increased and the members were
able to purchase a storefront
property at Seventh and Adams
Streets. In the meantime (1900),
St. Ann's Parish (Parrochia di
S. Anna) had just been established.
Priests said mass and held
religious services in a small area
of the storefront which had been
converted into a chapel.
A short time later, the
parish purchased a parcel of land
at the corner of Seventh and

Jefferson Streets, as the site for
a future church and rectory. This
dream was soon to be realized
by the laying of the cornerstone
on November 8, 1903 and
finally with the completion of
the church in 1906. The successful
construction of the church
inspired the Society to develop
plans for a celebration or festa,
that would serve to honor St.
Ann, strengthen their devotion
and preserve a cherished tradition.
A committee was
formed to devise and execute the
plans for the "festa". Meetings
were held months in advance of
the projected feast day. In order
to raise money to finance the
feast, members circulated from
door to door not only in Hoboken
but wherever their fellow
townsmen and relatives were
to be found. They traveled by
train, subway and ferry to the far
reaches of the metropolitan area
and beyond. Their devotion to
St. Ann and the desire to honor
her spurred them on tirelessly to
achieve their goal. The months
of planning and hard work came
to fruition with the inauguration
of St. Ann's Feast, along with the
feast of San Giacomo, in 1910.
A two day festival was held July
25th in honor of San Giacomo
and July 26th in honor of St.
Ann.
Various Italian foods
were featured as well as operatic
music and singers for the public’s
enjoyment. However, the
culmination of these festivities
was the procession of the statue

Immigrants from Monte
San Giacomo and their families
traveled great distances to
Hoboken for this event. Society
members adorned with shawls,
sashes and ribbons with the
image of St. Ann, processed
through the streets as a band
played both religious and traditional
Italian songs. Thousands
of men, women and children followed
the procession through the
cobble stone streets of Hoboken
as a sign of devotion, to fulfill
a vow or simply to preserve the
traditions of their homeland.
Those unable to walk waited
patiently at their homes to view
the statue of the saint. It was not
uncommon for pregnant women,
as a sacrificial symbol, to walk
the entire procession in their
bare feet. St. Ann is the patroness
of pregnant women because
although she was thought to
have been sterile she conceived
the Blessed Virgin very late in
life. To this day, women who are
pregnant and those wishing to
become pregnant turn to her for
help.
Although the founding
fathers of the first St. Ann's Feast
have passed on, their descendants
continue to honor their memory
and preserve their endeared traditions
through the organization
of the modern day festival and
through their dedicated devotion

produrrà la prima 500 made in
Usa. L'indiscrezione, diffusa ieri
dal sito americano Edmund. com,
non trova conferma ufficiale perché,
dicono le fonti del Lingotto,
"la società della nuova Chrysler
è stata costituita a giugno e le decisioni
operative verranno prese
solo dopo la metà di agosto.
Finora, dunque, si tratta solo di
speculazioni". La "speculazione"
di Edmond mette comunque fine
all'ipotesi che l'utilitaria destinata
ad aprire la strada al marchio
Fiat negli Usa venga prodotta
nello stabilimento messicano di
Toluca. Secondo l'indiscrezione
diffusa ieri lo stabilimento
scelto è invece quello Chrysler
di Belvidere, dove fino ad oggi
si producevano fuoristrada con i
marchi Jeep e Dodge. In alternativa
alla 500, che dovrebbe
cominciare la produzione nel
2011, a Belvidere si realizzerebbero
la nuova Alfa "Milano" e
un fuoristrada con il marchio del
Biscione.
Quanto Torino scommetta,
anche a livello di immagine,
sulla 500 lo dimostra il
successo che la piccola utilitaria
sta ottenendo in Francia dove
le vendite hanno conosciuto un
vero e proprio boom nei primi
mesi del 2009. Nel primo semestre
dell'anno le immatricolazioni
sono state 13 mila e dai concessionari
ci sono prenotazioni già
per 2.000 nuovi acquisti. Ma
un nuovo boom è previsto per
l'autunno quando verrà commercializzata
la versione cabrio
che, secondo i dirigenti di Fiat
France, dovrebbe attirare soprattutto
il pubblico femminile.
Sempre secondo i dati forniti ieri
dal Lingotto, il 20 per cento delle
500 vendute in Francia sarebbe
stato acquistato nell'area parigina,
a dimostrazione del fatto
che nella capitale l'utilitaria è
diventata un fenomeno di moda.
I problemi per il Lingotto
vengono invece dall'Italia
e in particolare dalla Sicilia
dove i sindacati hanno indetto
uno sciopero di otto ore nello
stabilimento di Termini Imerese
contro il progetto di riconversione
produttiva a partire dal
2012. Mercoledì prossimo, in
occasione dell'incontro a Roma
tra azienda, governo e sindacati, i
dipendenti siciliani bloccheranno
la produzione mentre la Regione
ha pagato l'aereo per Roma a
una folta delegazione, sindaci
in testa, che intende protestare
con il piano di Marchionne. La
stessa Regione Sicilia avrebbe
riesumato un vecchio piano, mai
realizzato, per risolvere una parte
dei problemi logistici che, secondo
Torino, renderebbero poco
conveniente la realizzazione a
Termini della Lancia Y. Il piano
proponeva di triplicare l'attuale
produzione investendo in infrastrutture
quasi 400 milioni di
denaro pubblico.

Etruscans and people who lived
in the Middle Ages (between
the 10th and 15th centuries) as
well as from people living in the
region today.
While there was a clear
genetic link between Medieval
Tuscans and the current population,
the relationship between
modern Tuscans and their Bronze
Age ancestors could not be
proven, the study showed.
“Some people have hypothesized
that the most ancient DNA sequences,
those from the Etruscan
era, could contain errors or have
been contaminated but tests
conducted with new methods
exclude this,” said David
Caramelli of Florence University
and Guido Barbujani of Ferrara
University.
“The most simple explanation
is that the structure of
the Tuscan population underwent
important demographic changes
in the first millennium before
Christ,” they said. “Immigration
and forced migration have
diluted the Etruscan genetic
inheritance so much as to make it
difficult to recognize”.
The scientific data does not necessarily
mean that the Etruscans
died out, the researchers said.
Teams from Florence and Ferrara
universities are working
to identify whether traces of the
Etruscans genetic inheritance
may still exist in people living in
isolated locations in the region.
The new study is published
online by the scientific journal
Molecular Biology and Evolution.
The Etruscans lived mainly
between the rivers Tiber and
Arno in modern-day Umbria,
Lazio and Tuscany, in the first
millennium BC.
By the sixth century BC
they had become the dominant
force in central Italy, but repeated
attacks from Gaul’s and
Syracuse later forced them into
an alliance with the embryonic
Roman state, which gradually
absorbed Etruscan civilization.
Most of what is known about the
Etruscans derives from archaeology
as the few accounts passed
down by Roman historians tend
to be hostile, portraying them as
gluttonous and lecherous.
This problem is compounded
by the fact that Etruscan
cities were built almost entirely
of wood and so vanished quickly,
leaving little for archaeologists to
investigate.

Berlusocni and Hu Jintao
Rome - Italy and
China on Monday signed seven
key accords aimed at boosting
economic relations and trade
between the two countries. The
agreements focus on promoting
investments and expand relations
and cooperation in the areas of
industry, culture, technology,
tourism, agriculture and science.
The accords were signed
following a meeting between
Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi
and Chinese President Hu Jintao,
who has been invited to take
part later this week in a session
of the Group of Eight summit
which Italy is hosting in its role
as rotating president. China is
part of the G14, which is the G8
plus emerging economies like
India and Brazil. Hu Jintao came
to Italy on Sunday leading a
delegation of over 300 Chinese
businessmen which has been
on a `shopping trip` to Europe.
According to the head of Italy`s
industrial employers association
Confindustria, Emma Marcegaglia,
the value of deals set to be
signed by Italian companies with
members of the Chinese delegation
will surpass 1.5 billion Euros.
“This is a great opportunity
for Italian industry which will
help us pull out of the economic
downturn,” she observed on
the sidelines of an Italy-China
economic forum here. “Today
(at the forum) there will be 500
Italian businessmen and 300
Chinese who will be discuss not
only trade but also joint ventures
in many leading sectors,” she
added. “This is a day of historic
importance because it will allow
us to bolster our ties with China,
the only country in the world
which currently is seeing an
economic recovery,” the Confindustria
chief observed. Fiat
on Monday signed a agreement
with Chinese automaker GAC to
set up a joint venture which will
allow it to once again produce
vehicles in China, two years after
the collapse of its alliance with
Nanjing Automotive. The aim of
the 400-million-euro accord is to
build a plant which will initially
produce 140,000 vehicles and
220,000 motors a year, which
in a second phase will become
250,000 and 300,000 respectively.
Speaking later at a joint press
conference with Berlusconi, Hu
Jintao said that China “wants
a balanced trade with Italy. We
welcome Italian products which
are adapt for the Chinese market
and we do not want an excessive
(trade) surplus” towards Italy.
Berlusconi expressed his hope to
see “collaboration between Italy
and China which is increasingly
vast and profound to the respective
benefit of each country”.
“Despite the crisis, the value our
bilateral economic relations rose
20% in 2008 to 38 billion Euros
and we hope to see it continue to
climb,” he added.

on Monday that he preferred
the format of the Group of 14 to
that of the G20 because it was
more manageable. The premier
made his remarks at a joint press
conference with visiting Chinese
President Hu Jintao, whom he
has invited to take part in an expanded
session of this week’s G8
summit in L’Aquila, which Italy
is hosting as rotating president.
Berlusconi was referring to ongoing
discussions to expand the
G8 format given the global nature
of the world economy. Some
countries, like Germany, want to
see it replaced by the G20.

newspaper’s claim that it risked
expulsion from the Group of
Eight in favor of Spain. Foreign
Minister Franco Frattini on
Tuesday rejected The Guardian’s
claim there was a groundswell
behind the idea because of the
allegedly chaotic organization of
this week’s summit in the Italian
mountain town of L’Aquila.
“That’s nonsense,”
Frattini said, calling the report
“a joke”. “I hope The Guardian
leaves the (ranks of) the world’s
great newspapers,” Frattini told
reporters. The British daily on
Tuesday cited unidentified senior
Western officials as saying there
was growing pressure from other
member states to have Italy expelled
from the group.
The Guardian said
Spain was the prime candidate
to join the G8 because it recently

while the G14 already represents
80% of the world economy.

by his decision to expand the

Because the G14 is a
manageable format it should be

LUMACHE ALLA GIO GIO-
SNAILS GIO GIO STYLE
INGREDIENTI
40 lumache di vigna
500 gr di pomodori freschi
100 gr. di olio extravergine d’oliva
2 spicchi d’aglio
un pizzico di origano
sale
1 peperoncino
INGREDIENTS
40 vineyard’s snails
500 gr. fresh tomatoes
100 gr. extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves of garlic
a pinch of oregano
salt
1 red chilli pepper
PREPARAZIONE
Le lumache saranno purgate alla perfezione.
Lavarle ripetutamente, poi metterle in una pentola,
ricoprirle con acqua fredda e porre il recipiente sul
fuoco basso.
Quando le lumache escono dal guscio, alzare il
fuoco al massimo e lasciare bollire per mezz’ora.
Preparare a parte un sugo semplice di pomodoro
con abbondante origano e peperoncino. Scolare le
lumache, toglierle dal guscio e levare l’estremita’
amarognola. Lavarle bene. Buttarle nel sugo e far
finire di cuocere, finche’ il sugo sara’ bene addensato
e le lumache tenere.
Servire con crostoni di pane fritto.
PREPARATION
Purge the snails. Wash them well then place them in
a pan and cover with cold water over a low flame.
When the snails come out of their shells, higher the
flame and let them boil for half an hour.
Prepare plain tomato sauce with lots of oregano and
red chilli pepper; strain the snails and cut of the bitter
end. Wash them well, add them to the sauce and
finish cooking until the sauce is thick and the snails
are tender. Serve with fried bread crusts.
