NATIVE VIEWS: A TRIP BACK
TO MEDIAEVAL TIMES
Grazzano Visconti is a mediaeval style village situated
in the Comune of Vigolzone, in the province of
Piacenza. It lies about 15 kilometres from Piacenza
and the entire village of around 210,000m2 is owned
by the Viscount of Modrone. There are about 180 inhabitants.
The main feature of the village is that early
last century it was entirely rebuilt around the castle
which dates from the 14th century, but which now
lies in ruins. Indeed, Gian Galeazzo Visconti laid the
foundation stone of the Cathedral of Milan in 1386
and authorized the construction work of another, less
famous but nonetheless very interesting building,
Grazzano Castle, for the wedding of his sister Beatrice
and John Anguissola.
Restoration has now transformed an area formerly
made up of old farms and uncultivated land into a
faithful reproduction of a mediaeval village, down to
the smallest detail. On the walls of the houses there
are paintings, carvings, coats of arms and the village
also features traditional arts and crafts workers producing
highly artistic wrought iron work and furniture
made in the mediaeval style.
In 1986 the mediaeval village of Grazzano Visconti
was granted the right to call itself a "città d'arte" or
arts and crafts city of Piacenza. This was because it
retained such centuries-old skills as woodworking,
ironworking and ceramics.
The village is small and primarily consists of assorted
shops selling swords, shields, helmets, resin statues,
perfume, minerals, etc.
For some years now it has been possible to visit the
courtyard of the castle accompanied by a guide for a
fee, but the rest of the village can be visited free of
charge.
There are four entrance gates to the village. Visitors
park their cars just outside the walls and from there
find themselves immersed in a realistic mediaeval village,
rebuilt to perfection during the last century and
still beautifully maintained. Nothing is missing: from
the All'Armeria Chapel and the grand mansion house
to the homes of the ordinary people, everything is in
perfect mediaeval style.
INTELLECT
It is difficult to
avoid buying completely
unusual
objects: there are
replicas of mediaeval
weapons of
many kinds,
household items
in traditionally
fashioned wrought
iron, candlesticks,
chandeliers, bows
and arrows to suit
all budgets, ceramic
plates and
more. For fans of such things, there is also a small card and
stationery shop with a wide selection of parchment, beautiful
traditionally bound books and magical texts…
The town also holds themed exhibitions and historical military
re-enactments. In the re-enactment I saw, a soldier
who lost a duel was put in the stocks and the audience was
called upon to decide the fate of the poor unfortunate with
a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down gesture.
To conclude, a visit to Grazzano Visconti is definitely to be
recommended, a great place for a day out in one of the
most beautiful areas of Piacenza and set in vineyards that
produce a particular grape. The wine area is known as the
Colli Piacentini and it forms a relatively homogeneous
wine-making area which has resulted in DOC (Denomination
of Controlled Origin) wines.
These are known as the DOC of the Colli Piacentini.
A visit to the village is hugely enjoyable, as is the opportunity
to purchase truly special handcrafted objects.
There are plenty of choices for a good bite to eat and drink
in the area and opportunities to try the famous local neck
of pork and bacon (coppa and pancetta) with fried gnocchi
and a good glass of Gutturnio or Bonarda.
I Colli Piacentini formano una zona vitivinicola relativamente
omogenea che ha creato una serie di vini a Denominazione
di Origine Controllata, conosciuta come la DOC dei Colli
Piacentini.
Molto piacevole la visita del borgo, molto interessante la possibilità
di fare acquisti d'articoli d'artigianato veramente pregevoli
e numerose le possibilità per una sosta enogastronomica
nei dintorni, per degustare la famosa coppa e pancetta piacentina,
da abbinarsi con gnocco fritto e un buon bicchiere
di Gutturnio o Bonarda.
UN VIAGGIO
NEL MEDIOEVO
Grazzano Visconti è un borgo in stile medievale, situato
nel territorio del Comune di Vigolzone, in provincia di
Piacenza, da cui dista circa 15 chilometri. L'intera superficie
del borgo (circa 210.000 mq) è di proprietà
dei Visconte di Modrone e ospita circa 180 abitanti. La
caratteristica principale del borgo è quella di essere
stato interamente ricostruito all'inizio del secolo scorso
attorno al castello del 1300, ormai in rovina.
Nel 1386, infatti, Gian Galeazzo Visconti pose la
prima pietra del Duomo di Milano e autorizzò la costruzione
di un'altra opera, meno celebre ma di
grande interesse: il Castello di Grazzano in occasione
del matrimonio della sorella Beatrice con Giovanni
Anguissola. Il restauro ha trasformato un'area dominata
da vecchie aziende agricole e da terreni incolti
in una riproduzione fedele di un villaggio medievale,
curato nei minimi particolari: sui muri delle case ci
sono affreschi, intarsi, stemmi nobiliari e caratterizzato
dalla presenza di arti e mestieri antichi e a forte
vocazione artistica: il lavoro del ferro battuto e la produzione
di mobili in stile medievale. Il borgo medievale
di Grazzano Visconti è una «città d'arte» del
piacentino: dal 1986, si fregia di tale titolo proprio perché
al suo interno si continuano, dopo secoli, la lavorazione
del legno, del ferro e della ceramica.
Il paese è piccolo ed è caratterizzato principalmente
da botteghe di ogni sorta: spade, scudi, elmi, statue
in resina, profumi, minerali ecc...
Da qualche anno si può visitare a pagamento il cortile
del castello accompagnati da una guida esperta, il
resto del borgo invece è visitabile gratuitamente.
Le porte di ingresso al borgo sono quattro: parcheggiate
l'auto appena fuori le mura e tuffatevi in un perfetto
paese medievale, ricostruito alla perfezione nello
scorso secolo e ancora oggi splendidamente tenuto.
Non manca veramente nulla: dalla Cappella all'Armeria,
dal Palazzo signorile alla dimore per il popolo...
tutto in perfetto stile medievale.
È difficile sottrarsi poi dal fare qui acquisti assolutamente
insoliti: si trovano riproduzioni di armi medievali
di qualunque genere, articoli per la casa in ferro battuto
artigianali, candelabri, lampadari di antica fattura,
archi e frecce per tutte le tasche, piatti e ceramiche,
boccali e quant'altro. Per gli appassionati c'è anche
una piccola cartoleria con carta pergamena di tutti i
tipi, libri rilegati come antiche e magiche scritture...
Il borgo ospita anche mostre a tema, e rievocazioni
storiche in costume come ad esempio combattimenti
tra soldati. Nella rappresentazione a cui ho assistito
il soldato battuto in duello veniva messo alla gogna e
il pubblico presente era chiamato a decidere le sorti
del malcapitato con un semplice gesto del dito puntato
verso l’alto o verso il basso.
In conclusione, una visita a Grazzano Visconti è
senza dubbio da consigliare, una meta ideale per una
giornata all'aperto in una delle più belle zone del piacentino
fra colline di vigneti che producono una discreta
uva.
