law also the canon law chair at “ The Free Civil University”of Bogotà. At the age of 41, on 5 th June 1971, he was
elected Bishop, titular of “Villa del Re” and designated Assistant c.i.s of the Bishop of Pereira, whom he succeeded
on 1 st July 1976.General Secretary of the Latin American Episcopal Council (C.E.L.A.M.) from 1983 to 1987.
President of the same Council from 1987 to 1991. On 16 th December 1992 he was promoted Archbishop
Metropolita of Bucaramanga. On 15 th June 1996 the Holy Father has called him to the guide of the Congregation
for the Clergy, naming him “Pro-prefect”. On 18 th January 1998 the Holy Father, announcing the Concistoro on
February 21 st , he has included Mons. Castrillòn in the College Cardinalizio. In the same time he has been nominated
Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. In date April 13 th 2000 Giovanni Paolo II has named the
Cardinal Castrillòn Hoyos, President of the “Papal Committee Ecclesia Dei”. His Eminence currently belongs to
the Congregations for the divine Cult and the Discipline of the Sacraments, for the Bishops, for the Evangelization
of People, for the Catholic education of the Papal Council for the Legislative Texts, of the Social Communications,
of the Papal Committee for Latin America and of the administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic Centre.
He has covered the position of Member of the Papal Council for the Dialogue with the not believers and the Papal
Council lustitia et Pax He has participated besides, as delegated of the Colombian Episcopal Conference, at the
General Conference of the Latin American bishopric of Puebla and Saint Domingo. During the Synod for America
he has covered the position of Delegated President and it belongs to the Council post-synodal. He was special
Legate of the Pope for the celebration of 1200 year from Carlo Magno’s crowing in Acquisgrano and he was envoy
of the Holy Father to sign the peace treaty between Equator and Perù.

Le attività di Dino Gavina sono un punto di riferimento necessario per chiunque si occupi del divenire della cultura
figurativa e del suo rapporto con momenti della produzione. Ma Dino Gavina è anche un “materiale” necessario
per ogni storico che voglia occuparsi di questi temi per gli ultimi decenni: ed è materiale non indagato in
maniera adeguata. Le sue vicende, culturali e imprenditoriali, sono un “materiale storico” di eccezionale importanza:(......).
Si tratta infatti di attività nel campo della “cultura materiale”, basate su una forte volontà creativo/propositiva,
sempre impegnata a modificare (migliorare) la realtà che ci circonda, anche nel lasciare semplicemente
“segni” su un percorso che è diventato insegnamento metodologico per rigore e coerenza. Dino Gavina è un “lavoratore
estetico”, che si occupa prevalentemente della vita quotidiana: è perciò un protagonista anzitutto della scena
del “paesaggio domestico”. Il suo “lavoro” non è solamente quello dell’“industriale”, come non è solamente quello
del “designer” o quello dell’”organizzatore culturale”: può forse essere definito come quello del “catalizzatore”
di tutte queste dimensioni, sempre con una finalità positiva (che è contemporaneamente provocatoria). E’ lui che
ha cercato e cerca i rapporti con gli artisti più significativo/stimolanti per “impegnarli” in nuove attività; è lui che
costruisce su questo rapporto (che ritiene fondamentale) le dimensioni imprenditoriali e aziendali necessarie alla
produzione e alla commercializzazione dei risultati di ogni iniziativa; è lui che verifica, controlla e che conseguentemente
assume in prima persona la paternità/responsabilità di ogni iniziativa e di ogni prodotto. Non è perciò un
manager, né un “tradizionale” capitano d’industria: qualunque sia il vantaggio economico di una operazione, questa
non inizierà mai se estranea a precisi valori etico/estetico/morali. Si tratta sempre di operazioni che richiedono
rapporti con “prodotti genuini”: tutte le volte che Dino Gavina si è scontrato con “false” professionalità (imprenditoriali,
manageriali, progettuali) le ha rifiutate, anche se questo imponeva costi umani elevati. Così, chi conosce
Dino Gavina e rimane di lui amico, può pensare, oggettivamente, di avere “superato una prova”.
