LA FORESTA
Dirigendosi tra le pittoresche colline a nord di Rieti,
in una splendida vallata solcata dal torrente
dell’Acqua Marina, tutto circondato da boschi di
castagno e rovere, si trova il Santuario di Santa Maria
de La Foresta dove una tradizione tarda vuole che,
nella pace di questo paesaggio, il santo abbia
composto il Cantico delle Creature o almeno una
parte di esso.
La chiesa del Convento, di fronte al cui portico c’è
un’edicola che ricorda il miracolo dell’uva (si narra
che il santo compì il miracolo ridonando abbondanti
grappoli a una vigna che il popolo, accorrendo per
vederlo, aveva completamente spogliato), conserva
sulle pareti affreschi del primo Trecento e sulle
vetrate figura il Tau tanto caro a Francesco.
Out beyond the picturesque hills north of Rieti, where
the Acqua Marina torrent flows through a splendid valley,
lies the Sanctuary of St. Mary of the Forest, immersed
in thick woodlands of chestnut and oak.
Tradition has it that here in this peaceful landscape,
St. Francis composed his Canticle of the Creatures,
or at least part of it.
In front of the portico of the Church of the Convent stands
an aedicula, which recalls the miracle of the grapes
(it is said that the Saint carried out a miracle and made
bunches of grapes grow again on a vine that had been
completely stripped of fruit by the people coming to visit
him). The walls of the Church itself are adorned with
frescoes from the beginning of the fourteenth century and
the windows are decorated with St. Francis’ beloved Tau.
