QuiSestriere a voiVancouver! 

A quattro anni dalla fantastica avventura 

olimpica, sul territorio è rimasto lo spirito 

di aggregazione, fondamentale per 

raggiungere altri importanti traguardi! 

Il tempo vola! Sono passati già quattro anni dalle Olimpiadi e 

Paralimpiadi, le più belle di sempre, ospitate sul nostro territorio. 

Vancouver sembrava così lontana, ancor di più dei chilometri che ci 

separano. Ed invece è già ora di passare il testimone, di scrivere un’altra 

pagina di storia. Ed a proposito di storia ecco la mia. Qui dentro, 

attraverso le pagine di Sestriere Life, trovate tutta la passione per questo 

territorio che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere a fondo poco prima delle 

olimpiadi. Luoghi e personaggi fantastici che spero di riuscire a 

raccontare trasmettendovi le stesse emozioni che provo quando realizzo 

i miei reportage. Una passione che mi ha spinto in questa nuova 

avventura che affronto nella duplice veste di direttore responsabile ed 

editore, nella speranza di incontrare tanti amici durante questo 

fantastico viaggio immerso nella neve delle montagne olimpiche.

Four years on from the fantastic Olympic adventure, there still 

remains a spirit of unison, on our territory, fundamental in 

achieving important goals. 

Time lies! Already four years have passed since the best ever Olympics and 

Paralympics, were hosted on our territory. Vancouver seemed so far away, 

it was more than kilometres that separated us from Canada. 

And yet it is already time to pass testimony, to write another page of 

history. And talking of history, here is mine. Inside, turn the pages of 

Sestriere Life, and ind all the passion of this territory which I was 

fortunate enough to encounter in depth just a little before the 

commencement of the Olympics. Fantastic places and people who I hope to 

succeed in telling you about whilst transmitting the very same emotions 

that I feel when I write my report. A passion which has pushed me in this 

new adventure which I am facing in the dual capacity of director and 

editor in the hope of meeting many friends during this fantastic journey 

immersed in the snows of the Olympics.

Nuovo manto erboso sintetico per il campo da calcio di Sestriere. In 

attesa di un’inaugurazione ufficiale, prevista per la prossima 

primavera, il primo a camminarci sopra è stato il ct della Nazionale 

Italiana di Calcio, Marcello Lippi. E se portasse la nazionale in ritiro a 

Sestriere prima dei Mondiali in Sudafrica? Staremo a vedere!

Svizzeri imbattibili, 

giovani sestrieresi sugli scudi 

Dominio elvetico con Melanie Bürgener e Renè Stöessel nella prima 

gara della stagione di Slalom Carving, disputatasi sabato 12 

dicembre sulle nevi di Sestriere. Sestrieresi in grande spolvero nella 

prova valida per la Coppa Italia. Nella categoria Children successi di 

Carlotta Poncet e Lorenzo Teglia.

Dal 16 al 21 marzo il Mondiale 

di Sci dei Corpi di Polizia 

Quattordicesima edizione per Fis Police Ski - Campionati Mondiali di 

Sci dei Corpi di Polizia, che avranno luogo a Sestriere dal 16 al 21 

Marzo 2010. Una manifestazione a carattere internazionale aperta 

alla partecipazione sia dei migliori atleti dei Gruppi Sportivi Militari 

dei Corpi di Polizia, che degli atleti appartenenti ai Corpi di Polizia 

facenti parte di Sci Club Civili. 

From 16th to 21st March , the Police Force World Ski 

championship. The 14th edition of FIS POLICE SKI - World ski 

championship for the Police Forces, will take place in Sestriere from 

16th to 21st March 2010. An event of International standing, it will 

be open for participation to both the best athletes of the Police 

Force’s Military Sports Teams as well as to those athletes belonging 

to the Police Force’s Civil Ski Club.

SESTRIERE - Grandi eventi e grandi campioni 

per essere tali hanno bisogno di piste all’altezza 

capaci di evidenziarne doti tecniche ed 

atletiche. Per lo sci il palcoscenico dove mettere 

in mostra talento e coraggio sono le 

montagne, i pendii innevati, i tracciati più selettivi. 

Diversi nel mondo, alcuni in Italia. Luoghi 

dove si respira la storia dello sci e la sua 

evoluzione. Templi sacri di questa disciplina 

con piste uniche, inimitabili. Ebbene, senza 

presunzione, Sestriere è sicuramente uno di 

questi luoghi. Una fetta di storia dello sci alpino. 

I più grandi campioni dello sci di tutti i 

tempi nel loro lungo palmares conservano ricordi 

di splendide vittorie ottenute sulle piste 

di Sestriere. Nessuna località al mondo ha or-

ganizzato, dagli anni ’30 ad oggi, un così alto 

numero di gare internazionali: dalle tappe di 

Coppa del Mondo di Sci Alpino ai Campionati 

Mondiali di Sci del 1997 sino alle gare dei 

XX° Giochi Olimpici e Paralimpici Invernali di 

Torino 2006. In relazione a tutto ciò, la decisione 

della Fis di non confermare Sestriere 

nel calendario 2010 di Coppa del Mondo fa 

discutere. Senza entrare nel merito dei fattori 

che hanno scaturito questa scelta possiamo 

affermare con certezza che è sicuramente 

una decisione impopolare per gran parte del 

“circo bianco”. Specie perché arrivata dopo 

una grandissima olimpiade dal punto di vista 

organizzativo, tecnico e sportivo. Le istituzioni 

locali e politico-sportive si adopereranno affinché 

nelle prossime stagioni Sestriere possa 

tornare ad ospitare una tappa di Coppa del 

Mondo. 

Per fortuna gli eventi sulle fantastiche piste 

che hanno reso famoso il Sestriere in tutto il 

mondo, non mancano. Non si piange, semplicemente 

dispiace. Ecco forse pensiamo che 

non venire a misurarsi a Sestriere dispiaccia 

anche a tanti atleti della Coppa del Mondo. 

D’altronde Sestriere è stata un po’ come 

Monza per la Formula 1, un appuntamento 

storico in calendario atteso da migliaia di appassionati.

Sestriere - GREAT SKIERS COME HERE 

Sestriere is a stage for great ski events. 

From its origins to this day. From the 

Coppa de Re to the various stages of 

the Fis Ski World Cup, from Alpine 

World Ski Championship of 1997 

to the Turin Olympics and Paralympics 

Winter Games of 2006. 

SESTRIERE – Great events and great champions, 

in order to be thus, must have pistes of 

high quality where they can prove their technical 

and athletic expertise. With skiing, the 

stage where one displays talent and courage 

is the mountains, the snowy slopes, the most 

selective runs. There are many in the world, 

some in Italy. Places where one can breathe 

the history of skiing and its evolution. Sacred 

temples for the practice with unique and 

inimitable pistes. And so, without being presumptuous, 

Sestriere is surely one of these 

places. A piece of history of alpine skiing. The 

greatest ski champions of all times retain 

splendid memories of victories obtained on 

the slopes of Sestriere. 

No other venue in the world has organised 

from the 1930s to the present day, such a 

high number of competitions: from the 

Alpine Skiing World Cup and the World Skiing 

Championship of 1997 to the 20th Turin 

Winter Olympic Games of 2006. Because of 

all of which, the decision by FIS to not put 

Sestriere on the calendar for the 2010 World 

Cup is under dispute. Without going into the 

merits of the factors which have brought this 

decision about, we can confirm that it is certainly 

an unpopular one for a great part of 

the ‘White Circle’. For some, because it has 

happened after a great Olympiade (Winter 

Olympics) from an organisational, technical 

and sportive point of view. 

The local politico/sportive bodies, will do their 

best to ensure that in future seasons Sestriere 

may again host World Cup events. Fortunately, 

events on the fantastic slopes that 

have made Sestriere so famous worldwide 

are in no shortage. There are no tears, just 

disappointment. This is why perhaps we believe 

that to be unable to come here to compete 

is disappointing many World Cup 

athletes. 

Besides, Sestriere has become a little like 

Monza and its Formula One – an historical 

appointment on the calendar awaited for by 

thousands of followers (e.r)

particolarmente adatti per praticare sci di fondo, 

alpinismo o per semplici passeggiate sulla neve. 

MONTAGNE OLIMPICHE – Lo sci alpino è 

sicuramente la disciplina più praticata sulle 

nostre montagne, con impianti e piste all’avanguardia. 

Altrettanto interessante è l’offerta per gli 

amanti dello sci di fondo, sci alpinismo, senza

tipologie per praticare od avvicinarsi a 

queste discipline. A Sestriere in zona Monte 

Rotta esiste un attrezzato centro per lo sci di 

fondo dove imparare la tecnica di base ed allenarsi 

al campo scuola. Il tutto prima di avventurarsi 

in fantastici percorsi immersi nella 

natura, per una Sestriere tutta da scoprire. 

Le piste di Claviere-Monginevro consentono 

escursioni e passeggiate sulla linea di confine 

tra Italia e Francia. 

Panorami esclusivi si possono ammirare sui 

Monti della Luna e sul percorso che da Bousson 

porta alla piana di Rhuilles salendo poi 

verso il Lago Nero sino ai piedi della Capanna 

Mautino. Un itinerario particolarmente 

adatto per uno sci di fondo escursionismo 

più impegnativo, rivolto ad un’utenza senza 

dubbio più esperta, pronta ad affrontare diversi 

chilometri con un dislivello assai marcato. 

Gli sportivi amanti dell’agonismo 

possono dare libero sfogo alla propria passione 

a Pragelato presso il Centro Sci di Fondo 

che ha assegnato le medaglie ai giochi olimpici 

invernali di Torino 2006. Insomma non 

c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta!

the Monti della Luna and on the course that

at the foot of the Capanna Mautino. An itinerary 

particularly adapted for tougher cross 

country skiing and undoubtedly better suited 

for those at a more expert level, who are 

ready to tackle the many kilometres of very 

marked and varied gradients. 

Those sporty lovers of competitive spirit can 

give vent to their passion at Pragelato at the 

cross country ski centre who awarded the 

medals of the Turin Winter Olympics of 2006.

SESTRIERE - La Freewhite.. lo Sport per Tutti 

(Ski Team Associazione Sportiva e Sport Disabled 

ONLUS), oltre alle opportunità invernali 

di Sport per Persone con Disabilità relative allo 

Sci Alpino, nell’estate 2009 ha visto grande 

successo di partecipazione alle discipline sportive 

proposte. 

Tra le attività proposte la pratica del Tennis, 

Golf, Quad, Mountain Bike, Handbike, Downhill 

Bike, Tiro con l’Arco, Piscina ed Escursionismo; 

grazie al contributo della Fiat 

Autonomy sono state realizzate alcune settimane 

Multisport che hanno riscosso grande 

successo di partecipazione. 

La Freewhite ha reso accessibile alle persone 

disabili molteplici attività sportive con grande 

impegno economico e di risorse umane; grazie 

al Progetto realizzato con la Compagnia 

di Sanpaolo è stato possibile reperire molte 

attrezzature sportive utili per lo sviluppo delle 

iniziative nel corso della prossima stagione 

estive del 2010. 

Nello spirito della Freewhite molte attività 

sono proposte a titolo gratuito e la splendida 

collaborazione con la società gestrice 

dell’Hotel Lago Losetta Melvin Jones permette 

accoglienza accessibile e fruibile a tutte 

le disabilità.

Martin, medaglia d’argento alle Olimpiadi Invernali

ONLUS), as well as the winter opportunities 

of Sport for Disabled Persons relative to Alpine

Skiing, the association saw great participation 

in the programmes offered in summer 2009. 

Among the activities proposed are tennis, 

golf, quad, mountain biking, handbiking, 

downhill biking, archery, swimming, and excursions; 

thanks to the contribution of Fiat 

Autonomy, it has been possible to put several 

weeks of multisports into practice which have 

had great success with their following. 

Freewhite have made multiple sporting activities 

accessible to the disabled, with great financial 

input and human resource. Thanks to 

a project created with the Company Sanpaolo 

it has been possible to procure sports equipment 

which will be useful in developing the 

initiative during the summer season 2010. 

Due to the spirit of Freewhite, many of the activities 

are free of charge and with the splendid 

collaboration of the Management 

Company of the Hotel Lago Losetta Melvin 

Jones, an easy and accessible welcome is afforded 

to all disabled. 

The inexhaustible driving force of Freewhite is

SESTRIERE - Vialattea propone una serie di 

novità tecniche nella zona del Vallone Rio 

Nero tra Sestriere e Sauze d’Oulx. L’area è 

stata completamente ridisegnata con il duplice 

obiettivo di migliorarne la sciabilità e di 

potenziare e rendere più diretti e veloci i collegamenti 

tra le varie aree, individuando nel 

Fraiteve il punto di incontro più importante 

del sistema sciistico della Vialattea. I nuovi impianti 

e le nuove piste, oltre ad accorciare i 

tempi di collegamento, garantiranno i trasferimenti 

degli sciatori sia in caso di abbondanti 

nevicate, grazie all’ottimizzazione dei sistemi 

di sicurezza dell’area con nuovi paravalanghe 

e “valli-deviatori”, sia in caso di scarso innevamento 

nel Vallone; le due nuove seggiovie, 

infatti, saranno abilitate al trasporto di sciatori 

e pedoni in salita ed in discesa. 

La Nuova seggiovia Colò - Dal fondo del 

Vallone del Rio Nero si potrà raggiungere direttamente 

la cima del Monte Fraiteve con un 

solo impianto (in 9 minuti), la nuova seggiovia 

Colò, una biposto che prende il nome dal 

mitico Canalino che fu teatro delle molteplici 

vittorie di Zeno Colò su queste nevi. 

Riposizionamento seggiovia Basset - La 

seggiovia quadriposto Basset è stata ricollocata 

e si sviluppa lungo una nuova linea: la 

stazione di partenza rimane in fondo al Vallone, 

mentre quella di arrivo è stata spostata 

da Monte Basset a Monte Rocce Nere. Questo 

impianto, rinominato seggiovia Chamonier, 

va a sostituire le due sciovie parallele 

Chamonier e Rio Nero Sauze. Il progetto ha 

comportato un investimento di circa 5 milioni 

di euro rappresentando il più importante investimento 

impiantistico privato sulle vette 

dell’Alta Valle Susa degli ultimi anni.

SESTRIERE - Vialattea is proposing a programme 

of new technology in the Vallone 

Rio Nero area between Sestriere and Sauze 

d’Oulx. The area has been completely restructured 

with the double objective of improving 

ski conditions, maximising and 

rendering more direct and swift the liaison 

between the various areas targeting in the 

Fraiteve area, the busiest point of the Vialattea 

ski zone. The new lifts and the new pistes 

apart from shortening the transfer time will 

guarantee the carrying of skiers both in the 

event of heavy snowfall, thanks to the deployment 

of security systems from the area 

and new avalanche detectors, ‘paravalanghe’ 

and ‘valledeviatori’ (diversions) as well as in 

event of scarce snowfall in the Vallone. The 

two new chairlifts in fact will be equipped to 

transport skiers and pedestrians alike both up 

and down. The Colò chairlift – from the bottom 

of the Rio Nero Vallone will be able to 

reach the top of the Monte Fraiteve direct, 

taking 9 minutes – the new Colò chairlift, a 

two man chair which takes its name from the 

mythical run which formed the stage for the 

multiple victories of Zeno Colo on these 

snows. Repositioning of the Basset chair – the 

four man Basset chair has been relocated and 

follows a new course. The departure point is 

still at the bottom at the Vallone whilst the 

arrival point has been moved from the Monte 

Basset to Monte Rocce Nere. This lift, renamed 

the Chamonier chairlift is going to replace 

the two parallel draglifts Chamonier 

and Rio Nero Sauze. The project has involved 

an investment of about 5 million euros representing 

the most important private investment 

in the skilift industry on the summits of 

the High Susa Valley in recent years.

MONTE ROGNOSA - Un salto indietro nel 

tempo per Sestriere lungo trent’anni. Ottantacinque 

impavidi sciatori di diverse categorie 

e di tutte le età, domenica 5 luglio, si sono 

cimentati nel 1° Trofeo Comune di Sestriere, 

gara di Slalom Gigante, organizzato dallo Sci 

Club Sestriere e dalla Scuola Nazionale Sci Sestriere. 

Era infatti dal lontano 1979 che a Sestriere 

non si disputava una gara di sci in 

estate sulle pendici del Monte Rognosa. Un 

passaggio generazionale con i giovani ragazzini 

di allora che hanno ceduto il testimone ai 

propri figli, tornati a sciare sulla Rognosa. 

“È stata una bellissima favola – ha dichiarato 

Gianni Poncet, ViceSindaco di Sestriere - che 

si è concretizzata dopo trent’anni. Buona 

l’adesione di diversi atleti in rappresentanza 

di diversi sci club delle Montagne Olimpiche. 

Un’esperienza che ci ha fatto capire, nonostante 

siamo partiti all’ultimo nell’organizzazione, 

che in futuro si potrà lavorare per una 

classica gara nei primi mesi di giugno sotto 

l’egida della FISI portando anche atleti di altri

sci club. Sarà un’occasione anche per fare 

nello stesso periodo alcuni allenamenti per i 

nostri ragazzi degli sci club perché questa palestra 

si è dimostrata bellissima, evitando o limitando 

in parte le trasferte estive nei 

ghiacciai francesi e facendo risparmiare soldi 

importanti alle famiglie”. 

Tra gli apripista sul nevaio ai piedi del Monte 

Rognosa anche Uberto Presazzi, ex atleta, che 

ha partecipato alla discesa con abiti ed attrezzatura 

d’epoca dei pionieri dello sci alpino.

MONTE ROGNOSA - A thirty year step back in 

time for Sestriere. On Sunday 5th July, eighty 

five courageous skiers of various levels and all 

ages, assembled for the first Commune of 

Sestriere Trophy, a Giant Slalom race, organised 

by the Ski Club of Sestriere and the National Ski 

School of Sestriere. Back in 1979 nobody in 

Sestriere discussed a summer ski race on the 

slopes of Monte Rognosa. Through the passage 

of a generation the youngsters of that 

time have brought their testimony to their own 

children, and returned to ski on the Monte 

Rognosa themselves. “It is a wonderful story” – 

declared Gianni Poncet, Vice Mayor of Sestriere, 

-“which has taken 30 years to materialise” 

– And there has been great participation 

of diverse athletes representing different Ski 

Clubs of the Olympic Mountain. It is an experience 

which has allowed us to understand, just 

in time, that in future we can work towards a 

classic race in early June under the aegis of the 

FISI, bringing in also athletes from other ski 

clubs. At the same time, it will also be an opportunity 

to train children in our own ski clubs 

which is an excellent exercise and would enable 

us to avoid to a certain extent, having to 

transfer to the glaciers in France and therefore 

saving our parents money. Amongst those who 

have opened the snowfields at the foot of the 

Monte Rognosa, is also, Umberto Presazzi, ex 

athlete who participated in the descent carrying 

equipment, and clad in the traditional 

clothes of the epoch of the pioneers of alpine 

skiing. For the records of success in their various

SESTRIERE - Lo sci d’erba ha vissuto un periodo 

importante sulle montagne ed in collina 

negli anni ’80. Poi la pratica di questa 

disciplina, che consente di sciare anche 

d’estate sui verdi pendii, in Italia è andata via 

via scomparendo. 

Sono rimasti in pochi a praticare questo sport. 

Come avvenuto per lo sci alpino, con attrezzi 

sempre più sciancrati che facilitano la conduzione, 

l’evoluzione dei nuovi modelli di sci 

d’erba rende l’approccio e la pratica di questa 

disciplina ancor più facile e simile alla tecnica 

dello sci invernale. Oggi gli sci d’erba sono più 

veloci e stabili rispetto al passato. 

Dalle ruote si è passati a veri e propri cingolati. 

Sfruttano un meccanismo a rulli che scorrono 

sopra un cingolo, protetto da una 

pellicola trasparente, lubrificato utilizzando 

una miscela di olio di oliva e sapone neutro 

che diminuisce notevolmente l’attrito interno 

a tutto vantaggio dello scorrimento. 

Per rilanciare lo sci d’erba sulle montagne 

olimpiche, la scorsa estate è stata avviata 

un’iniziativa promossa dal Rotary Club Susa 

e Valsusa in collaborazione con la Comunità 

Montana, il Comune di Sestriere, la Scuola 

Nazionale di Sci Sestriere e la Sestrieres Spa. 

In luglio ed agosto sono stati oltre 300 i ragazzi 

iscritti a sci club locali, ai quali si sono 

aggiunti diversi turisti, che si sono cimentati in 

questa disciplina. 

Il weekend prima di ferragosto, Yuri Domini, 

ex campione del mondo, Commissario Tecnico 

della Nazionale Sci d’Erba, accompagnato 

dagli atleti e dimostratori Andrea 

Notaris e Lorenzo Grutti, hanno dispensato 

consigli preziosi seguendo con particolare attenzione 

il nutrito gruppo di ragazzi di sci 

club del territorio che hanno avuto modo di 

provare a sciare sul verde manto erboso. 

Si è sciato dal Colle di Sestriere sino a Borgata 

utilizzando la seggiovia Trebials come impianto 

di risalita. 

Nel primo tratto di percorso, verso Borgata, 

sono state piazzate porte da slalom e da gigante. 

Ed il divertimento non è mancato. I ragazzi 

se la sono cavata più che egregiamente, 

anche tra le porte, merito del grande entusiasmo 

e della carica trasmessa dallo staff azzurro 

che ha svolto un lavoro veramente 

lodevole sia dal punto di vista della professionalità

SESTRIERE - Grass skiing went through an important 

period on the mountains and in the 

hills in the 1980s. 

Then the practice of this sport which permits 

skiing on green slopes in summer, in Italy, disappeared. 

Few continued to do it. 

As was the case with alpine skis, equipment 

became ever more tailored in order to facilitate 

control. 

The evolution of new models of grass ski 

made the approach of this sport much easier 

and similar to the alpine ski technique. Today 

the grass skis are quicker and more stable in 

comparison with those of the past. From 

wheels we have passed to proper ‘caterpillar 

tyres’ (tracks). 

A roller mechanism is used running over the 

caterpillar track, which is protected by a lubricated 

transparent membrane, using a mixture 

of olive oil and soap which reduces the 

internal friction, facilitating the running. 

To relaunch grass skiing on the Olympic 

mountain, last summer a successful initiative 

was put into place by the Rotary Club of Susa 

and Val Susa in cooperation with the Comunità 

Montana, the Comune of Sestriere, the 

National Ski Club of Sestriere, and the Sestriere 

Spa. 

In July and August there were more than 

three hundred students from the local ski 

club joined by many tourists, all of whom 

united in this sport. 

The weekend before ferragosto Yuri Domini, 

ex world champion, Technical Commissioner 

for National Grass Skiing accompanied by 

athletes and demonstrators Andrea Notaris, 

and Lorenzo Grutti, offered valuable tuition, 

following meticulously the large group of 

children of the ski club of the region who 

were able to attempt skiing on a blanket of 

grass. 

They skied from the Colle di Sestriere to Borgata 

using the Trebials chairlift to ascend. On 

the first part of the course, towards Borgata,

erected. There was no shortage of fun. 

The children accomplished it admirably even 

between the gates, meriting the great enthusiasm 

and support afforded by the ‘azzurro’ 

staff who did a truly praiseworthy job

The panoramic glass roof permits the vehicle

The XJ will be available in normal pitch or long 

pitch. For both versions the boot will be of 520 

litres. The new XJ has been built using Jaguar 

technology of aluminium bodywork derived from the aerospace industry,

It has air suspension, and the Adaptive Dynamics (variable,continual

Come ci si muoveva sulla neve ottomila anni fa 

priamente sci. Tra la fine del Settecento e l’inizio 

dell’Ottocento, da mezzo di locomozione, 

gli ski divennero attrezzi per le competizioni e 

il divertimento. In Italia questo sport fu introdotto 

da Adolfo e Paolo Kind, padre e figlio ingenieri 

con fabbrica di stoppini per candele a 

Torino. Era il 1896 . I Kind si fecero arrivare 

dalla Svizzera due paia di Ski e li provarono al 

parco del Valentino. Poi coinvolgendo altri temerari. 

E via sulle colline e valli alpine circostanti 

alla capitale del Regno d’Italia. 

L’evoluzione dello sci è rivive in una mostra 

“Legno Metallo e Plastica” a Sestriere dal 22 al 

27 marzo 2010 presso l’Ufficio Turistico di Sestriere, 

organizzata da Amedeo Macagno e 

Carlo Schenone. “Tra gli sci della mia collezione 

– spiega Macagno - ci sono quelli usati 

nel 1932 da Piero Ghiglione, noto pioniere 

dello sci italiano per un’escursione al Gruppo 

Oetzthal, nell’ Arlberg austriaco. In puro legno 

di betulla finlandese hanno lamine ad attacchi 

in puro alluminio. Attrezzi leggerissimi, non superiori 

a 3,5 kg: il “top” per lo scialpinista anni 

30. Ma nei primi anni del 1900, ai piedi degli 

ardimentosi sciatori non c’erano modelli come 

questo. Venivano usati attrezzi molto meno 

“sofisticati” e leggeri. I prezzi erano comunque 

proibitivi. Pensate che nel periodo antecedente 

alla Prima guerra mondiale un paio di 

sci in frassino ( il legno meno caro) costava 

circa 20 lire. Quelli di Hichory ( legno più pregiato) 

anche 80 lire. Significava poco meno di 

un’automobile. 

Negli anni Trenta tutto cambia. Arrivano i Balilla 

sciatori e il fascismo contribuisce al primo 

grande boom di questo sport che, come lo 

stessa dittatura, diventa un passatempo popolare. 

Non più riservato ad una elite di benestanti. 

La fabbriche italiane di ski aumentano e 

i costi si abbassano. Nascono le prime stazioni 

sciistiche, e i primi campioni di questo 

“nuovo” sport invadono le copertine dei giornali. 

Anche Benito Mussolini viene immortalato 

mentre “cammina” con gli sci. Già dalla 

metà degli anni Trenta vengono venduti i primi 

sci stratificati ( costruiti con vari legni). La maggior 

parte degli attrezzi vengono comunque 

ancora forgiati con listoni di frassino. Dopo la 

seconda guerra mondiale vengono importati 

dagli Stati Uniti i primi sci metallici, fatti di due 

strati di alluminio legati intorno ad un nucleo

legno compensato molto sottile. Il primo fu 

l’Head. Negli anni Sessanta, oltre al legno, vengono 

usate anche le fibre plastiche. Il primo ad 

applicare fibre di vetro fu Jacopo Linussio, della 

Lamborghini sci di Tolmezzo. Da qui in avanti 

i materiali usati per la costruzione degli sci si 

chiamano fiberglass e poliuretano. Accompagnano 

quest’evoluzione, scarponi, bastoncini, 

giacca a vento, tute e pantaloni. Le giacche da 

quelle in loden e tweed dei pionieri, diventano 

sintetiche. Siamo arrivati ai giorni nostri dove, 

oltre ai materiali, sono cambiate anche le 

forme e le misure degli sci, costruiti con il titanio, 

il carbonio il Rohacell ecc. Unica “consolazione” 

per i nostalgici è l’anima dello sci ( o 

anche di più). In alcuni modelli rimane e rimarrà

History of skiing 

FROM CANOES TO THE FIRST SKIS 

How we got about on the snow 80.000 

years ago. 

SLIDING ON THE SNOW - Eighty thousand 

years ago a long time before skiing became a 

sport, men from the frozen Siberian Steppes 

used “special” pieces of equipment beneath 

their feet. It seems incredible, but the first 

“skis” were pieces of wood resembling a 

canoe which were used for navigating across 

lakes and marshes during the less severe periods. 

Subsequently, as depicted in the first images 

of a man on skis painted five thousand years 

ago, on the Norwegian island of Rodoy, such 

pieces of canoe eventually became skis. 

Between the end of the 1700s and the early 

1800s, thanks to the availability of the train, 

skis were put to use for competitions and 

sport. In Italy this sport was introduced by 

Adolfo and Paolo Kind, father and son, both 

engineers who owned a factory making candle 

wicks in Turin. That was in 1896. 

The Kinds organised the transportation from 

Switzerland of two pairs of skis and they 

tested them in the Valentino park. Then others 

became involved and took to the hills and 

the alpine valleys surrounding the capital of 

the of the Kingdom of Italy. The evolution of 

the ski can be seen in an exhibition “Wood, 

Metal and Plastic” on display in Sestriere between 

22nd and 27th March 2010 at the 

Tourist Office and organised by Amedeo 

Macagno and Carlo Schenone. “Amongst the 

skis in my collection” – explained Macagno, “ 

there are those used in 1932 by Piero Ghilione, 

a notable pioneer of Italian skiing, for an excursion 

to the Oetzthal mountains in the Austrian 

Arlberg. In pure Finnish Birch, both the 

edges and the bindings are of pure aluminium. 

The fixtures are very light, not more than 

3.5Kg – the “tops” for the alpine skier of the 

1930s. But in the first years of the 1900s our 

arduous skiers didn’t have this type of ski on 

their feet. They were using far less light and 

sophisticated marks. The prices were, 

nonetheless, prohibitive. To think that in the 

period just before the first world war, a pair of 

skis made from ash (the cheapest of wood) 

cost about 20 lire. Those of hickory (walnut), 

(the most valuable of woods) cost about 80 

lire. That meant just a little less than a car! 

In the 1930s all that changed. The Balilla skiers 

arrived and along with fascism contributed to 

the big boom in this sport which, like the dictatorship, 

became a popular pastime. No 

longer reserved for the elite and well to do. 

The Italian ski factories grew and the prices 

dropped. The first ski resorts opened and the 

first champions in this “new” sport invaded the 

front pages of newspapers. And Benito Mussolini 

became immortalised as he “walked” on 

skis. Already by the mid 1930s the first stratified 

skis were sold (constructed of various 

lengths). The major part of the equipment, 

however was still made of ash. After the second 

world war, imported from the USA, came 

the first metal skis made of two sheets of aluminium 

attached around a nucleus of thin plywood. 

The first was Head. In the 1960s along 

with wood, plastic fibre was also used. 

The first to use fibreglass was Jacopo Linussio 

of Lamborghini Ski of Tolmezzo. From this 

point on the materials used for the construction 

of skis became fibreglass and 

polyurethane. Accompanying this evolution, 

boots, poles, wind jackets, suits and trousers. 

The jackets of loden and tweed of the pioneers, 

became synthetic. Today, apart from 

the materials, the shape and length of skis has 

also changed, some now made from titanium, 

carbon, Rohacell etc. The only “consolation” 

for the nostalgic is the very soul of the ski (or 

maybe more). In some marks wood still remains 

and always will.

MONTAGNE OLIMPICHE – Incontrare un 

animale selvatico in alta montagna è sempre 

un emozione unica. Ci si sente ancor più vicini 

a madre natura e alle sue splendide creature. 

Dagli ungulati, ai rapaci sino alle piccole marmotte, 

il momento è sempre magico. Sulle 

montagne olimpiche vivono migliaia di capi. 

Tra gli ungulati a farla da padrone sono cervi, 

camosci e caprioli. Incontrarli non è difficile 

basta attendere le prime luci dell’alba oppure 

al tramonto. Per osservarli da vicino serve munirsi 

di un cannocchiale perché il loro istinto 

naturale non concede all’uomo di avvicinarsi 

più di tanto, in genere un centinaio di metri. 

Poche le eccezioni: ad esempio le grandi nevicate 

come accaduto durante l’inverno 

2008/2009. In condizioni estreme, bloccati 

dalla morsa di neve, anche l’istinto viene 

meno. 

Tuttavia bisogna resistere alla tentazione di 

avvicinarsi troppo per non rischiare di generare 

in loro una situazione di shock ed anche 

perché, innervositi e stremati, potrebbero di- 

ventare pericolosi per l’uomo. Decisamente 

più difficile è avvistare gli stambecchi che vivono 

sì in branchi ma che prediligono come 

habitat le creste rocciose in alta quota dove 

restano per tutto l’anno. Sulle montagne 

olimpiche gli stambecchi (capra ibex) erano 

praticamente estinti. Solamente dai primi 

anni settanta si è tornati ad avvistare qualche 

capo grazie anche ad un programma di ripopolamento 

di questa specie avviato dalla Provincia 

di Torino. Ripopolamenti che, a più 

riprese ed in diversi luoghi, hanno portato ad 

ottimi risultati al punto che la stima di stambecchi 

censiti sul territorio delle montagne 

olimpiche, dalla Val Susa alla Val Chisone, supera 

le 250 unità. Per quanto riguarda invece 

i rapaci, il re delle montagne olimpiche è il gipeto 

che si può ammirare volteggiare seguendo 

le varie correnti d’aria e che può 

arrivare ad avere un’apertura alare sino a 4 

metri. Anche questo animale era praticamente 

scomparso dalla zona e recentemente 

è stato reintrodotto grazie a vari enti ed associazioni 

del territorio.

OLYMPIC MOUNTAINS - To come across a 

wild animal in the high mountains always 

evokes a unique emotion. It makes one feel 

closer to mother nature and her splendid 

creatures. From hooved mammals to birds of 

prey, to the little marmotte, the moment is always 

magic. Thousands of animals live in the 

Olympic mountains. Of the hooved variety, 

the lords are the deer, the chamois and the 

roe deer. To come across one is not difficult. 

You just have to wait till the first light of dawn 

or sunset. To observe them closely it is wise to 

use a telescope as their natural instinct does 

not allow us to approach too closely-usually 

about 100metres. But there are a few exceptions: 

for example when the great snows fell 

in the winter of 2008/2009. In extreme conditions, 

trapped in the grip of snow, their instinct 

diminishes. Nevetheless, we need to 

resist the temptation of approaching too 

closely in order to avoid putting them into a 

state of shock and because, nervous and exhausted, 

they could become dangerous to 

humans. 

Decidedly more difficult to spot is the Ibex 

who live in herds but who favour as their 

habitat, the rocky crests at high altitude 

where they can live all year round. On the 

Olympic mountain the goat and Ibex were 

practically extinct. Only in the early 1970s 

were a few of them sighted again thanks to 

a programme of re-population of this species, 

launched in the Province of Turin. Re-population 

which, on a number of occasions and in 

different areas, have brought excellent results 

to the point where, according to a census, 

over 250 heads are estimated to be living on 

the Olympic mountain. 

Regarding the birds of prey, however, the 

king of the mountain is the Gipeto, which 

can be admired circling and swirling above 

following the various air currents and who 

can have a wingspan of up to 4 metres. 

This animal too had almost disappeared from 

the area and was recently reintroduced 

thanks to various enterprises and associations 

of the region.

Sestriere ha ospitato per il secondo anno consecutivo 

due concorsi ippici a livello nazionale. 

Ora è pronta per ospitarne uno internazionale nel 2010. 

SESTRIERE - Sulla magnifica terrazza che si 

affaccia sui Monti della Luna, Sestriere ha 

ospitato tra luglio ed agosto 2009, due splendidi 

Concorsi Ippici Nazionali A Categoria 4 

stelle. Dopo il successo della prima edizione 

del 2008, cavalieri ed amazzoni provenienti 

da tutta Italia si sono ritrovati ai 2000 metri 

del Colle per dare vita ad avvincenti sfide in 

sella a purosangue di gran classe. Oltre 300 i 

cavalli iscritti alle competizioni a livello nazionale 

con Alessandro Riario Sforza in sella a 

Oxer Del Cetona, vincitore del Grand Prix Comune 

di Sestriere tenutosi dal 24 al 26 luglio 

con in palio un montepremi complessivo 

lordo di 28.000 euro. 

“È la prima volta che gareggio ad una simile 

quota – ha dichiarato il cavaliere lombardo - 

ed è stata veramente una bella esperienza. 

Durante i primi giorni i cavalli hanno fatto un 

po’ di fatica ad adattarsi all’altitudine ma poi 

hanno reso al massimo. Il campo di gara, 

come quello di prova, era preparato veramente 

bene e gareggiare in questo scenario 

alpino è stato veramente fantastico”. 

Riario Sforza ha avuto la meglio al barrage 

(con zero penalità e un tempo di 39’’64) nei 

confronti di Luigi Serra su Sun Set (pure lui 

zero penalità ma con un tempo di 42’’12). 

Terzo posto finale per Augusto Daniele Da 

Rios in sella a Ultimate (con 4 penalità e 

39’’21) davanti a Emanuele Arioldi su Almé 

Adelheid Z (4 penalità e 41’’44). 

Oltre al montepremi Riario Sforza ha ricevuto 

direttamente dalle mani del Sindaco di Sestriere, 

Valter Marin, uno speciale trofeo realizzato 

durante l’edizione 2008 dello Scalpello 

d’Oro. 

Il weekend successivo, dal 31 luglio al 2 agosto, 

si è svolto il secondo Concorso Ippico Nazionale 

A Categoria 4 stelle denominato Gran 

Premio Villaggio Olimpico. Ad imporsi questa 

volta è stato Roberto Arioldi in sella a Loro 

Piana Agadir, assente per impegni alla prima 

tornata di gare. Brillantemente superata la 

fase eliminatoria, Arioldi si è imposto al barrage 

con ostacoli ad un’altezza di 145 centi-

Alessandro Riario Sforza. 

“Ci siamo dati da fare ed abbiamo vinto 7 

gare – ha dichiarato Arioldi già trionfatore a 

Sestriere nel 2008. La location ed i terreni di 

gara sono buoni, i cavalli stanno bene considerato 

che in pianura in questo periodo ci 

sono quasi 40 gradi, e questo di Sestriere è 

veramente un concorso interessante. Spero 

che per il prossimo anno si possa a mettere in 

programma una settimana con una gara nazionale 

e la successiva a livello internazionale. 

Le potenzialità ci sono tutte, basta solo migliorare 

con una pavimentazione adeguata 

l’alloggio delle scuderie”. 

Un messaggio ricevuto da parte dell’amministrazione 

comunale di Sestriere che ha patrocinato 

l’evento organizzato della ASD 

Canavese Nardi Eventi Sportivi e del Villaggio 

Olimpico di Sestriere. 

Infine da segnalare la presenza in gara di 

Paolo Bendinoni, giovane sestrierese che ha 

ben figurato in sella alla sua cavalla italiana 

“Fatti Furbetta” nelle categorie riservate ai

Equitation - MOVING UP 

Sestriere has hosted for the second 

consecutive year two horse shows at 

national level. Now it is ready to host 

an international event in 2010. 

SESTRIERE – On the magnificent slopes facing 

the Monti della Luna, Sestriere hosted, 

between July and August 2009, two splendid 

National 4 star, A category horse shows. 

After the success of 2008, riders from all 

areas of Italy met at the 2000 metre Colle

More than 300 horses were involved in the 

competition at national level with Alessandro 

Riario Sforza riding Oxer Del Cetona, winner 

of the Commune de Sestriere Grand Prix 

held between 24th and 26th July with a total 

prize of 28.000 euros. 

“ Its the first time that I have competed at this 

height” stated the Lombard rider, - “and it 

was a wonderful experience. During the first 

few days the horses were a little tired adapting 

to the altitude but they performed well. 

The course was well prepared and to compete 

in this type of alpine scenery was truly 

fantastic” Riario Sforza was the winner (with 

zero penalties and a time of 39”64) compared 

with Luigi Serra riding Sun Set (he too 

with zero penalties but with a time of 42”12). 

In third place was Augusto Daniele Da Rios 

riding Ultimate (with 4 penalties and a time of 

39”21) followed by of Emanuele Arioldi on 

Alme Adelheid Z (4 penalties and 41”44). 

Along with his prize, Riario Sforza received, 

directly from the hands of the Mayor of Sestriere, 

Valter Marin, a special trophy realized 

for the Scalpello d’Oro (Golden Chisel) event 

of 2008. 

The following weekend from 31st July to 2nd 

August, the second A category 4 star National 

event, the Olympic Village Gran Premio 

took place and this time was dominated by 

Roberto Arioldi riding Loro Piana Agadir, (he 

was unable to attend the first part of the 

event). 

Having succeeded brilliantly in the heat, Arioldi 

cleared jumps of 145 cms, with zero 

penalties and an incredible time of 37”68. 

In second place was Augusto Daniele Da Rios 

riding Ultimate ( zero penalties, 38”48) followed 

by Clint Sulmoni on Elf Dali (zero 

penalties and 38”59). 

Alessandro Riario Sforza on this occasion 

took sixth place.

The location and the courses are good, the 

wellbeing of the horses has been taken into 

consideration as in the plains in this period 

temperatures can reach almost 40 degrees 

and this competition at Sestriere is very interesting. 

I hope that next year we can put into action 

a week with national competitions followed 

by those at international level. 

All the potential is there, we just need to create 

an area suitably adapted for stables”.

praises of the presence in the race of Paolo 

Bendinoni, a young man from Sestriere who 

has figured frequently in the saddle of his Italian 

horse “Fatti furbetta” in the categories reserved

Vittorio Bonadé Bottino nasce a Torino nel 

1889. Nel 1914 si laurea presso il Politecnico 

di Torino in ingegneria civile. Per oltre 

40 anni è stato responsabile della Divisione 

Costruzioni ed Impianti della Fiat. Nel corso 

della sua brillante carriera firma grandi 

opere per il Gruppo Fiat in Italia ed all’estero 

come gli stabilimenti di Mirafiori, 

parte del Lingotto, torri e funivie di Sestriere, 

il complesso Torino Esposizioni, 

dighe e grandi opere in tutto il mondo. Nominato 

Cavaliere del Lavoro dal Presidente 

della Repubblica Saragat, si spegne a Torino 

nel 1979 all’età di novant’anni. 

Vittorio Bonadé Bottino was born in Turin 

in 1889. In 1914 he passed a degree in civil 

engineering at the Polytechnic of Turin. For 

more than forty years he was responsible 

for the Constructional Division of the installations 

for Fiat. In the course of his brilliant 

career he undertook important works 

for Fiat both in Italy and abroad such as the 

Mirafiori buildings, part of the Lingotto, towers 

and ski lifts of Sestriere, the complessi 

Torino Esposizioni (Turin Exhibition complex), 

dams and great works worldwide. 

Known as cavalier of Works for the President 

of the Republic, Saragat, he died in 

Turin in 1979 at the age of ninety years.

SESTRIERE - L’immagine di Sestriere è indissolubilmente 

legata alle sue torri che 

l’anno resa unica in tutto il mondo. Forse 

però non tutti sanno che la storia di Sestriere 

nasce proprio dalle torri stesse. 

Siamo nel 1930 quando, complice una crisi 

nel settore automobilistico, il Senatore Agnelli 

decide di investire sullo sport in montagna. In 

particolare vuole realizzare al Colle installazioni 

turistiche incaricando l’Ing. Vittorio Bonadé 

Bottino di studiare e realizzare impianti 

funiviari ed alberghi per turisti. Ai 2.035 metri 

del Colle ci sono soltanto immense distese di 

neve dove emergono, soltanto per pochi mesi 

in estate, prati verdi dove far pascolare gli animali. 

Le uniche costruzioni presenti sono un 

piccolo albergo Sestrières, aperto per il solo 

periodo estivo, la cappella Regina Pacis e 

l’obelisco per il centenario dell’apertura della 

strada napoleonica. 

Il territorio dove oggi sorge Sestriere fa capo 

ad un unico comune con capoluogo e denominazione 

Cesana Torinese. 

Nel 1931 iniziano i lavori per la realizzazione 

della funivia Alpette-Sises, impianto in funzione 

dal 18 gennaio 1932. Lo sci entrò subito 

nel cuore di centinai di pionieri. L’eco fu 

tale che il Senatore, il quale propendeva per 

una soluzione “quantitativa” ad uso del ceto 

medio e impiegatizio a differenza del figlio 

Edoardo che caldeggiava una ricettività elitaria, 

decise di far costruire un albergo popolare 

capace di ospitare 200 sciatori ad un 

costo giornaliero di pernottamento pari a 10 

lire. Bonade’ venne incaricato dei lavori che 

iniziarono a fine marzo, sgombrando la neve 

dalla zona. Il Senatore fece una scommessa 

con Bonadè, mettendo in palio 500 lire in 

caso d’apertura agli ospiti per il 7 dicembre 

del 1932. Ebbene dopo soli 8 mesi l’albergo 

“Torre di Sestrières” fu terminato ed accolse 

i primi ospiti per il ponte dell’Immacolata. L’Ingegnere 

incassò i soldi della scommessa. 

Un anno dopo, nel 1933, con medesime 

tempistiche, venne costruito l’Albergo “Duchi 

d’Aosta”. Per entrambe le strutture Bonadè si 

affidò ad una forma avveniristica, cilindrica, 

particolarmente adatta ad ospitare stanze 

stile cabine da battello marino con una rampa 

elicoidale di raccordo. Sarà ma la sua intuizione 

rese da subito speciale ed unica Se- 

striere (sua pure la chiesa di Sant’Edoardo). 

Lo sviluppo turistico fu tale che nel 1934, con 

Regio Decreto, venne costituito il Comune di 

Sestrières, oggi Sestriere. 

Letto ciò, provate a fare con la mente un salto 

indietro nel tempo, riflettendo su materiali e 

tecnologie a disposizione del settore dell’edilizia 

negli anni 30. Tutto questo sembrerà 

ancor più incredibile e vi aiuterà a comprendere 

la grandezza delle opere a 2.000 metri 

d’altitudine create dalla matita (non c’era ancora 

il computer) dell’Ing. Vittorio Bonadé 

Bottino.

WHEN THE COLLE BECAME SESTRIERE 

The towers, designed in the 1930s by 

the engineer Bonade Bottino, were a 

demnstration of Italian genius. 

SESTRIERE- The image of Sestriere is irrevocably 

associated with its towers which have 

made it unique worldwide. Perhaps though, 

not everyone know that the story of Sestriere 

originated from these very towers. It was in 

1930 when embroiled in a crisis in the automobile 

industry, Senatore Agnelli decided to 

invest in sport in the mountains. In particular, 

he wanted to create at the Colle, touristic 

buildings, deploying the engineer Vittorio 

Bonadé Bottino to study and realize ski lifts 

and hotels for tourists. 

At 2035 metres there were only immense expanses 

of snow on the Colle and where 

green meadows, pastures for feeding animals, 

emerged for only a few summer 

months. The only constructions present were 

a little inn ‘Sestrieres’, open only for the summer 

period, the Regina Pacis Chapel and the 

obelisk which was erected to commemorate 

the 100th year of the opening of the 

Napoleonic route. 

The territory where Sestriere rises today is a 

the head of a unique commune, with a chief 

town and comes under the title Cesana Torinese. 

In 1931 the works to realize the 

Alpette-Sises cable car commenced which 

has been in operation since 18th January 

1932. Skiing quickly entered into the hearts 

of hundreds of pioneers. 

The echo was such that the Senatore who 

was in favour of a quantative solution, using 

middle classes and clerical workers, as opposed 

to his son, Edouardo who supported 

an elitist receptiveness, decided to construct 

a popular hotel capable of accommodating 

200 skiers at a daily rate of 10 lire. Bonadé 

was entrusted with the work of clearing away 

the snow from the zone and work began at 

the end of March. 

The Senatore waged a bet with Bonadé, offering 

500 lire if the opening to the public 

should take place by 7th December 1932. 

And so it was that eight months later, the 

Sestriere Tower was terminated and the first 

clients welcomed for the festa of the ‘Immacolata’. 

The engineer pocketed the money. 

One year later in 1933,with the same amount 

of time, the hotel Duchi d’Aosta was built. 

For both of the buildings, Bonadé created a 

futuristic, cylindrical type of shape specially 

adapted to accommodate the form of a ships 

cabin, and a connecting helicoidal ramp. But

for his intuition, a special and unique Sestriere 

rapidly appeared.(He built the church of Sant 

Edouardo). The touristic development was 

such that in 1934 by Regal Decree the Commune 

of Sestriere was founded, today, Sestriere. 

Having read this try to jump back in 

your mind and reflect on the materials and 

technology of the building industry which 

were available in the 1930s. All this will seem 

even more incredible and will help us to understand 

the enormity of the work at 2000 

metres of altitude, all created by the pencil of 

Vittorio Bonadé Bottino.( Computers did not 

yet exist).

Oasi del trial 

Tra Pragelato e Sestriere è nato un percorso 

permanente autorizzato per vivere emozioni 

a due ruote tra i 1.500 ed i 2.500 metri d’altitudine! 

ché, un ambizioso progetto, sia diventato 

oggi realtà. Il percorso è aperto a moto da 

trial e moto alpinismo in regola con le norme 

del Codice della Strada. Il raccordo tra Pragelato 

e Sestriere passa in cresta al Moucrons 

(2.507 metri) a cavallo delle più vette alpine. 

Il tragitto non presenta difficoltà significative. 

È alla portata di tutti ed in alcuni punti presenta 

piccole varianti che possono aiutare 

quando il fiato si fa corto. 

Per i più esigenti ci sono due Trial Park dove 

per accedervi è però necessaria una licenza 

FMI. Si raccomanda una condotta nel rispetto 

delle indicazioni senza uscire dal percorso autorizzato 

se non nelle zone “non-stop” di allenamento 

consentite e segnalate. 

Attualmente, ad eccezione di eventi, l’uso dei 

percorsi è gratuito. È gradita l’iscrizione ad un 

moto club FMI, condizione essenziale invece 

per accedere ai Trial Park di Pragelato e Sestriere.

PRAGELATO - Con la prima edizione di 

“Ruote In Quota”, la Mulatrial Pragelato-Sestriere 

disputatasi lo scorso 6 settembre, è 

stato inaugurato ufficialmente un autentico 

paradiso per il trial ed il moto alpinismo. Oltre 

65 chilometri di percorsi tra creste e vallate 

delle montagne olimpiche di Torino 2006, per 

un dislivello che varia dai 1.500 ai 2.500 metri 

d’altitudine e, ciliegina sulla torta, due trial 

park. Merito del lavoro in sinergia del Moto 

Club Gentlemen’s di Pinerolo, Sezione Pragelato, 

e del Moto Club Sestriere, assieme alla 

disponibilità delle amministrazioni comunali 

di Pragelato e Sestriere, avvallate dagli organi 

competenti. Tutti insieme hanno creduto nel 

trial e nel moto alpinismo come una valida risorsa

Between Pragelato and Sestriere a 

permanent course has been opened 

made for emotion on two wheels and 

at altitudes of between 1500 and 2500 

metres. 

PRAGELATO - With the first edition of ‘Ruote 

di Quote’ (Wheels at Altitude), the Mulatrial 

Pragelato-Sestriere which took place 6th 

September, last, was opened officially as an 

authentic paradise for trial bikes and alpine 

motorbikes. There are more than 65 kms of 

route between the crests and valleys of the 

Turin winter olympic mountains of 2006 with 

heights varying between 1500 and 2500 

metres, and to top it all, two trial parks. The 

credit for the work in synergy goes to the 

Gentlemens’ Motor Club of Pinerolo, Pragelato 

Section, and the Moto Club of Sestriere, 

and to the help given by the communal administration 

of Pragelato and Sestriere who 

made themselves available to competent organisations. 

Together they perceived the trials and alpine 

motorbiking as a valid resource for tourism 

and taking advantage of the situation, 

turned an ambitious project into reality. The 

course is open to trial bikes and alpine motorbikes 

alike, in keeping with the normal 

Highway Code. The connection between 

Pragelato and Sestriere passes through the 

Moucrons crest, at 2507 metres above the 

most stunning alpine summits. The run presents 

no significant difficulty. It is within the 

reach and capability of all and there are some 

varied parts which help when one is running 

short of breath. For the more demanding, 

there are two Trial Parks, to gain access into 

which, however, it is necessary to have an 

FMI licence. One is expected to ride with respect 

adhering to the rules and not diverting 

from the official circuit if not in the authorized 

and indicated ‘non stop’ training zones. 

At present, with the exception of during 

events, use of the course is free. It is necessary 

to inscribe at an FMI Motorclub in order 

to use the Pragelato-Sestriere Trial Park.

19 luglio, in una splendida giornata di sole, 

Di Fulvio ha coperto i 10,4 km con il tempo 

4’49”984, miglior prestazione assoluta di 

giornata, ad una media di 129,1 km/h, toccando 

una punta di velocità massima di 203 

km/ora! Sua la vittoria assoluta ed anche 

quella nel 3° Raggruppamento, dove ha regolato 

Uberto Bonucci, (vincitore nel 2007) e 

Franco Cremonesi, entrambi su Osella. 

Di Fulvio ha anche battuto il tempo record di 

Nesti mentre resta difficile fare un paragone 

con quello assoluto firmato nel 1992 da Andres 

Vilarino (4’32”68) in quanto le chicane 

di rallentamento, posizionate per motivi di sicurezza 

a Champlas du Col, non permettono 

velocità medie più elevate. 

La festa dei giovani ed in particolare in casa Di 

Fulvio è continuata anche grazie al debutto 

in gara di Simone, fratello appena diciottenne 

di Stefano. Un debutto col botto visto che è 

entrato nei primi 20 e si è imposto nella classe 

Silhouette 1600 su Fiat X 1/9. 

Nel 2° Raggruppamento si è imposto il piemontese 

Massimo Perotto, autore del quarto 

tempo assoluto (5’27”726) al volante della 

Porsche 911 RSR. Nel 1° Raggruppamento 

successo di Maurizio Antoniazzi su De Tomaso 

Vallelunga (6’02”882). Entusiasti i due 

marciatori Ivano Brugnetti e Diego Cafagna, 

che si sono esibiti come apripista prima della 

gara al volante delle Abarth 500. 

Guardando al futuro, dopo aver recuperato 

la storica corsa nel 2007 seguita dalle edizioni 

2008 e 2009, per il prossimo anno si andrà 

verso una svolta epocale. 

“Per il 2010 – spiega Gigio Ruspa, consigliere 

del Comune di Sestriere - il comune sta preparando 

un evento decisamente più corposo. 

Sarà una Cesana-Sestriere, caratterizzata da 

un forte spessore internazionale , ma non voglio 

aggiungere altro!” La modestia ed i risultati 

sono alla base del lavoro! (n.d.r).

A WAKING UP TO THE FUTURE 

The 2009 edition has brought young 

pilots of vintage cars into the limelight. 

Have we arrived at a turning point? 

SESTRIERE – Making way for youngsters. The 

28th edition of the Cesana-Sestriere speed 

races for vintage cars for the Campionato Italiano 

della Specialità (Italian Speciality Cham- 

pionship), was won by the twenty two year 

old Abruzzese, (from Abruzzo), Stefano Di 

Fulvio with his Osella-BMW PA9 of 1984. Di 

Fulvio enters, rightfully into the golden register 

and into the history of the race as the 

youngest pilot to participate in the Cesana- 

Sestriere. After having raced in the last two 

editions in the Silhouette category with a Fiat 

X1/9, the Abruzzese could not have had a 

better debut at the controls of a ‘ covered 

wheel prototype’ with a motor of 2500cc, for 

350 Cv. On Sunday 19th July, a splendidly 

sunny day, Di Fulvio covered 10,4kms with a 

time of 4,49,984, absolutely the best performance 

of the day with an average speed 

of 129,1kms, and attaining a maximum 

speed of 203kms an hour. It was his undisputed 

victory and also that of the 3rd race 

group where he beat Umberto Bonucci, (winner 

of the 2007 edition) and Franco Cremonesi, 

both in the Osella. Di Fulvio also beat 

the record time of Nesti although it is difficult 

to compare this with the race of 1992 which 

was won by Andres Vilarino (4,32,68) as the 

chicanes, positioned for security measures at 

Champlas du Col, prevented more than the 

average speed. The celebration for these 

youngsters, and in particular for Di Fulvio is 

also enhanced thanks to his brother Simone, 

barely eighteen years old who made his 

debut in the races. A debut with a bang 

being given that he featured within the first 

twenty and entered into the Silhouette 1600 

class in his Fiat X1/9. In the 2nd race group 

was Massimo Perotto from Piedmonte who 

took 4th position(5,27,726) at the wheel of 

the Porsch 911 RSR. In the 1st race group 

success went to Maurizio Antoniazzi over 

Tomaso Vallelunga (6,02,882). The two enthusiasts 

Ivano Brugnetti and Diego Cafagna 

performed as the ‘event openers’ in front of 

the race at the controls of the Abarth 500. 

Looking towards the future, having acquired 

the historic course of 2007, followed by 

those of 2008 and 2009, next year will be a 

turning point. ”For 2010 we must expect” explains 

Luigi Ruspa, advisiary of the Comune 

of Sestriere. ”The commune is preparing a 

decidedly tougher event. It will be a Cesana- 

Sestriere characterised by strong international 

importance, but I do not wish to add more!”

Gloriose vetture storiche tornano a ruggire 

su strade e passi che portano a Sestriere.

SESTRIERE - La 14° edizione del SestriereStorico 

2009 Trofeo Lancia, manifestazione di regolarità 

per auto storiche a partecipazione 

straniera, è stata dominata dall’equipaggio 

formato da Antonino Margiotta e Christian 

Margueret su A112 Abarth 70 Hp del 1981. 

La prova valida anche per il Campionato Italiano 

Regolarità Autostoriche, Coppa C.S.A.I. 

- Regolarità Autostoriche “Challenge Européen 

Régularité 2009”, si è svolta il 20 e 21 

giugno con partenza da Piazza Vittorio a Torino. 

Oltre 100 vetture iscritte, per un totale 

di 200 partecipanti tra piloti e navigatori. Sabato 

20 giugno si è tenuta un’impegnativa 

prima tappa di 397.18 km che ha portati i 

concorrenti dalla provincia di Torino a quella 

di Cuneo sino al passaggio in territorio francese 

con il suggestivo passaggio al Col d’Izoard 

(2.360 m.s.l) teatro di grandissime sfide 

legate al Tour de France. Dall’Izoard i concorrenti 

sono scesi a Briançon, rientrando in Italia 

attraverso Claviere, Cesana sino all’ambito 

traguardo di tappa, in tardo pomeriggio, 

posto a Sestriere. Domenica 21 giugno la seconda 

tappa (112 km) con partenza da Sestriere 

alle 9.30. I concorrenti hanno sfilato per 

Pragelato, Fenestrelle, Villar Perosa sino a raggiungere 

Piazza Vittorio Veneto a Pinerolo. Da 

Pinerolo il radar conduceva a Superga e successivamente 

all’arrivo posto a Torino in Piazza 

Vittorio. Qui si sono svolte le premiazioni del 

14° Sestrierestorico organizzato dalla Promauto 

Racing con Automobile Club Torino e 

Automotoclub Storico Italiano e con il patrocinio 

di: Regione Piemonte, Città e Provincia di

Torino, Città di Briançon, Città di Pinerolo e 

Comune di Sestriere. Al secondo posto assoluto 

si è piazzato l’equipaggio formato da 

Gianmaria Aghem e Rossella Conti (BMW

SESTRIERE - The 14th Sestrierestorico 2009 

Lancia Trophy, an event that takes place regularly 

for historic cars and foreign participants, 

was dominated by a team comprising 

Antonio Margiotta and Christian Margueret 

in their All2 Abarth 70 Hp of 1981. The 

course, valid also for the Campionato Italiano 

Regolarita Autostoriche Coppa C.S.A.I. (Italian 

Regular Historic cars championship Cup 

C.S.A.I – “Challenge Europeen Regularite” 

(European Regular Challenge), 2009, took 

place on the 20th June, its starting point the 

Piazza Vittorio in Turin. More than 100 cars 

took part and a total of 200 participants including

20th June proved a hard first stretch of 

397.18 kms and brought competitors from 

the Province of Turin and Cuneo into French 

territory via the dramatic Col de l’Isoard, 2360 

m, which forms part of the route of the Tour 

de France. From the Isoard, the participants 

descended into Briancon, re- entering Italy 

and crossing Claviere and Cesana, through 

the atmospheric finishing stretch leading into 

Sestriere in the late afternoon. On Sunday 

21st, the second stretch covered 112 kms 

with a departure from Sestriere at 09.30. The 

participants headed for Pragelato, Fenestrelle, 

Villar Perosa eventually reaching the 

Piazza Vittorio Veneto at Pinerolo. At Pinerolo 

they were directed towards Superga and 

then to the arrival post at Piazza Vittorio in 

Turin. There the medal of the 14th Sestrierestorico 

was presented, organised by Promauto 

Racing, along with the Automobile 

Club of Turin and the Automobile Club 

Storico Italiana and with the patronage of : 

Regione Piemonte,( Region of Piemonte), 

Citta (City) and Province of Turin, City of Briancon, 

City of Pinerolo, and Commune of 

Sestriere. In the second position was the 

team headed by Gianmaria Aghem, and 

Rosella Conti (BMW Roadster of 1938 who 

preceded Gianni Lenzi and Giuseppe

lungo strade dell’entroterra, una 

tappa nelle Langhe tra spettacolari paesaggi 

autunnali e prelibatezze eno-gastronomiche 

ed arrivo sulle montagne olimpiche del Colle 

del Sestriere. Questa l’essenza della Montecarlo-Sestriere 

2009, disputatasi dall’1 al 4 ottobre 

a cura della Promauto Racing di Giorgio 

Morre, manifestazione riservata alle vetture 

costruite entro il 1989 e valida come penultima 

prova del Super Trofeo A.S.I. Un appuntamento 

di richiamo internazionale per 

collezionisti ed appassionati di auto storiche. 

Quest’anno il successo assoluto è andato alla 

coppia Giovanni Moceri- Nanni Cifarelli (Alfa 

Romeo GT 1300 Junior del 1967). Giovedì 1 

i partecipanti si sono radunati all’Hotel Montecarlo 

Bay per le verifiche tecniche seguite 

dalla cena di gala aperta dal benvenuto di 

Franco Mistretta, Ambasciatore Italiano a 

Monaco. Lasciata Montecarlo venerdì all’alba, 

dopo un suggestivo passaggio davanti al celebre 

casinò, si è raggiunto il Col de Turinì. Il 

Colle del Tenda e la discesa verso Cuneo 

hanno riportato i concorrenti in Italia. La 

prima tappa si è conclusa, dopo 328 chilometri, 

ad Alba con cena e pernottamento. 

Sabato mattina la partenza alla volta di Sestriere 

per la seconda tappa di 183 chilometri. 

La Val Chisone, le valli e le montagne 

olimpiche hanno fatto da cornice agli ultimi 

chilometri della Montecarlo-Sestriere con le 

vetture che sono arrivate nel tardo pomeriggio 

al Colle del Sestriere. Domenica mattina 

una splendida giornata di sole ha fatto da 

cornice alle premiazioni con i concorrenti soddisfatti 

ed al tempo stesso provati dalle migliaia 

di curve affrontate lungo il percorso!

FASCINATING AND PRESTIGIOUS 

The second edition of the international 

regulated competion for vintage cars, 

with its departure from the Principality 

of Monaco and its arrival at the Colle of 

Sestriere. 

MONTECARLO- Departing from the elegant 

and refined cornice of the Principality of 

Monaco, via the hinterland and through 

spectacular autumnal countryside, a stretch 

through the delicious Langhe vineyards and 

the arrival at the olympic mountain at the 

Colle. 

This is the essence of the Montecarlo Setriere 

2009 which took place between 1-4 October 

courtesy of Giorgio Morre’s Promauto Racing, 

an event reserved for cars built before 

1989 and considered the penultimate test by 

the Super Trofeo ASI. 

A memorable international appointment for 

passionate collectors of vintage cars. 

This year the undisputed award went to the 

Giovani Moceri-Nani Cifarelli team (Alfa 

Romeo GT 1300 Junior of 1967). 

On Thursday 1st the competitors gathered at 

the Hotel Montecarlo Bay for technical tests 

and this was followed by a gala dinner hosted 

by Franco Mistretta, Italian Ambassador in 

Monaco. 

Leaving Montecarlo on Friday at dawn, after 

a dramatic passage in front of the famous 

casino, they assembled at the Col de Turini.

The Colle de Tenda and the descent towards 

Cuneo brought the competitors into Italy. 

The first stretch terminated after 328 kms, at 

Alba with overnight stop and dinner. On Saturday 

morning departure took place towards 

Sestriere and the second stretch of 183 kms. 

The Val Chisone, the valleys and the Olympic 

mountains formed the setting for the last 

kilometres of the Montecarlo Sestriere with 

cars arriving late in the afternoon at the Colle 

of Sestriere. 

Sunday morning, a lovely sunny day formed 

the setting for the prize giving with competitors, 

delighted, but at the same time tired by 

the thousands of bends tackled along the 

course.

SESTRIERE - Grandi campioni del golf e dello 

sci insieme per il Benish Trophy 2009, gara 

formula 4 palle la migliore, categoria unica, 

tenutasi lunedì 17 agosto a Sestriere. Una 

giornata veramente speciale che ha fatto registrare 

il record stagionale di iscritti da parte 

dello Sporting Club Sestrieres, circolo golf. Infatti 

gli organizzatori hanno chiuso in anticipo 

le iscrizioni alla gara in quanto è stata raggiunta 

la quota massima di concorrenti, ben 

180! L’appuntamento è stato particolarmente 

sentito dai torinesi e dai genovesi proprietari 

di seconde case al Colle. Non hanno 

voluto mancare all’appuntamento con il Benish 

Trophy, organizzato in ricordo di Benedetta 

Mazzonis di Pralafera: una persona che 

ha amato Sestriere per una vita intera e che 

ora che non c’è più è riuscita a riportare centinaia 

di persone che da anni non frequentavano 

più il Colle. Oltre ai tanti torinesi e 

genovesi, alla gara hanno preso parte nomi 

illustri dello sport a partire dal Campione del 

Mondo 2009 Edoardo Molinari, tra i big in 

Italia ed all’estero, cresciuto agonisticamente 

tra i green di Torino e del Colle. Anche Paolo 

De Chiesa, campione di sci della Valanga Azzurra 

e Presidente del Circolo ha partecipato 

all’evento. La gara è stata organizzata sia per 

ricordare Benish che per raccogliere fondi per 

la Fondazione Umberto Veronesi. Dato lo 

strepitoso successo, l’evento sarà organizzato 

anche l’anno prossimo, sempre il 17 agosto. 


Golf - A VERY SPECIAL DAY 

Here is how a game of golf held in 

memory of an extraordinary person 

who loved Sestriere, can reignite the 

passion for the Colle. With record 

numbers of inscriptions and spectators 

the Benish Trophy 2009 in memory of 

Benedetta Mazzonis of Pralafera. 

SESTRIERE - Great champions of both golf 

and ski attended this Benish Trophy 2009 

tournament four balls, best shot , single 

handicap which took place on Monday 17th 

August in Sestriere. A truly spectacular day on 

which were registered a seasonal record 

number of participants by the Sporting Club 

Sestriere, golf circle. In fact the organisers 

had to close the enrolment list early when 

they reached the maximum number of participants 

– being 180! The event was attended 

particularly by inhabitants of Turin 

and Genoa who have secondary residences 

on the Colle and who did not wish to miss 

this Benish Trophy event organised in memory 

of Benedetta Mazzonis of Pralafera. A person 

who loved Sestriere all her life, now that

she is no longer with us, has succeeded in 

bringing back hundreds of people who had 

stopped frequenting the Colle. Along with 

many Torinese and Genovesi, other famous 

names of the sporting world took part in the 

tournament starting with the 2009 World 

Champion Edoardo Molinari, a big international 

name, who developed slowly and 

painfully from the Greens of Turin to those of 

the Colle. Even Paolo de Chiesa, Ski champion 

of the Valanga Azzurra and President of 

that club, participated in the event. The tournament 

took place both to remember Benish 

as well as to acquire funds for the Umberto 

Veronesi Foundation. Given its enormous 

success, the event will be repeated next year 

once again on 17th August.

I PERSONAGGI DI SESTRIERE 

Leo Zertanna è nato 

a Reckingen, in 

Svizzera, dove ha 

vissuto sino a 10 

anni. Dal 1951 ha 

iniziato ad 

insegnare a 

Sestriere. 

Leo Zertanna was

Switzerland where 

he lived till he was 

ten years old. He 

began instructing in 

Sestriere in 1951.

Con i suoi 95 anni è il più longevo tra i maestri di sci. 

Scia ancora con gli amici e non ha perso 

la passione per uno sport che ha insegnato 

per oltre mezzo secolo.

SESTRIERE - Leo Zertanna è sicuramente uno 

dei personaggi mitici del Colle. Più volte abbiamo 

sentito parlare del “Leo” che, alla faccia 

delle sue 95 primavere compiute lo scorso 

4 novembre, anche quest’anno è arrivato a 

“svernare” a Sestriere. Domenica 8 novembre 

ha lasciato la casa dove vive a Formazza 

(Verbania) per raggiungere il suo appartamento 

al Colle dove si intratterrà sino a Pasqua. 

“Domenica ho deciso di trasferirmi a Sestriere 

– ci ha raccontato. Ho caricato i bagagli sulla 

mia macchina e sono partito accompagnato 

da mio nipote. In autostrada ho fatto guidare 

lui poi, siccome nevicava, da Salbeltrand a Sestriere 

ho guidato io perché sono più pratico 

sulla neve”. 

Leo vive solo da quando, otto anni fa, ha 

perso la moglie e non vede l’ora che riaprano 

le piste per ritrovare ex allievi e vecchi amici al 

bar della scuola e magari andare qualche 

volta a sciare. Già perché neppure dopo un 

brutto incidente sulle piste nel 2006, quando 

si fratturò il bacino e restò fermo a letto per 

2 mesi, ha deciso di appendere gli sci al 

chiodo. 

Nato a Reckingen (Svizzera) il 4 novembre 

1914 da padre svizzero e madre italiana ha 

vissuto oltralpe sino al 1924 quando, a 10 

anni, la sua famiglia si trasferì a Formazza per 

gestire quello che un 

tempo era un albergo e 

che adesso è la sua residenza. 

La passione per 

lo sci è nata in Svizzera. 

A 5 anni ha iniziato a 

sciare: una passione che 

ha coltivato per quasi un 

secolo. 

“Sono stato un atleta 

della nazionale italiana 

ed ho partecipato a numerose 

gare. Nel 1935 

ero nel gruppo di atleti ai 

test pre-olimpiadi a Garmisch 

Partenkirchen. 

Purtroppo però ai giochi 

del 1936 il mio posto è 

stato preso da un altro atleta “raccomandato”. 

Qui a Sestriere ho disputato a due edizioni 

della Coppa del Re: ci si buttava giù dal Sises 

sino a Sauze di Cesana tutta d’un fiato ed in 

neve fresca. Nel 1937 caddi e mi ruppi un 

gamba mentre nel 1938 arrivai in fondo. 

Sono Maestro di sci dal 1936 e, dal 1939, ho 

ottenuto il permesso di esercitare la professione 

a Cervinia. Nel 1951 mi chiamò Francesco 

Passet, all’epoca direttore della Scuola 

Nazionale Sci Sestriere, perché servivano

a Garmisch Partenkirchen. 

Purtroppo però ai giochi 

del 1936 il mio posto 

è stato preso 

da un altro atleta

sciavo per nove mesi, cinque a Sestriere e 

quatto sul ghiacciaio dello Stelvio. Ora vado a 

sciare con gli amici di Sestriere e soltanto 

quando fa bel tempo”. 

Leo ha insegnato a sciare a ben quattro generazioni. 

Tra i suoi allievi tanti personaggi famosi 

a partire dagli Agnelli. “Ho seguito i figli 

del Senatore, Margherita ed Edoardo dall’età 

di 7-8 anni, i cugini Fürstenberg e poi anche 

Susanna Agnelli con i 

figli. Ho sciato con il Generale 

Cadorna e famiglia 

e con tanti altri 

personaggi. Inoltre ho 

conosciuto campioni 

come Manuel Fangio, 

Tazio Nuvolari e Nino Farina, 

incontrati all’hotel 

Principi di Piemonte. Ricordo 

che Fangio mi 

confidò di aver paura a 

sfrecciare su due legni. 

È curioso come un campione 

temerario dell’automobilismo, 

temesse in 

qualche modo la velocità 

sugli sci!”. 

Leo Zertanna è stato anche testimone dell’evoluzione 

dello sci e di Sestriere. 

“Oggi è tutto cambiato a partire dal luogo. 

C’erano soltanto poche costruzioni e tre impianti 

che portavano al Banchetta, al Sises ed 

al Fraiteve. I maestri battevano le piste a piedi, 

salivamo al Banchetta con la funivia e scendevamo 

con gli sci sino a Borgata. 

Rientravamo a Sestriere con due pulmini, 

schiacciati come acciughe in scatola, con gli 

sci sul tetto. L’attrezzatura era quella che era. 

Se cadevi si rompeva lo sci, l’attacco o la…

gamba! Si sentiva di più il freddo: avevamo 

scarpe in cuoio e pantaloni fuseau. La neve 

passava il tessuto, si scioglieva, e venivano i 

geloni. Lo sci è diventato un fenomeno di 

massa che ha rivoluzionato tutto. 

Piste battute come autostrade e sci sempre 

più veloci rendono oggi questo sport più pericoloso 

di un tempo!” 

Dopo aver smesso di insegnare Leo ha fatto 

da apripista, assieme agli amici Pino Armand 

e Giovanni Sichieri, ai Mondiali di Sci Alpino 

del 1997 a Sestriere. A 95 anni aspetta colleghi 

ed amici per fare ancora qualche sciata. 

“Ho un ginocchio che mi fa un po’ male, il 

dottore dice che è artrosi. Ci può stare, sono 

i segni del tempo. Alla mia età mi domando 

come faccio ad essere ancora vivo! 

Per concludere un consiglio utile agli sciatori. 

“Bisogna sempre sciare con prudenza, soprattutto 

all’inizio specie se i muscoli non 

sono ben preparati. Andate sempre con giudizio 

e non buttatevi giù dalle piste stile kamikaze”.

At 95 years of age, he is the most 

elderly of the ski instructors. He still 

skis with friends and has not lost the 

passion for the sport that he has taught 

for more than half a century. 

SESTRIERE – Leo Zertanna is surely one of the 

most famous people of the Colle. Many 

times we have heard speak of ‘Leo’ who, in 

the face of his 95th spring which he celebrated 

on the 4th November, has come to 

spend the winter here in Sestriere. On Sunday 

8th November he left his house in Formazza 

( Verbania) to come to his apartment

On Sunday I decided to transfer to Sestriere” 

– he told us. “I loaded my luggage into my 

car and I left, accompanied by my Nephew. 

Whilst on the motorway, he drove, but as it 

snowed between Salbertrand and Sestriere, I 

drove as I am better at driving on the snow”! 

Leo has lived alone since losing his wife eight 

years ago and cant wait for the pistes to open 

so he can join his ex students and old friends 

at the ski school bar and even go skiing with 

them from time to time. 

Not even after a brutal 

accident on the pistes in 

2006 when he fractured 

the base of his spine and 

had to remain in bed for 

two months, did he decide 

to hang up his skis. 

Born in Reckingen 

(Switzerland) on 4th November 

1914 of a Swiss 

father and an Italian 

mother he lived on the 

other side of the alpes 

until 1924 when, at 10 

years old his family transferred 

to Formazza to 

run what was once a 

hotel but which is now his home. 

His passion for skiing originated in Switzerland. 

He started skiing when he was 5 years 

old: a passion which he has nurtured for 

nearly a century. 

“I was an athlete of the National Italian team 

and participated in numerous competitions. 

In 1935 I was part of a group of athletes to 

be tested at the pre Olympics at Garmisch 

Partenkirchen. Unfortunately, however, at the 

games of 1936 my position was taken by another 

“recommended” athlete.

Here in Sestriere I have participated in two series 

of the Coppa del Re: Here we threw ourselves 

down from Sises to Sauze di Cesana in 

one go and in fresh snow. 

In 1937 I fell and injured a leg whilst in 1938 

I finished the race. I have been a ski instructor 

since 1936 and, from 1939 I obtained 

permission to practice the profession in 

Cervinia. In 1951 the then Director of the Sestriere 

National Ski School, Francesco Passet, 

called me, as they needed instructors. Since 

then, in winter I have always 

taught here. There 

have been years when I 

have skied for nine 

months – five in Sestriere 

and four on the Stelvio 

glacier. Now I ski with 

friends in Sestriere but 

only when the weather 

is good. 

Leo has taught four generations 

of skiers. 

Amongst his students 

there have been many 

famous people starting 

with the Agnelli family. “ 

I have been behind the 

children of the Senator, 

Margherita and Edouard since they were 

seven or eight years old, the Furstenberg 

cousins, and then also Susanna Agnelli and 

her children. I have skied with General 

Cadorna and his family and many other well 

known persons. 

Above all I have known champions such as 

Manuel Fangio, Tazio Nuvolari and Nino Farina, 

who I met at the Hotel Principe di 

Piemonte. I remember that Fangio confided 

to me once that he was afraid of speed on 

two planks of wood! It is strange how a reckless 

champion of the automobile fears in 

some ways speed on skis”! 

Leo Zertanna has also witnessed the evolution 

of the ski and of Sestriere. 

Today everything has changed apart from the 

location. Once there was little construction 

and only three lifts which took one to 

Banchetta, Sises, and to Fraiteve. 

The instructors walked up on foot, then took 

the cable car to Banchetta and then we came 

down with our skis to Borgata. 

We returned to Sestriere with two minibuses, 

squashed like sardines in a tin with our skis 

on the roof. The equipment was such as it 

was at that time. 

If you fell your ski or binding broke or 

….your leg! We felt the cold much more. We 

had leather shoes and worn out trousers. The 

snow passed through the fabric, melted and 

we got chilblains. 

Skiing has become a massive phenomenon 

which has revolutionized everything. 

Pistes groomed like motorways and skis capable 

of going ever faster are now rendering 

the sport more dangerous than before. 

After he had stopped instructing, Leo 

worked as an apripista (preparing and opening 

runs prior to events) along with his friend 

Pino Armand and Giovanni Sichieri, at the 

opening of the Mondial di Sci Alpino 1997 in 

Sestriere. 

At 95 he is waiting for colleagues and friends 

to have another ski. “ I have a painful knee 

which the Doctor says is arthritis. It will remain 

as it is a sign of the times. At my age I 

wonder how I am still alive”! 

To conclude – a bit of useful advice to skiers. 

“Always ski with care, especially to start with 

especially if your muscles are not tuned. Go 

always taking care and don’t throw yourselves 

down the piste like a kamikaze” (e.r)

SUSA - Venivano da Tolosa, da Mines da Avignone, 

molti da più lontano. E tutti avevano 

ringraziato il Signore quando, attraversato il 

Moncenisio erano finalmente a Susa. Una 

città prodigiosa. 

Custode di oltre 2000 anni di storia, Susa è 

più antica di quanto si possa immaginare. Già 

nel 58 avanti Cristo, quando vi passano i legionari 

di Giulio Cesare per marciare sulle Gallie 

è già la capitale di un regno prospero e 

felice che si estende al di là delle Alpi fino alla 

Val d’Isère e Durance. Inevitabilmente il regno 

di Susa finisce per gravitare nell’orbita romana. 

Oggi, la città possiede una serie di 

opere monumentali di grandissimo pregio tra 

cui l’Arco di Augusto eretto tra il 9 e l’8 a. C. 

per celebrare il patto tra Re Cozio I, re locale, 

e l’impero Romano. Espressione della successiva 

epoca medievale è il Castello della Contessa 

Adelaide. Questa presenza femminile è 

molto importante per Susa, perché Adelaide 

sposò Oddone di Savoia (1000 a.C.) e questo 

darà l’avvio alla dinastia Sabauda, portando 

Susa ad essere l’avamposto dei Savoia in Italia. 

La rilevanza europea di Adelaide ha riscontro 

nel matrimonio della figlia con Enrico 

IV, imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero. Al 

padre di Adelaide si lega la costruzione dell’imponente 

Cattedrale di San Giusto e del 

suo spettacolare campanile. Dalle finestre del 

castello lo sguardo spazia su tutta Susa. 

Sulle alture che circondano Susa, si possono 

individuare i suggestivi ruderi dell’imponente 

fortezza della Brunetta che richiama il passaggio 

di Napoleone Bonaparte. Sarà proprio 

Napoleone a chiedere lo smantellamento del 

forte della Brunetta considerato all’epoca la 

costruzione militare più interessante d’Europa. 

Ai piedi dell’altura denominata Brunetta sono 

presenti importanti interventi d’epoca risorgimentale, 

quali la Stazione ferroviaria, inaugurata 

nel 1854. Proprio la stazione accresce il 

ruolo strategico della città motivatamente 

considerata una tappa imperdibile per tutti coloro 

che amano la storia e l’arte d’Italia e d’Europa.

monuments, amongst which, the Arch

local King Cozie and the Roman Emperor. Testimony 

to the successive medieval period is 

the castle of the Countess Adelaide. This female 

presence was very important for Susa 

because Adelaide married Oddone of Savoy, 

(1000BC), and this gave rise to the Sabauda

The importance of Adelaide in Europe was 

sealed due to the marriage of her daughter to 

Enrico 1V (Henry 1V) Holy Roman Emperor. 

It is to Adelaide’s father that we owe the legacy 

of the cathedral San Giusto and its spectacular 

bell tower. From the windows of the 

castle we can see over all of Susa. 

In the heights which surround Susa it is possible 

to decipher the evocative ruins of the 

imposing fortress of Brunetta which recalls 

the passage of Napoleone Bonaparte. It was 

Napoleone himself who ordered the dismantling 

of the fortress considered at the time to 

be the most important in Europe. At the foot 

of the heights known as Brunetta, are important 

remnants of the period of the Risorgimento, 

amongst them the railway station 

inaugurated in 1854. It was the station that 

increased the strategic role of the city which 

justifiably is considered a stopping place not 

to be missed for lovers of Italian and European 

history and art. 

SESTRIERE - L’edizione 2009 dello Scalpello 

d’Oro “Simposio di Scultura su legno e Pittura”, 

dal 5 all’8 agosto, sarà ricordata come 

quella della svolta. Infatti per la prima volta, 

oltre agli scultori, hanno fatto il loro debutto 

i pittori. La scelta si è rivelata azzeccata ripagando 

le aspettative del maestro Carlo Piffer, 

a capo della commissione del concorso che 

ha avuto la preziosa collaborazione del Comune 

di Sestriere, dei commercianti ed albergatori 

e di diversi sponsor tecnici e locali. 

“Trofei sportivi per manifestazioni nazionali 

ed internazionali a Sestriere” è stato il tema 

sul quale gli artisti sono stati chiamati a trasmettere 

nelle proprie opere e che ha avuto 

come filo conduttore le diverse discipline 

sportive praticate al Colle ed i luoghi e simboli 

che identificano Sestriere. 

Quattro giorni di lavoro in piazza Fraiteve con 

gli artisti che hanno dato sfoggio di tecnica 

e creatività al cospetto del pubblico che ancora 

una volta ha dimostrato di apprezzare 

questo contatto diretto con l’arte. Hanno partecipato 

a quest’edizione i seguenti scultori: 

Fabio Nicola (Serravalle Sesia); Dino Damiani 

(Grignasco); Adriano Gasparini (Piovene Rocchette); 

Gianpaolo Corna (Grone); Gjobè 

Sperotto (Sarcedo); Elia Marsetta (Merate); 

Antonio Piffer (Mosana di Giovo). Nutrita 

anche la pattuglia dei pittori, tutti torinesi, 

composta da: Dino Carpinello; Lorenzo Bricarello; 

Maria Teresa Morsietto; Elio Lusso; 

Valeria Landrino. 

Le opere sono esposte all’ufficio di accoglienza 

turistica, in attesa di essere cedute

Crafts - BRUSH AND CHISEL 

Two tools for transmitting art and 

emotion onto wood and canvas for a 

symposium of sculpture and pictures at 

altitude of 6.676 feet. 

SESTRIERE – The 2009 edition of the Golden 

Chisel “A symposium of wood sculpture and 

paintings” from 5th to 8th of August 2009 , 

will be regarded as one of the most memorable. 

In fact for the first time, others besides 

sculptors, made their debut in pictures. 

The event has exposed ample means of satisfying 

the expectations of the maestro Carlo 

Piffer, to the head of the commission of contests 

who has benefited from the valuable 

collaboration of the Commune of Sestriere, 

traders, hoteliers and various technical and 

local sponsors. “Sportive trophys for national 

and international exhibitions in Sestriere” is 

the theme to which the artists were called 

upon to portray their own work and represent 

the various sportive disciplines practiced 

at the Colle and the areas and the symbols 

which identify Sestriere. 

Four days of work in the Fraiteve Square with 

the artists has unravelled technique and creativity 

in the presence of the public who have 

once again demonstrated their appreciation 

of this direct contact with art. 

Amongst those who participated in this edition 

are the sculptors Fabio Nicola (Serravalle 

Sesia); Dino Damiani (Grignasco); Adriano 

Gasparini (Piovene Rocchette); Gianpaolo Corina 

(Grone); Gjobè Sperotto (Sarcedo); Elia 

Marsetta (Merate); Antonio Piffer (Mosana di 

Giovo). Aiding also in the picture patrol, all 

from Turin were Dino Carpinello; Lorenzo 

Bricarello; Maria Teresa Morsietto; Elio Lusso; 

Valeria Landrino. The works are displayed at 

the Tourist Office awaiting to be offered as

RISTRUTTURARE 

Chalet Mollino 

Dopo quasi 60 anni, con pazienti lavori di restauro, un 

tesoro sulle montagne olimpiche non giace più in stato 

di abbandono ma è stato recuperato e completato. 

Giorgio Rajneri in tre riprese, nel 1999, nel 

2001 e nel 2003, e nel 2008 viene allestita 

un’ esposizione permanente al suo interno, 

che ne documenta la storia e che illustra le 

molteplici attività del suo progettista (pilota 

di auto da corsa e di aerei, sciatore, fotografo, 

scenografo, artista, inventore, scrittore e 

molto altro ancora). 

La “Capanna” recuperata non ha però finora 

trovato una destinazione che la faccia rivivere 

e rischia di riavviarsi verso un nuovo destino di 

abbandono e di inevitabile degrado. 

Dopo alcuni anni di stand by, la nuova Amministrazione 

Comunale, guidata dal Sindaco 

Mauro Meneguzzi, intende lanciare un concorso 

per dare all’esterno la gestione della 

“Capanna”, con una destinazione che ne 

consenta l’apertura tutto l’anno. 

La nuova gestione dovrà garantire l’ospitalità 

con strutture di accoglienza (bar-ristorante) 

non invasive e spazi aperti ad attività culturali, 

in sintonia con la struttura museale allestita 

al suo interno.

SAUZE D’OULX - Nel 1946-47, un pioniere 

dell’automobilismo, Piero Dusio, patron della 

scuderia per cui correva Tazio Nuvolari, commissiona 

all’amico architetto Carlo Mollino la 

Stazione della slittovia Sauze d’Oulx-Clotès- 

Lago Nero a quota 2400. 

In meno di un anno, Mollino progetta e realizza 

un capolavoro di architettura montana 

moderna, in cui integra un rascard tradizionale 

alpino, in legno e pietra, con i materiali 

più moderni (cemento armato, acciaio zincato, 

vetrocemento, cristallo). 

Cessata la funzione di Stazione negli anni ‘60, 

la Capanna viene abbandonata alle intemperie 

e ai vandali che la saccheggiano. 

I lavori di restauro della Capanna, vengono 

condotti dagli architetti Giovanni Brino e

this jewel on the olympic mountain 

is no longer frozen in a state 

of abandonment but has been 

completely restored. 

SAUZE D’OULX - Between 1946-7, a pioneer 

of motor cars, Piero Dusio, Captain of the 

team for whom Tazio Nuvolari raced, commissioned 

his friend and architect Carlo 

Mollino, to construct the arrival station of the 

Oulx-Clotès-Lago Nero piste at an altitude of 

2400m. 

In less than a year, Mollino designed and executed 

a work of modern architecture, in 

which he integrated into the traditional 

alpine style of wood and stone, more modern 

materials (reinforced cement, galvanised 

steel, glassconcrete, crystal). 

In the 1960s the station ceased to function 

and the building was abandoned and left to 

the elements- bad weather, and vandals who 

ransacked it. 

The renovation work of the Capanna (the station 

building) was undertaken by the architects 

Giovanni Brino and Giorgio Rajneri in 

three stages-1999, 2001, and 2003. 

In 2008 it was set up to accommodate a permanent 

exhibition within its walls, documenting 

its history and illustrating the 

multiple activities of its designer (racing driver, 

air pilot, skier, actor, artist, inventor, writer, 

and much more). 

The restored ‘Capanna’ however, still doesn’t 

have a purpose to revive it and might risk 

once again becoming neglected and falling 

into a state of disrepair. 

After a few years in stand by, the new Communal 

Administration headed by the Mayor 

Mauro Meneguzzi, now intends to throw a 

competition to find new directors for the ‘Capanna’ 

giving it a function that will enable it 

to remain open all year round. 

The new directors must guarantee non intrusive, 

pleasant and welcoming hospitality, (barrestaurant) 

along with appropriate space for 

cultural activities, to harmonise with the museum 

structure within its walls.

SESTRIERE - Proprio mentre questo numero 

di Sestriere Life si appresta ad andare in 

stampa, siamo alle porte di Natale 2009, si 

stanno svolgendo gli ultimi incontri, organizzati 

dall’infaticabile vice sindaco di Sestriere 

Gianni Poncet, per definire la nascita del 

“Consorzio Sestriere Montagne Olimpiche 

Turismo”. 

Una svolta epocale per Sestriere e per tutte le 

vallate. Soci fondatori sono i comuni di Sestriere, 

Sauze di Cesana, Cesana Torinese e 

Pragelato, la Sestrieres S.p.A., l’Associazione 

Albergatori di Sestriere, l’ Ascom, Associazione 

Mondo Artigiani e Noleggi, l’Associazione 

Imprenditori di Sestriere e l’Associazione 

Scuole di Sci e Sci Club di Sestriere. 

Insieme stanno per scrivere un’importante 

pagina di storia. In ballo c’è il futuro di un territorio 

che ha lavorato sodo, lontano dai riflettori, 

contribuendo in maniera determinante 

al successo di Olimpiadi e Paralimpiadi 

Invernali di Torino 2006. Ebbene, con il 

medesimo spirito di squadra, si cerca di guardare 

avanti per proiettare un’immagine unita 

e coordinata capace di riflettere giusto valore 

di un comprensorio turistico, quello delle 

montagne olimpiche, ricco di natura, sport, 

arte, cultura che non teme confronti in ambito 

nazionale ed internazionale.

SESTRIERE - Just as this issue of Sestriere Life 

is ready to be printed, we are approaching 

Christmas 2009, and the last meetings organised 

by the indefatigable Vice Mayor of 

Sestriere, Gianni Poncet, are unfolding, sealing 

the creation of the ‘Consorzio Sestriere 

Montagne Olympiche Turismo (Sestriere Consortium 

of Olympic Mountain Tourism). 

An epic time for Sestriere and all the villages. 

The founder members are the communes of 

Sestriere, Sauze di Cesana, Cesana Torinese 

and Pragelato, the Sestriere S.P.A., the Association 

of Hoteliers of Sestriere, Ascom, l’Associazione 

Mondo Artigiani e Noleggi, (World 

Association of Crafts and Hire), Association

of Entrepreneurs of Sestriere, and the Association 

of the Ski School and Ski Club of Sestriere. 

Together they will write an important 

page of history. In question it is the future of 

a territory that has worked hard, away from 

the limelight, contributing in a positive manner 

to the success of the Turin Winter 

Olympics and Paralympics of 2006. And so, 

with the same team spirit we are looking 

ahead to project a united and coordinated 

image capable of reflecting the just value of 

a touristic area, that of the Olympic mountain, 

rich in nature, sport, art, culture and unequalled 

in National and International domains.

Raffaele Nicolini (nella foto) che realizza la Beauty Farm all’interno 

del Villaggio Olimpico di Sestriere.

Oggi la Beauty Farm Les Anges al suo interno offre una vasta gamma 

di trattamenti di bellezza: Viso anti età al Caviale, Trattamento Orientale 

Idratante, Dermopurificante, Lift Mask , Scrub Corpo con Kessel 

e Beldi, proveniente da Marrakech. 

Inoltre massaggi speciali: Tibet Massage, Magic Honey Massage, Chocolat 

Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Massaggio con Olio puro di 

Argan, massaggio tonificante con Olio di Vinaccioli.
